So what was the point of that thread?
« on: 19 Nov 2010, 13:44 »

What was the point of the You people managed to get a WCT locked and it wasn't even me who did it. thread? Just posting odd pictures? I apparently made the mistake of answering the title seriously, then got what I wrote over written by Jeph twice (and have the dubious distinction of being the only one in that thread with my own words there since I kept reediting to ask what was up.) I'm usually okay at figuring out roughly what people are doing, but this just mystifies me.

My original statement and what I said after the first overwrite:

Hey, I didn't get it locked- I wasn't trolling nor was I reporting anyone. Not exactly fair to us not involved in that to have the thread locked, is it? I feel for Est, but killing it for everyone because he has to deal with some abuse of the report function is a bit of an overreaction.

... Editing what someone else said because you didn't like it? That's not cool.

possibly while drunk, Jeph decided to fuck with us. He posted a bunch of pictures that he found amusing/vaguely inappropriate. The best course of action would have been to join in the fun by posting similarly inappropriate images, or to just ignore it until he ran out of steam.

Jeph twittered that he decided that the best way to blow off steam was to troll his own forum.
I guess he's more than a bit pissed off about what happens here, and possibly a bit pissed per se.

And I can imagine why. This forum hasn't been the nicest place lately for anyone, let alone for QC's creator. If I would've been in his shoes, I might just have shut it down, at least temporarily.

Gee, usually he just ignores us.

That's what I did.  Missed the whole last half of the WCDT collapse.  Took Reiver's advice, lay the UBMEOD down, and graded probability exams.

Everyone failed.

Ah. It seems rather counterproductive to troll a place because... there's too much trolling.

Can you link us to some videos?

I've seen drunken squirrels on youtube, and that's hilarious. Skunks can only be moreso.

In his shoes I would have either:

A. Spammed the shit out of a bunch of threads with those pictures instead of making a thread full of them
B. Just set fire to everything. Not just shut down. SET FIRE. BURN BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN

Yeah. Most of the older posters know it, but it may not have been brought up lately. Pretty much, Jeph has repeatedly commented on how he despises the QC Discussion section of the forum and most of the stuff that gets posted there. He's threatened to just delete the forum multiple times when he's sick of people taking QC too seriously. If this seems like an exaggeration, just read the description of the QC Discussion section from the main forum page.

This being the case, he found it pretty darn amusing when it got bad enough when someone who doesn't share his hatred for the place got fed up enough to lock the thread.

*edit- also yeah he only comes in here when he's drunk so there's that.

Yeah. Most of the older posters know it, but it may not have been brought up lately. Pretty much, Jeph has repeatedly commented on how he despises the QC Discussion section of the forum and most of the stuff that gets posted there.

It's not JUST the QC Discussion forum.  You only need to take a look at the TVTropes page for QC (which wears Jeph's comment on it like a badge of honor) to see it's really that he just despises people getting all Serious Business about QC anywhere within his sight.  Not an unknown thing for creators.  Some enjoy watching people discuss their creation, but for others it's like watching their pride and joy be sexually molested.

Have you noticed how many popular webcomics do NOT have discussion forums?  I think it's a shame myself, I enjoy the ability to share with fellow fans of a work, but an awful lot of webcomic artists don't even set up forums at all.  At least Jeph does have one (albeit one he allows to exist while holding his nose).  They're not all bad; the forums for T Campbell comics are usually fun, so's the one for Gunnerkrigg Court.  Megatokyo's forum kind of exists separate from the comic, but the storyline discussion section was at least back in the day (when Megatokyo pretended to have regular updates) very busy and civilized.

Speaking of which, I remember when Fred Gallagher of Megatokyo threatened to shut down Megatokyo if people created porn of his characters.  That threat didn't last long.

I suspect QC's forum gets uncivilized because the comic itself is not PG-rated and there's not really any moderation for language in here.  I can only imagine what forums for Something Positive would be like if Randy Milholland let them be created  :psyduck:

Well if he decided to axe it it's not like we couldn't do so elsewhere. ... like the tvtropes forum.

Then again I'm not prone to getting srs bsns about this either. It honestly shocks me how much some people do.

I'm a member of TrekBBS... it's a Star Trek forum.  THE major Star Trek forum.

I go there to discuss the show and movies and keep up on the novels...    I keep it light and poke fun where fun needs to be poked... and I roll my eyes at the GLARING PLOT DEFECTS like most fans do.

Then there are the HARDCORE FANS who disagree with EVERYTHING,  they lump everything they agree with into CANON... and anything that doesn't fit their worldview is NON-CANON.   To these freaks Star Trek their religion... which is ironic because they are all militant atheists... go figure!

WE seem to have a few of those sorts on here.      As Shatner once said to the Star Trek fan-base:  GET A LIFE.      It's a comic strip.    A very well drawn comic that mirrors our shared life experiences... but in the end it's a work of FICTION.   Created by one man who may or may not have an overall story framed out.

I come in here on occasion, and much to my regret I've watched the discussion of this week's story go from bad to worse to OMFG.     On top of that we have someone posting a thread about how Jeph is an alcoholic?!   What... the hell?

Ya'll lucky Jeph doesn't just say "fuck it" and kill the entire strip after the behavior displayed in here.

I'm done ranting.   I'm also logging out for awhile,  don't know if/when I'll be back.

I don't think him stopping the strip is a worry, it's too much a part of who he is, and he does genuinely care about his work.

If he ever got really fed up, I'm pretty sure he'd just close the forums and save himself some monthly bandwidth costs.

Oh, est hates QCD as much as jeph does. I think most of the Infinite Pony Debates part of the forum have fairly similar feelings about this part.

Also, the point of the thread was (as far as I can tell) was that there was no point. You're all bloo blooing about him being rude to you and messing around with your posts in a thread that was pretty stupidly ridiculous in the first place. You are trying to think too much into this. Stop taking things so seriously and try seeing the funny side.

It was a response to our dumbfuckery and rudeness.

Est saw our Zigguraut of 36 pages and smote it, Jeph voiced his approval of Est in the thread.

If I was him, I'd be more pissed off at the misspellings of character names than he is.

Hey, I didn't get it locked- I wasn't trolling nor was I reporting anyone. Not exactly fair to us not involved in that to have the thread locked, is it? I feel for Est, but killing it for everyone because he has to deal with some abuse of the report function is a bit of an overreaction.

I would hazard a guess that Jeph and the moderators received orders of magnitude more E-mails and reports than the 36 pages of posts in the thread, when you consider that each vitriolic post probably prompted dozens of reports each and let's face it; toward the end, there were a *lot* of vitriolic posts.  I share your sentiment of disappointment that the decision to close the thread bars legitimate posters from posting, but I don't remotely blame them for doing so.  You've heard the saying, "One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel."  Well, in this case, it was more like a barrel more than half full of rotten apples and the apples wouldn't shut up.   :-P

I'm usually okay at figuring out roughly what people are doing, but this just mystifies me.

GOOGLE IT!

(Just kidding!  Just kidding!  Don't kill me!)

Seriously, though, that thread is about what I've come to expect of Jeph's sense of humour.  I wouldn't read too much into it, and I definitely wouldn't suggest getting too emotionally invested against it.

... Editing what someone else said because you didn't like it? That's not cool.

Since the WCT thread got closed due, in part, to an overabundance of complaints, it probably did nothing for Jeph's mood that someone was continuing to complain.  I'm not saying who's right or wrong; it's just cause and effect.

If the mods want to fuck around with your posts then you can complain and maybe they might stop it but probably won't. If the person who owns the forum you post on decides to fuck around with your posts you gotta suck it up and deal with it.

If it happened once, it will happen again, and again.

I highly doubt people incapable of of discussing differences in opinion without screaming, "Troll" and smashing the report button until its broken, can learn.

WCT used to have its own forum?  Wow.

I read maybe 4% of the posts in this week's WCT, and yes, I made one post with "go to 40 pages gogo!!1", but that was all in good fun that should be what a discussion forum is for.  Needless to say, I was shocked like a lot of other people at how some behaved in the thread. But I was amazed that people were actually reporting posts (aka tattling) just because someone happened to disagree with their opinion.  I'm sorry, but to put it bluntly, that's fucking childish and pathetic.  How the hell do you function in the real world if you're going to get worked up over someone disagreeing with you?
