First come first served!

pwhodges:
I took time out for a rewatch of Haruhi Suzumiya, including the film.  It's as good as I thought last time.  I find the conclusion of the film satisfying, and am not one of those who feel that the series has suffered by there not being another season.

But now I am moving on to Bakemonogatari.  The first episode left me very confused - how much of the flashed up text should I be trying to read?  Should I pause and go back to it?  But in the second episode (which is as far as I've got), things started to fall into place.  None the less, it requires the brain to be at its most agile - it's not something to be watched when over-tired.  The graphics and the music are both giving me pleasure in their own right.

I'm a bit bemused about comments regarding fan service (I know these relate more to Nisemonogatari, which I haven't reached yet); so far, anything that could be labelled that is directly part of the story being told, or the illustration of the thoughts of the characters, and so is not what I would call fan service anyway.  What makes fan service, in my understanding, is that it is aimed at the viewer without being a necessary or relevant part of the story-telling.  If the story is being told using images that make people in some cultures uncomfortable, that is not the same thing.

GarandMarine:
To my knowledge Bakemonogatari was almost fan serviceless. It has some complex relationships, a lot of levels of metaphor and interaction, but not much fan service. The lead pair are awesome and I honestly feel the anime suffers a bit when it drifts from them.

Asterus:
To be fair, a lot of other series do much more for little to no reason (*coughHotDcough*), and the series is at least self-aware enough to occasionally lampshade it (In the first episode of Nise-, the main character even references his interaction with Hachikuji as "Sexual-harassment"). There are some scenes that are rather excessive (Not really a spoiler, but [Toothbrushes]), but for the most part, there's something to look for in the action (Why a certain kiss happens, that thing with Senjougahara showing how little she really cares about modesty, Suruga in general...), so it works for me. Except maybe that one bathtub conversation in Nise-, that was kinda weird.

I think this is the general approach you should take to the show.  A lot of the text flashing on the screen are thoughts of Araragi and information taken directly from the novels.  There's also a lot of flashback stuff that might leave you confused but all will be revealed eventually.  We're still getting teased by shots of Kizumonogatari that hasn't been aired yet.
