Alright.  This came in the mail yesterday.  Listened to it twice. 

So remember the Augury album I posted last page?  This is a side project featuring their guitarist, Matthieu Marcotte.  Dominic "Forest" LaPointe guests on fretless bass, ChaotH of uneXpect fame guests on the 9-string bass, and Tommy McKinnon is on drums.  In the liner notes, it says he plays a "Backward 12 string acoustic guitar", whatever that means. 

It sounds a bit like Cynic, Augury, and Pink Floyd.  Which has got to be some unholy triumvirate of prog.

No AMG for this one. This is the only album by this folky/power pop band, and it's a shame this was the limit of their output. Great album that should be of interest to any power pop or 80's pop fan, and I believe it is oop.

This file includes the 1985 s/t album and a mini-lp released in 1991 (they're included as bonus tracks).

Scenes often imply a style, but for the most visible exports of Toronto's post-millennial indie-rock scene-- Broken Social Scene, the Constantines, the Hidden Cameras-- the unifying principle has been not so much a common musical aesthetic as a communal ethic: the compulsion to crowd the stage with players and audience members alike, turning observers into participants and vice versa. Arriving in Toronto three years ago from the nearby town of Midland, on paper Born Ruffians seemed antithetical to the prevailing group-hug atmosphere: they boast no auxiliary horn or string sections, no spotlight-stealing guest female singers, no balaclava-clad dancers-- just three unassuming kids in standard guitar/bass/drums formation. But Born Ruffians haven't let their personnel deficiencies and basic instrumentation stop them from thinking and functioning like a mass collective-- they simply hoot and holler and make a spectacle of themselves (a cappella group-huddle sing-alongs, anyone?) like a band three times their size.

Born Ruffians' 2006 debut EP packed this restless vigor into six compact but complicated songs: wiry frontman Luke LaLonde shrieked about getting laid and getting paid, while bassist Mitch DeRosier and drummer Steve Hamelin seemed to be reacting not to the singer's melodic cues, but the convulsions in his puberty-freaked voice. So compared to this petulant precedent, the opening title track to the band's first full length, Red Yellow Blue, goes down like a horse tranquilizer: amid a rippling, hypnotic guitarpeggio, the sound of distant whistles and an eerily expansive sense of space, LaLonde's voice assumes a Panda Bear-like levity, as he sings of a fantasy to start his own country and choose the colors for its flag: "Such a myriad to choose from/ I pick red, yellow, and blue." Of course, he would go with primary colors-- for all their spastic outbursts and time-signature trickery, at the heart of every Born Ruffians song is a plea for simplicity.

That a band as tightly wound as Born Ruffians would eventually loosen the noose is not surprising; perhaps all those unwanted copies of Some Loud Thunder sitting in record stores served as a sobering reminder of what happens when a nervy indie-rock band sticks too close to type. But Red Yellow Blue plays out not as some premeditated step toward maturity-- following that opening reverie, the giddy one-two punch of "Barnacle Goose" and "Hummingbird" reassert equal proportions of the herky and the jerky-- rather, it explores different shades of the young-man's blues. Almost every song here sounds like a defense of some innocent ideal-- cooking dinner for "ma and pa and grand mama" ("Hedonistic Me"), a promise of unconditional love even "when the money's gone" (the Built to Spillerific stomper "Badonka Donkey")-- which, of course, makes LaLonde something of a modern-day outlaw. Hamelin and DeRosier's cheeky back-up harmonies reinforce the image of a 1950s doo-wop gang, summoned by LaLonde as if they were his own personal Sha Na Na.

But for all their childlike abandon, Born Ruffians are still too twitchy to ever come off as twee. For a three piece, they're like an anti-power-trio: LaLonde's tinny guitar tone is as thin as his frame, and Hamelin seems more intent on hitting the rims than the skins. But the threadbare presentation means the band never lets itself get too comfortable, instead introducing novel mid-song change-ups to elevate a track (the winsome two-part campfire serenade "Little Garcon, Little Fille"), or in some cases, salvage them ("In a Mirror", which, just as its circular melody crosses the line from insidious to annoying, kicks into a rousing victory-lap send-off). Or sometimes, it's just an easy but effective ploy to heighten the drama, like the middle break in "Kurt Vonnegut" that halts the song's drum-rolled momentum but sets up its heart-rending climax, where the Ruffians gradually lay off their instruments and, in three-part harmony, coax a girl to her bedroom window like a multi-headed Lloyd Dobler.

After this grand finale, it's surprising that Born Ruffians have anything left for closer "Red Elephant", and as such, the song feels like an unnecessary addendum, its repeating pattern of dirgey verses and sped-up choruses constituting one of the few instances here where the songwriting feels routine. But even if Red Yellow Blue overstays its welcome for one song, it still counts as one of this new year's most engaging and endearing indie-rock debuts. Which may echo the sentiments attributed to another debut album on this site recently, but then Born Ruffians are the Vampire Weekend you don't have to fret over-- all the witty wordplay and jingle-jangle joy, none of the nagging questions about Afro-pop appropriation and Ivy League privilege.

The Breeders' follow up to Title TK recorded off and on over several years and many locations with recording assistance from Steve Albini, Erika Larson, and Manny Nieto. The band experimented more with "unnatural adornments" like overdubs on this album which they've typically avoided on past albums.

When creating RAR files, most compression software will give you the option of splitting the archive into pieces based on size.  The person opening the rar just has to unpack one and it pulls from the rest of the archives to create the finished file.  This is how a lot of movies and games are torrented.

Along with their second and third albums - All the Footprints You've Left and the Fear Expecting Ahead and A Dead Sinking Story, respectively - we are happy to finally bring you Compiled Fragments 1997-2003. This collection of singles, rare tracks and unreleased gems maps Envy's storied transformation from pioneering spastic hardcore to masters of exquisite, triumphant doom. Originally released in 2003 on the group's own Sonzai Records in Japan, this album has never been available in North America, and has never been previously released on vinyl.

The album is just over 100 megs so I split it into two parts. Part one is the bulk of the album and part two are the two live tracks on this album.

The fact that this thread does not contain everything Mclusky ever did is a tragedy.  One that I plan to fix.

Mclusky - Mcluskyism

AMG:  Americans are graced to have the choice of the entire triple-disc version of Mclusky's sendoff compilation readily available at their local CD emporiums or pick up the single platter version with just the band's A-sides. The box set features the A-sides plus a CD of B-sides (which guitarist/vocalist Andy Falkous has trouble with, according to the liner notes) and another of C-sides (live cuts, demos, rarities, etc., that he likes, along with disc one). Mclusky were one of the U.K.'s woolliest, funniest, grittily in-your-face, rock & roll bands, though they were drastically underappreciated in their native Wales as well as abroad. They issued three full-lengths and a slew of singles during their lifetime.So much indie rock is predicated on a few different "acceptable" tropes; these yobs didn't play to any of them. That may sound like hyperbole for the benefit of being kind to the deceased, but it's not. Falkous and his mates knew how to tear down a joint when they were on, and they certainly understood how to make singles. They were totally obnoxious -- often evil little jerks on record -- but the music not only holds up, it puts to shame much of what was around them at the time. Of the 12 tracks on disc one, there isn't a song you can live without. This was a band that knew about Gang of Four, Fugazi's earliest incarnation, California's Adolescents, Big Black, and lots of other stuff -- and had fun with all of them. Here you get screaming, completely freaked-out garage punk in "Joy," and buzz saw/train wreck fuzz guitar in "Rice Is Nice," with screaming lead vocals and two-part harmony refrains. The distorto-flaming-car bassline on "That Man Will Not Hang" is one Dave Allen would have prostituted himself for back in the Go4 days, even if this tune apes them and the Fall circa "How I Wrote Elastic Man." The beautifully ragged garage pop of "She Will Only Bring You Happiness" is simply glorious for its buzzing drones, slippery and deceptively simple hook, and macabre lyrics sung so sensitively: "Note to invading aliens avoid this town/Like this town avoided us/Like murder stalked the valley/Where this woman used to live/And bathe/And breathe and be murdered...." It all ends with the true classic -- and favorite of Falkous -- "Without MSG I Am Nothing." It's all buzz, chaos, and loopy vocals sung, howled in falsetto, and chanted: "Everywhere I look is a darkness/I get my MSG from digital TV...You are the only one who has no trousers on...." One can hear John Lydon having a ball with this one, and the messed-up, sideways drum thud lends a narcotic beat to the over the top guitar distortion on the simple riff on which everything is based (except for that little fall-apart progresso-punk thing they do for a bridge). Disc two is less successfgul, and to be truthful, all but one or two cuts are just dross, filler and, yes, worse. Falkous is right in wishing most of this stuff was never re-relased. The live material on disc three is a mixed bag, but mostly it cranks and offers a solid portrait--despite some cvarying sound quality--of what the band was like when they were in front of a crowd as snotty and sarcastic--and most likley wasted--McLusky was. This set is a mess, a glorious din that has humor and warmth and danger and just plain loopy wisdom. the box may have been a bad ideas, but it is what there is available, and fans will not want to live without any of it mn most likely For other punters just getting their first gasbag load of McLuskyism, the A-sides disc will be planty. Mclusky may not be missed by many, but those who heard, believed. For them, this is a bittersweet, spit-in-your-eye goodbye.

The Third Eye Foundation - Semtex



This is technically considered an EP, but I call it an album, because it's album length.  This is the first release by Matt Elliott, who went by The Third Eye Foundation for many years, who has also been variously associated with Flying Saucer Attack and Movietone.

This album is similar in tone to his second album Ghost but is marked by more of a sense of being "haunted" than being "scary".  If Ghost were Tetsuo: the Iron Man then Semtex would be The Ring.  The drum-n-bass is still prominent on several songs, but much of the album is also very slow and shuffling.  It's a head trip album, remarkably listenable but, given headphones and the right drugs, a dark place to visit.
