be weary of Agalloch. It's not bad, just very tame. Ulver + Coldplay springs to mind.

What.

Psh whatever, even if that analogy was accurate, Ulver would so thoroughly cover up for all the lame Coldplay brings to the table that you'd still come out the other end with a really good band.

Which is what Agalloch are.

(If Mediafire stops being a bag of horse dongs I should have a large-ish post of metal albums forthcoming sometime)

So I don't listen to death metal nearly as much as I used to.  I was REAL big into it 3-4 years ago.  There was a lot of really good stuff out there.  A lot of it was forgettable, though.  My introduction was Arch Enemy, whom I first found 5 years ago in the days of Kazaa when "Burning Angel" was labeled as a Metallica song titled "Wages of Sin".  I haven't listened to Arch Enemy in at least a year.  My point is, these albums are the ones I come back to the most, moreso than Cynic, !T.O.O.H.!, Lykathea Aflame or Suffocation.

AMG doesn't have anything on them, but it got a 94% from 11 reviews at the Metal Archives.  The best way I can describe it is that this is the metal a comet might listen to as it hurdles through space.  All the members are extremely talented, and write some of the best metal I've ever heard.

ahh that lil story takes resonance in my own metal adventures.... love those old mistitled gems in kazaa.. like the numerous "i dont know who sings this so i'll label it sepultura vs machine etc"...
thanks for the tip*

That was my first go at buying vinyl on eBay (and also the first new vinyl I've bought in a LONG time). I wish I'd gotten in on the initial selling from Southern Lord. It was only $5.

Are you kidding me? You're probably one of those guys that buys vinyl to listen to it right? Pfff!

Peasant.

I bought an original and a re-issue of London Calling. I only listen to the reissue.

I'll be honest, I got this off a blog. My internet is shite, I can't really upload anything myself.

Natural Snow Buildings- Song for Laurie Bird
Anyway, it's one of the finest drone releases I've ever heard. Really, really pretty, and while the development within the songs take a while, it's really worth it. Amazing stuff, and pretty much impossible to find in physical format.

I got it from this excellent blog: http://deletedscenesforgottendreams.blogspot.com/

Also: I have no idea how to put it in that code box thing. I fail  :-(

Does anyone know of a good software that can give me an Artist then albums text file of my itunes library, preferably for mac. Something easy to read would be nice, like an outline almost.

 B. Album 2

Ya know. I like contributing, I just can't think of anything off the top of my head, so it'd be nice if I could just post a pdf or txt of everything and let people tell me what they'd like (through a private message of course, I don't want to clutter your thread)

So Mediafire is a bag of horse dongs, so only one metal album. But it's totally awesome, so yay! And I'll endeavour to have more up over the next week or so.

Opeth-Still Life

Quote
Having taken their oppressive black metal symphonies to their furious zenith with their third effort, My Arms, Your Hearse, Sweden's Opeth began deconstructing their sound on 1999's brilliant Still Life. A logical next step in their evolution, the album finds the band re-examining their unlikely fusion of progressive rock and black metal to highlight the former while staying in touch with the latter. The result is a formidable splicing of harsh, often jagged guitar riffs with graceful melodies, and the increasing use of Mikael Akerfeldt's "clean" vocals (alternated with his ever-present death growl). This tactic only serves to spotlight the quality of Akerfeldt's lyrics (a rarity in extreme metal circles) and, in the tradition of prior efforts, Still Life is a full-fledged concept album, which, without going into unnecessary details, centers around a tale of unrequited love for a character called Melinda (a discreet reference to Mercyful Fate's early-'80s classic Melissa, perhaps?). Also new to the mix are a wealth of more dynamic, almost groove-oriented riffs (see "Godhead's Lament" and "Serenity Painted Death") which break away from the Wall of Sound overtures of the past. On the other hand, outstanding, multi-faceted epics like "The Moor," "Moonlapse Vertigo," and "White Cluster" carry on in the proud Opeth tradition. The all-acoustic "Benighted" is the album's only one-dimensional track (and a beauty it is, too), while the awesome "Face of Melinda" represents a new career high with its quietly building atmosphere and powerful finale. Ultimately, this is another star turn for the group, and the fact that they somehow managed to outdo themselves with their next work, Blackwater Park, is a testament to Opeth's greatness

Allmusic is silly, it's not black metal in any way, shape or form, but apart from that the review is basically dead on.

To summarise: This album is so fucking good you'll shit.

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to mediafire.com, in multiple parts if the album is over 100mbs. The reason for this is that we know Mediafire is safe and efficient, and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Also, please do NOT request albums.

Despite me not really liking metal, I've heard a little from Opeth and have thought that they might be my gateway into the genre...there's stuff about it I like, but I can't quite get over the voices, although I think that's something that can be fixed with time. Which of the two uploaded albums should I get if I'm not exactly a metal person?

I actually used Opeth as my gateway band to metal! I started with Blackwater Park but I can't upload that due to huge time constraints in my life right now (fuck you school musical, even though your West Side Story). Of the two that were uploaded I'd start with the first one, Still Life. It has more melodic parts in it than Orchid and I think it's overall a better album. Not that Orchid is bad though.

I was already a Metal fan before getting into Opeth, but I had, prior to them, never listened to growl vocals.  Now, they don't bother me at all, and in the case of certain bands, like Opeth, they're quite amazing.
Anyway, I agree, get 'Still Life' first, but Orchid is pretty amazing as well.
If mediafire wasn't rejecting my uploads, I'd share 'Lamentations' as well, because its a great album.  Lamentations is live, so it has some variation throughout their library, including the 'Damnation' record, which is all acoustic, no growls, like, for instance, "Benighted" from Still life.

Anyway, I'll try uploading it again.  Lets hope it works...

Hey, about my question concerning exporting the album list in itunes... it turns out the program you need is... drum roll... Itunes. You just make a playlist of all your albums and then go to print, and it gives you the option to print "Album List" and you can just export it to pdf.

I was just thinking the other day about how much I love Opeth and how I've only really listened to Ghost Reveries, Deliverance and Damnation.  It's kind of like that with this board.  I want weird black metal, and somebody puts up Woods of Infinity out of nowhere (which, by the way, is still blowing my head off).  I want Built to Spill, and someone puts up every album I have and a few I didn't.  This week I've been wondering about dub, listening to a lot of the local pirate radio reggae program, and I know for a fact that someone somewhere will eventually put something up on QC that's the best example of the genre I've ever heard.

This is a blanket THANK YOU to all of you for making the internet special and for generally having good taste.

Dub!  I don't know if this is going to be the best example of the genre you've ever heard but I like it.

Scientist - Scientist Meets the Space Invaders

Quote
In addition to boxing fellow engineer Prince Jammy, ridding the world of vampires, and winning the World Cup, Scientist used his early-'80s records to thematically battle computer game foes. But prior to taking on Pac-Man, Scientist first "met" the Space Invaders on this 1981 Greensleeves release. The cosmic theme is well served on ten effects-riddled tracks, with the rockers-style material being littered by all manner of stratosphere-breaking sounds from the mixing board. However, compared to the bustle of earlier efforts like Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, Scientist Meets the Space Invaders comes off sounding lean and steely, strategically adorned with snatches of ghostly echo and pneumatic percussion; it's certainly an appropriate mood for a post-apocalyptic battle involving cartoon machines. And just below this incorporeal layer of sound is the fine and original production work of Linval Thompson (Scientist also mixed cuts by rival producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes) and the stellar playing of the Roots Radics band. A great dub title, which, like Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires, is one of Scientist's essential recordings. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide

I just want to first off say thank you for the gifts you kind folk have bestowed upon me. I've been going through all the pages and my collection has increased. A lot. I was up 'till 6 am (i work third shift) enjoying the many treats found here 'till my eyes got blurry.

So I'm going to start returning the favor.
I'll try this to test the waters:

J Dilla - Donuts
Quote
Donuts is an instrumental hip hop album by producer J Dilla. Donuts was released on February 7, 2006, his 32nd birthday, and only three days before his death. This album was a major breakthrough for this underground artist, in which his unique style could be shown and many see as having subtle meanings in many of its tracks and their names (for example, the titling of "Don't Cry" and "Bye" in light of Dilla's passing afterwards). The album landed on many 2006 year-end 'best-of' lists.

I've also included the EP, J Rocc's Picks. Donuts is 192 kbps MP3, and the EP is kinda all over the place.

Wow, Opeth is pretty cool. I still think it will take some time to get totally used to the harder songs with the metal growls, although I can certainly respect the incredible instrumentation. At the moment though, I really really like the song "Face of Melinda."

I think I may be starting to realize why some people think metal is good. I never got it before.

Dio is a great singer, but Black Sabbath with Dio on vocals sounds quite different and to many are a different band, thus not the "real" Black Sabbath.  Yes, it's a slight against Dio, but it's not an unwarranted one.  I have the Black Box, but even with all that, my favorite Black Sabbath album is Heaven and Hell, with Dio.  I got tired of Ozzy's voice, while I don't think I'll ever get tired of Dio's.

Although I am of the opinion that only the first four Sabbath albums are the true canon, I would not mind seeing the rest of the black box up here. I should really give the others another listen.

Be Your Own Pet - Get Awkward[2008]

bio from allmusic

Quote
Blasting out of Nashville, TN, like a bottle rocket, the teenage garage-noise-pop band Be Your Own Pet makes music that's as frenzied as it is catchy. The band formed in 2003 out of the ashes of Night Shift Nurses, which was the project of drummer Jamin Orrall and his bassist brother Jeff. The pair practiced in their basement and also ran the label Infinity Cat; and eventually joined forces with guitarist Jonas Stein -- who was in another band on the label, Jimmy Cushman?, at the time -- and singer Jemina Pearl, a friend from Nashville School of the Arts. Playing house shows and gigs at the all-ages venues Guido's Pizza and Bongo Java, the group honed its spastic-yet-poppy sound. When Jeff Orrall left the band to explore Iceland, Nathan Vasquez entered the band's ranks as their new bassist, and the quartet rechristened themselves Be Your Own Pet, taking the name from a song by fellow Infinity Cat group Art Circus. With a firmly established lineup and new name, Be Your Own Pet began working on demos with a handful of producers, including Jacquire King and Jamin and Jeff's father, singer/songwriter Robert Ellis Orrall. (The rest of BYOP's members also have musical pedigrees: Jemina Pearl's father is rock photographer Jimmy Abegg, Vasquez is the son of guitarist Raphael Vasquez, and Stein's father is manager Burt Stein.) The band released their first single, "Damn Damn Leash" -- a hooky, punky, whip-smart song that echoed the best of Blondie and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs -- as a CD-R on Infinity Cat; the track made its way to BBC Radio One presenter Zane Lowe, whose support for Be Your Own Pet won the band an early U.K. following. Meanwhile, attention-getting gigs at 2004's CMJ and 2005's South by Southwest began creating a buzz for the group stateside. A string of EPs for Rough Trade and XL followed, including a re-release of Damn Damn Leash and Fire Department in 2005, and Let's Get Sandy (Big Problem) early in 2006. Thurston Moore, another early fan, signed Be Your Own Pet to his Ecstatic Peace imprint to release the band's material in the U.S.; Redd Kross' Steve McDonald produced the sessions for the group's full-length debut. Summer Sensation, a collection of Be Your Own Pet's demos and EP tracks, became the band's first widely distributed U.S. release and arrived in spring 2006, just before Adventure was chosen as the lead single from Be Your Own Pet, which was issued that summer.

It's kind of like that with this board.  I want weird black metal, and somebody puts up Woods of Infinity out of nowhere (which, by the way, is still blowing my head off).

I think that was me...Hehe, I had no idea anyone had even downloaded it. It was very good, though.

I haven't been to this thread for a while. I see I have missed out on some great stuff.
