The King's Speech
« on: 11 Jan 2011, 01:36 »

See it.  Quite, quite brilliant, especially Colin Firth (of course).  I didn't much care for Helena Bonham Carter, but that's no big deal as she was not less than good.

I actually thought her performance was terrific - but maybe that's just because I can remember the Queen Mum and so the fact that Bonham-Carter made her into a likeable and even kind of cool character seemed to me to be an impressive feat. As for the film itself, I thought it was fairly standard triumph-over-the-odds fare, but certainly at the upper echelon of that particular sub-genre. Colin Firth is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors, perhaps because I welcome seeing a bit of English reserve when we're subjected to so much American emoting in cinema these days.

But Paul, no mention of Geoffrey Rush? Tsk!

Oh, he was excellent as well - as was Michael Gambon for his brief appearance.  But I didn't want to end up simply listing out the cast!

I enjoyed seeing Michael Gambon in the sort of role he is suited to - he has this strange undercurrent of anger and frustration in everything I've seen him in, and for once that was really right for the character. Also loved seeing Colin Firth take his old, stereotypical role of repressed, verbally stumbling Brit to its natural conclusion.

This sounds like an interesting movie to see, but I've kind of concerned that I will fall asleep by the slow progression. Can anyone confirm or deny this for me?

I thought there were enough moments to keep the pace going nicely. I honestly wasn't bored at all. It's really quite a good movie. I especially enjoyed the banter between Rush and Firth.

Re: former speech therapists
Rush: They're all idiots.
Firth: They've all been knighted.
Rush: Well that just makes it official then.

The relationships between the characters were really good and it's a good depiction of the progression of speech pathology. (My mom works in a speech/audiology graduate program, so I've heard all about this stuff since I was a kid, so that was interesting to me.)

I am hoping to see this soon but it doesn't come out in France until February 2nd which was disappointing (but perhaps I'll go for my birthday!). The trouble will be finding a cinema which is showing it in english. I'll be interested to see how they present the speech impediment in the french subtitles - will they translate literally, or translate paying regard to how a french speaker would stutter over the sentence?

I think the performances were pretty fucking excellent all around, but in terms of plot it was pretty by-the-numbers Oscar bait and the conflicts felt forced at times.

Firth / Rush / Carter are great, though. It's a feel-good movie for feel-good people.

I'm embarassed to say that the first time I saw him was in his first Harry Potter movie - after associating him with Dumbledore, it was a bit of a jolt to see him as such a thorough asshole in Gosford Park.

I just finally saw The King's speech, and I liked it, mostly for the performances. Not much to add that hasn't been said here already, but something not related to the movie itself struck me funny.  Usually trailers are targeted to the same audience that the feature is, but one of the trailers before TKS was for Transformers: Dark of the Moon.  Most of the mostly older crowd in the theater was, like, "Wha?"  Maybe you had to be there  :psyduck:

*EDIT*  Not making age-based generalizations about movie tastes, just an observation of that particular audience on that particular night.

*EDIT* Repressed, verbally stumbling Brit?  I thought that was Hugh Grant

I've just enjoyed watching a Channel 4 documentary, broadcast a few days ago, about Lionel Logue, with commentary from a number of his other patients (including Nicholas Mosley), and film of George VI speaking on various occasions.  Of particular interest was one moderately well-known film clip of which they then showed the original before the stutter was largely edited out.  The whole program was interesting, though not revelatory.

I didn't much care for Helena Bonham Carter, but that's no big deal as she was not less than good.

Having seen her no less than 27 times last night..she always has the same look on her face: confused, and at the same time, a little bit offended.

The manager of the Los Angeles Angels has the same expression. The technical term may as well be "Mike Scoscia face".

Ha! You should see him in 'The Singing Detective' or even better 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover'.

Really?  Are most foreign filmed dubbed rather than subbed over there?  That's a damn shame, it is.  As for the movie itself, I loved it, but it beating The Social Network was a damn shame, regarding both best director and picture.  Although I wouldn't have minded if Geoffrey Rush had beat Christian Bale (but both were excellent, and I'm glad one of them one).

I'd only been in the country for a week at that point - I am now older and wiser and aware that not only are films shown in English and subbed, they are also retitled (still in English though) to be more appealling to the French audience.

Therefore we have "No Strings Attached", which French viewers would call "Sex Friends". We have "Made in Dagenham", or as the French like to say, "We Want Sex Equality". It is rather bizarre.
