The only thing I know about half-shirts is that the "cool kids" wore them with acid-washed jeans in the summer camp expose documentary Ernest Goes to Camp.

Further evidence that Tania is a terrible horrible no-good very bad person.

Linds and Zombie, I hope you're both feeling better soon.

* * *

I was listening to Thursday's podcast of Material World[1] (yes, I'm a little behind on my podcasts) at breakfast this morning.  They had an item about earworms (those pieces of music that get stuck in your brain).  Like most people, the way for me to get rid of earworms is to listen to the same piece of music.  It reminded me of someting that happened when I was a teenager:

I heard a song on the radio and wondered what it was.  However, being mildly tone deaf, remembering half the words, etc, I found it hard communicating what it was.  After two years, I had got to the point when I was wondering if the song was even real (but it still kept playing in my head).  When I did my A-Levels, we went on a week-long Biology field trip.[2]  One of the other people brought her casettes and there was the song that got stuck in my head.  I wanted to kiss her.  The song? These Dreams by Heart

{edit}Could someone identify the name of the tune that Quinten Cooper hummed in Material World -- it's driving me wild not knowing wha the name of the tune is.

[1] See http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00t2xct#synopsis
[2] I remember learning about chi squared and about salt marshes there.

Guys I have started playing touch rugby and two weeks ago we were all still fumbling and missing passes and shit, but now we are like all over that ball and it is mentally and physically exhausting, and we're sprinting for basically two hours straight.

Then tonight I am going to a drum&bass night, and tomorrow I have to impress people to help us spread a product we're developing, but it's nowhere near finished yet, and then I am going to Glasgow to see Wild Nothing and Barn Owl (who I met at Primavera and are rad) and then on Thursday I will work at the List, where apparently I am going to reviewing stuff for the magazine instead of just doing stuff for the website and I might get a ticket to Electric Picnic in Ireland for free (but I would have to review it) and that would be amazing. And then on friday we are playing poker and on Saturday I am going to a friend's birthday party and then we are going to go watch The Room in the cinema.

Oh, and I get paid tomorrow so I will have money to do all of these things!

I still haven't had dinner yet though.

Oh hey, awesome! I play touch, too! It's a lot of fun but exhausting if you don't have enough substitutes.

Wait, when you say touch rugby do you mean actually a touch version of rugby (as in rugby union) or the touch version of rugby league (i.e.: sets of six touches and then the ball's turned over to the other team)? The latter's much more common but the former's not unheard of - I played it a couple of times when I was at school and it's pretty weird. (Though I prefer watching union over league - I mean the proper full-contact versions - any day.)

I'm glad this thread went back to being the blog thread! I was worried for a moment there.

I am almost keeling over with tiredness but I just cycled three miles ludicruously fast so I needed to wind down a bit before falling into bed. I've been making treasure chests! And painting things! For the past few days I have been swinging violently between blind panic, sufficient to give me a headache, about how much I have to do, and a comfortable sense that it will all get done easily. I'm in the latter camp at the moment.

That said, I got a props list for the September show this morning (FINALLY) and I asked for a ball-park budget. Every show I have ever done before has given me an exact budget and then we have negotiated if I needed more. My rather wankery producer has said "I'm not going to give you a budget, price everything yourself and I'll tell you whether or not we can afford it". So I have no idea whether my budget is £50 or £500 - it could easily be either, I've had both. Based on what I know about the society funding it (rich) and some insider info on his attitude to budgets (splurge on the set, squeeze everything else including my props), I am going to budget high and hopefully I'll get enough to cover the actual costs. It's a shame he's being so awkward, about some other things as well as this, as it's a really exciting props list and looks set to be a great production.

Anyway, to bed with me.

i get my first real grown up paycheck on friday! also i have planned to spend saturday doing things all by myself because my life has been inundated with being-around-other-people-time and i really really need to spend some time alone, and i can't wait! some of those things aren't as fun, like having to go buy a new tire since i got a flat last week, but others will be super! like going to get a library card/browsing around at the tiny library nearby, and going to see inception (again), and getting a massage for the first time ever! things are feelin' pretty alright.

I have an interview in a week and a half for the job that I'm hoping to have when school starts. (I'd be working in the uni's computer labs.) I hope it goes well, because from what has been happening around the store lately (as well as what will probably happen in the next month or so), I don't really want to stick around for it! I'll be ok moneywise when school starts if I don't get it, but I'd really rather have the job. My friend who works for the labs now thinks I'll be ok, so hopefully I do!

(Though I prefer watching union over league - I mean the proper full-contact versions - any day.)

We don't have any substitutes, but we're slowly accumulating more people to play, so hopefully that will change. It's mental, we're playing 40 minute halves and I'm usually absolutely knackered by that time. We ultimately hope to play touch version of rugby, but since there are a lot of first timers we're incorporating a lot of rules one-at-a-time, so at the moment we're probably a bit closer to the touch version of rugby league.

I'm actually not that big of a fan of watching rugby games. I went to a couple of games here in Edinburgh (Murrayfield if that means anything), and it's fun, but not really for me. I'm not really a big sports watching type of person to start out with, and I rugby can move pretty slow sometimes, so it's not really a game I'll watch on my own.

The d&b place was pretty okay, but afterwards I struck up conversation with this girl who I thought I recognized and was pretty cute, and it turns out she was my across-the-hallway neighbour in first year. Small world!

The music at the North-West River Beach Fest was dedicated to my dad this year. I mean, the 'striver beach fest is just a tiny thing in a tiny town outside of the tiny town I grew up in, it is nothing of note to the world, but it is really nice that they went and did that. It is real touching that people are still thinking of him and remembering everything he did over the years. It is real nice.

He hated "Gordie", he much preferred Gord, but hey what are you going to do when everyone in town has always called you Gordie, right?

Holy shit! So you're playing 80 minute games? That's insane!

I play "official" touch football (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_football_(rugby_league)) which has 20-minute halves, if I played 40-minute halves with no substitutes I'd probably die afterwards. Touch is a really fast game!

true story: i know a girl from high school who caught mono when she was about 14 and has since then given mono to literally every single boyfriend and guy she has ever kissed. seriously, every single guy. i haven't heard of a single exception yet. it got to a point where she had to actively warn people. be glad you're not her!

she actually just got married a few weeks ago which makes the above sort of sweet, in a way. if you are still willing to marry someone after they gave you mono for a month, that is special, damnit.

I don't really understand Mono but I assume I have it since it's so commonplace. By association, I've probably given it to borderline everybody on this forum.

Finally a gift you can't all sell on eBay!

Tonight on the tram home after touch football I eavesdropped on a conversation between a rather slow sounding gentleman and a junkie. When I got on the tram the junkie was telling the slow sounding gentleman about a T.V. show about Australian crime families, which prompted the admission from the slow sounding gentleman that he hadn't watched television for two years (for "complicated reasons"), although the slow sounding gentleman quickly admitted that he'd in fact turned the television on two weeks ago, "Because I like watching Julia". By which he meant our current Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. Later the slow sounding gentleman, when asked by the junkie what he did for a living, explained that he had a website on which he sold "kitchen tools". The junkie was very insistent that the slow sounding gentleman should walk around town and offer his "kitchen tools" door-to-door to restaurants, and further estimated that "one in three or one in five" such businesses would be willing to buy said "kitchen tools" if offered them in such a situation. The junkie was very adamant that restaurants are always willing to buy top-quality "kitchen tools", although the slow sounding gentleman had previously admitted that his "kitchen tools" only sold for around A$10 ("I have to sell a lot of them"). Then the slow sounding gentleman got off the tram and an attractive young woman got on and sat opposite the junkie, who very kindly insisted that she sit there (it was a fairly crowded tram); the junkie then proceeded to lament to the woman that he hadn't had a girlfriend for ten or eleven years.

Meanwhile the tram driver was getting out of his little glass cabin at every stop and yelling jovially and in an unplaceable accent at the assembled commuters outside that anyone waiting for the 86 tram (this tram being the 96, which shares part of the route) should get on his tram, and he'd let them off at the point where the tram routes diverged. After doing this about half a dozen times he finally thought to explain that there'd been some kind of break-down on an 86 tram, and all subsequent trams on that line were taking an alternative route through the city. The tram driver seemed very pleased to be able to help so many people, even though for a long time a large number of those people didn't know why they were being offered such a service.

I for one would not buy Streptococcus pneumoniae from somebody who doesn't know that convention dictates that a scientific name should be italicised, and that the species name (the second name in the binomial classification system) should never be capitalised. Somebody who doesn't know those two basic facts does not sound like a reputable dealer.
