Okay, I'm getting waaay too much out of this forum not to contribute in some way. So here you go. This album is amazing.

Takashi Hirayasu & Bob Brozman

Recorded on the Okinawan island of Taketomi, Jin Jin/Firefly documents a rare encounter between Okinawan singer/sanshin player Takashi Hirayasu and acoustic guitarist Bob Brozman. Forming a duo, the two prove to be highly compatible -- and when you think about it, they're a logical combination. Hirayasu's foundation is Okinawan music, which contains both Japanese and Polynesian elements; Brozman, meanwhile, is considered a master of the Hawaiian guitar and is no stranger to the sounds of the Pacific Islands. So it isn't hard for them to find common ground on "Akata Sun Dunchi," "Chinnuku Jushi," and other traditional Okinawan children's songs that Hirayasu selected. What the duo does with the songs isn't entirely traditional, however. Brozman brings plenty of blues, rock, and Hawaiian influence to the session, and that works for Hirayasu because the Okinawa native is hip to blues and rock himself. Hirayasu and Brozman both have a lot of charisma, and that proves to be mutually beneficial on this excellent CD.

You can keep your World of Warcrafts and Marios and such. I will always maintain that The Neverhood is the greatest video game of all time, hands-down. For those of you that have never heard of it, it's a point-and-click adventure game. Done entirely in claymation. Godlike. Anyway, this is the soundtrack to that game. The best description of the music I could find was on Wikipedia, oddly enough.

Musically, the Neverhood and Skullmonkeys soundtrack music follows few of the same paths as Taylor's solo or band music. It has often been described as sounding "clay-like," which was the phrase that TenNapel used when asking Taylor to create the soundtrack. The sound of distorted guitar, which is common in much of Daniel Amos' music, only makes an appearance on a couple of tracks. The lush Brian Wilson-ish productions or Folk styles of Taylor's solo albums are replaced with horns, Muppet-like vocals, clunky banjos and percussion that often sounds like it's simply falling out of its storage box. There are very few lyrics to speak of, and most of the vocals consist of little more than grunts, groans, an occasional scream and other odd noises that could not be transcribed.

Honestly, Boris aren't THAT amazing, sure they have some good experimental albums here and there but exactly how they became Hipster faves is beyond me. Nonetheless, this is an excellent album. Very hard rocking indeed, lots of huge riffs and massive low end, highly recommended.

Thergothon- Stream from the Heavens


These funeral doom pioneers (who went onto form an obscure but ahead of their time shoegaze/post-rock band, of which I will upload later), really tapped something amazing with this album. Easily the most lovecraft-esque thing I've ever heard, with everything from the super low vocals (there's some that are chanted/sung as well) to the strange, flanged guitars being incredibly reminiscent of a large, inconceivable primordial structure. Despite the lovecraft and talk about funeral doom, don't worry too much, this album is heavy but it's also quite beautiful (particularly Everlasting, Elemental and The Unknown Kadath..). Thergothon seem to excel at majestic, slowly unfolding riffs, and despite the talk about it being slow there's a surprising amount of different riffs. An utterly essential record.

For the second installment in the collaborative series of split albums between Temporary Residence Ltd. and Hydra Head Records, we find a match made in heaven with the ethereal, grandiose dirge-pop of Jesu splitting sides with stately, deserted majesty of Eluvium. Already fans of each other's music, the two artists sought to compliment each other and in the process stretched their individual sounds to their outermost limits. Jesu shoots for the moon with a trio of fuzzed-out tunes that owes more to first-wave British shoegaze groups like Swervedriver and Ride than Broadrick's own roots in Godflesh and Napalm Death. It's a beautiful and brilliant evolution in Jesu's already accomplished career. Eluvium aims for the heart of the sun with his magnum opus, a three-part collaboration with Jeremy deVine that stretches Eluvium's contemplative drones to a staggering twenty-one minutes, in which time the song transforms from a lonely rattle to a seismic, swirling storm of sound that grinds the piece to haunting quiet. As with all records in this series, this is strictly limited to 4,000 copies - 2,000 Hydra Head versions and 2,000 Temporary Residence Ltd. versions. The music and the artwork is the same on all copies, but the vinyl colors, label colors, and outer sticker colors will vary. We live to comfort you with our music, and confound you with our methods.

Not since the release of Tiamat's groundbreaking masterpiece Wildhoney in 1994 had the extreme metal scene witnessed such an overwhelming show of fan enthusiasm and uniform critical praise as that bestowed upon Blackwater Park, the astounding fifth effort from Swedish metal titans Opeth. A work of breathtaking creative breadth, Blackwater Park (named after an obscure German progressive rock outfit from the 1970s) keeps with Opeth's tradition by transcending the limits of death/black metal and repeatedly shattering the foundations of conventional songwriting, to boot. Rarely does a band manage to break new ground without losing touch with its roots, but Opeth has made a career of it -- perhaps never as effortlessly as on this occasion. But the biggest difference between Blackwater Park and previous offerings lies not in the remarkably high songwriting standards achieved by main man Mikael Åkerfeldt (that's a given with him), but in the first-time involvement of Porcupine Tree leader Steve Wilson, whose contributions as producer lend an unprecedented fluidity to Opeth's restlessly inventive arrangements. Like all Opeth LPs, Blackwater Park is divided not so much into songs as "movements," as the band likes to call them. Tracks start and finish in seemingly arbitrary fashion, usually traversing ample musical terrain, including acoustic guitar and solo piano passages, ambient soundscapes, stoner rock grooves, and Eastern-tinged melodies -- any of which are subject to savage punctuations of death metal fury at any given moment. Likewise, Åkerfeldt's vocals run the gamut from bowel-churning grunts to melodies of chilling beauty -- depending on each movement section's mood. With all this in mind, singling out specific highlights is pretty much a futile exercise; but for the benefit of first-time listeners, why not start out with the colossal, Arabian-flavored riffs of "Bleak," the memorable chorus of "The Drapery Falls," the surprisingly gentle intro of "Dirge for November," and, finally, the all-encompassing title track. Then, with patience (Opeth's music is everything but immediate), the rest of Blackwater Park's grand scheme will be revealed. As for more experienced Opeth disciples, few will disagree with the fact that, even compared to lofty prior achievements, Blackwater Park is surely the band's coming-of-age album, and therefore, an ideal introduction to its remarkable body of work.

This is Opeth's best work according to pretty much everyone. It's certainly the best album to listen to first. Personally I prefer Still Life (the first Opeth album I posted a page back), but if you could ever objectively quantify the quality of music, Blackwater Park would probably come in at number one. It's got the most diverse range of songwriting, the most beautiful melodies, the most incredible production (courtesy of Steven Wilson) and riffs that literally hurt. In summary, if you've never heard Opeth before get this album, and be blown away.

Note that I didn't state "if you think you'd like them" or "if you're interested." No, whether you think you'd like them or not is inconsequential. Get. This. Fucking. Album. Now.
