Sounds of QC - Now With More Accents
« on: 23 Feb 2011, 14:04 »

We've been clogging up the Confessions thread for too long now with our discussions about accents. The time has come, my friends, to record your glorious accents and share them with the rest of us. Revel in your accent, however slight or pronounced it may be, and join in the fun!

I will record something when I get home and can talk to my computer and not look batshit insane. Promise!

Should we construct some kind of phrases/sentences/paragraphs everyone would ideally include to highlight the differences? (No I am not volunteering to do this because I am super lazy.)

Ok, here is what happened the first time I tried to record something. Ben is a jerk and saying random words in the background.

http://vocaroo.com/?media=vojluDzOgWHyCXOqa

Take Two:

http://vocaroo.com/?media=vKMN4AWhLxvLpq4JI

This is page 199 of Raymond Chandler's 'Farewell, My Lovely'. I haven't read it before, so sorry that the reading is a bit stilted. There were actually many interim takes where I laughed at stupid things Ben was saying, or tried to read a passage and didn't know what something was, but I figured one stupid outtake was enough, especially seeing as most of the others involved me swearing at him.

On the other hand it explains your preposterous supposition that there's barely any difference between Australian and New Zealand accents.

All your Aussie/New Zealand accents sound so nice, I could listen to them forever. I had a professor from Sydney last semester in a class I despised but I paid attention every lecture causer her voice was so pleasant, ha.

Anyway, here's me reading an excerpt from Please Kill Me. Keep in mind I have a cold and that even without a sore throat and stuffy nose I sound nasally and annoying and scratchys. Enjoy (you probably won't)

i'll just drop this here.

http://www.bl.uk/evolvingenglish/mapabout.html

from lifehacker:

Map Your Voice is a neat project that helps you learn any accent by clicking a point on a map and listening to how a person from that area speaks a pre-specified piece of text.

If you're curious about the nuances of speech or want to learn an accent to better understand it, Map Your Voice is a neat project that can help you do that. Upon visiting the site, you can just click a point on the map and click the play button to hear a person speaking. The text is, for the most part, consistent (you hear a passage about Mr. Tickle). If you want to contribute you can by uploading a sample of your voice. Many areas are well-represented, but if you're from an under-represented area you, especially, may want to consider adding your voice to the project.
