I guess it's mostly the imagery (it can't really be anything else, cause there's nothing else in common) but this strip reminds me strongly of Roald Dahl's short story "Georgy Porgy".

(PS-If you didn't know Roald Dahl wrote 'adult' stories, please go to your nearest bookstore and buy a collection and read as many as you can.)

(PPS-By 'adult' I mean 'written for adults', not 'adult' as in 'adult film'......though the Uncle Oswald stories would make Ron Jeremy blush.....)

"Chinese xian hua herbs"...  There are no tone-marks shown of course (Marten probably has "Firefly Chinese" pronunciation anyway), so xianhua could have several meanings:
  • 鲜花 = xiānhuā = "fresh flower", or possibly "rare flower".
  • 闲话 = xiánhuà = "digression" or "gossip" (lit. "idle talk")
  • 献花 = xiànhuā = "offer or lay flowers" (on a grave, memorial etc.)
  • 仙花 = xiānhuā = "immortal flower" (That's immortal as a noun, as in a Taoist immortal. I've never actually seen this combination.*
I suppose the first and last of the above could imply some rare, psychoactive plant. Dosing Hannelore with it could not be a good idea, it might turn her into Dark Hanners, and usher in the apocalypse.

* 水仙花 (shuǐ xiān huā), is the Chinese name for the common Narcissus or Daffodil, sometimes also known as the Chinese Sacred Lily. The leaves, and especially the bulbs, are actually poisonous, so ingesting them might not be a good idea, m'kay?

Today's guest comic brought to you by the warped mind behind a zombie apocalypse webcomic. Hanners got off easy compared to his regular characters. I recognized the webcomic, if not the name of the artist, by the distinctiveness of the talk bubbles in panel 3.

There's a regular size for people?

POUS (People Of Unusual Size) who may find it hard to fit in (due to their unusual size) tend to take up solitary hobbies.  And with some artistic ability (although it doesn't take much, if you look at some webcomics), this is a natural direction in which to gravitate.

That, and radio.

Beats working at a sideshow...

I thought working in radio was being in a sideshow.

The more I look at this comic, the less I like it. It was vaguely amusing at first, but at every look it seems more and more…mean, perhaps even heartless, not to mention it exploits the barrel-bottom of juvenile humor, spiking someone unsuspecting's drink and then watching what happens. I mean, really, fart jokes are one thing (they never go stale, unlike farts themselves), but this? Which brings up another question:

What the hell is wrong with me? (At the moment, dammit, not in general—we haven't got all week).

Edit: Caught another typo. Now to find someone to blame…

Just for clarification, I wasn't making a social commentary, I was referring to Jeph and Rene's twitter convo this morning regarding how small the fair-gendered artists he's met have tended to be.

So, on the Hanners Psychosis Scaletm, how many days without sleep did that one cup of exotic chai latte equal?  I'm guessing somewhere between five and seven.

I've been following Dead Winter for a long while now, even though I usually dislike zombie-apocalypse stories, so I was happy to see his art here.

Not a very great deal mate; I too consider the joke in "meh" taste (the no-man's land between good and bad taste) and, more damning, the characterisation is all a little ...off. Especially Marten.

Yeah... Well, it's a guest comic. They miss more than they hit (IMHO, YMMV etc.).

POUS (People Of Unusual Size) who may find it hard to fit in (due to their unusual size) tend to take up solitary hobbies.
Being predictably petite myself, I find it easy to fit in... shower cubicles, airline seats, vehicles with low head-room etc. More advanced technology is usually miniaturized...  :-D  But yes, I was picked last for netball in gym class...

They do seem a bit... altered.  Probably been sampling the Psychonut Chai Lattes themselves.  Both Marten and Dora look a wee bit crazed, and perhaps a slightly cruel streak has been unleashed.  At least, that was my first impression, looking at the eyes.  Can't see Faye's all that well.  Don't know that there's be much difference...

As for what else may be wrong with you, DK,DC (Don't Know, Don't Care)  :-P

At least, Don't Know.  I only care to the extent that, were it "fixed", you might not be the raoullefere we enjoy so much.

So drink up...

I meant this: it presents an attack on Hannelore, toying with her, playing with her precarious sense of reality. I ought to be enjoying that, but I'm not, and that puzzles me*. The other things that are wrong with me would get us off subject. Damned well can't have that!

The first thought that went through my head upon viewing tonight's strip was: "We don't serve their kind in here."
The second was how well Wil works in the 70's gentleman's mag, or maybe The New Yorker, style art.
The third was the original version of the note would probably have been more successful; so long as Momo doesn't know it's from Freakobot McDevodroid Pintsize.

*Thinking about it, for that strip to end right, Hannelore would've had to murder every mother's son and daughter in the shop. That would have been funny, or at least the kind of funny the strip seems to be going for.

The artist and author of that strip recently portrayed a particularly worthless, loathesome, and hated character in his own webcomic killed by way of something of a circular firing squad, filled with lead from every angle.

It is a bit early in the week for the silly stuff, but I wonder how long Hanners would be in a cell, what with her mother's elite mercenaries storming the building, and her father threatening to drop rocks from orbit on one major city for every hour she's in custody... No, I don't think Fu Manchu is among my honourable ancestors, why do you ask?

Is that Sven displaying his unit? Or someone from one of Engstrom's strips?

I think it's Sven. Near as I can tell, it goes (left-right) Angus, Faye, Dora, Marten, Hanners, Marigold, Sven.

Is that Sven displaying his unit? Or someone from one of Engstrom's strips?
I think it's Sven. Near as I can tell, it goes (left-right) Angus, Faye, Dora, Marten, Hanners, Marigold, Sven.
Yeah, that's my working assumption too, though I was a bit thrown by Faye actually making out with Angus.
And in front of other people too...

... No, I don't think Fu Manchu is among my honourable ancestors, why do you ask?

Actualy, I was thinking more of Ming the Merciless.

If I remember a recent genetic study Genghis Khan is much more likely.

That's the problem with RSS feeds, you miss those little tidbits of info.

I really love what Rene did with this.  The characterizations are spot on, especially in the last panel.  Hanner's "can't look/must look" reaction, Marten's shock, Dora's disgust, Faye's fuming, Angus' facepalm, and Marigold's ... anticipation?

Not to mention Sven's drunken "foot (?) in mouth" expression.  Needs to think before he unzips, that's our Sven.

Reminds me of a piece of artwork (a poster?) I saw a few times when I was a teen, caled "Organ solo".

Definitely NSFW, and tied closely with delusions of grandeur.  Of course, a quick online search only gives me actual organ solos...

They did a genetic study showing that Akima descended from Genghis Khan?!   :-o

I think Border means the Gingster is the Chinese Charlemagne, so to speak. If you've Western European blood, you've got a rather good chance of being related to ol' Chuck. I am—a friend thinks that's funny, keeps calling me "The Hammer" after Charlemagne's grandfather, Charles Martel. Something about me putting my fist through a wall*.

I assume for those of Chinese descent, the same is true of the great Khan? Actually, as large and diverse as China is, this seems unlikely.

The way I've heard it, there's nothing special about Charlemagne or Gengis Khan; we're all descendants of the Julio-Claudian dynasty as well, and nearly everyone in the Middle East is a descendant of Menes, and so on.
