Ravel - Piano Concerto for the left hand

Paul Wittgenstein (older brother of the philosopher) was a pianist. After he lost his right arm in the First World War, he commissioned pieces for the left hand alone from a number of major composers. Ravel's concerto has become by far the best known of these. In general Ravel deliberately avoided writing two pieces in the same genre, but decided that this commission could be sufficiently different from his earlier Piano Concerto to justify writing it. This concerto is much darker in mood than the other, and makes great play of different groups of instruments playing in the major and the minor simultaneously; the central section feels to me like a sort of dance macabre. Played by my son, performing in NYC last February, with David Robertson conducting the NY Phil.
