tell me about bands that could be labeled as sludge bands

--- Quote from: Reed on 03 Feb 2010, 12:03 ---In all seriousness, Mastodon, Baroness and Kylesa are pretty good places to start for sludge. I'm pretty sure that you can find the majority of their albums in the mf thread.

No! Don't muck about with bands who just have a little sludge influence (or in the case of Mastodon, very little). It's just not dirty enough, and far too wimpy if you're wanting the thick black hate that sludge delivers.
Iron Monkey do sludge with a bit of stoner riffing. Nasty as hell. Eyehategod are totally essential, smoked out destruction in that Southern way. Buzzov*en are pretty banging and one of the dead early bands. Corrupted mix it up with some horrible doom in order to crush more skulls. Noothgrush are Japanese too, and only a bit less brutalising than Corrupted.
De_El:
Dudes. C'mon. Melvins.
Spluff:
Yeah. Melvins.
And then, listen to some Overmars.

Sludge is a pretty broad genre. It ranges from bands like Kylesa, Torche, and the like, all the way to balls to the wall traditional sludge like you've posted above, and then to the very fringes of post-metal with bands like Minsk or Giant Squid. There's also a pretty blurred line between Stoner, Doom, and Sludge, with many bands being arguably a part of more than one of those genres.
De_El:
As far as somewhere-in-between sludge/stoner/doom bands go, YOB is fucking heavy as hell. Listen to YOB.

Yeah, sludge has always mixed it up with stoner rock, doom and all that. Mostly I just think Mastodon are shite, but I still reckon those sorts of bands don't really represent sludge, more stuff that's sludge influenced. I mean, I love bands like Cursed and Knut have got some sludge in there but I wouldn't recommend them as a starting point for sludge bands, even something like Snowblood might be a bit too far from the template. It's never really been that much of a cohesive genre anyway though, so it probably doesn't matter much.
And yeah, motherfucking Melvins. Get on some shit like Bullhead. Also side two of My War by Black Flag, that's kinda proto-sludge I guess and totally excellent.
