I propose that wombats are awesome. Other awesome animals include (but are not limited to) Giraffes, Platypi, and Salmon.

I spent a month or two in Valdez, we had a snow fort built into the front yard that had a window overlooking the street..  from 20 feet up.

I have stepped down from a snowbank to the roof of my house. Snow is awesome and terrifying.

Truly in the spirit of this thread!

Raccoons are awesome also,  Did you know some fool imported racoons into Germany in the 1930's? They spent all of the 60's, 70's, and 80's trying to extirpate them.  No luck with that.  Now they are migrating into France.  (History repeating itself?)

Where is "here"?  Texas is great this time of year.  Summertime not so much...

Bah, those places look worse than they are.  Once you get to a certain temperature, it gets too cold to snow.  The cold sucks all the moisture out of the air and it literally can't precipitate.

I'm in the Canadian prairies.  It's -20 Celsius here (that's -4 for those of you who speak Fahrenheit) and we have no snow outside.  It's been cold or it's been precipitating.  We had freezing rain about a month ago, but nothing since then.  Weird.

My father's mother was from Manitoba and his father from Quebec.  I think that is why I'm from NYC.

And in north Texas, no one has snow removal equipment.  If it snows, we just wait for it to melt.

Interestingly, I can see the original post and the quote on the same screen, and the "cars" are out of synch.

*edit* and the "quote" quote is out of synch with the quote.  I guess the text area keeps getting slightly shorter due the nested quote boxes.

Man, try living in the American Midwest. This summer was regularly over 100, with 80% humidity. Winter hasn't really gotten good and started yet, but we had a ton of snow last year, and we almost alway have at least one major ice storm where I live. I wish I lived in a place with EITHER a terrible summer OR a terrible winter. Of course, I've only seen a few snowbanks taller than myself, and I am rather short.

Ah geez, I'd die. I'd probably literally die. I spent a summer in Chicago, and spent most of it face down in the shower with the water on cold.

Oh man, I've always thought of Chicago as having a relatively pleasant summer what with the nice winds that stir up over the lake and everything. My husband is from there and jokes that the whole city is air conditioned (of course this past summer was an exception). He and his family never stop complaining about how awful Kansas City summers are.

Oh, we hit triple digits in the summer, too.  There's actually not much midpoint, probably much like you.  Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, spring and fall each last about a week, just long enough for the drastic temperature change.

Why do we live here?  Heating/air conditioning.

Where I'm currently living (Guadalajara, Mexico) we're at 26 degrees Celcius at noon, and as I type, it's 21°C. Coldness here means 1°C at 5 AM, in January. Last time it snowed here was in 13th of December, 1997, five centimetres at the outskirts, which promptly melted as soon as the sun rise.

Yet people are complaining that it's too cold.  :psyduck:

At the Zoo of Guadalajara we have polar bears. Poor boys in May eat fish popsicles all day long (38°C at noon). Yet in summer the heat is around 33°C. I love this city.

May I inquire where on the prairies? Your clearly not in the grubby hellhole that is Edmonton. We have plenty of snow to go around, if you'd like.

It basically never snows in Sydney, though a few years ago there was a freak light dusting in the western (inland) part of the city. Up in the southern mountains of course there is skiing in winter. Our main problem with frozen water falling from the sky is hailstorms in summer. Hailstones can be as big as this:

And hard enough to smash roof-tiles, punch fist-sized holes through the laminated windscreens of parked cars etc. You don't want to be caught out in the open.

And in north Texas, no one has snow removal equipment.  If it snows, we just wait for it to melt.

North Texas had its greatest snow day ever last year right around Valentines Day. It snowed 12-13in in about 24hrs, DFW shut down. Massive power outages, grocery stores like madhouses, it was insane. I built a 7ft tall snowman with some friends...  IN TEXAS. Still blows my mind.

Where is "here"?  Texas is great this time of year.  Summertime not so much...

Texas, of course.

Central Texas, checking in!  We get snow like once every three or four years, it's enough to make yards pretty and white but I've never seen it snow enough or remain cold enough to let it stick to the roads.  Granted, we pay for this lovely mildness by having summers that are over 100 degrees for weeks in a row (I think we set a record this summer with 32 days in a row where the high was over 100, with a record high of 108 or something like that).

Iceland doesn't get all that cold in the lowlands but gets lots of snow.

Pennelope and Wil should move there. Years ago I read that it had the world's highest per capita number of bookstores. One of their major historical political figures is remembered primarily because of his poetry -- that's how much they respect poets.

Our main problem with frozen water falling from the sky is hailstorms in summer
Yes, we get those in North Texas also, frequently in company with tornadoes.  But we are south of "tornado alley", that part of the central US where 40% of the world's tornadoes occur.

I remember that.  Most of the guys at work are transfers from New Jersey, so we were all "Pish, what do you mean the supermarket is closed? It's just a little snow!"  We really tick off the native Texans.

The local joke for Chicago is that if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes.

This summer had some gawdawful warm days, but the worst was the crazy fucking rain.  Like several days straight, in June.  And July.  With nasty heat/humidity in between.  I think I saw more mosquitoes this year than during the past decade combined.

We had some great Indian summer during October, but once we crossed the November threshhold, the city suddenly remembered it was autumn.  Overnight frost, brrr... good time for blankets and kitties.

Stay away adorable baby tapir!

We must keep them away from our precious bodily fluids!

I liked the rain.  >.>  Although I don't seem to remember the heat/humidity you complain about.  Then again, I'm out in the (far) suburbs.  And yes, it's been rather cool the past couple of weeks.

Oh, and on the topic of animals, given that a lot of people seem to be from Texas... why weren't armadillos mentioned?

Because armadillos aren't all that cute in person?  Although my daughter thinks they are very cute.  She also thinks koalas are very cute, and actually got to hold one when she visited Australia.  She has also claimed that ostriches hate her.  This was borne out recently: We went to a petting zoo at the Texas State Fair.  There were hundreds of people there, and all the ostriches were glaring at her alone.

The Texas State Fair is pretty cool.  It's bigger than, and almost as good as, the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show in New Jersey.

Well, Texas doesn't seem to have a lot of other native or semi-native animals that might qualify for the cute list... although a quick google search of "Texas Animals" brought up a picture of Meerkats of all things... must be from some zoo.

The last State Fair I remember attending was in Minnesota... although I think I might have passed through another one with not much memory of it (in Yosemite? Maybe?).

Meh, as stated, armadillos aren't that cute.  In addition, knowing that they have A) Very Sharp Claws and B) A hellish combination of infectious bacteria all over said claws, they lose any cuteness they might have had.

Finland checking in. Pretty mild here at the moment (a few degrees below zero centigrade or high 20s in Fahrenheits). May be one inch of snow. Nothing to prevent me from riding my bike to work (it's only an 8 mile commute). Northern Indiana (=Notre Dame) occasionally got a lot more snow than we get here. Thank the lake effect! I recall that one time I was flying home for Xmas, and the forecast was "-20 F and three to five feet of snow". You bet I took an earlier shuttle bus to make it to O'Hare in time.

Last summer was pretty bad here. Further inland it climbed up to an all time nation wide high of 99 Fahrenheit (37 centigrade). If the trend continues, we may the break the century mark any decade now...
