Envy
« on: 04 Aug 2010, 14:04 »

I figured I would make this a thread, since they have a new album coming out, and brooklynvegan just posted a new song and tour dates from them. The new song is pretty interesting - I swear, it almost has an emo/melodic hardcore vibe. But mostly, I'm really stoked to see that they are finally coming through here.

this new song kind of blows though. which is weird cause recently they've been sucking cause they sound like a shitty post rock band and now they sound like a shitty pop punk band. hopefully the other songs dont blow. i might still try to see them in baltimore though, since they are playing with touche amore and they actually rip.

I never really listened to their early stuff, so I wouldn't know. There's another track, though, on this podcast with Aidan Moffat, and it's a lot more like A Dead Sinking Story-era Envy.

Wow.... Uhm I don't know what to say to that track. What the hell? I think they've finally fallen from their throne. That's just standard pop-punk riffing.

I have to listen to Left Hand now...

Lol, that definitely isn't "pop-punk" riffing. There is nothing punk about it.

Oh come on, they sound like they're angling to get a record on Snuffy Smile with that track. It's really straight up punk rock. Which is no bad thing in my book, I remember thinking A Dead Sinking Story was alright but I haven't listened to it in years and the more post rock they got the less I cared. This is an improvement, they needed to be less boring.

Yeah? Since when are emo, melodic hardcore, and pop-punk one and the same? And since when is riffing in hardcore the same as punk riffing?

Anyway, here's another song from the album. I thought I posted it already, but I just saw that I didn't.

also the other new song is the same old boring post rock shit they've been doing lately. envy is a really terrible post rock band, and they are a shitty pop punk band too. they should just be an actual hardcore band again.

I still fail to see how that is a pop-punk song, but oh well. I haven't heard their early material, like I said, but I think they do post-rock better than a lot of post-rock bands.

I think I see your problem here. Hardcore is punk so it's always been the same as punk riffing, same goes for emo. Hence the confusion when you were saying that the song wasn't punk in the slightest and that it sounded like melodic hardcore since that doesn't make any sense. 88 Fingers Louie are a good band for showing how the boundary between melodic hardcore and melodic (or arguably even pop-) punk often doesn't mean much, they flit between the two often without a problem. Or then there's the early Saves The Day records, where the intent is pretty pop-punk but the way they go about it is by making hardcore as poppy as possible. I agree with you that the song's more melodic hardcore/emo than pop-punk, but there's just not that far to go between the two.

Slightly understandable because The Devil Wears Prada is a terrible band.

I meant that it's not punk in the traditional sense; I know that hardcore is a subgenre of punk. Saying that there wasn't anything punk about it was definitely an exaggeration on my part, but I still feel that pop-punk differs from melodic hardcore/emo enough, that it's wrong to so confidently label the song as such.

Especially if there is such a thin line between one style and the other - that just means there are little things separating them, but they are distinguishable details regardless. I can see what you guys mean, though. The main riff could pass for emo or pop-punk, so it really goes either way. I think it's cool how Envy put their own spin on the pop-punk thing, though.

I still fail to see how that is a pop-punk song

This song is like several dozen songs by The Ataris only with screaming vocals.

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to claim that "melodic hardcore/emo" is a specific genre, I was just trying to explain what kind of sound I'm referring to, due to lack of a better term.

And I don't really mind people correcting me on this stuff, because I've never had the greatest knowledge of genres, and people label stuff differently on every board I've posted on.
