By the way guy, if you end up getting into The Byrds or Sloan, give a listen to The Bye Bye Blackbirds and The Zebras. They're more recent, the former being from the Bay Area and the latter...Australia I think?

If you like Dan le Sac vs Scroobius pip, you ought to check out Das Racist's new mixtapes. They're available for free download. here's one: http://www.djbooth.net/index/mixtapes/entry/das-racist-sit-down-man
Tommy recommends The Velvet Underground if you "fancy a challenge," but for my money VU's far more essential listening than the Stones or the Byrds. No slight on them really, the Velvets just did so much that's influenced a great deal of the music I listen to now quite directly. Really I can't recommend them enough. Nico's voice in their first album may turn you off (though if it doesn't, good on you), but she's only on the first one, so don't pay it too much mind.
Oh and if you like Bat for Lashes remotely listen to this album
Hounds of Love

Everyone should listen to Das Racist, though.
Everyone.

OAKTOOOOOOOOOWN
see also: a lot of Rilo Kiley, just avoid the album with "Portions For Foxes" on it
see also also: Les Paul and Mary Ford. The Beatles owe a considerable amount to this duo.
