SWOON! at My Gravitas:
Quick question

What are transcodes, and why do they suck?

"Transcoding is the direct digital-to-digital conversion of one encoding to another. This is usually done to incompatible or obsolete data in order to convert it into a more suitable format. When transcoding one lossy file to another, the process almost always introduces generation loss."

McTaggart:
Transcoding is when you take music in one format (ie, encoded in one way) and convert it into another one. This'd be fine except that most popular formats compress the data and you lose some of it (they're 'lossy' formats). When you take data that have been compressed and you uncompress it and then compress it again you lose even more. Basically the quality of it goes down the more you mess with it.

Ideally for each format you want the music in you do it from a lossless format fresh each time.

I can't believe I haven't posted this record yet, it's fantastic.

Last paragraph from the CMG review, found here > http://www.cokemachineglow.com/record_review/4569/ovwright-memphisunlimited-2009

--- Quote ---Memphis Unlimited is as good as a record can be without being an outright classic. Wright hovers just below the top ten interpreters of soul music in the canon, and his producer is content to perfect the soul format without expanding it. As a result, the achievement of Memphis Unlimited is not as immediately discernible as more groundbreaking work from the period. Repeated listening, however, reveals track after track of intricate craft and understated brilliance. Essential for anyone with more than a fleeting interest in soul, Memphis Unlimited stands as a record of a deep soul giant at his peak and is a logical next step for those who have exhausted the Al Green discography.

The best indie folk/pop album you'll hear all year. I fucking guarantee it.

I know this board has some Tim and Sam fans already on it, so get excited when I tell you: they've added vocals to their already-expansive repertoire.
