Haircut Martin looks just like Dora!!!
« on: 04 Aug 2011, 06:14 »

Does this mean Martin is feminine or Dora is masculine?

No, of course not.

The similarity of Dora's and Marten's* hair for much of the history of QC has been remarked on frequently in the forums, and by the characters themselves in a few strips (e.g. here and here).  There was also a guest strip in which a sex-change occurred, making them look identical.

* Also note the spelling of Marten.

C'mon. They look nothing alike!

Dora's eyes are brown and Martin's are blue.

Geez, people. Pay attention!

The thread for not being able to spell Marten even when it has just been pointed out...

Deliberate misspeling because of the sillyness of the thred in generel!

Martin = Classic spelling of a man's name

Marten = A kind of bird and the manatee-on-codine we all know and love!

And Marten is also a name (e.g., as in Doc Marten).

Martin = Classic spelling of a man's name

Marten = A kind of bird and the manatee-on-codine we all know and love!

marten = A kind of mammal; the bird is "martin".

More specifically, a type of weasel.  Cute, but still a weasel.

There's also a trucking company called Marten that uses a bird in its logo.

That's alright, corporate names and logos are allowed artistice license.

My favorite is the pickup truck cap maker Leer, whose logo is a crown underneath which it says "Leer - King of Caps"

C'mon, King Leer?  Really?

The unusual combination of black hair and blue eyes has drawn attention in the strip before. It runs in the family.

Type of mustelid, not weasel. :x Same family, same subfamily, different genus. Martens are as closely related to badgers as they are to weasels.

I am terrible at remembering eye color.  Looking back at the few girls I've dated, I looked at their eyes plenty, and probably thought they were nice, but I haven't the foggiest what color any of them had.

I don't notice eyecolor either, but that has more to do with my own eyesight than anything else.  I'm only correctable to about 20/40, just good enough to drive.  My glasses are extraordinarily powerful, and make everything look smaller (and curved).  So small details like irises are just not in the picture....

See, at least you have an excuse.  I can tell what color someone's eyes are, but I have to actually think about it to notice what color they are, and I won't store that knowledge.

To my surprise I could find that record easily enough. Too bad my turntable is buried under a pile of other stuff. Should I do something rash like google for a youtubed version? I never really found her androgynous.  Thin, yes; but most definitely feminine, in appearance, attitude and demeanor.  A strong feminine, mind you - no stereotypical "lil' ol' me" crap.  But far enough from masculine to be un-androgynous.  Or non-drogynous.

Whatever.

Definitely not to the extent that, let's say, Tai is, but yes, I have always found Dora to be somewhat androgynous. Again, this could be solely my perception...

I don't think any of the female characters are overly girly but Dora..it's hard to pin it down exactly.

They're girly but not overly so. Mind you, what I consider very girly and what you do may differ. I think skirts, dresses, pink, makeup, nail polish, hair perfectly done. That doesn't describe any women in QC.

But yeah, Raven definitely rocks the red lipstick and the monroe. lol.

No, I agree. It's simple (though not perfect) logic.
1. Dora looks like Marten.
2. Marten is not androgynous.
=> Dora is androgynous.

Not wholly, but yes, a little bit. Short hair, thin, smallish boobs, these are classic aspects of female androgyny.

When I first saw Dora in this comic, my first impression of her was androgyny. Obviously not as much as Tai, but still noticeable. Her short hair, small chest, clothes, stuff like that. I'm sure that it was an intentional choice on Jeph's part...I live near the area where this story takes place, and I see girls like Dora when I am in Northampton often. So I guess I might say that I have firsthand knowledge...lol.

See, I always thought androgyny had to be more than just things like clothes and haircuts.  Sure, you can mistake a lot of people for the opposite gender from a bit of a distance, but if you get close, they're clearly female (as was/is Dora) or male.  To me androgyny needed a little bit more - standing near them, even on a second or third look, you're still getting mixed signals.

I think of Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria, or John Leguizamo in To Wong Foo thanks for everything, Julie Newmar.  Or that episode of Bones, where a Japanese "kei" leaves everyone working there wondering what his/her gender is after a week of close collaboration.  Angela finds out at the end by giving him/her a hug.  The results were ...
