But it raises so many questions! How rich are his parents? If they're so super rich, why does he need a roomie? Why doesn't he have a fancier job?

Going to a private school doesn't necessarily mean your parents are rich. Indeed the fact that Angus refers to it as "One of those super-fancy prep schools for rich kids" suggests an outsider's viewpoint. Scholarship maybe? Or maybe just parents who, like many in the Chinese community here for example, were ready to sacrifice just about anything to pay for education. And if he was an "odd man out" at school, it might help explain his quirky personality, and later life choices.

i personally really like these past few strips. all i see is angus trying to push marigold out of her comfort zone, and at least sort of succeeding at it. i don't think he is being smarmy at all.

I mean, really, nobody takes a tango seriously anymore!

You say that like it's a good thing.

...he was suitably impressed when he met Stephen Colbert (the story of which he relayed back in #1423). That's actually closer to being a business honcho/politico than anything else...

Meeting Stephen Colbert is different than meeting, say, Rush Limbaugh, though.

The difference is the factor of AWESOME.

As in, Stephen Colbert is different from other pundits in that he is awesome.

Eh, not quite sure of that. The "education at all costs" mores in the US were more common at the beginning of the last century; not so much this one.

It's possible, though, that his parents are what we'd call "nouveau-riche": people who made their money in, say, the tech bubble or in the financial boom. Mommy and Daddy may have wanted him to go to a prep school, so he could get into an Ivy League college. I don't think Hampshire qualifies as that, though...

AMEN!! But I also couldn't stand being around Marigold. She is by far the most obnoxious character in this strip. Like really, who gives a fuck about either of them? Just because Jeph wants to bring out his anime side for all of his recent comics and wants to use Marigold to do so..... the characters were so much better without an anime twist to all of them. I liked it when all of the characters didn't have the same face like they do now. The artwork USED to be original. :\

These past few strips with Marigold and Angus are too cute for me to handle. (I mean this in a good way). I'm just really, really hoping that if Marigold is developing a crush on Angus (which I really think she is) that she doesn't get hurt..   :-(

I think Marigold might have the Horizontal Bach in mind.

Trust me, no one has the Horizontal Bach in mind. Well, a few depraved mathematicians, maybe.

I noticed the double meaning, but allow me to add a third— joining the dance, interaction. I have to admit, I'm concerned about Marigold falling for Angus, too, although she may simply be prone to blushing. Still, there is this, for those who want to rake Angus over the coals for 'leading her on' (which I don't think he's intentionally doing); as inexperienced as Marigold is, she's almost guaranteed to get hurt the first time she sets her heart on someone. How many of us really get the first one right?

P.S. Momo's hiding under the bed in total disbelief. It may take her circuits a while to accept what she's seen.

Well, I didn't used to be.  So yeah, lots of fondled mammaries fond memories.

Wait - are you saying that you're not celibate, or that you are?  It's not clear from the context - does "like me" refer to the preceding word celibbate, or to the preceding phrase, not celibate

I'm thoroughly confused.

This is what I was afraid of.  Marigold is gonna get hurt, 'cause she's crushin' on Angus, and Angus (who has no romantic interest in her) is too oblivious to realize it and nip it in the bud.  Which is not necessarily abnormal, but he just doesn't realize what's he's doing to Marigold, and it's sad to me.

They've *just* recently started getting to know each other, right?

Just for a second, put yourself in Angus' shoes.  I know he's (at least how I see it) an oblivious, snarky, witty boy...but he's kind of breaking some social boundaries here.   Especially since he knows Marigold is shy/introverted.  Does anyone else see him as being a little too oblivious?  I just wonder what a real person would be thinking here.  I don't know how I'd feel if a guy I was just getting to know came into my bedroom and started dancing with me.  There are only a few people you let into your personal space, you know?

And even if all that is just reading too much into the situation, he's just a little too condescending to her for my taste.  "Heh, Yeah I could tell."   I can see the double entendre, but jokes still help build Angus' character development.  I already dislike him, but Jeph is going to give us more of a reason soon I bet. :(

No, no, a thousand times, no!!

You're reading way too much into what's going on with Marigold and Angus.  OK, he's snarky and witty, but he's also trying to treat his roomate as less of a shut in, and more of a friend.  Marigold may get hurt, and Angus may be oblivious, but it's not intentional on his part!

There's not a line in this conversation that's intentional double entendre, either.  The whole joke is that's it's an innocent conversation about the dancin' in the last two strips, and the punchline is how we read it!

Like Jeph said in a tweet, "That comic's gonna be quite the surprise for people working backwards through the archive in the future."

I really fail to see why there are some people thinking about Angus as an annoying guy...

I want to quote this because I found it perfect.

Still, there is this, for those who want to rake Angus over the coals for 'leading her on' (which I don't think he's intentionally doing); as inexperienced as Marigold is, she's almost guaranteed to get hurt the first time she sets her heart on someone. How many of us really get the first one right?

Yeah.. How many of us? Can you really blame Angus? And like Carl-E said, he's trying to treat her as less of a shut in which I think it's wonderful... And this is coming from some dude who is kind of a shut in most of the time.

I would also mention that they are not just now getting to know each other. They have lived together, which probably means they have known each other for at least a little while. Angus was probably content to let Marigold play WoW all the time before, but now that they both are starting to interact with a new group of people, he has a strong reason to make her more comfortable with being social. He wants her to be able to come and enjoy spending time with him and all these new folks. That's how I read the situation, at least.

How long have Angus and Marigold been splitting an apartment?

Momo was said to have just moved in, but that doesn't mean Marigold just moved in: she had the sort of clutter it takes many months to accumulate, although I wouldn't put it past her to have moved with it. Even if Marigold just moved in, that doesn't mean they're new roommates. They could have moved together, as Marten and Faye did.

Marigold seems more at ease with Angus than someone like her would be expected to feel with a new roommate.

Well, in 1418 Hanners finds a 10 year old box of Pocky under Marigold's bed. So unless she saved a box of rat poops and brought it with her when she moved (entirely possible), she's been there for at least that long. Trying to find reference to how long Angus has been living there. Actually, no... she's in her mid-twenties, right? So... she probably hasn't been there since she was a teenager.
So much for my theory.
Still looking for references.

Marigirl doesn't seem like the type who'd move as long as she had a good Internet connection, so maybe she has been there since she was a teenager and murdered her parents for the insurance money to support her gaming.

Oh please, she wouldn't murder her parents... herself.  She'd have them murdered, obviously.  (And all he asked was to stay at her place for a while, in return.)

Ah, I figured the two characters knew nothing about the entendre, but wasn't sure what everyone else thought..

No no, I totally agree that he's *trying* to be nice.  So far, the times I've seen him act like an ass (only recently) it certainly didn't seem to be intentionally to hurt anyone's feelings.  It's just Angus and how he reacts to situations.   Still don't like it, but if you can't help it..

What I'm asking is, does anyone else wonder if he's being *written* a little too oblivious? (Being that close is kind of a big deal?)  I'm a big fan of my personal space though, so it could just be ME that's relating to this differently than most.

Also, having to do with how long the two have lived with one another, it just seems like they don't know each other very well?  Or at least that Marigold would've developed this crush sooner?  I dunno.. Just musings.

I can see them not interacting much, especially while Marigold's room was unvisitable. She wouldn't even have been out to the kitchen regularly.

Am I reading too much into things, or is Marigirl dressing in a more mainstream way lately? We haven't seen the purple pants in a while, and the tops have been less obscure and subculturish.

A little off topic, but as good as the art has been lately, I really kind of miss these days...

http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=376

(see, the train of thought was, "you know, Marigold actually has rather a pleasing shape..." followed by the realization of how much the art has changed - followed by the usual "I miss Raven" thought...)

I would. Not moving with it per se, but rather it (or half of any non-trash stuff she owns) coming out of whatever box it was packed in for at least a year and a half.
