Depends on where you are. I, too, need to hit AltGr to get square brackets (makes using Mathematica royal pain). The US keyboard layout is easier in this respect. FYI I have Scandinavian letters with diacritical extras, where our American friends have them brackets.

On a US Keyboard, square brackets ( [ ] )* don't need any other key. Curly brackets ( { } )* are square brackets with the shift key.
