Best computer speakers for music?
« on: 26 Mar 2010, 22:24 »

Basically what the title implies. What do you guys think are some of the best speakers for listening to music whilst hooked up to your computer? Seeing as most people listen to music this way nowadays, it seems this would be a Pretty Important Thing To Get. LET ME HEAR YOUR OPINIONS

(on a side note, I use the X-540 5.1 Logitech speakers right now, and they sound great when you use the Matrix mode to make 5-channel sound out of 2-channel output. Only issue is that they occasionally have popping, clicking, and buzzing noises, and the music sounds like it's wavering. Which is annoying as fuck. Any ideas what may be causing that?)

the Klipsch promedia line seems pretty good.

Also, have you made sure it's not your soundcard causing the issues?

I would advise against buying anything that is marketed as 'computer speakers' for the same reason I wouldn't advise eating from an indian restaurant that serves pizza. Your computer has a jack-out so you could conceivably connect it to anything you wanted to. Find a way to listen to it through the same system you listen to your music from. If that's as simple as buying a few extensions and a jack-phono cable, excellent.

If you don't narrow your choices down to 'computer speakers' then you'll find you have much better options.

Yeah, listen to Sox. The handiest attribute of desktop speakers are their size, and even if space is an issue there's a whole world of bookshelf speakers out there that are worth considering when you do your comparisons. They may take up a bit more room but imo it's usually worth it.

The best advice I ever gave was 'don't listen to anybody who tells you to listen to me'.
You two just lost a lot of credibility.

Powered 'bookshelf speakers' would be your best bet for music listening. A 2.0 setup would lose the surround sound in games and movies (and the odd 5.1 album), but you'll get much better sound.

I've heard good things about the AudioEngine A2s, but as I have no idea what your budget is...

I have A2s hooked up to my bedroom rig, actually. They deserve their decent rep, although I dare say you can probably get similar quality for a lower price with enough digging, but I'm honestly pretty happy with them since I didn't really feel like comparison shopping too much when I got them. The best thing I can say about them is simple: They're real speakers. They're made out of mdf, kevlar and silk like most of the big boys you see out there.

Altec Lansing makes good speakers.

Right now I have a Boston BA635 2.1 set running through a WOW Thing (a small enhancement box that applies the WOW effects you get in Media Player to all the sound coming from yoru PC). Good for music, but most of the time I just wear my headset.

My black ones are kind of a fingerprint magnet though due to being so glossy. I love black, so I don't really care, but if you're really OCD about such things the white ones might be a better choice. Of course, other types of damage always seem to show up better on white. Tradeoffs!
