I guess the joke is that he doesn't want to wear "what we wore in WW2"
He says WW1.

Basically, Hipster Hitler wants to have some hipsterisch avant-garde uniforms and does not realize that he is going to the well-established Hugo Boss company to buy them. The other guy is tired of Hitler being picky and doesn't say anything.

And that, kids, is how I met your mother how Germans came to wear Hugo Boss uniforms.

Im not even sure what the best part of that gif is, the fall, the tense preparation for hoodie removal, or where it took place.

Emma Watson with dry brush.  It's almost creepy how the image just seems to materialize.  It honestly never occurred to me that these super-realistic charcoal or pencil drawings are actually done almost entirely with paint...here when I first saw the term dry brush I thought it meant that they used powdered charcoal or graphite and applied it to the paper with a brush.

A cis-male is the opposite of a trans-male. Cis-gender means that your perceived gender is in accordance with your sex. If I remember correctly, the word "cis" is the opposite of the word "trans", and seeing as transgender people are being labelled as trans, cisgender people are labelled cis.

please correct me if I'm wrong, that's just how I remember it all.

(also, what's a 'cis-male'?)

To confirm Masterpiece's post, a cisgender man is someone who feels male and was assigned Male at birth. Cis- is literally the opposite of Trans- in latin. Trans- being "On the other side of" and Cis- being "On this side of". Hence why it's often seen on maps, like "Gallia Cisalpina" meaning "Gaul on this side of the Alps". Just what ya'll ended up being called with regards to gender as a result of calling us Transgender.

The word "trans" originated as a slur, used by people who wished to classify and demote a group of people they perceived as wrong.

The opposite of the Latin word "trans" is "cis".

Ergo, by their own definition, a human being whose sex matches with that of his perceived gender is classified as "cis".

Sex ≠ gender.

The wonderful people in this thread will probably help you much better than I can.

And thank you Valdís for the additional information! :)

The cis- thing covered much better by others. As for SFWA, if ANYbody wins the Nebula, there's a huge flame war over it. SFWA has been having flame wars since before there was an Internet (in any real sense at least, SFWA was founded in 1965), and one member semi-facetiously wrote up a flame-war calendar to assign specific recurring flame wars to to each month of the year so we could keep things straight.

Right now, the buzzword is diversity. Not that it isn't needed in the organization (and in fandom in general -- as an example of how strongly the stereotype of pudgy, balding middle aged white men with beards fits, I can usually spot people going to the World Science Fiction convention each year on my connecting flight to the final destination. At one convention in Seattle I was at, they placed a hard limit of 6 people on all the elevators rated for 3000 lbs.), and not that anybody disagrees that it's needed, but there's a good sized sub-group in science fiction fandom/writing who are pretty successful at using the issue to boost their own standing by pouncing on anybody who wavers from the party line.

Did it really? Or did it originate as shorthand for someone who was transitioning to a different gender (or sex, whatever).

I dunno these things so don't get all sjw tumblr on me here.

No, if you express an opinion deviating from the norm, you get pounced on.

Also, that picture is A) totally photoshopped and B) should have been captioned "MEANWHILE, IN RUSSIA"

I dunno, pic looks pretty legit to me.  I mean, a Polish unit trained a bear to carry ammo crates, drink beer and smoke cigarettes in WWII, so anything's possible.

But yeah, it's weird that the sci fi community is like that, when if anything, most science fiction is the opposite (unless I've completely misunderstood it all these years).

Re: SFWA and SF fandom in general, there's really never been a problem of acceptance of anybody into the group. In fact I'd say that over history, the SF/F world has typically been about 2 or 3 decades ahead of the rest of society when it comes to questions of race or gender issues. But for some reason, the actual demographics have stubbornly remained predominantly white, though with the wider acceptance of sci-fi/fantasy in media beyond books, that's finally changing. There is, however, a very small and very vocal group who get as worked up as the video Hitler about it all.

I think the only significant divide among the vast majority of people in the SF/F culture is between those who feel the genuine openness and acceptance is enough, and those who feel there should be active outreach. Of course, being fandom, things like this are discussed in detailed minutiae on any forum we can get our hands on. So in trying to work out what should be done, of course at some point, people are going to say, "I think this thing could be done, but I don't think that thing is worth the effort and might even be counterproductive," in reasonable tones of discourse. The handful of Tumblr/Livejournal pundits then start screaming, "YOU MUST AGREE TO DO ALL THE THINGS OR YOU ARE A RACIST/SEXIST PIG!" which is never a good way to get people on your side, but sure does draw a lot of attention.

Why I think the video is brilliant is because it not only pokes fun at the extremists, but also gets in some nice digs at the hopeful naivete of a lot of the rest of us that things will just kinda get better on their own.

And since I've made far too many points in this thread, here's a cookie.

Maybe, just maybe, the "demographics" stubbornly remain predominantly white and male, because that "genuine openness and acceptance" is judged to exist, and be "enough", predominantly by white males? You might think you are building it right, but if they still don't come, there might be something wrong with your blueprints. A good start might be for SF/F to stop patting itself on the back about how far ahead it thinks it is of mundane society.

I'm not at all sure that SF/F films and TV are a step forward from books in this area. Generally, I think the opposite is the case. Compare the novel 2010: Odyssey Two with the film based on it, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and notice how all Clarke's non-white characters are remorselessly airbrushed out of the latter. The film came out in 1984, the same year as several non-SF/F films that managed to include multi-ethnic casts, and stories that did not exclude all nations other than the USA and USSR. Two or three decades ahead? Not so much.

Claiming that sci-fi was or is decades ahead in it's acceptance of gender and race is absolute bollocks. There were a few individuals who were ahead of the curve, but as a whole it absolutely has not been. It's always been a bit of a monochromatic boys club (despite some of the best authors being women) and that's only really been changing in the last 10 years or so. Not surprisingly, this is the point where the genres ridiculous obsession with Libertarian philosophies has started to slow down.

Edit: Something that geek culture seems to have a problem understanding, sci-fi included, is that they are not bastions of progessive thought, they are fairly conservative on the whole.

So I decided to check out the Steam sale, even though I hadn't had any plans to buy anymore games for awhile, and then I notice a Tomb Raider megapack, that includes every TR game ever, including the newest one (about Lara's origins) for less than $20.  Since I played a lot of TR back in the day, I thought, "why not?" and bought the pack.

So I install them and boot up the original game.  Remembering the schizo keymapping, I go to the control config and FINALLY figure out, 15 years after first playing the game, how to change the controls around.  Yeah yeah, laugh it up, I wasn't that bright when I was a kid, and once I got the carpel tunnel-inducing default keymapping down, I never gave thought to changing the layout.  So first thing I do, is remap the keys to a more logical layout.  I decided to map them so they'd be as close to my TES games layout and noted, with some amusement, that every key was configured for use with my left hand.  Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since I'm left-handed, until I remembered the old accusations of female night elf players playing with only one hand way back in WoW's early days.

But anyway, once I finished keymapping, I start a new game and start playing.  It took a minute to adjust, and then a minute later, I realize that my right hand had found its way to the mouse and I was trying to use it to look around and steer.  You know, like in EVERY game that's come out in the last 10-12 years.  I forced my hand off the mouse and continued playing through the first level (missing one of the secrets :( ) and into the second.  And the whole time I'm thinking, "This is SO WEIRD playing with only one hand and not being able to use the mouse period."  I could only wonder how I'd done this years ago with two hands (and why it took so long to figure out how to change keys).

A big issue that I'm still getting used to is having to press a button and use the movement keys to look around instead of just mousing around to do the same.  Not being able to reset the horizon height is a little weird too, but mainly because I keep the view more ground oriented, with the horizon way above my char's head, and on top of that, not being able to zoom out or in.  Gah!  Also, the autoaim for weapons is weird too.  I mean, it's nice that the computer does it for you, but still.  On top of that, the lack of proper strafing is making me pull my hair out.  In TES, WoW, Fallout and other games, I pretty much do not ever use the turn keys, I only strafe and turn with the mouse, so I've also got to get used to keyboard-turning again.  I haven't played any TR game beyond the sixth one, so hopefully the newer games have more mouse-friendly controls.

Makes one wonder how we got so good at these games with such limited control back in the day...but then again I suppose that's all there was at that point with system limitations and all or whatever.

Because some of us need to crusade to be allowed to be interested, at least in public. Otherwise stuff like the harassment of Kathy Sierra, or this stupid "fake geek girl" thing, or the sort of behaviour documented at Fat, Ugly or Slutty, would go unchallenged. And that would be bad. Wouldn't it?
