Sly & The Revolutionaries - Black Ash Dub

Fronted by 2 of reggae's most venerable sidemen, (drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare) the Revolutionaries were a conglomeration of many of reggae's finest studio musicians, brought together with producers ranging from legends like King Tubby and Prince Jammy, to lesser known ones, to create some of the finest dub of the late 70's.
"Black As Dub" is a wonderful example of the group at its peak. Sly's drumming prowice is at its best on this lp, complete with his famous crash cymbals on the 4th beat in 4/4 time versus the 1st beat. His skills are legendary due in large part to the bass playing of Robbie. His grooves are intense, yet very supple, and perfectly augment Sly's grooves. (Robbie also plays great lead guitar on this lp, as well.)With its 2 major club hits- "Marijuana" and "Cocain(e),", "Black Ash Dub" is a fine example of late 70's dub, and a wonderful addition to any fan of Sly and Robbie. Well worth the investment..

Jeremiah Jae - Rappayamatantra EP

Some fresh blood for the Brainfeeder label, Jeremiah Jae is a Chicago native who somehow manages to blend the cut-and-paste of the LAFMS, the synthetic pulse of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and rare groove of Madlib and emerge with something effortlessly engaging and shockingly coherent. Madlib might just be the best reference, but this is far from an exercise in second-rate ‘Unseen’ pastiches, just flip over to the Delia Derbyshire-esque ‘Stones Passage’ and prepare to have your brain cells frazzled by Jae’s genius-level of control over his unexpected, pulsing rhythms and the kind of bleeping, synthetic textures the Ghost Box set would be dribbling over. Elsewhere ‘$easons’ (which has been floating around the net for a while now) shows off Jae’s wordplay, and while it might be the straightest track on the EP is still undeniably peculiar with Jae swathing his low-key raps with a glorious sludge of noise, choppy rhythms and stuttering vocals. With ‘Rappayamatantra’, Jeremiah Jae has put more ideas into the mix than most artists inject into an entire album, and there’s no reason I can think of for any followers of post-rap, wonky or whatever the media is labeling this stuff right now to grab this without any further delay. Seriously one of the most exciting EPs I’ve heard in ages – a huge recommendation.

Jacques Greene - Another Girl

LuckyMe drop one of the most anticipated dancefloor 12"s of the last 12 months, backed up with remixes of tracks from 'The Look' by Rinse FM's Braiden and UR's Mark Flash. There's no need to bang on about 'Another Girl', it's straight anthem material combining ohrwurming vocal, a a rolling emotional topography and dancing neon melodies in beautiful style. Flip it and Braiden gives a tough rework of 'Holdin' On', full of titanium cowbells, rampant R1 Ryders style bass revs and chopped vocals, but UR's Mark Flash steals the show with a Hi-tek, carnival-killing remix of 'The Look'. Very large 12"!!!

Burial - Street Halo

'Street Halo' is the first solo Burial 12" in four years. It's a peach. A-side 'Street Halo' is a yearning 4/4 roller tucked with all the hallmarks of his finest and usefully cut at 45rpm in case you want some slopped and screwed fun. Flipside, we find the slowdown soul-tugger 'NYC' featuring a more prominent vocal in the style of his songs from 'Untrue', but best of all is 'Stolen Dog', hankering after a twoc'ed mutt through a beautiful, Roedelius-like lead refrain, barely-there rhythms and swarming spectral shapes. Worth the wait? Indeed.

Coki - Boomba / Carbon Aliens

What the f**k has Coki been smokin'? His latest platter for Tempa is by far his weirdest to date. Featuring an ecstatic ass on the centre label, 'Boomba' sounds like chamber music for hydro-toking bass aliens, with warped, harpsichord-like melody and irregular, obtuse bass quakes crumbling the walls of halfstep to leave behind a surreal and abstract rhythmic framework. Flipside, 'Carbon Aliens' staggers on a drunken-master halfstep style, knees buckling under successive subbass onslaughts and head reeling from psychotomimetic synths sounding like the garbled rantings of a dubstep lifeform sent to earth to p*ss off the keepers of "good taste". Wickedly done!

Panda Bear / Actress - Surfer's Hymn (Actress Mix)

Following a flurry of 7" activity in 2010, Panda Bear prepares for his full length with sterling remix support from Actress. Prostrated on the beach, waves crashing in the background, 'Surfers Hymn' is a delirious pop ritual revolving around cascading, rainbow-coloured melodies struck on some kind of treated marimba or xylophone and refracted against the sand's heat haze shimmer into glorious harmonies, crucial points accentuated with the sound of overheard planes and squawking gulls. Dazed and washed up after a day in the waves, Actress' 'Primitive Patterns' remix views the original though clogged ears, the tinkling, melodic polyrhythms sounding like they're played back through a conch shell while the percussive grooves are corroded to a sand-stomping tribal jack reminding of Ra.H's 'Time' 12" for Morphosis. This is one irresistible bit of wax - strictly limited and Highly recommended

Not a huge fan of Panda Bear, but this remix is amazing!

Okkervil River - I Am Very Far

I Am Very Far represents the sixth album from Will Sheff's Okkervil River, which released its previous album, The Stand Ins, in 2008 to a warm reception from critics and fans. It stood as the band's highest charting record thus far as it reached number 42 on the Billboard 200. But Sheff opted to take some time off from recording with the band as he looked to produce, such as Roky Erickson's True Love Cast Out All Evil in 2010. That same year Sheff appeared on the New Pornographers' Together, which made plenty of sense considering he and A.C. Newman delivered a killer take of The Stand Ins highlight “Lost Coastlines” in a YouTube series. Their friendship didn't end there, though, as Newman appears as one of many guests on Okkervil River's I Am Very Far. The album also features the Austin band expanding its sound even more, as it includes string and horn sections along with choral arrangements. The goal for Sheff, he has said, was to push his brain to places it didn't want to go while recording the album.

Ryoji Ikeda and Carsten Nicolai first premiered their collaborative Cyclo project a deacde ago on Raster Noton. Relaunching in 2011 they're just as intent on creating a synaesthetic visualization of sound that "...seeks to create a new hybrid of visual art and music". Essentially the sounds on 'Id' are inextricable from their visual corollary. They're the unmastered sonic illustrations of detailed graphical data, and vice versa, developed from a database of sounds composed to produce visual responses when analysed in real time with the help of stereo image monitoring equipment. Most importantly, the sounds are subservient to the image, hence the record remains purposefully unmastered in order to retain the waveform's original integrity when visualized through an XY phase scope, transcending the usual sound>image dynamic. But that's not to say that the music doesn't possess its own heightened, strangely affecting quality - within 30 seconds of listening through headphones this reviewer's eyes were watering, a physically visceral effect if we've ever felt one. A man-sized Kleenex later and we discover that, unlike its relatively austere predecessor, the sounds within cover a wider spectrum of rhythms, from spasmodic digital pulses to lightyears-advanced electro syncopation, and similarly a dazzling frequency range capable of causing acutely synaesthetic reactions. All this leads us to think that 'Id' is a work of uncompromising genius, at once cementing and advancing Ikeda and Nicolai's relentlessly ongoing audio/visual quest.

Kode 9 & The Spaceape - Otherman / Love Is The Drug (Feat Cha Cha)

Hyperdub's head honcho serves a first taster of his forthcoming 'Black Sun' LP with two mystikal entries featuring Space Ape and Cha Cha. Furthering his new, up-stepping sound from the '09 single 'Black Sun', A-side 'Otherman' sails in on signature, wheezing melodica surrounded by melting synth drones before Tech-stepped swing drums and cone-imploding subs suck the air from the room, perhaps explaining Spaceape's breathless, distanced vocal. Flipside, 'Love Is The Drug' introduces Cha Cha, an MC/Singer from Guizhou, China and in possession of a superbly sultry, spectral delivery, over a sleeker, heavy rolling riddim matched with melancholy synthlines twisted into mournful cadences. It's standardly moody Kode 9 business and a class tease for the album (which is absolutely ace, as it goes). Really into this - highly recommended.

Kode 9 & The Spaceape - Konfusion

The original hyperdub duo make their presence felt in 2008 with a return to the melancholy off-kilter steppers style they came to define some 4 years back with that awesome run of tracks from 'sign of the dub' to 'backward'. 'Konfusion' is notable for the reappearance of in-house MC Spaceape, returning to curl his ghostly drawl around 9's darkside dubbers riddim in fine style. The track itself makes no effort to challenge any of the big rave hitters currently dominating the scene, and is so so so much better for it - instead relying on Mr 9's knack for moody blue bomb squad style dissonance in that archetypal Hyperdub style, minimal steppers meditations that hold a very special place in our collective memory. Spaceape has come under criticism in recent times, but mostly from heads that think a dubstep MC should be a lively fella with a big bag of catchphrases, but thankfully he sticks to his guns and provides the perfect layer of sliced banana to Kode's peanut-butter-on-toast riddim, proper chewy styles. Best Hyperdub in a while - and another absolute killer.

Julio Bashmore - Batty Knee Dance EP

Julio Bashmore - Um Bongo's Revenge / World Peace

Anthem alert! After doing the rounds on dubplate and CDr between those in the know, 'Um Bongo's Revenge' from the hotly tipped Julio Bashmore makes a debut appearance on Claude VonStroke's Dirty Bird imprint. Coming at the end of 2009, this anthemic title track is purely indicative of the blurred boundaries and tropically heated fusions happening in UK dance music (Bashmore is based in London), and spreading bird-flu-like across the world (to labels like San Fran's Dirty Bird). On 'Um Bongo..' Tabla drums fuse with batty-slapping UK subs and ghetto siren calls with a sophisticated Berlin-style finish to ensures it ellicits the same reaction from Ibiza to Inverness, no messing. Basically every DJ and their dog is playing it, and with good reason. On the flip, 'World Peace' shows a more sublime side to the young producer, perhaps coming off like Joy Orbison if he made fresh tech-house or Geeneus if he went the whole way and decamped to Berlin. And like that fateful Joy Orbison 12", both tracks are built with an innocent freshness and vitality that will ensure their inclusion on playlists for time to come. Ace.

Machinefabriek - Apollo + Bonus

Engrossing 22 minute missive from Machinefabriek: an alternative edit of the soundtrack for Makino Takashi's film 'In Your Star', recorded by Rutger Zuydervelt, December 2010 and January 2011. We're completely and utterly pinned to our seats with this one - and not even metaphorically - as soon as the wave of subbass creeps in and takes a hold at the start of 'Apollo' this becomes an intensely visceral, physical experience when heard through headphones. Seriously, my vision just went blurry and I got a cold sweat! Anyway, after lift-off the intensity subsides and Rutger settles into his trajectory, making microtonal adjustments to arcing, glassy tones and disturbing the surface with build ups of crystalline digital grains fogging the display until we're pretty much lost out there in the inky blackness. Includes a digital-only bonus track recorded live in Tokyo.
