[Of course, if you like demonstrating you ignorance, wasting your own time and pissing people off, be my guest. If I were talking about you, which I'm not. Because I'm not talking about anyone specifically. I'm just saying, if one where to engage in behavior like that, what that may or may not accomplish, if anything. (and if it lasts for more than four hours, see your doctor)

Or you could go into a general tirade for hours on that point.  Takes two to flame war.

On a different note - who were the three ladies Angus had to act as judge between?

I don't get half of the references in QC. But that's okay! Either I'll decide I can't be bothered and forget about it, or a quick google usually tells me what I need to know.  Great way to discover new things.

And, I mean, references are everywhere. You can't be insulted when one crops up that you don't understand - then you're going to spend a lot of time being insulted.

Repeated references in various things are why I can quote movies and TV series that I've never watched.

Watch this, please.

Er... Well, the Judgement Of Paris was between Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. So far, we've only seen Angus choose between Marigold and Faye, neither of whom much resembles any of their classical antecedents. So... I don't know.

I'm more and more surprised that still no woman here has rejected the "every lady likes to think she's got a little bit of Helen of Troy in her" part. :?

Shall we men return to the old ways and fight to death over the ladies ? :D

I dunno, there's definitely a classical greek feel to them in the new poster!

OK, so it's an art-nouveau concept of classical greek, but that's pretty close!

Helen, n. A unit used by girlwatchers as a measure of feminine beauty.

Like the Farad in electricity, it's too large a unit for routine use - very few women's faces can "launch a thousand ships". More practical are the millihelen, enough beauty to launch one ship, and the microhelen, enough beauty to launch one canoe.

I would just like to point out that Angus is walking behind Faye in most of the panels, which will enable him to check out dat assss.  >_>  Not saying he's trying to do that.  He should probably be careful how much he swings his arms, though.

Yes, I didn't get the quote reference at first. Then I yahooed it and did, and knew why I didn't, too: Bouncy sets my teeth on edge. So, of course, now I wish I hadn't. Thus it goes.

I'll be honest, when I saw the lyrics quoted, my first thought was this...

But I've been to too many dance recitals, and watched waaaaay too many preteen girls gyrate to it not to recognize that song's lyrics!

Not gonna lie. I'm a fair bit of a feminist, but I wouldn't turn down a couple of hot dudes fighting over me. Justsayin'.

Also, I dig that David Mitchell thing. Hello, ET-and-moon and the Drink Me bottle on the ground and the BTTF start. Speaking of, I used to love Animaniacs. I know, for sure, that I did not get even half the references in that show when I was 9. But it was such a great show that I can watch it now and think it's hilarious. Because I get the references now. But I really liked it when I didn't get half the references, because it was just that fun.

Hey, this is an interesting point. Someone should have picked it up and run with it by now.

Faye has deliberately distanced herself from several aspects of her native culture. Maybe this is one of them.

Quote
(First lines of this little movie from over 70 years ago)
Brent Tarleton: What do we care if we *were* expelled from college, Scarlett? The war is gonna start any day now, so we'd have left college anyhow.
Stuart Tarleton: Oh, isn't it exciting, Scarlett? You know those fool Yanks may actually *want* a war?
Brent Tarleton: We'll show 'em!
Scarlett: Fiddle-dee-dee. War, war, war; this war talk's spoiling all the fun at every party this spring. I get so bored I could scream. Besides... there isn't going to be any war.
Brent Tarleton: Not going to be any war?
Stuart Tarleton: Why, honey, of course there's gonna be a war.
Scarlett: If either of you boys says "war" just once again, I'll go in the house and slam the door.
Brent Tarleton: But Scarlett...
Stuart Tarleton: Don't you *want* us to have a war?
[she gets up and walks to the door, to their protestations]
Scarlett: [relenting] Well... but remember, I warned you.

You have The Vampire Dairies,  Steel Magnolias, and Designing Women, too, at least. And, heaven help us, Matlock.

Has less to do with being Southern, so far as I know (And I've been here a while) than class. The less a girl has, the more she wants this sort of thing.

I'm tempted to point out that most of the whites in Mitchell's book are only a generation or so removed from Ireland, if that. So the next question may be how accurate The Quiet Man is—there's a brawl, essentially done to please the girl, and no mistake.

OMG he had jokes about sex THAT early in the comic ?

(I just googled "alphabet trick" after Wikipedia drew a blank)

I totally missed that.

Whow. :-o

Sounds really dangerous to court a chinese woman. :-D

I never even heard of these things before !

(I actually know one guy who married a chinese woman, though I havent seen her yet. Or him, since he married; they are mostly in China. No mortal combat involved, though, as far as I know)

Btw, Jackie Chans new movie "The Karate Kid" is huge fun. Of course the basic story is very predictable, but the movie is full of jokes (Jackie Chan type) and one sees a lot of famous locations in China.

Arguably the first sex joke in the comic was #1, but if you define sex as involving >=2 people, #8 doesn't count because it's about sex with an AnthroPC. #10 is debatable. #18 is clearly about sex. Then there's #19.

I'm not sure that Faye's intent was sabotage when she was telling the story. I think they both realized that what they were describing might be an eminent possibility, and if they weren't careful, things might go to far to quickly. And then it got awkward, and Angus did what most people do in those situations: said something stupid that made it worse.

I don't think the S.S. Fangus is foundering on the rocks just yet, but she is sailing into uncharted waters.

I confess it wouldn't be my choice of conversation-topic on a first date. But then, this isn't a typical first date is it? Faye's been sparring with Angus for comic-ages, beat him up a couple of times, and accidentally poisoned him with dairy products (the deadliest of food groups).

Normally I wouldn't regard the sort of joint that has paper-napkin dispensers on the table as dinner-date-worthy (in Australia that is normally the mark of a fast-food eatery, transport café etc.), but Dora did brief Angus that it was Faye's favorite place, so I'll give him a pass.

I hope Faye knows she needs to wait until she feelings for Angus before she sleeps with him.  'Cause otherwise, Angus won't be able to sexually compare to the love machine that was Sven Bianchi.  If she waits until she's got feelings for Angus, then said emotional state will bridge the sexual gap.

Angus better hope she waits too... not that he knows he will be found wanting, but he'll find out soon enough.

What makes you think that Sven iwould be a better lover than Angus?

1) More practice.

2) Faye basically couldn't get enough.

But I never said Sven would be a better lover.  I just said the sex would probably be better.

Being a better lover (emphasis on "love") iis what would put Angus over the top.  Tenderness, emotional connectivity, all that stuff.

All that said, I have absolutely no empirical data to suggest that Angus isn't a whirling dervish in the sack.  It just... well, it seems that way on the surface, given his attitude and whatnot.

At this point Angus' response needs to be, "So, how about those Argos?"  (you may substitute any other sports team here to effect the awkward topic shift)

I would not normally comment on the technical aspect of Jeph's drawings, being someone who long ago realised that no matter how much I practised, I was never going to get shapes and angles to come out on paper the way they were in real life (and swapped to photography to fulfil my creative urges).

However, Faye's hand on the table in panel 4 is really bothering me. It can't be connected to her arm unless she's doing a Mister Fantastic. No forearm is visible and the elbow is below the bottom of the frame so the forearm must be horizontal, giving an impossibly long hand.

I can't look at it without thinking there's a hungry hobo hiding under the table, hoping the sexually-charged discussion will distract them enough to not notice he's groping around trying to score free food off the plate.

Or she's changing into a werewolf...

Right.  I had to tell this to someone the other day when they pulled an "I was only kidding"...

If you have to explain the joke, it's not funny.

But if you have to tell the other person that it was a joke, then it wasn't.

But Angus was joking.  I saw it that way.  A little lame, yes, but sparring right along.  The problem was Faye's reaction face - I think she's got way too much emotional investment here for that joke.  Somehow, it got too close to a truth for her (probably that same boyfriend), and she got taken aback.

The only thing Angus could or should have said to that face was a quick apology, then let it pass.

I'm prety sure that's not in his repertoire, though!

Oh, and Binary?  That's her left hand on the table, not her right.  The forearm's hidden by the table and her body.  All's well.

I wonder too.

1) More practice.
Um.

2) Faye basically couldn't get enough.
Ok, that one counts.

Hmm ok I have been wrong in such things before, but yet I dare to disagree again. She's not having her whole hand on the table, just the fingers. The palm however is bent down so the forearm doesnt have to be completely horizontal.

Its maybe looking a bit akward and maybe its not 100% correct, but meh, its just a Comic.

At the risk of drawing akronnick's ire, I'm going to ask what the alphabet trick is.  What's the alphabet trick?
