--- Quote from: joepa on 17 Jan 2011, 10:01 ---First off: to those of you who are saying that Jeph has no intention of getting Marten and Faye into a relationship, I think you're right (at least for the foreseeable future of the comic). That being said, the romantic tension between the two has been a defining theme of these characters--and even of the comic itself--since the very beginning. I don't think it will be going away any time soon.

It seems to me that Jeph is deliberately putting distance between Faye and Marten, not just as a potential couple, but also in their friendship. I wouldn't be surprised if the romantic tension not only stopped dead as a direct result of this, but if in the long term Faye even moved in with Angus. That of course would have nothing to do with today's events, but it would have the effect of making her far less close with Marten.
--- Quote ---Martin's lunging for some T&A at the end of the strip may have been a product of an alcohol-enhanced libido, but his lament about breaking through Faye's defenses, only to see her end up with other guys, seemed to be heartfelt.

I can't be that sure, myself. Having just gone through a breakup, he was no doubt feeling bitter about relationships in general...
--- Quote from: TheEvilDog on 17 Jan 2011, 10:03 ---And Biscuit, even with true friends, there are certain things you never joke about with them.

I'll accept that freely, and agree with it. I can't see that this should be one of 'em though. It's a standard wisecrack, too cliché to be either especially funny or offensive. I don't even accept that Faye is offended by it. For all we know the moment could have lasted an incredibly short time, and she could have been more bothered by Marten agreeing with his mom than with the vulgarity.
themacnut:
Of course Faye's bothered by Marten agreeing with his mom. But she's also always had something of a stick up her butt about casual sex and sex-related topics, and this will most likely be an even more sensitive topic after her own casual sex adventure with Sven imploded. So Marten managed to hit her with a double-whammy offense all in just a few words. And all this on top of his drunken pass at her a couple days ago....
Yep, things are going to be seriously awkward between them for quite awhile, could even get ugly.
TheBiscuit:
If Faye does make a big deal out of this, my long-held admiration for her will suddenly dissipate, I must say.
pwhodges:
Faye could, of course, return the awkwardness in spades by telling him about his drunken pass...
But I hope that's not the way it goes; not least, Hanners would finally implode with embarrassment.
Blackjoker:
I suggest that one of them brings in ludicrous hats, that should disrupt the awkward zone or at least refocus it.
