I haven't really listened to any new Darkthrone, but isn't the idea that they're going back and making music that's influenced by the punk that influenced black metal in the first place?

Pretty much.  There's actually very little black metal influence still noticeable in their music.

Fenriz told Decibel a while ago, "For the first time since I started Darkthrone in '87, I have SERIOUS problems in naming one band in the world we should be mentioned in the same sentence as."

As far as I can tell, that's a pretty accurate statement.
