I need to find the latter version. Now.
If you ignore the implausibility of anyone mistaking Zhou Wei for a man, it is pretty good. It's out on BlueRay and DVD with English subtitles. It's no Red Cliff, but I enjoyed it.

This. Is. Awesome.

I guess this is someone's meme

I found a thread with many more examples, which was probably the original - but it was on 4chan and the page was surrounded by NSFW ads, so I've linked this safe version here.

Er, way to miss the point, and then some!  But to be fair, that cartoon, while funny if you know the show (and the fandom), really tells you nothing whatsoever about it if you don't.

Well... Jokes never exist in a vacuum do they? And the contrast between popular arts and the tacky consumer products they inspire is pretty universal. It's hard to take a film seriously, for example, that inspires a line of plastic action figures, never mind waifu pillows.

My memory may be slowly going, but I believe at one point Jeph mentioned that QC is essentially one long love letter for Neon Genesis Evangelion.

@Welu: was I close?

Warning:Wall of Text

Despite the appearance of a mecha anime NGE is actually rather complex.  The overall theme being how we relate to one another and the love/joy/pain/sorrow we feel from our interactions with each other.  All of the characters in the show are rather tragic and none are without flaws (Quite the opposite actually) and have endured some very painful circumstances in the past and will continue to throughout the series.  If you have trouble sympathizing with characters who are anything but perfect the show might annoy you to no end.  For me though this was the reason I felt so much for the characters and why the show had such a huge effect on me.  The original TV series finale ends rather upbeat but was hated by fans as the studio had essentially run out of time and money to complete the last two episodes, so much of the original ending takes place in the minds of the characters.  The movie End of Evangelion was the creator's response to the slew of hate mail they received after the TV ending aired.  It more clearly shows what led up to the events in the TV series ending as some of the scenes shown in the TV ending made little sense as they were without almost any context.  It features some very graphic violence and gore and a rather shocking scene and is quite...dark.  The conclusion in the movie however is completely different than the TV series ending.  I've honestly thought that Anno may have done that in response to the hate he received after the TV series ending.  It really is a series that I recommend watching if you enjoy anime at all, just be prepared for a serious mind fuck and lots of tragedy.  If you do you should probably watch the TV series with the original ending first and then the movie End of Evangelion which essentially replaces the last two episodes of the TV series which comprises the ending.  I actually watched the movie ending before I had actually seen the original last two episodes and I'm pretty sure the movie would have been that much more shocking had I seen the original first.  It's one of the few anime that I actually felt compelled to purchase after seeing it, along with Cowboy Bebop and a few others.

I am gonna disagree with Shogo's excellent synopsis on one point, it's not that the characters are flawed. It's just that Shinji is the biggest bitch in the history of the known universe across all time lines and alternate realities.

That said it's an excellent anime and I'm glad to have it on my shelf. (I got the Platinum edition box, a $100 box set for $30 at a con last year, I spent five hours friday working in the dealer's room and the trade was $50 in store credit and an extra employee discount on top of the con special the dealer was running, I was so fucking happy <3)

In other news:

Now THAT is what I call turning the tables.

The movie End of Evangelion was in no way a response to hate mail.  In fact it follows rather closely earlier versions of the scripting (and draft storyboards) of the intended ending which they weren't able to complete for TV, and was made as soon as they could afford to (the preceding compilation movie Death, unsatisfactory though it is, raised enough money to finish the job).  In spite of what some people say, the meaning of the ending is the same in both cases (Shinji rejects Instrumentality).  There is a screen in the movie that is full of fan mail; only two of the things on it could in any way be considered hate mail, and they are both very generic (one was in fact graffiti on a wall).  The English-dubbed DVDs of End of Evangelion are technically badly flawed, with seriously damaged video, such that the company that made them - Manga - is referred to in this context as "Mangle"; they are also out of print, and no English-speaking company has a current licence for the film at all.  To see the film as it should look, you have to get the Japanese version, or the Italian dub, or this year's new French release (I got the Italian version and added the English dub to the file for my own viewing copy).

On the show itself - Shinji and Asuka both have serious psychological issues from their upbringing, which they fail to deal with in very different ways; Misato is pretty screwed-up, too.  Rei is an artificial being, so all bets are off with her; Kaworu is another artificial being created by a different group.  And what you see as mecha are actually organic beings, in spite of being controlled (usually) by "pilots".

It's worth remarking also that there are three distinct continuities - (1) the show plus the EoE movie; (2) the manga (written by the show's character designer), which was completed just this week after eighteen years; and (3) the new theatrical movies (usually referred to in English as Rebuild of Evangelion) of which the third of four was released recently.  There are differences in the characterisation in the three versions, and many details are incompatible between them, so care needs to be taken in discussion.

A thread about terrifying animals. Originally intended as inspiration for creating DnD monsters.

[Apes] are also very good at escpaing. I remember one case of an ape who stole a key from his keeper, went into the locker room, stole a zookeeper uniform, put it on directly and tried to march out the front gate.

My memory may be slowly going, but I believe at one point Jeph mentioned that QC is essentially one long love letter for Neon Genesis Evangelion.

I thought it was Azumanga Daioh, though Neon [...] sounds like it would fit as well.

Ok, but why on earth did they name the show "Gospel?" Or is it supposed to be the actual Greek word "of the good news?"

[I think that's the Greek. I'm much better at Hebrew then Greek.]

I am gonna disagree with Shogo's excellent synopsis on one point, it's not that the characters are flawed. It's just that Shinji is the biggest bitch in the history of the known universe across all time lines and alternate realities.

You really think so?

Hmm, I certainly didn't get the same idea from the TV series conclusion as EoE's.  I may have to watch those two episodes again.  And yeah, the "official" English translation of EoE is abominable.  Its almost hard to believe that the professional translators did worse than many fansubs.

My torrent server has a file* on it which is an edit interleaving the greater part of episodes 25 and 26 and EoE, so that you see how the ideas in them fit together into a single sequence.

I thought it was Azumanga Daioh

It was - hence Emily's surname: Azuma.
