Recommend me some COMPUTER games.
« on: 07 Feb 2010, 21:11 »

EDIT: I NOW HAVE BOOTCAMP

Sometimes I get bored of reading and feel the intense need to play video/computer games. Up until I finished high school I'd never really had the chance to play them. Since I finished 3 months ago I have played: Fables I, II, The Legends of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Twilight Princess, RE4, Assassin's Creed, new Pokemons and Bioshock. I'm not done entirely with these games yet so far I've enjoyed the immensely and they have great replay value for me.

I've just ordered a standard 15" MacBook Pro, I'll be seeing it on Wednesday along with my shiny new 32GB ipod Touch (hopefully), and I want some games that I can play on it.

Basicaly, I'd prefer some stuff like the above mentioned games and/or meets the criteria presented in the manifesto of a Bioshock developer.

I'm not really all that fussed about age or graphics quality I just want fun, engaging games with a degree of exploration. I'm happy to download smaller packaged files or buy the game online for less than 40 AUSD each.

EDIT: I NOW HAVE BOOTCAMP

If it's new, you might as well bootcamp it. Find somebody with a crack'd version of Windows and play games on it, because the vast majority of games don't work on a Mac OS - Apple still uses OpenGL, and very very few game developers cover that system now (Blizzard being the obvious exception) For the type of game you want you'll need to bootcamp.

Otherwise there are retailers that sell expensive ports of games that will work on Macs, most of which are out of print. For example, Fallouts 1 and 2 are ported but I think they run something like $40 per game (on PC you can pay $20 for both games)

spiderweb software makes games for mac, and they have big, big demos. Avernum or Geneforge is what you're looking for.

ZELDA IS MY FAVORITE EVAR

Some of the most fun Zelda-ish exploration games on a Mac are the Penny Arcade games:

I have played the shit out of Episode 1, I fucking love it. DIE MIMES

I know that there is a Mac category of games at Direct2Drive, you could check that out.

does Dungeon Crawl Stonesoup have a Mac version? anyone?

if it does, get that. Because that game is awesome and it's always different. It was recently updated so the interface is even better than ever and the screen size has been dramatically increased. Also, there's a new class to play.
oh yeah, and it's free.

Fuck , that game is sweet.

Are you going to run Boot Camp or Parallels?

Who was that question addressed to?

Regardless, Parallels is mostly useless for games. Video hardware isn't used by Parallels, so you can't run 3D games and everything else will be crap slow. You want to actually have Windows installed on a partition (ie. Bootcamp) not just running in an emulator (ie. Parallels.)

Retro-gaming for Mac is actually pretty decent.  A lot of old games have fan ports (in form of cider wraps) that are available in liberal amounts over the net.  As well, there are some good SNES emulators.  (Zsnes and Snes9x are good.)

As for specific games:  Deus Ex is officially ported for Mac, and that's just about one of the best games ever.  Since you seem to like adventure games, and BioShock in general, you should love Deus Ex.

Half Life 2 & its episodes also meet the criteria in the article you mentioned, but those have not been officially ported yet.

Good luck finding recent games that don't have "Sid Meier" in their titles that are good for a Mac playthrough.  :{D

Cave Story is a must-have. The same is Spelunky - try Spelunky for a while, dude! It's awesome!

Still gonna recommend the Spiderweb Software games, since they're awesome no matter what system you run them on.

I'm also currently playing through the first Diablo, and it just strikes me again and again how awesome it is. The gameplay is amazing and quite challenging, the music score beats everything else, and overall it's a great experience.

Not as far as I know; normal shooting is horizontal, and you can of course shoot up, and down if you are jumping.

Shooting up is important at points, though.

This.  It's really old, but the best of the 'Civilization' series.

Get Diablo with Hellfire if you're into early RPGs, it's awesome - great gameplay and great music. I'm playing through it now; tons of fun.

If you liked Bioshock because of the plot really the only game you can play is Deus Ex. It's a strong contender for best PC game ever made.

I just learned that there is a PS2 emulator for OSX:
http://osxdaily.com/2009/10/03/ps2-emulator-for-mac-pcsx2-mac/

I haven't tried it yet, mostly because I'm a little nervous that when I pop in Jack and Daxter it won't be as amazing as I remember it.

Emulating! That's a fantastic idea. I've been hoping to play Melty Blood: Actress Again since it ended up on the Evo lineup (it's ps2 exclusive). I hope it runs ok (and that I can actually find a torrent for it).

Go old school, and try x-com: ufo defense, or x-com:terror from the deep (sequel).

Stay away from the rest of the series, but those two are solid, no matter how old they get.
