So
The AV Club threw this topic up to their editors a few weeks ago and it seemed to be an interesting point of discussion as I (and I assume most of you) have had similar experiences with ridiculous or non-ridiculous things that shocking and disturbing.
Probably the most vivid memories I have of getting the bejeezus scared out of me as a child were from these dreams I would have, wherein a fleshy orb-thing with eyes getting stabbed with a sword, and a guy shooting light out of his mouth. These nightmares would leave me sobbing and trembling. It was only some 15 or so years later that I was surfing channels on the tele and suddenly found myself watching those nightmares on the screen. They were from
Big Trouble in Little China, a classic 80's cult comedy that I was too young to understand as a fun movie.
Also like a lot of other people, cheesy horror films were absolutely terrifying to me as a young 'un. I couldn't sleep after seeing the beginning of Child's Play, where the gut-shot criminal stumbles onto the doll and dies.
As far as games are concerned, there was a sequence in Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego wherein a villain with a wind-up box and a monkey on his shoulder scrolled past on the screen. The music playing during that sequence scared the shit out of me.
Any such notable instances out there of being scared as a child by media?
