Names are a fascinating thing. As soon as you give something a human name, people are less inclined to kill it.

I am very curious how the rest of that conversation goes.  something tells me it leads to hell boy patting a crying monster on the back saying "there, there"

I think they load him into a truck for transport and Hellboy gives him a photo of his family. He's slowly losing his mind and they have no idea how to stop it, pretty soon he'll just be a monster.

I dunno, if I had to read a set of dialogue like this TvTropes page, all throughout a book, I'd probably go nuts.

Professional fiction writers and editors will tell you to very very rarely use something other than a simple he/she said. Most of the exceptions are he/she asked. The way to avoid repetition is to eliminate a lot of them via making sure there's enough context to know who's talking..

I find alternatives to "said" useful when writing non fiction (though obvs some of those words are not appropriate).  When writing an academic essay and citing someone it can be difficult to incorporate the sources I want without using the same verbs over and over.

Words I use a lot:
writes, states,  notes, offers, shows, explains, claims, asserts, argues, concedes, concludes.

Their varied meanings, of course, don't make them interchangeable, but by changing up the sentence structure and how I present the information (e.g. as a quote v. a summery) I can prevent myself from writing a paragraph full of "Smith argues... Smith argues... but Kim argues..."

That there are women serving in the ANA actually gives me hope for that blighted little hell hole. Hope the Taliban Remanent choke on it.

There is actually even a female general in the ANA, who was also Afghanistan's first female paratrooper in 1984. She's pretty awesome.
