Hey jwhouk.
I've got a potato that looks like Baby Jesus. Well, I guess it could look like any baby, but why would it, you know? It's gotta be Baby Jesus.

Anyway, it told me in a dream that we're going to see a new character. I knew you'd want to know.

Howdy jwhouk

Ran into Raven down here in good ol' New Zealand - she was down here on a ski holiday and Nuclear Physics Conference.  Said she'd be back at CoD in two or three weeks to buy a Bucket of Doom.

Yelling Bird was with her too.

Anyone notice how the last four or so comics with Tai have the only purpose of her lines reminding us that she likes girls?

She's the token lesbian, we get it already.

Why not use Sweet Tits? I mean...

YES! But she uses a fake name to keep customers from laughing at her every day (sorta defeats the purpose of an intentionally abusive coffee shop). How about something else bird related. Like ... um ... Mae Swallow?

1. Cosette getting an artwork make-over, getting snarky with Marten [comic #1701: Cookie Cthulhu], now working at Coffee of Doom...?  Cosette certainly seems to have been fast-tracked for character growth.

2. Speaking from experience, 60+ work-hour weeks for extended periods are wearing (more so in the service industry), to say the least.  I am not certain anyone really "gets used to it" without having the occasional psychotic episode &/or nervous breakdown...

3. Tai just cannot resist putting the moves on every cute girl she comes across.  Guess she gets no cookie from Steve.

4. Guess no new cute single girl to be added to Coffee of Doom, so much for a waiting list. :-(

I can't believe potato-Baby Jesus was wrong. :-o

Still, this should be interesting, especially after Cosette and Steve's relationship takes the turn his always seem to do. Too, all the Stevaholics ought to be pleased. If, of course, Cosette gets the job. Her last employer might say you can depend on her to break something.

Not to mention the broadsword and the Malaysian battle spatula, which if I recall correctly Dora threatened Cosette with at their first meeting.

No, it's the same department, it's just now he's behind a desk... (pause for comedic effect)

Cosette behind the counter at CoD... yes, what could possibly go wrong? (pause for even greater comedic effect)

And you KNOW that the job market is tight when people are applying for a fictional job opening! (cue the laugh track)

Yes but in that alternate reality the United States passed universal health care years ago so it's totally worth it.

I'm somewhat confused about Steves way of thinking.

Universal Health Care ? I bet they wont manage that one in a 100 years.

Or did I miss Obama finally managing it ? Then that guy really CAN walk on water. :-o And I also bet someones preparing a crucifixation for him right now.

He passed a "Health Care Reform" bill, but it's still a far cry from anything I'd call "universal."

And God I hope it won't take 100 years.

snub, no one walks on water (unless you take a loose definition and include surfers), especially not politicians.

I think this should really go to the DISCUSS! forum but I'll say this about Obama:

I thought that he would be better for both the US and the world but, since hearing how his administration has extended (and toughened restrictions on reporters) that the Bush administration had, I've lost a lot of respect for him (to the point where I see him as the better part of a horrible choice).  You don't have to take my word for it, just go through the NPR's On The Media archive the last year or two.

Exactly. Hot surfaces, hot liquids, pressurized steam, cramped quarters, and an absent-minded accident-prone person: what could possibly go wrong?

My thoughts exactly.

Hmm, part of me wants to see the level of wackiness ensued by the perpetually clumsy Cosette working at CoD, but the rest of me would like CoD to not be utterly destroyed down to the foundation.  I mean, I know Cosette's tendency is to cause injury to herself rather than others, but the sheer numbers of potential dangers there . . . her employment at CoD could cause the clumsingularity.  Also, for some reason, I see her arguing with Penelope a lot.

I'm actually hoping for Lydia to reappear.  It'd be awkward for Faye, initially, but really what isn't?  Maybe she can help rebuild CoD after it's inadvertantly destroyed by Cosette.

Would really, REALLY love to see a guy hired at CoD.  Maybe Dale would come on board?  It would be nice to see the all-girl team changed up.

Cosette will just scald the flesh off her hands.

So would Lydia, I suspect. I admit I like the idea of Lyds working at CoD. Which she may, since Steve is decreasing Cosette's chances of getting hired by the second. If he continues to act like this, he's grief Dora doesn't need.

I'm actually hoping for Lydia to reappear.  It'd be awkward for Faye, initially, but, really, what isn't?
Aliens who eat radioactive waste and Styrofoam*, then piss booze? No, she'd get embarrassed. A kitten? Nope. Faye'd turn red the first time she pulled an inadvertent Slocombe. I give up; you're right.

Yes. There's a nice snerk area in the forums called Discuss! where you folks can politic to your hearts' content. But we only want to hear about the president here if it concerns a potato shaped like his head. For my money, you just can't get enough of that sort of…<sounds of firearms being cocked> Maybe you'd better post that elsewhere, too.

*I cannot believe the spellchecker wants me to capitalize this.

And we've basically had the same thing, with most of the same flaws, for years here; we called it "Romneycare" until Obama proposed about the same thing, and now we have always supported such a compromise.

I did try to redirect the discussion but, as I don't have the right to post new topics there, a political discussion had already started (i.e. there were several political posts) and I am a political animal, I gave in to the temptation to post here.

Hi, jwhouk.  Glad you could take my call!

I don't see Cosette being hired here.  I think raoullefere's baby-potato jesus is probably right - we're going to see a new face!

A guy's face might be nice for a change, but I don't see Dora doing it.  Equal opportunity be damned, she knows the value of a sassy, sexy baristress.

Of course, she could make an honest man out of Angus... does straw-manning actually pay that well?  At least he wouldn't need sass-training.

Dale's got three jobs (four, if you count WoW), and unless he loses at least two of them, he's not on the market.  It also explains why he's well known at CoD in the first place!

Well, that's my $.02.  Take it for what it's worth...

Oh, and those callers who keep on bringing up politics?  Remember what Otto von Bismark said;

"Laws are like sausages, it is better not to see them being made."

Also, "Politics is the art of the next best." and my personal favorite, "There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children and the United States of America."

On friendship and employment, Dora met Faye and Penelope through CoD so she was always the employer first.

Pennelope's language has certainly gotten coarser since associating with the QC gang.

If Jeph has proposed both Hannelore and Cosette for the new employee, that probably means it will be neither.

Pennelope's language has certainly gotten coarser since associating with the QC gang.

If Jeph has proposed both Hannelore and Cosette for the new employee, that probably means it will be neither.

Or there will be a battle royale to determine the final victor.

My money is on Hanners, she has that River Tam thing going ya know.

Nah, she reads Chaucer. But saying "Even though you're a tremendous, dripping hate-queynte" would have baffled the hell out of everyone.

That made me blink, and I'm Australian. And I can curse in two languages simultaneously. Penelope demonstrates the value of a literary education.

And seriously, what was Dora thinking, coming up with that bogus reasoning? I mean, she lives with Faye and crawls into her bed for warmth given half a chance! Maintaining a proper distance from her employees that is not.

I can't find them at the moment but I think she has in mind the staff-management meeting when she told them that they weren't going to get chocolate fountains or anything and the time when she ordered Faye to be nice to customers.  As she was always a boss first to the staff, she could do those things without feeling too bad.

{edit} Adding link(s).

But you do have a point about warmth.  It's good for her that Faye didn't take too much offense otherwise she could have been a victim of a sexual harrassment suit.

It's easier to become a friend to your employee then it is to become the employer of your friend.  I mean you can actually see Dora and Faye become friends over the course of the comic and it's easy to slip into, especially with the idea that her being the boss comes first.

But friends can certainly work for each other as long as they're both reasonable, intelligent, mature and communicative individuals.

Hence why hiring your friends is usually bad.

Maybe I'm retarded, but when did Faye get a scar on her right breast (see last panel)? Or is that chocolate/caramel from an order?

She got it in the car accident she had when she had her nervous breakdown a few years ago.

Nightson hit it on the head why you can become friendly with your employees, but it is a bad idea to hire friends (and family).  Eventually, you as the employer have to make the hard decision for the good of the business, and it can really make the friendship awkward.
