Hey guys, remember the "Forced Listening" threads?  Where each person who posted would first review the song that the previous poster had offered, then offer one of their own?  I always thought those were cool threads.  I kind of want to start doing that here again.  Who's with me?

I think this works best if we keep it to Youtube clips.

Here's my first offering:
16 Bit - Shallow (remix of The Book of Right-On by Joanna Newsom)

I give it a 6, it is nice but not too memorable and kind of repetitive.

9/10, fantastic song, although now that I've heard the 20 different takes that Dragnet came with I'm a bit too used to it.

8/10, not my favorite from that album but a fantastic song nonetheless.

Crusties making pop-punk about killing cops and some cheesy sentiment about sharing tea with a couple of screamed bits in case anyone fell into a k-hole half way through... Yeah, I can get along with that. It probably sounds better heard in a squat when you're drunk on cheap booze bought off a guy with a dopey looking dog, but that's appropriate enough. I can see it getting annoying if I heard it a lot and it's probably too long but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and 7/10.

Apparently a harmless Scottish indie band. I'd write more about it but I feel like I'm kind of wasting my time because this is pretty boring. After a bit of search I found that the band thought "the record is brave and ambitious", huh? 4/10

I actually liked it. I thought it was a bit annoying at first, but repeated listens made it better. I can't say I loved it, and I had to look up the lyrics to actually understand what the singer said. The are quite alright, Ican' say it's music I would listen toon a daily basis, but it was pleasant. 7.5/10

the music itself wasn't bad, but the posh-boy vocals and awkward phrasing kill it for me.  3/10.

Genuinely awful. The singer has an awful voice, and the lyrics aren't much better. It was bad enough when it was just the acoustic guitar, but then suddenly it turned into some type of pop punk song that made the first part seem positively brilliant by comparison.

opens with a lonely guitar line + sample, i am always into that. then the big riff is pretty cool, the stuff happening on top of it keeps it from getting too old is pretty cool, especially the section with what i am guessing is a saxophone? fadeout is pretty cool too. however you made me thing shit was gonna get mad heavy and it did not so i am bummed. 7/10 i guess cause it still ruled.

now this is a song that is heavy iisac

A prime cut by Mr. John Cale. Just him and his piano and his incredible songwriting chops. Poignant lyrics that never fall on sentimentality, a relatively plain voice that can convey so much emotion with so little effort and histrionics.

I'm a big fan of the motown era, and the Four Tops are a great example of why I love it.  Everything is simple: a simple message to the song, a simple 4/4 beat without much syncopation, a simple melody.  Yet, there's still so much feeling in each song, that you can't help buying into it and tapping your toe.  8/10

Ah Lostprophetz. The Welsh cheese mongers are back and sound, well, exactly like they always do but without that one good riff Shinobi Versus Dragon Ninja had. It rolls along efficiently, whacks you with the chorus repeatedly and the lyrics are empty. I'm sure it'll do well. 3/10 because it reminded me of some proper back in the day shit. Speaking of which...

UK punk band that is totally channeling Hot Water Music. I usually prefer my punk faster and crustier, but this is a good song. Simple, straight forward and catchy. I would definitely see this band live. 7/10 because I couldn't find anything on them online.

That wasn't bad at all. It drones on for the first bit, and then slowly gains some intensity and then levels off for the rest of it. It seemed a little long and didn't change very much, but I'm cool with that form of music. Some kind of weird field recording at the end.

Very impressed, combines a lot of things I like (organ, 12 string guitars) and the organ solo rips. Having said that, I feel it doesn't quite come off overall as much as the band hoped, it doesn't gel as much as perhaps it should and maybe they have a few better songs in them. Still a really good track, 8/10.

I thought they'd split years ago but surprisingly to me they've reformed at some point. The album that was taken from came out in 2000 and they released their second last year, I had no idea until I went hunting for some mention of them online. They've got guys from Snuff and Blocko in them and the HWM comparison makes sense, they're hugely indebted to the kind of UK melodic punk HWM worship (i.e. the almighty Leatherface).

To comment on the last song posted by a person who also reviewed a song: "Chant to Mother Earth" by Blo

Neat! Almost dubby at times when the vocals are so echo-laden and the melody is so low in the mix, all bass and percussion, until a groovy psych-guitar solo comes in to cap it off and lead it out.  Decent track, but I kept feeling like I was waiting for something that never happened though, and there was very little in the way of a hook.  6/10

Here's something else: "Impersonator" by Modern Witch

Not bad but not exactly the most interesting of electronic music, 6/10. It can be said of most electronic music that it is repetitive but usually there are enough changes to make it seem more interesting and keep your attention. I got pretty bored with this one half way through but listened until the end hoping that there would be a change but sadly not. Still, not bad.

(I didn't actually review the song above me though!)

ah nevermind

I think this song would be better if they stuck with the sort of sounds and echo-ey space effects that they were using at the start.  A little way in, they bring in a grating high pitched sound that loops for pretty much the rest of the song with slight variations.  Also the vocal sampling did little other than keep me from getting bored.

You beat me to rating the the song KvP posted. I really liked the ambient house beginning but also thought the middle dragged on a little bit too long. I would have liked to see where he was going with it though but it just abruptly ends. I still was going to give it a 9/10. Now for the Dr Steel review. No offense but i didnt like it...at all. It was a weird fusion that just didnt work for me. It was like steam punk and goth industrial mixed together. I normally like both of those but this was just too much for me sorry. 5/10

It's nice, I like it. Not entirely sure about the guys voice, it seems to flit between beautiful and slightly annoying in the space of one line. I think I'd have to be in a particular mood to listen to it, perhaps going on a walk late at night round a city in winter, the snow gently falling and melting on the trees (i.e. what I do with Bon Iver at the moment). It would really suit that. 7/10

And now for something completely different

Classic funk, sampled by Public Enemy, what's not to like.  I'm not huge about funk, but if I'm going to listen to it I wouldn't know how to do much better than Mandrill.

And now... for something completely... damn it you already said that.

That guy singing the "Turn around" sounded annoying. If it wasn't for that, it would've been way better. I really liked the way they were using kitchen appliances as percussion. Really original. Would listen again. 8/10

It's alright, got a laugh out of me which is what it was supposed to do I guess. As a piece of music, however, it's pretty poor. Nothing against Lil' Jon (who's great) but I wouldn't listen to it again, it was a fairly standard mashup that's fine once and annoying (in exponential terms) after that. 5/10

This is about as chilled out as dubstep gets, and I kinda like that.  I wish I had a better bass response in the headphones I used to listen to it ... but the song still sounded pretty good.  Very nice relaxation music.  An excellent thing to play while smoking weed, especially if intending to have sex with one's smoking partner immediately after getting high with them.  7/10.

If there is anything there to distinguish that dub song from every other dub song ever made, the distinction was too subtle for me to discern.  But then I'm not much of a dub fan.  Completely inoffensive.  3/10

8.5/10, some of her best material - the heavily layered instrumentation works very well, which was a surprise as i'd expected it to pale in comparison to the raw stripped-down power of the dresden dolls.  my instinct was to go with 10/10, but i figured i'd lower it to balance out my bias (i'm a huge fan of all her stuff tbh, and have something of a celebrity-crush on the woman...).

Rawwwwk. But wait! Industrial-y production. Kind of reminds me of Celldweller. Catchy, but it won't get you laid in Williamsburg. 7.5/10.

Goofy, catchy, endearing and pretty memorable. Not sure I'd actually listen to it again; not my taste, really. Love the drums, though. 8/10

....seriously?  like, 0/10, in fact i'd go into negative numbers if that was allowed....  the backing, and i'm not exaggerating in the slightest here, sounds like a song i made on a program called "Dance eJay" over a decade ago, and why they felt like getting someone's drunk-ass uncle to yell over the top, i'm not quite sure.

Yeah, this was nothing special, but fun for about 2 minutes. After that it got pretty repetitive. Basically it seems like a faux punk band that my dad might be into to reclaim the spirit of his art-school days. 4/10

Enjoyable electropop but close enough to Blonde Redhead that I'd rather just listen to Blonde Redhead.  The vocals are a lot stronger on the verses than the chorus.

edit: forgot to rank, let's say 6/10?
