The sooner we abandon Detroit as the useless fethhole it is, evacuate the people, and raze the city to the ground, the better off Michigan will be.

Yeah?

Well I have lots of responses that violate the rules of this forum.

So many people are happy to jump on the "Burn Detroit" wagon, without knowing shit about the city or the region.  Screw the 4 million people living in the metro area, someone 1,000+ miles away has decided that we should abandon ship, and they are obviously an expert.

Lee, I was just offering a counter view to your post, it was GarandMarine who offended me.

Detroit is not without its problems.  I'm not trying to say that it is operating as a model city right now.   They have a $300 million deficit and nearly $20 billion in debt.   The city has an emergency financial manager, though technically, Detroit did not declare a fiscal emergency, the State of Michigan declared one for them under an outrageous law that was voted down by the people of Michigan last November.  Crime is high and there are neighborhoods with more abandoned buildings than occupied ones.

But there is nothing more offensive then someone declaring that because of these problems the city should just be abandoned.  Detroit has a lot going for it, a number of companies have opened offices downtown and are attracting people back to the city. Unemployment in the city proper is under %10 for the first time in 5 years and the deal with Canada to build a new bridge will create even more jobs.  Detroit suffers from a small population spread over a large area (for scale, the land area of Detroit is almost 3 times that of Boston), but within that area, there are numerous awesome neighborhoods.  There are a bunch of people in and around the city who love and care about Detroit's future.  The city recently cut its parks department, and you know what? Residents volunteered to mow the lawns and pick up trash in city parks.

I don't have a problem with people talking about Detroit's problems, but I do think it is harmful to the city's future when negative things are all anyone sees about the city.  And I am certainly offended when someone suggests that the city just be abandoned and its residents rounded up and forced to move somewhere else, as though the city had nothing to offer and it's citizens had no rights.   Lots of places in the world suck, it's not clever, or funny, or helpful to just declare them hopeless shitholes, and advocate for their destruction.

Looking into it, the banana picture is actually from a forum for a java implementation of openGL, so it's relevant. Still funny as hell.

I mostly lurk these days, but I have to step out of the shadows and support 100% what Papersatan is saying.  I was born in Detroit and still visit a couple of times a year.  Yeah, it's depressing to see it now as compared to 40 years ago.

But compared to 10 years ago, it's doing better.  It's making a slow recovery, not without its occassional setbacks, and it (mostly) has the support of the people of the state of Michigan.

GarandMarine, you're an idiot.  Yeah, that's probably against the rules to say.  I don't give a fuck; that was one of the stupidest things I've ever read.  I would love to see your economic justification for spending money to destroy the substantial assets and resources still in Detroit, and Michigan somehow coming out ahead in the deal.

The Lions suck, though.

Probably not a justification of removing the city in its entirety.

Raincloud forms in the Facebook server room, and rain falls from it.

(later)
Yes I know that spelling "server" as "sever" throughout makes this seem suspicious, so here's a more reliable source.

The translation isn't brilliant, but I like this a lot.

It's quite an old joke (most knock-knock jokes are), and the thread-jackers brought it back round to the intended punchline, via wit.

Monk:Is it an evil spirit?

Monk: *crosses himself*
I get, is funny because misogyny.

I know it's the Pointless Thread and all but I'm getting sick of people on the internet (at large) who seem incapable of holding two thoughts about something in their head. Like the other day I saw somebody (on tumblr, probably) ranting about GoT and how "people shouldn't be saying Tyrion is a good person for not raping Sansa even though he could have gotten away with it, that's just basic not-being-a-shit-person, does he want a cookie for it or something?" Why do we think we are too dumb to have conversations about things like this?

We should be able to dredge up some of those high school English class analytical skills and say, "Tyrion's refusal to force himself on his teenage bride, despite the expectations of the society and the orders of his family, reveals the decency of his character to the reader. However, it is concerning to see his behavior held up as a model for decency today, because it may tell young men that emulating it - literally, choosing not to commit rape even when he could get away with it - makes him a 'hero', rather than simply 'not a rapist'. In discussing it, we must find ways to use the story to teach people to be critical of what our society will allow, and comparing it to their moral code to find a path to decency."

You don't have to ignore a work's context to be able to talk about its place as a piece of media.

I might be giving Moffat too much benefit of the doubt, but it's a fucking monk. Monks were sworn celibacy, to break it was a sin. Why wouldn't he consider women a source of temptation? Eve, snake, apple, blah blah I'm not religious but I at least know that part. Was the exchange necessary? No. Was it a completely unreasonable reaction for the character? Also no.
