Someone who hates everything and/or is a total douchebag. Or both.

In British and Australian English too. In Chinese, Thailand is 泰国 (Tàiguó, meaning "Thai country"). I don't know how the Thai language is romanized, or how the silent letter "h" came to be used in English. The Thai writing system includes 44 consonants, 15 vowels and 4 tone-marks, which might have something to do with it. There are many words in Chinese that are romanized as tai but all are pronounced "tie" (with various tones of course) as in tai-chi, Taiwan etc.
According to a couple of baby-name websites I looked at, the name Tai is derived from Chinese or Vietnamese. Apparently Tai means "talent" in Vietnamese, but I cannot comment on that because I don't know the language. The Chinese translations given are "from Thailand" (which would be 泰 (tài), but strikes me as unlikely for an English-language given name), or "big" (which I suspect is an inept translation of 太 (tài) which actually means "greatest" or "highest" in that sort of context).
Skewbrow:
@bunnyThor, Andy147, Akima: Thanks for the bits about pronunciation and the origin of the name 'Tai'. I had to try it out and, indeed, even I pronounce the early part of 'thin' and 'this' differently. I must have picked it up at some point, but would have zero chance to write them phonetically. I was surprised to learn that 'Thai' is pronounced 'tie' and not 'thy', though.
Sorry about going off-topic, again.
