WCDT August 16-20

Whoah!  I get to start the weekly thread for a change!  (Mega-early comic!)

Ok, is it me, or did Faye go sans-bra?

I may well lose my comic geek cred for this, but I didn't think the SP movie was really all that great.  Don't get me wrong, the book was fantastic.  But with the exception of a few scenes, the movie really wasn't pieced together nearly half as well.

Also, does this mean Angus will eventually have to fight Dora "sexy phase" Bianchi?  Cause I'm pretty sure he'd die.

Somehow that makes me think of Dora as Trinity...

Oooo-Kaaaay... Joke that totally required Google/Wikipedia for me to understand. Scott Pilgrim? I must be getting old or something. I notice that they cast an actor of Asian descent to play an Asian character in the movie. Somebody probably got fired for that.

A) Jeph, you are a funny man and you made me giggle with the last panel.
B)  Faye needs to wear a bra.  Gravity is rarely a busty girls friend.

Yes.

(The line more to the left is the scar. The other line is the Promised Land.)

ALSO: I am 95% sure Jeph used the same sound effects (ennh! enngh!) for Marten and Angus fighting that he used for the turtle-humping-a-shoe youtube video a little while ago.

Forget Pilgrim and the rest—those're King Kirby poses! Awesome.

Given the cleavage separation, it does look like Faye's set them free under that dress. If so, she really has loosened up.

Ah hah. A hahaha.

You mean the work up to the date, or the slap fight?  A slow-motion slap-fight would be hysterical...

Also, I'm not sure Faye was meant to be braless, I think the attempt to draw a dress with a low neckline extended the above-the-boob region to the point that hey come out looking lower.  He usually draws her in a t-shirt or tanktop/wifebeater.

Also, Angus is right - she looks great in the first panel!

I think it's the smile...

Have you heard of this wonderful invention known as the world wide web?

It was even a comic book for years before the movie came out.

Y'know, about a third of the webcomics I read have had their authors moistening their pants over this movie for the last month or two now. Even Warren Fucking Ellis is tweeting about it. I can't escape the thing without abandoning the internet entirely.

All I can do now is hope this movie fails miserably and leaves the author with nothing but whiskey-soaked crushed dreams. Because then I'll never have to hear about this damn movie ever again.

Ummm... the Scott Pilgrim author, who was heavily involved with the movie, is Canadian, not American.  True, it's sometimes hard to tell the difference, but there is one.

Also, it really is everywhere;  I'm an NPR junky (worked at various stations from 1978 - 1990), and just on NPR alone we have

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129183469

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129093669

http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/07/27/128800109/a-fan-s-notes-being-a-non-spoilery-non-review-of-scott-pilgrim-vs-the-world?ps=rs

And lastly, http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2010/08/12/129150813/-scott-pilgrim-versus-the-unfortunate-tendency-to-review-the-audience

Also, seeing the original comic art for the first time, it's rather reminiscent of Meredith Gran's (of Octopus Pie) art.  I don't know about the movie, but now I really want to read the comic!

Scott Pilgrim VS The World was kind of like Twilight for a male audience.

Nonetheless, I guess it was better than most mainstream movies of its genre.

If I'm ever going to see that Scott Pilgrim movie, the ads better be showing the stupidest scenes in the entire movie.

And I refuse to believe Marten girlier than Michael Cera.

A couple of observations:

1. Faye really has cute-face in panel 1!  Like she's genuinely happy and not freaking out!  This is a good, yet surprising, thing.
2. Her dress may be low-cut, but Faye would not go without a bra, particularly on her first actual date in awhile.  OK, so that's just my interpretation (duh), but seriously, it seems likely she'd want those puppies reined in for now.
3. The perspectives are great in the "fight" scenes!  Especially panels 2 and 5 -- hell, Marten pointing dramatically almost deserves to be its own meme.
4. The ending slapfight is hilarious and awesome.  Though I suppose this could start off the Marten/Angus shippers . . .

All in all, a great strip!  I'm glad Jeph's feeling better now.

I cannot read Angus's lines without thinking of all the times I heard that from Soul Calibur 2.

I haven't seen the movie or read the books so I withhold personal judgment, but I did look it up a couple weeks ago after I heard the buzz. The concept at least is interesting and tongue in cheek.

[MorkVoice] Humour! ArArArArAr [/MorkVoice]

Trying to make Akima feel better by using references she knows?  :-D

Contrary to popular belief:

(a) not everyone lives in the same country
(b) movie theatres around the world dont all show exactly the same movies
(c) many english movies never travel to to other countries

Or in short: scott what ?
And yet you post that in the forum of an American webcomic, made by an American, which you viewed by accessing the 'internet' which has tools called 'search engines' that you could have used (like, say, Akima did) instead of bitching- about a movie based on a Canadian graphic novel series. Oh Snub, I can always count on you to say something silly for me to mock.

Scott Pilgrim VS The World was kind of like Twilight for a male audience.

Nonetheless, I guess it was better than most mainstream movies of its genre.

Your opinion is your own to keep, but I'll note that there is a key difference: Scott Pilgrim is a gleeful parody of its subject (videogames). Twilight is a morose self insert fic that challenges the conventions of its genre (vampires) only because the author was unaware of them.

Then Marten's finger would be -- ew . . . .  >_<  It's the new hot dog vs hallway.

And if it's the Marten/Angus shippers vs the Marten/Steve shippers, will the winner of that go on to battle the winner of the Sven/Marten shippers vs the Sven/Wil shippers?  @_o  As long as there's plenty of slapfighting, it's all good.  And yes, ceilingcat will be watching.  With Pintsize.

That was the whole point.  Jeph started laying the Fangus groundwork months (more than a year??) ago just for these two strips. By the next strip, their attraction to each other will be as forgotten as whatever carnage Marmaduke is perpetrating today.

Also, he made references to two different American, English-language pop culture entities on two consecutive days. Clearly he is a racist who thinks all for'ners oughta be burned at the stake.

I know right, is she trying to pick a fight already, She should just let things be like Fonzie.

And just as an aside, apropos of nothing at all, or absolutely fucking anything, and I'm not talking about anyone specifically1

But...

If you're genuinely getting upset because you don't get a pop culture reference in a Webcomic,

GROW THE FUCK UP!!!!!
And learn to use Google,(or bing if you no longer feel comfortable using the product of a formerly non-evil gigantic corporation and feel better using the product of an evil gigantic corporation that everyone knew was evil all along.)

Jeph and other webcomic artists routinely use references to many obscure pop culture references. I enjoy finding out about knew things, and like it when an artists pushes me outside of my pop culture comfort zone.

When I first read this, I had never even heard of Portal, but I liked the joke, and found out about a game that I bought and enjoyed immensely.

It's OK to not get the joke, it's ok to still think the joke is funny even if you don't understand all the levels.

I myself can't even count the things that I have found and learned by reading this and other Webcomics (except for Ctrl-Alt-Del, which I only continue reading to see how much of an asshole Ethan/Tim can be2).

Rant over, Hulk feel better.

Thanks for putting up with me, feel free to flame away.

1. I'm really not. You're so vain, you probably think this song this diatribe is about you.

2. I actually do like CAD, don't tell anybody. (Tim/Ethan is still an asshole though.)

These results not typical. Offer void an any state that's spelled with an 'e.' Like Idaho.

OMG the text keeps getting smaller! I'm shrinking!!!!!!!Help meeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brr.

Do I really have to follow every reference to stuff someone throws at me ?

No, I really dont.

If I'm ever going to see that Scott Pilgrim movie, the ads better be showing the stupidest scenes in the entire movie.
I remember bad trailers of good movies ... but ... they are very rare.

<snip>

If you're genuinely getting upset because you don't get a pop culture reference in a Webcomic,

No, I KNOW this diatribe is about me. I'm not upset about not getting the reference. I just didn't recognize it, and knew someone on here would say what it was.

No, I really dont.

Of course not, you'd never have time, and most of the time you wouldn't care for what the reference is, nor would a cursory knowledge of the reference add much to the humor in many instances.

However...

Making the effort to complain on an internet forum that you don't get the joke is not an efficient use of scarce resources.

Starting a flame war on an internet forum about how the joke went over you're head does the following:

   1. It demonstrates your ignorance. There's nothing wrong wih ignorance, it's the state we all share on the vast majority of human knowledge. But it's not something to be proud of. Personally, I prefer to keep my ignorance to myself. I'm not familiar with Scott Pilgrim. From what I've seen, it's not something that I would be particularly interested in. But I'm not going to proclaim my disinterest as a badge of honor. And I certainly wouldn't poke fun at people who are interested. (that's only appropriate for people who like Twilight. And CAD)

   2. It wastes your time. In the time it takes to make a post about how much you didn't get a reference, you could Google whatever it is that you don't get, and maybe find a new creative work to enjoy.

   3. It pisses other people off. People who populate internet forums take the things they are fans of very seriously. There was an episode of The West Wing where forum denizens where compaired to the cast of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. (And yes your irony meter should be going off about now(And don't start about how that wasn't actually ironic.)) I once participated in a discussion about the gross weight and performance of a WWII era jet fighter. That thread went for about 40 pages (!) (hell, it may still be going, and that was four years ago.) The point I'm trying to make is that some things are Serious Business, and maybe it's not worth pissing everybody off just because you spent twenty seconds of your day reading a webcomic that made a reference to something you've never heard of and you felt dumb for a second.

Of course, if you like demonstrating you ignorance, wasting your own time and pissing people off, be my guest. If I were talking about you, which I'm not. Because I'm not talking about anyone specifically. I'm just saying, if one where to engage in behavior like that, what that may or may not accomplish, if anything. (and if it lasts for more than four hours, see your doctor)

Why thank you, thank you very much.
