--- Quote from: Johnny C on 02 Jan 2011, 09:21 ---wellllllll i'm not sure about that because the cultural context is probably pretty significant? everyone tends to forget that music was segregated, up to a point; in the 1950s there were literally black music stations and white music stations. so black and white people actually coming together to make music is something that, for popular music, was particularly rare, and likely would have combined some radically different musical background. which is part of why love was so impressive.

Obviously it should be remembered that things weren't always as mixed up as they are now, but I think any kind of musician would dislike being deemed significant because of the cultural context he/she made music in. I do see your point though.. Btw just to make sure that I'm being understood correctly: LOVE WAS/IS AWESOME.

KvP:

Camel - Speak Easy EP

Sleek-ish house stuff.

Ill-Esha - Circadian Rhythms

Eskmo-ish hifi bass music. I don't remember why I got it, but it's accessible!

Applescal - Welcome to the Woods

Applescal came out with a fascinating future house / IDM record last year and he starts off this one with EPs both vanilla and remix. This is the vanilla.

Applescal - Welcome to the Woods Remixes

If you couldn't tell, these are the remixes. No names stand out to me.

KXTA - Voltage

Here's a good one... It's easy to lean on the "it sounds like AFX!" button whenever an acid techno record comes out, but this really does sound like AFX in the best ways. Impeccable synthwork Analog IDM at its most beguiling.

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---Tweakin' acidic electro-techno smarts from KXTA. 'Polysylvester' has some proper Analord chops about it, while 'Works In Progress' also features a very canny line in AFXian synth dissonance. Make sure to check 'Bass Chamber for a DMX Krew styled electro-dreamy jaunt and the crafty flutter and strut of 'Progress2!'.

Juanpablo - Dream EP

Acid House  8-) 8-) 8-)

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---Frigio's head honcho invites Chicago's Josh Werner and perennial acid fiend, JTC, on an intrepid electro-acid quest. With help from the shadowy ArD2 aka Penélope his original 'Dream' sounds like a muzzled Ultradyne in a reflective mood, while the sinister EBM-spiked throb and bustle of 'Midas Land' fuses Josh Werner's vox into a detuned cut of gothic acid feat. arrangements from Rolf Martens and Ekis. JTC takes on 'Dream', laying gurgling 303 tweaks and electro-tipped jackers patterns with wickedly off-kilter chords. You know how he does.

Genoc1de - Want You (Rush'd Remix)

I don't know why Boomkat keeps referring to L2S as making "feminine" garage, but whatever. The name is pretty "dodgy", though, I'll give them that.

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---The dodgily monikered Genoc1de gives up his debut release for L2S, backed with a sweetly feminine Rush'd remix. 'Mind' flits with featherweight 2-step and sparse, dainty melodies, while the Rush'd remix of 'Want You' loses itself in a lather of sensual, jazzy chords and swooning subs. Strong EP.

Tom Trago - Use Me Again (Remastered)

Stop #4 on the Voyage Direct train, yet another undeniable House classic. You can practically hear the lineage from miles away - the A-side is Daft Punk pre-robofetish, the B-side is the type of thing that haunts James Murphy's dreams. It's all too awesome.

What about the all girl punk bands? Or anti-violence hardcore, or straight edge. I think being one of the first mixed race bands is not only a huge achievement but worthy of recognition. Obviously it's not the key point but it's a pretty major sidenote.

Beatles Set at Open Mic, Dec. 30, 2010

My best friend and I finally recorded this. I have his permission to post this.

I'll warn you now (and again, we've agreed on this concensus), we start out significantly stronger than we finish.

(sorry about not splitting tracks, it's honestly more effort than it's worth with the equipment I have available, so it's a big ol' 69.3mb mp3)

Worth noting: I sing most of the lead in the first two songs, and I'm playing guitar. Try and guess if you can tell which songs I'm playing bass (hint: it's the ones where the bass is probably not much, and don't have backing vocals). Also, there are two different drummers that appear in the recordings, and a guest vocalist in the final song. I hope you enjoy hearing a bit of what my Thursdays are like!
