Deadboy - Here

Quote from: boomkat
Heart-poundingly potent discoid garage infusions from the one like Deadboy! It's kinda hard to believe, considering his impact on the scene, but this is only Deadboy's second official solo release, besides his bagful of remixes for the likes of Creep, Andy Bell and Delphic. His sound pretty much defined the last 12 months, hitting a stride of sensually Housed-up Garage which owes as much to Miami as South London, and pretty much correlates with the upturn in MDMA quality over the same period. The eye-fluttering synth alleviations of 'Wish U Were Here' are perfectly paced and programmed for the lushest '95-'11 buzz, while 'Here 4 U' gives more drums and hypnotic repetitions for the swingers and 'Ain't Gonna Lie' takes the mood more intimate and slinky hipped. That lead track is gonna be the soundtrack to this summer, we reckon. Highly recommended!

Lando Kal - Further/Time Out

Quote from: boomkat
Lando Kal, best known as half of Lazer Sword, steps forth with a cyber-fresh solo debut. Face-first, 'Further' tucks into HD hyper-step mode, swinging on an original US Garage rhythm buffed with silicon-fine finish and robo-dextrous edits for cutting-edge appeal. Turn it over and 'Time Out' embarks on some more discombobulated business, synching the groove between flickering, Juke-like drum timbres and full-sunken, batty-swiping subs before an aquatic 4/4 resolution and back to the twysted roll-out. Most notably, he's put his own uniquely cyber-spacious and tricky spin on a well tried style, and in the end sounds like himself. Ace.

Roska - Error Code

Quote from: boomkat
Roska returns to Hot Flush with two crucial technoid Funky evolutions. 'Error Code' is his solo outing since last years eponymous album and features a marked diversion into more electroid, night-shiny productions. That title track is built with his trademark clipped drums and dippin' subs, but this time they're foreshadowed against gleaming electro synthlines and elegantly ascending pads. Sticking with the steely futurist vibe, the dapper minimalism of 'Abrupt' works with skeletal drums powered by toned and muscular subs while droning synths hover and scout the perimeters. We'll be playing this one for a while - big big EP.

Alright motherfuckers, I'm posting here like how posts back in the day used to rule, before this thread sucked. Now why am i doing this? Well...

Algernon Cadwallader - Parrot Flies

That's motherfucking right, theres a goddamn new Algernon Cadwallader album. This is the only album you need this summer. Laying around in a park smokin dope? Going to the beach? Getting shitfaced at the pool hoping nobody kicks you out? Grilling goddamn burgers like a dude? Then spin the fuck out of this. This sounds a bunch like Some Kind of Cadwallader, which came out 3 years ago, but 10 million times radder. Algernon's style has evolved really goddamn nicely. This is the best goddamn thing they've done. In fact, this is one of the best goddamn emo albums I have heard, straight up ever. This is better than Goes Canoeing, the new Monument, and I goddamn love Monument. Super rad, super twinkly jams on this shit. Get into it and if you don't, you legitimately suck as a human being. This album is better than you.

Wow I like Algernon but that post was a bit much, brah.

So, Parenthetical Girls have been releasing their new album in the form of four EPs under the title Privilege.  I liked the concept and had been into the band for a while and just went to their wiki page for the fuck of it... I discovered they released an album in 2007, Entanglements, that I had not heard a single mention of in all of my time looking at music blogs and threads such as this.
I got my hands on it and it may be one of my favorite new albums I've heard in forever.  It's different in the same way I thought Beirut's Gulag Orkestar was completely unique, out of left field, and incredible.

I found Entanglements at a perfect time, as I'm in the same place I was when I first heard Gulag Orkestar... pretty bored with almost every band that uses one or two guitars, a bass, and a drum kit.  This album has maybe one guitar part in the entire thing, and a drum kit on I think one song... the rest is brilliantly composed orchestral pop... like, pretty much sounds exactly like Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle, but more pop and modern (obviously more modern but you know).

Probably my favorite album discovery so far this year, with a very small chance of being topped.

Thanks to a more consistent thematic flow, Attention Please is notably stronger than its simultaneously released sister album, Heavy Rocks, and should have an extra appeal to fans of Boris’s breakout metal albums, Pink and Smile, and to those who are interested in hearing a strikingly different side of the band.

I lurk a bit too much. Figured someone on here would enjoy this stuff. Isaac from Pomegranates introduced me to these guys two years ago, which is ironic because he's from Cincinatti and I live thirty minutes away from Denton. You don't have to believe in Jesus to enjoy this shit.

Lift To Experience - The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads (2001)

Code: [Select]
http://www.MF.com/?hiphb2rsqhe3rot

Quote
How's this for a concept album: three musicians from Denton, TX, with the help of former Cocteau Twins Robin Guthrie and Simon Raymonde, blend My Bloody Valentine's sonic feedback with Kitchens of Distinction's swirling atmosphere and the grace of Jeff Buckley to detail the "crossroads of Texas and Jerusalem." What could have been a tiresome exploration of awkward religious theories is instead a spellbinding journey into the heart of human emotion and guitar dynamics. Josh T. Pearson's beautifully controlled croon works dark magic over arrangements that suggest and depict both the whisper of birth and the fury of Armageddon. When the band kicks things into gear, they take off into bold, thrilling musical vistas without a single fear that they'll be misinterpreted or mocked.

Ten Years and an alcohol addiction later...

Josh T. Pearson - Last of the Country Gentlemen (2011)

Code: [Select]
http://www.MF.com/?cb5ih2q1j8q0gi4

Quote
There is absolutely nothing artificial about Last of the Country Gentlemen; nothing false. It is unflinchingly honest, sharp and unfiltered. And precisely because of this, the album’s emotional gut-punch is all the more painful and disarming to endure. Like listening to Elliot Smith, Ian Curtis or Hank Williams, you are acutely and uncomfortably aware that he means every single word: a nagging sense of guilt, even voyeurism comes upon you for eavesdropping on such personal grief. But the true beauty of the record is defined by its intimacy. And its appeal will be measured in how so many people will hear this album and recall their own tales of bitterness and lost love: each ragged string raking across your scarred memories, each lyric exploring the hieroglyphics scratched into the wrinkles around your eyes. In shedding his layers of pain, Pearson reveals his heart: broken and bloodied, but still beating, still fighting. We share and revere in his redemption, rarely has something so physically fragile sounded so mighty in its emotional resonance. A truly magnificent record.

I ripped these off of soundcloud, so it's certainly not quality, but it's certainly listenable.

Sacred Spirits - Some Stay (2011)

Code: [Select]
http://www.therecordinglabel.com/music/SomeStayMP3.zip

Quote
The album formerly known as Just Don't Kill Yourself is a rambling, lonely but heartfelt effort; the debut of Sacred Spirits. The title change is crucial. Would the original been chosen, the message of Some Stay might have been dramatically different. Not to say that there is one message but this last-second alteration shifted the album from a moralistic tale where the singer's voice on each song is a pleading against a loved one's suicide to an answerless monologue free of admonition, concerned with ephemerality.

This is actually the project of an old Pomegranates guitarist, Josh Kufeldt. The album was released as a free download through The Recording Label and it's pretty enjoyable.

That Lift to Experience is UNASSAILABLE and has been in heavy rotation around the house for the entire time it's been out.  I didn't know he finally made a new album, downloading now and super psyched.

(the back of the CD case for Lift To Experience says "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Playing With One Guitar", just throwing that out there as a great reference tagline.)

edit: Last of the Country Gentlemen is a fucking masterpiece and is basically perfect for anyone who wishes Mark Kozelek had stayed Red House Painters instead of going Sun Kil Moon on us.  godDAMN.

Blawan - Getting Me Down

Quote
Big tunes. They're a tricky thing, particularly in the bass music world where time passes at hyperspeed. Floating around Hessle-related sets since January of this year, Blawan's "Getting Me Down" is one of those catchy, instantly indelible tracks; you hear it once and that's enough to fall under its spell. Even though it's only now getting a release (on a single-sided white label, naturally), it's bigger than ever, the kind of track that sets a room on fire, especially now that everyone and their brother has had a chance to hear it at least once.

"Getting Me Down" is a sugary rush of melody and headstrong momentum, but it's got the tight construction to back it up. While the track features Blawan's usual grab-bag of percussive sounds, here he's nailed down to a simpler house template, more restrained than the explosive workouts on his previous Hessle or R&S singles. It's a good look for him, as the resulting squirming he does in his reduced position means there's a hell of a grooving bassline underneath, writhing and grinding and practically forcing dancers' feet off the floor.

But let's be real here: half of the endless pleasure of "Getting Me Down" comes from its rather prominent and elaborate vocal sample. It's a familiar one to be sure, but the way Blawan sews it into his unusual structure makes this even more impressive. Especially once you know what's coming, the first minute of harsh growling LFO and dainty percussion makes the anticipation for the drop almost unbearable. And when the vocal comes in, it's all over: the song's heroine is swept away by Blawan's percussive tsunami, her warbly voice struggling to keep up with the crashing waves and reaching oddly gospel proportions as it's strangled on the track's "chorus." Quite simply, it's one of the most universal, ubiquitous and joyful bass music tracks of recent times.

Linkwood - From The Vaults Part 1

Quote
Following his widely acclaimed debut album and remixes for Appleblim and Tornado Wallace, Edinburgh's Linkwood plucks three idiosyncratic analogue House grooves for Trus'me's Prime Numbers. Face up you'll find the disco-pumped 'Dirty Love' workout full of sprightly keys and proper shifting rhythms that Pepe Braddock would be proud of. Flipside it's a luxuriously deep affair, with beautifully moody, woozy Detroit chords and sub-clad kicks on 'Untitled 1' and the masterful mid-tempo pace of 'Untitled 2' with its cascade of ethereal, dubbed-out organ and deep, grumbling bass played to brilliantly trippy effect. Highest quality goods. Can't wait to hear the next one!

Lory D - Strange Days Vol. 1

Quote
The original Italian Techno badboy presents the first in a series of hugely promising releases for NMBRS. Unless you've been asleep for the last two decades, you should know by now that Lory D has one of the most distinctive styles in Techno, or electronic music at large. These two are up there with owt he's released on Rephlex or his own Sounds Never Seen label. 'Acidronix' is a relatively brief dose of marbled acid jack, applying that uniquely sheer electro resonance to an eternally tweaking, snakey-sleazin' TechnoHouse special. 'Acid Prastix' is where he really gives the full brunt of his sound, teasing it in with the squelchiest, splashiest synths before expertly layered drum machine rolls pin you to the spot like his voodoo marionette. It's a dizzying experience which should really be reserved for peak-time gratification.

good stuff.  wish i'd listened to it before reading the review though, because you seem to imply it's not "ye olde post-rock" when that's exactly what it is.  they even sample the same new-age preacher that GY!BE did.  most of it sounds like MONO to me.

Spoken word sample's not a preacher, if you listen to what he's saying it sounds more like a scientist giving a seminar on the physiological reasons behind Near Death Experiences (seeing light, tunnels, etc.) and how it's caused by lack of oxygen to the brain.

At least once a year, p4k gives a HORRIBLE review to an album that I love, and this is 2011's.

I'm not biasing it because I'm a huge Boris fan, I'm biasing it because holy crap the guitar tones are good.

p4k reviews are best read in the voice of Jerry Seinfeld.  anytime they review a post-rock album or a new-psyche album (Darker My Love, the Warlocks, Black Angels, that stuff) they just come as "what's the deal with this stuff?  people like this?"

good stuff.  wish i'd listened to it before reading the review though, because you seem to imply it's not "ye olde post-rock" when that's exactly what it is.  they even sample the same new-age preacher that GY!BE did.  most of it sounds like MONO to me.

It's post-rock but it's different from any post-rock I've heard before.  At the very least it's a massive stylistic change from their first record.

if you want to hear "post-rock that doesn't sound like post-rock" i would direct you to the band Disco Inferno and the Tarentel album "We Move Through Weather".  now THOSE truly sound nothing like typical post-rock (though granted Tarentel started out as a Mogwai-alike).

actually gimme a little while and i'll upload that Tarentel.

Tarentel - We Move Through Weather

You think post-rock all sounds the same?  Ha ha.  Have fun with that.

In response to my old stuff on the blog being gone: I sort of felt like it was the right time to make a fresh start of things, being that I'd been gone for over a year. I've got word files of all the old reviews, but my writing has changed and matured a bit over the year and I'd like to just continue on from where I am now.

ALSO: Post-Rock in the Bark Psychosis/Talk Talk/Tarentel/Tortoise vein is closer to what the original definition of post-rock was (rock instruments for non-rock music). It's awesome for breaking up the monotony of GIAA and its ilk. In regards to Tunnel Blanket, I don't think it necessarily re-invented the wheel, but it did delve into some serious textural/structural explorations closer to a drone doom record than most post-rock dares. It's especially significant considering they went from excellent-but-fairly-run-of-the-mill to something much more dark and expansive. The fact that there is/was a decent outcry against it on sites like last.fm (OMG WERE R THA PRETTY PARTS DIS IS BORIN/SCARY) sorta goes to show how incestuous post-rock in that vein has gotten, and how important it is to have records like Tunnel Blanket that push at the edges a bit. I'd be hard pressed to name another post-rock record similar to it. The closest comparison I can think of is like a doomy version of Sigur Ros's ( ).

i agree that the new TWDY is more "droney", but i still can't shake the feeling that MONO has been doing that for years.  i really like it, but it's not as exciting to me as like the Efrim Menuck solo album or whatever.

the thing about Tarentel is that in the late 90s/2000 they really did sound just like GY!BE or Mogwai, and then years later made a decision to sound almost industrial and raw; i don't think they were aping Disco Inferno, i think they were listening to a lot of Einstuzende Neubauten's old records.  i think We Move Through Weather is so important because circa 2004 nobody outside the industrial scene was daring to sound anything like that.  and it's amazing.

i had no idea TWDY had an "outcry" against them, that's just fucking ridiculous on all counts.  right now i still prefer the s/t album, but raging against the new one is just retarded.

Ampere - Like Shadows

I feel Ampere is band that you either are in love with, or you completely hate. Certainly, a certain taste is needed to appreciate their ferocious brand of hardcore. Personally, I absolutely love Ampere. Their new album, Like Shadows, certainly isn't going to change yr opinion if you think their abrasive music is too disorganized, or even just too overwhelming. But if you dig it, this album goddamn delivers. Since their last release in 2008 (i think?) they haven't changed much, but they haven't lost their touch at all. On Like Shadows, Ampere is just as charged and passionate as they have been in the past, if not more so.

oh headsup tho, that copy isn't gapless, so there's a pause in between each track, which kinda sucks. whatever tho, new ampere, worth it.

Rules:

The first rule of this thread is you do not mention MF.  I am doing this because we are currently the first hit for the full version of "MF thread" on Google, so y'know, that's bad n' shit.

No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at http://imageshack.us.

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to MF, in multiple parts if the album is over 200mb. The reason for this is that we know MF is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Also, please do NOT request albums. This includes requests for re-uploads; if you miss it, try looking for it somewhere else.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page

Kangding Ray - OR [raster-noton; 2011]

Quote from: Boomkat
Kanding Ray's 2008 LP Automne Fold is one of the stand-out Raster-Noton releases of recent years; within it, David Letellier managed to impose a unique pop sensibility and structure upon the kind of disciplined, fanatically detailed brand of computer music that's relatively common to his label brethren. For OR, his third LP to date, the producer offers a similarly focussed, bass-fuelled attack in a bid to depict "the disillusions of modern civilizations"; the title is a reference to the English word indicating the possibility of another choice, and to the French word for gold, a substance which has retained its value over many thousands of years - both ideas pertinent to Kangding Ray's critique of a global economy and culture gone awry. Ben Frost plays keyboards, Rose Tizane Merrilland lends her voice to 'Monsters', and Magne Mostue to 'Coracoid Process' and a vocal edit of last year's single 'Pruitt Igoe'. Highlights come in the shape of jackhammering industrial stepper 'Athem' and 'Leavaila Scheme', the only R-N track we can think of that so prominently features guitar (albeit heavily distorted). It's another fierce and singular statement from Kangding Ray, surely one of the most interesting electronic artists operating today, and as recommended to fans of sub-heay techno/dubstep from Sandwell District, Anstam, T++ and Andy Stott as it is to R-N regulars.

Junkie Blood - Wish You Were Beer demo EP

Based in Berkeley, just a bunch of crossfaded Cal students making exceptional punk rock. You will not understand more than half the lyrics, I'm sure of that. My favorites are "Charred Corpses," "Die Pigs Die," and "Beer Today." I feel obligated to link to this and give them more exposure since they are friends of mine. I was also the engineer and assistant producer. If you have any feedback you'd like to give to the band or to me, PM it up! I'll pass anything about the band along to them.

City and Colour - Little Hell (2011)

Solid release from Mr. Dallas Green. From the 'lone man and his guitar' tracks to some Black Keys-ish jams, Little Hell is a step up for City and Colour. Reverbs galore on the guitars and vocals and his smoothe voice and vocal layering never dissappoints.

Great Blood Brothers post; all that stuff is so good.  Also, excited for the new City & Colour even if the only song I know by them is The Girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVHk4dc7yaE).

I was JUST about to put that album up!  It's excellent.  I'm going out on a limb and saying it's just as good (if not possibly better) than Bring Me Your Love.  (though I've only listened to the new one 5-6 times compared to somewhere in the 40's for the other one according to iTunes).  If any of you get the chance, definitely see them live.  Excellent showmanship, will dressed, funny, and they just sound great live.

Anyway, here's the new Eddie Vedder album, Ukelele Songs.  I only listened to it once (and in the background as I did some gardening) but it sounded decent.  I didn't like it as much as his soundtrack for Into the Wild.

Two friends of mine released an EP on bandcamp for free.  They're a noise-rockish bass/drum combo.

As a long time lurker of this thread (I posted some things 2-3 years ago, not totally an asshole) I always wondered where people got their music from to post on here. I had my own blogs id check every once in awhile, but Ive been out of the game for some time now and they are all dead and gone. I was wondering if anyone here knows any good blogs to keep up with? Im down to Here, GvB, TinyMixTapes (which i havent cared for since they downplayed the mixtape making alot), and a handfull of other saved ones that just arent what im trying to listen to. Basically shit.

I cant imagine that im the only person looking for more sources of music. If people could just post some places and what kind of music they generally push it would be awesome.

I know this is lazy and I should look for it myself, but my internet skills have been dying slowly for years.

If anyone helps, THANKS.

And thanks, to everyone, for the one thing that remained fairly constant through my college career. Even all that shitty metal that got posted here two years ago.
