Do the crappy speakers/soundcards on computers reliably go "up" into these very high frequencies?

I used to work for a manufacturing company that insisted on mandatory hearing checks pre-employment, and every year thereafter, for everyone who worked in a "process environment" (presumably for OHS-insurance purposes). I was included because the server-farm/computer room counted as a process environment. The test involved huge bulky headphones in a special testing booth built into the back of a converted bus.

I actually had an odd hearng "dropout", which I found out when I worked at a public radio station.  We broadcast the Met operas, and they would send a full spectrum of tones, from 20 Hz (you don't hear that, you feel it) to 24 kHz.  The idea was to tweak the soundboard so that the full spectrum was being broadcast.

I could hear everything except the 15 - 17 kHz range, and above 21 kHz.  It faded then returned, and the only way I knew they were sending those tones was the announcement and the VU meter pegging.  But those high tones  - they were killers.  The older engineers just looked at me covering my ears, ad laughed.

That was over 20 years ago, but I can still hear up to 14 kHz (anything higher is gone, and so I can't hear the 15 kHz mosquito ring).

Check it out yourself!

This has been another public service brought to you by WCDT and Coffee of Doom.  Come try our new sanitary lattes!

I'm getting the same fade in and out effect, can't hear 16-19kHz, but hear 20-22kHz just fine, albeit faintly. Of course it may have something to do with the crappy headphones I'm using, so I'm not going to rely on this test, but I can still hear the dog whistle at the end of Sgt. Pepper, so I guess I'm doing OK.

I could hear up to 19 kHz, and nothing past that; but I'm definately feeling a pressure on my eardrums past that.  Incidentally, I'm using some fairly new logitech speakers; the box says they're 10-watt speakers with frequencies from 70 Hz to 20 kHz, which may well be *why* I'm not hearing anything.

I also tried using an app on my Android cell, on that thing I could hear up to around 17.220 kHz before it began to cut out, so probably somewhere around that range for me.  It actually has a nifty extra feature where you can shift the sine wave type, using that I could well hear up to 21.930, but it added white noise so it's sort of like cheating.

I can hear everything up to 17kHz definitely, but the 18 and 19kHz only when I concentrate. 20+ is completely unnoticeable to me.

I can't hear squat with this Tinnitus.
That is why I wear earplugs to (almost) every show I go to, and whenever I go shooting (even if it's "just a .22", it is loud enough to cause hearing damage from even one shot).

I heard up to the 18k, felt more than heard, but still barely heard the 19k, and past that I felt them, but couldn't hear them.

I hear every tone there, but the 17hz is much quieter than the rest. Kind of tingles if you go up the scale quickly.

1. If Panel #3 is a Mirror Universe, it was a Hanners cute-expression one.  (No goatee on Marten and Hannelore is not scantily-clad, so I am assuming "not" a Mirror Universe... )

2. I do like "professional look" Hannelore (kudos on that draw, Jeph).  Makes me wonder how the rest of the cast would look dressed up as fomally.

3. I do agree it is generally a bad idea to hire your friends.  I think Barista Hanners vs. Boss Dora will result in some strife and rifts.  But conversely, I think it will overall be a positive experience for Hannelore (because even bad experiences can have positive effects).

4. I hope that Cosette will also be a Coffee of Doom barista, especially since we have seen she can join in the smart-assery as the rest of the cast.

5. Having Barista Hanners does add a cute single girl to Coffee of Doom, but I doubt that will be a plus for the single guys on the waiting list... .

6. While I am not a stoner, I do find some guilty pleasure in Taco Bell.  Their "Mexcian Pizza" is my particular choice of vastly un-healthy eating when I indulge there.  Of course, if i want real mexican food, I will go to the local taqueria(s).

We have seen things from behind the counter before (panel 2).

Hannelore looks great, except you should never wear red/ox-blood shoes with a black "interview" suit, and the style looks a bit casual too. I guess that just proves that Jeph is a typical guy; he just doesn't pay the proper attention to shoes.

Taco Bell? That's where they serve talking Chihuahuas, yes?

Marten's not really a a cat person, then? He casually tosses Mieville away without even a glance at what obstacles might be lie in that direction.
Note: Me != cat person so not too bothered by this behaviour.

I definitely miss the "damn hot sexy, I wished she would be a real person" choice for todays "Hannelore The Barista... " poll. :-D

I couldn't hear the 14 khz sample and i'm 25. I could hear the 14 khz and the 15khz sine in audacity, but anything beyond that i can feel a bit. I hear some kind of lower pitch spinning down and back up for a very little while at 16 ,17  khz but that could be hardware related. As for aging my parents don't seem to hear crickets chirping anymore, and I'm sure I'm not imagining them.

Does Hanners take new meds? Because she isn't hyperventilating or climbing a lamp anymore when being hugged or something. Marten didn't hug her back, wonder if he did that because of hanners freaking out maybe or just being perplexed.

Don't forget that she has made some improvements and even enjoys physical touches now.

{edit}Given how much progress she has made with regards to physical touching, she's probablly in a better position now (with regards to having a boyfriend) than Faye was.

Marten isn't having any of that UMPHH! reaction that I tend to get when a cat does a flying leap off of me, but my experience is limited to 12+ lb cats that always manage to get their back feet in whatever area would be the most sensitive that day.

Hanners needs to try that again but with her eyes open.  Maybe we could have the firemen come around for donations again.

By "REAL" I assume you mean authentic? There are a few in town (I like Bueno y Sano a lot) but I'm not sure how real any of them are (I'm pretty sure Bueno isn't). There's a place in Easthampton that's about as authentic as they come though. Pulled chicken in a chocolate banana sauce authentic. I tend to prefer the fake Mexican food though, so I haven't explored all the options...

For those of you outside the confines of North America, Taco Bell is a fast food chain restaurant. Three guesses what kind of food they serve. They tend to be cheap, less than palatable, and not very authentic.

If, of course, you had seen Demolition Man with Sly Stallone and Wesley Snipes, you would have known what Taco Bell was.

Oh, and I added that last option just for you, snubnose.

To go a bit meta for a second, it does look like Jeph's setting Hannelore up for some sort of relationship by slowly shedding her inhibitions and psychological hangups.  My secret hope is that she goes for Marten and it sets up for the world-shattering battle royale between her and Dora, just in time to catch the tail wave of the Scott Pilgrim movie's popularity in August.

In reference to the hearing range conversation, just a quick survey; who here has ever been able to tell if an electrical appliance (television, cable box, computer monitor, etc.) has been turned on, just by hearing the high-pitched whine it produces?

More delightful Hanner-expressions! Panels 3 and 4.

Of course, since Marten's been petting Mieville, Hanners' suit now prolly has cat hair all over it. She should prolly have that looked to.

TV's, definitely, but only CRT ones (and CRT monitors).  It's those 435 scanned lines 30 times a second that does it - the little magnets controlling the electron beam switching on and off make a hella whine.

But if my math's correct, it's only about 13 kHz.  And assoon as the sounds on, it drowns the whine out.

LCD panels don't work the same way, but I can definitely sense something when they're turned on.  Probably just the ridiculously strong EM field they generate...

Don't sit too close, kids!

I think it's just the speakers on this computer. I can hear up to 17 on my laptop, but can only hear up to 14 on this computer. I try very, very hard to block out noises, but I'm not very good at it.

Also: I think Hannelore as an employee is a very, very bad idea. I have confidence she can do things correctly. I just feel like she and Dora will have some spats about very stupid things.

I can on my desktop (big old CRT monitor that I got for free and has kept ticking problem-free for four or five years since it was tossed in a dumpster), on CRT TVs, and with my radio/CD/Cassette player. Can't tell with my laptop, the fan drowns out anything that it might put off. I used to think I had some sort of hearing problem because of the near-constant quiet humming in my ears when I was either on or by the desktop all day.

It depends.

I can hear the flyback transformer (which is usually the source of the noise) on a non-flatpanel TV with ease.  I've been told that means the flyback or one of the components just before it is somewhat out of tolerance but not enough to be bad.  The 19" & 21" monitors I've owned were far quieter then the smaller ones.

If it has a fan of it's own I usually can't hear it, even after 2-3 days of being away from work and letting my ears rest.  I've come to rely on those fans to dampen the evidence of humanity that I can't see.

I really want Hannelore to go vegetarian. She seems like the kind of person who would. Like she'd read an article about modern animal agriculture and go "OMG, hormones?? GROSS!!"
I think it would add a lot to the storyline. She should go to Taco Bell and order a 7-layer burrito (that's the veggie one).

Eh, she just seems like the type to make sure her food has been cooked to the proper temperature and then some. And the hormones are  the least of your worries at Taco Bell.

You seem to be under the impression that Taco Bell and others of its ilk actually use meat.

But that's the thing; what they use is technically meat, by Law - it's just not derived from the parts of an animal you would normally countenance serving as "meat" if the person eating it could actually see it. Or how it was prepared.

I can for my netbook but I'm not sure about other ones.

I can for some items, but that's mostly because I work at night when there's not as much ambient noise.

We don't have Taco Bell down here in New Zealand

From what you say, I think we may have better taste - and ain't missing out on much.

But that's the thing; what they use is technically meat, by Law - it's just not derived from the parts of an animal you would normally countenance serving as "meat" if the person eating it could actually see it. Or how it was prepared.

It's all technically meat, even if it's heart and tongue.  By USDA code at least, they don't use organs and other non-muscle tissue, though granted at some point it's really up to the slaughterhouse regarding how much filler 'accidentally' ends up in canner grade beef.   But realistically, it can happen at any grade of beef, not just the low end.  Which is why Japan and China tend to go absolutely ape-shit over the quality of beef products shipped to them, from the US.  But usually, what you're going to find in Taco Bell beef is meat that's, well, old.  In terms of the cow being old.  Domesticated cattle will usually 'live' about 6 years before they're slaughtered,  cows which produce milk might live a little longer, but are also usually slaughtered within a few years of that; the thing is, the older a cow gets, the lower quality it's meat is, so it's got less marbling and tends to have less flavor, and is also tougher.  You can't use it for steaks, so it gets ground up and served up as a low-end meat product.  And let me tell you, you might not be able to tell the difference when you're eating it, because commercially they'll tend to put in a lot of fillers and flavorings and crap, but there's a definate difference between raw canner beef and raw retail beef, because canner beef tends to smell like a dirty sweatsock full of ass and looks like a lifeless pile of grey jellified crap, whereas retail beef has some semblance of structure, no smell, and usually a cheery red color produced by blasting it full of carbon monoxide.  [Themoreyouknow.png]
