There's nothing new in that.

Cluedo was made into a film once

Tomb Raider

Should be interesting to see how they go though.

It should be fine as long as they remember to grind emotional authenticity and character development

Or just go all out on fanservice and then anyone was going to see it will be happy and everyone who wasn't going to will be happy too because they told you so.

just scrapping around in imdb and found that mass effect the movie is in development, a HALO movie slated for 2012, and the old school board game battleship.
Halo was in development a while back. Apparently there was a lack of finances or something and they made District 9 instead.

Wow. Thank god for that. I mean, a Halo movie could be pretty good, if they pull it off, but I loved District 9. Does anyone know if it's getting a sequel? The cliffhanger ending sort of demanded one.

It was going to get made, but the financiers didn't have confidence in Neil Blokamp, who had only made commercials (including some impressive Halo commercials) at that point.

So many allusions and similarities to Halo in that film, it was almost like watching a movie that was half Halo, half Earth.

I think all the promotional Halo 3/ODST stuff was really well done and you can see how it would translate to a movie, but the general consensus is that games make terrible movies because you can't please all the fans but for some reason they are always worse than expected. I mean at least in Tomb Raider there was a lot of side boob, latex boob, bouncing boob, to focus on when you felt the story slowed down.

It'll be interesting  to see what games get turned into movies once obscure and famous comic book characters have been worked and reworked to death. Probably something like OutRun or Golden Axe. Sega will rise only to fall again.

Weren't those commercials originally the sales pitches for the movie?

Considering Hollywood bought the rights to make an Asteroids movie....I think they're already scraping the bottom of the barrel.  They also have Monopoly and a few others.

The Bioshock movie is in continual limbo because Verbinski won't make it without an R rating and a higher budget.  Which is nice, the longer they don't make a Bioshock film the happier I am.

I'm interested to see if video game films become as widespread as films based off of comic books.  Considering how saturated the market is with superhero films I'm curious to see when they stop performing consistently.

That's actually quite difficult to say, although I'm sure some movie games have gotten better reception than game movies, and vice versa.

But generally speaking and by looking at the statistics, most movie games are (considered) crap.

Yeah, but those are generally the exceptions, if only because they're made years after the movie they're based on, so they don't have to rush the game out to match a release date, which is the problem with most movie games.  There are other exceptions probably, but the only one I can think of came out in 2004. The Scott Pilgrim game was awesome.  I much preferred it over the film.

Battle: Los Angeles had a game that lasted around 40 minutes.  Probably the worst movie-game in recent memory.
Iron Man's games have also been horrendous.

That's the funny thing.  The one good recent tie-in game was a download and was what, $15?  While the hour-long shitty ones somehow try to sell for $60.  I didn't want to spend $10 to watch Battle: LA, why would I spend $60 to play it?

What's worse, though?  A movie made from a game or a game made from a movie?

Most games based on a movie have a limited shelf life of appeal - either because the knowledge of the movie / TV show has been lost or the game was rushed into production to meet the demands of the marketing department.

Ah, sorry, Battle: Los Angeles was also a downloadable title and I believe is 10-15 bucks.  Either way, you're paying for an experience that is way worse than the movie while also being quite a bit shorter.

The Scott Pilgrim game has an incredible amount of love that has been clearly put into it.  Also, it's way more influenced by the graphic novels but they made it because of the movie.  I'm not sure if I'd really call it a movie tie-in because of how different it is.

The WoW movie is going to be terrible.  I'm calling it now.
It's probably a good thing High Overlord Saurfang hasn't found out about the movie yet.  But once he does, he and Darius Crowley will obliterate Hollywood in a storm of cleaves; Saurfang with his ax and Crowley with his bare fists.

I think I'd pay to see THAT, rather than a WoW movie.

The only good WoW movie is a WoW parody. Which should star Leeroy Jenkins. If it made fun of all the ridiculous things about that game with all the silly pop culture references (and cameos of people characters are based off of, like Harrison Jones and Harris Pilton), it could have potential. But a serious version would be kind of dumb.

The main character should be a Night Elf Mohawk.
