BUILD a guitar??

I CAN DIVIDE BY ZERO:
Title says it all; I plan on building my very own solid body gee-tar. Now, I WAS going to just post this in the current Guitar Topic, but since this might get a little attention(and is going to be an on-going thing), I figured it'd probably be best for it to have it's own standalone thread.

First, some clarification why I want to do this:

1) Because buying a perfectly good, guaranteed to have some playability, nice looking guitar is just TOO EASY.

2) I want a Gibson SG. I do not have enough cash for an SG, even the cheapest model(runs for $599 out here), and I REFUSE to get an Epiphone copy, because Epiphones REALLY DO sound like crap in comparison. After running a Gibson SG and an Epi SG through the same amp, I'm confident in saying the Gibson would be worth it.

3) No guitar body shape that I've come across is truly comfortable; I want to design a body that is comfortable to play in at least the regular playing positions.

4) It seems like a fun thing to do. :D

Okay, now that that's been taken care of, onto the goodies;

I've decided to get most of my components from StewMac, because they're (relatively) cheap, and I don't have to hunt all around town looking for odds and ends. Here's what I've narrowed down the guitar's components to be;


* Blank peg-head guitar neck, maple fingerboard (25-1/2" scale)
* wiring kit for SG style guitar(volume/tone pot for each pickup)
* 500k ohm push-pull pot (x2)
* Black Ice passive overdrive(BLACK CUBE)
* Seymour Duncan Custom Custom SH-11 pickup(bridge)
* Lollar Imperial Humbucker pickup(neck)
* Top-Loader hardtail bridge
And, if I'm not mistaken, that's it!

"but what about the body??" might be the question in your heads right now. Well, I've got plenty of lumber in my garage, along with a table saw, plunge router, and other goodies needed to shape the body...

There now, for some clarification on the insane wiring I'm going to throw in this thing;

* The SD will be on a push-pull pot to turn on/off the Black Ice overdrive
* The Lollar will be on a push-pull pot to coil-tap it, to jump between humbucker and single-coil output
So, sorta similar to a JPLP wiring, but with one more push-pull pot, and a built-in overdrive box.

Of course, both the push-pull pots will replace the tone pots from the original wiring kit... I felt that might need clarification, just in case.  :-P

And, if I'm not forgetting anything in my sleep-deprived madness, then that's it! I won't be able to work on this thing right away, as I need to finish up the body design and blanks still, but hopefully I can have this thing finished before the school kids get out for summer vacation.

There now... what do you all think? Yes yes long and boring post, but I think(read: hope) it was worth it. Oh yeah, and of course, if you spot any blatant errors, go ahead and make a joke out of it; while I've been in the planning process for this thing for about a month now, I'm sure I'm missing some details... but with that, I'm going to shut up and post this!

-Measure like 4 times
-don't try and drill thru-holes without a guide
-go slowly
-measure again before you cut

Thanks for the links! Maybe I'll find something of use in one of those sites.  :-o

Having mutilated God-knows-how-many lengths of wood due to not measuring enough, I'll be sure to remember that. :P I hope I won't have to pull out the hand-drill when doing the holes, as I've got a drill press, though I dunno if it's big enough to be able to do the holes. Guess I'll find out when I get there. I hope the addiction isn't too bad... I'd like my paychecks to go into more than just guitar parts.  :lol:
