The excellent debut album from Louisville's June of 44. Full of wonderfully complex, sparkly, twinkly guitar melodies that develop into loud, angular surges, which Jeff Mueller and Sean Meadows scream stuff about boats over. Fucking amazing math-rock/post-rock. Download this goddamn album already, because I'm at a loss to describe its awesomeness.

Every time I tried downloading this from Soulseek, the first three tracks were from The Anatomy of Sharks.  I will be severely disappointed if such is the case here.

Don't worry, no such tomfoolery in my post.

Then again, The Anatomy of Sharks has Sharks and Sailors, which is top contender for best/favorite Jo44 song.

How could you not love it?

Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?n99yxlw0uke
Quote
Rooted in New York hardcore aesthetic, but NOT in traditional hardcore per se, Glassjaw falls under a new breed of bands that pay homage to the traditional chant and response of classic NYHC (New York Hard Core) but without the chants, and without the shout-outs. If you think that makes little sense, so does Glassjaw's non-linear music. And even though Glassjaw doesn't LOOK like an aggro rock band, they very much are. At least on paper. Featuring extraordinary ambidextrous drummer Sammy Siegler (of Gorilla Biscuits/CIV fame), Glassjaw has paired up with producer/entrepreneur Ross Robinson (a key catalyst in the reinvention of the aggro rock sound) to take you on a pummeling that would make Bad Brains and Quicksand proud. Along with Robinson's unorthodox production, Glassjaw places an inordinate emphasis on Daryl Palumbo's somewhat atonal voice putting it at the forefront of the album's mix. His intense delivery wraps around the music, giving it an edge that one wouldn't otherwise expect. Intensely dense, "Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know About Silence" succeeds on many levels. With Palumbo's ability to completely and unequivocally assault the senses with his voice, the subversive riffs of guitarists Beck and Todd Weinstock take songs like "Pretty Lush" and "When One Eight Becomes Two Zeros" to impressive places. With few choruses to speak of, the band literally pile drives the menacing material into the ground. Much like the Deftones, Glassjaw changes gears when you least expect it.

That review's a little nonsensical, but there's not much else out there besides some funny Amazon reviews... it seems like everyone's forgotten about Glassjaw, but I heard they've been kinda influential. To some people, this is as classic as 'Funeral' I've found it hard to find any more really good 'post-hardcore' myself.

I've listened to the majority of this album now (I'm on the second to last song, Youngblood, as I write this) and I have to say this is a pretty solid release. It is different from enter though. They definetly still love their loop pedal, but they seem to not abuse it every 5 seconds and use it more sparingly on this release. They also show more of their quiet side with less of the metal side showing (keyword: less. It's still there.). They still love their math rock though. I definetly think this is worth a listen.

Say Anything ... Is a Real Boy

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?z0izigknlcy
Quote
Despite some of the hype surrounding its release, Say Anything's self-described rock opera ...Is a Real Boy still caught many in the punk scene off-guard, seemingly coming out of nowhere with its theatrical tone and critical, perceptive lyrical makeup. At the helm of the album is the self-conscious 20-something singer/songwriter Max Bemis, who ultimately is Say Anything: he wrote and plays pretty much everything but percussion on the record. The songs were originally written as part of a play, complete with a cast of characters, full story, and spoken interludes. A rise-and-fall plot of sorts, the story line was to be: a band is mediocre until its idealistic frontman (who also suffers from alienation and anxiety in a world of hypocrisy) becomes cursed to spew his innermost thoughts in the form of honest songs that alter the band into wildly popular stars before their own hypocrisy leads to their undoing. And though the proposed story line didn't completely transfer to the album, it's almost too easy to see parallels between the real band and the made-up one, envisioning Bemis (with his own history of anxiety, depression, and paranoia) as the actual hyper-aware lead character. Sure, one could look at this album as self-indulgent, overzealous, and egocentric, but when the songs are as catchy, cutting, and enjoyable as these, it really doesn't matter. The compelling rock of "Belt" starts things off with its thuggish army of background singers, leading into the self-conscious, wry realms of "Woe" (choice lyrics include: "she took pity on me, horizontally, but most likely because of my band"). Urgent drumbeats and harmonizing vocals open the singalong "Alive with the Glory of Love," a song that is so catchy, one almost forgets the dark, almost Holocaust-like nature of the lyrics (a sample line reads "when our city...falls to the axis, they'll search the buildings, collect gold fillings, wallets and rings...you'd look finer with each day in hiding"). Musically, the songs are about as full of life as you'll likely find on any indie/punk release in the early 2000s, and Bemis' great lyrics only add to them. Criticisms on popular culture appear alongside self-deprecating, introspective, and sarcastic lines of love and fear. In "Every Man Has a Molly," Bemis implores kids to spend a lot of money on band merchandise after his girlfriend breaks up with him for writing about her in songs ("because for you I won't ever have rough sex with Molly Connolly again"). At one point, he tells the industry to "go choke on your irony" ("The Futile"), and frustrations with today's scene come to a sharp peak in the confrontational and biting "Admit It!!!," where an empowered Bemis raises two impassioned middle fingers to the elitist crowds that may reject him and his music. Considering the new-school genre of punk that Say Anything is associated with -- and the audience the album is geared toward -- the record is quite ironic. After all, aren't some of the kids eating this music up the same ones with the elitist, condescending personas Bemis was reacting against in the first place? Either way, ...Is a Real Boy comes off as an impressively well-done, multifaceted effort that deserves multiple spins and makes Say Anything truly a band to watch.

Holocaust-"like" is a misnomer because Max is jewish and actually DID base the song on his grandparents' WWII era romance ... knowing that turns a little love song into something alot bigger ("And should they catch us/ and dispatch us/ to those separate work camps")

This is a double album, radically over the top and out of control. I heard this one before the other, just last year, and fell in love in the first minute. If you like pop-punk, post-hardcore, emo, or whatever maligned genre that needs defending, this might be the gigantic epic for you. Like Glassjaw teamed up with Bright Eyes on Broadway. If that doesnt sound cool, you'll probably think this is insufferable! It kinda is. I consider it a guilty pleasure. Thankfully there's a sense of humor & irony too. It's perfect for your inner child and/or drama queen/king.

And I mentioned Bright Eyes cause he put out an album like this kinda stuff once too:

Since I saw him last night, and thought he was awesome...

John Vanderslice - The Life and Death of an American Fourtracker

Quote
With three records in just two years, John Vanderslice is already proving himself to be a prolific songwriter who can put together an admirable concept record. Like Time Travel Is Lonely, The Life and Death of an American Fourtracker tells a story of solitude and, ultimately, the downfall of its protagonist. A boy obsessed with producing home recordings may not sound as sad as someone stuck in Antarctica without communication, but through Vanderslice's lyrics and wonderful arrangements, a powerful misfortune emerges. With help once again from indie rock friends such as Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie, and Beulah, he shows a developing interest in peculiar sounds as well as chamber pop, most notably on "The Mansion," which blossoms into a jubilant chorus. The examination of a recording device in "Me and My 424" establishes a sense that this genuine tale isn't too far from being autobiographical. And given Vanderslice's number of hours spent in his Tiny Telephone studio, it wouldn't be a surprise.

Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence

Man there is a disturbing amount of violently misogynistic lyrical content on this album.

Now, I don't know how serious a criticism this was, but I want to defend this album/band anyway. Yes, there is some graphic imagery in Palumbo's lyrics, but he's hardly glorifying prostitution or violence against women. Most of the themes in EYEWTKAS are about people living scummy, sordid lives, the jealousy and betrayal they go through, as well as the angry reactions to them, and they're conveyed in a lyrical manner which fits the content. Disliking this record on lyrical content alone seems rather like dismissing a book or film for having characters who are "violently misogynistic".

Anyway, this has been a favourite album of mine for a number of years, based on it being a quality piece of post-hardcore (I guess this is the best-fitting "genre", though not really) and Daryl Palumbo's vocal performance being one of the best ever in this style of music. It is fucking angry, and I love it for that. Great upload!

We'll start it out slow, with one album. Let me know if I'm doing it wrong.

The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?wbtdb0bmrmb
Quote
There's an innocence to these songs and their performances that's both charming and unsettling. Hacked-at drumbeats, whacked-around chords, songs that seem to have little or no meter to them ("My Pal Foot Foot," "Who Are Parents," "That Little Sports Car," "I'm So Happy When You're Near" are must-hears) being played on out-of-tune, pawn-shop-quality guitars all converge, creating dissonance and beauty, chaos and tranquility, causing any listener coming to this music to rearrange any pre-existing notions about the relationships between talent, originality, and ability. There is no album you might own that sounds remotely like this one.

That synopsis makes it sound a little more artsy than it really is. It's three sisters who were given recording time by their father, and due to their naivety came up with some crazy (or awful, depending who you are) music.

Ok!  Hi! I've noticed that 50 people have downloaded my previous post of "I dont feel at home in this world anymore" , and i hope everyone has enjoyed it!   That leads me to believe that people like it, or are at least interested... so i will up another interesting compilation from the MISSISSIPPI record label - LIFE IS A PROBLEM.  this record includes righteous religious zealots, toting electric guitars and fighting the devil with rock and roll in the 50's and 60's.  Heavy gospel songs, shouting and howling with the ringing of the devils weapon - the electric guitar.  A MUST LISTEN, if you are into the 'real deal' blues and gospel... everyone i know who has heard this, has been way into it.  check it out!  Freshly ripped from my turntable 320 kpbs, artwork included!
let me know what you think!

Kerosene 454 too! Race is one of my favourite records, despite it being a collection of their first album and early EPs it hangs together extremely well. I always think they're a criminally overlooked band, even if Came By To Kill Me wasn't as brilliant as their earlier work (I never got around to getting a copy of At Zero). The band are superbly locked together, everything seems to come together equally to make their dense, driving sound and they're capable of turning out genuinely epic songs as well as shorter bursts of intensity.

The Seduction of Claude Debussy By art of noise

Quote from: Salon
"Seduction" is a kind of drum 'n' bass homage to the French impressionist composer who, because he prized pure sound and texture over harmony and melody, is considered the father of modern music. It is, unquestionably, a pretentious album, pairing opera with a rap about Baudelaire, a capsule Debussy biography and samples of the composer's work interlaced with digital beats. Electronic music, like pop generally, has an uneasy relationship with highbrow theory -- witness the venom directed at DJ Spooky when he name-checked Derrida -- but "Seduction" is nonetheless a fascinating record that, unlike Spooky's work, matches erudition with beauty and thrilling rhythms.

Coooool. Yeah, i wasnt being cheeky... the 1st Glassjaw CD was given to me as a gift back in 2000, and i normally listen to alot chiller stuff. I didnt think about the genre 'post-hardcore', I just liked it for being, to me at the time, totally unique. I didnt even think of it as a genre piece so ive never really looked for any more stuff like it. So that was kind of a "hint-hint-anybody got something like this?" While the stuff ive posted has been heavy, i'm no expert... it's just some stuff that hasnt been put up yet. And i had a feeling by getting it out there people would start up with 'now HERE's the real shit!' ... which would be awesome!!

Lovin it. Thanks.

Cool, man. I have two albums up on the way (read: an hour or so), but I'll put up the entries for them now then edit them later.

Also, I'd download that Kerosene 454 album, but I don't think I can until I'm done uploading. The download speed is slow at the same time I'm uploading, so I guess I'll save that for later.

In any case:

Jawbox- For Your Own Special Sweetheart

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?ynbdyjhuw2m
Quote from: Andy Kellman of All Music Guide
The screams of a thousand chain wallet-clad indie purists could be heard across the nation once word spread of Jawbox's signing to Atlantic; no band had left the good ship Dischord for a major label prior to Jawbox, so it was seen by more closed-minded types as an unforgivable crime against D.I.Y. If they'd stuck around to hear the record that didn't bear the Dischord logo, they'd hear the band's best record, the one they had always wanted to make. And it wasn't just the label change that made For Your Own Special Sweetheart (a phrase taken from a Barbie product) a transitional record. Adam Wade left the band for art rockers Shudder to Think, and he was replaced on the traps by Zach Barocas.

Even more bristly and blaring than Novelty, Bill Barbot's and J. Robbins' guitars are about as tingly as a jump into a cactus. Their interplay reaches a zenith on Sweetheart. Imagine two Andy Gills in Gang of Four, and you'll see what they're getting at. Though not quite as jagged and dry as Gill, the guitars employ a little distortion to slightly round the edges out. Producer Ted Nicely knew just what to do with the rhythm section -- Kim Coletta's bass is more prominent, and uber-drummer Barochas' complex tom shots run rampant. (He was more likely to emulate Jack DeJohnette than Topper Headon.)

Subject matter includes JG Ballard's Concrete Insland-inspired "Motorist," leaving Robbins wrecked in an ugly part of Chicago; "Savory" examines the objectification of the female species. Otherwise, you need your Jawbox decoder ring to decipher lyrical content. Sonically, the terrain is expansive. Though "Whitney Walks" is stuck at the end of the record, it's relative quietude deserves just as much attention as anything else. Otherwise it's a manic, thrilling ride, nothing short of brilliant.

Rodan- Rusty

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?eg4deghnbbb
Quote from: Ned Raggett of All Music Guide
Whatever scene or geographical associations Rodan dealt with by being from Louisville, KY, in the early '90s, setting those aside and looking at the music straight up reveals one key fact: this was an amazing band, one with clear roots but also one with a sense of its own strong fusion. The group's only full-length release, Rusty may also well derive a fair amount of its attention from what happened with the bandmembers' other projects in the future, Rachel's and June of 44 among them. But from the slow, entrancing start, as "Bible Silver Corner" sets a sweetly mournful tone, Jeff Mueller and Jason Noble's guitar intertwining as Tara Jane O'Neil's bass stands carefully to the fore with the lead melody, this is an album to readily get lost in. The evident variety is another reason to listen, not least because everything is handled so aptly, parts of a greater overall whole. The under three-minute rampage of "Shiner," a seemingly out of nowhere jarring blast of controlled art punk rockabilly chaos, might on the face of it have little to do with the slower and steadier grind of "Gauge," one of two songs where O'Neil takes a vocal turn as well as playing bass. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the album's longest song is its high point, the majestic slam/bang of "The Everyday World of Bodies." Starting with a buried feedback moan before kicking into a tightly wound riff equal parts Funkadelic and Fugazi, it steadily builds up and up in intensity as the song unwinds, harsh, rasped vocals driving everything all the more up and over the top. The occasional slower breaks for air -- for both music and singing -- add not only drama but set the stage for the next build up and explosion.

And here's one I just finished uploading:
Beat Happening- Dreamy

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?dubqzyzznmq
Quote from: Jason Ankeny of All Music Guide
A stunning return to form, Dreamy reprises the dark aggression of the preceding Black Candy, but brings to the table a significantly stronger and more assured collection of songs. Measuring Calvin Johnson's increasingly menacing lead turns with Heather Lewis' more wistful contributions, the album strikes a careful balance between maturity and naļveté; for all of their ragged minimalism, tracks like "Collide," "Revolution Come and Gone," and "Me Untamed" are remarkably sophisticated and assured. And in addition to the newfound sexiness of cuts like "Nancy Sin" and "Red Head Walking," there's also a renewed sense of emotional urgency -- Heather's beguiling "Fortune Cookie Prize" is one of the group's most buoyant love songs, while the mournful "Cry for a Shadow" exposes the tenderness beneath Calvin's tough-guy veneer.

By the by, this one is in .wma format if that ruffles some feathers.

With the help of Shane, I found this:

Texas Tornados - Gringo Lingo

Code: [Select]

Pardon the Rapidshit. Note: the site says "pw: posted_first_at_chocoreve". I haven't finished downloading it yet.

Quote from: various sites
The Texas Tornados: Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, Flaco Jimenez and Augie Meyers.

Predictably, this debut album by a sort of Tex-Mex Traveling Wilburys is a delight. Forty percent of the Sir Douglas Quintet -- Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers -- is represented, along with Freddy Fender and accordionist Flaco Jimenez. The album reflects the differing strains that each brings to the music, from the more pop/country approach of Sahm and Meyers to Fender's bluesy singing and Jimenez's Mexican playing. An all-star project that brings out the best in its members, Texas Tornados is a landmark Tex-Mex album. (The track "Soy de San Luis" won the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Mexican/American Performance.)

Among my favourites:
(Hey Baby) Que Paso
Adios Mexico
Dinero

I grew up listening to the music on this album, and it's one of the reasons that I still will have my old man stop on any radio station that's playing Tejano music when I'm in the car with him anywhere south of Modesto, California. Damn shame that Freddy Fender died within the last year and a half or so.

Did somebody say BOREDOMS? This is my favorite release by them, VISION CREATION NEWSUN, with the bonus CD from the Japanese release.  This album is a swirling mindfuck of tribal drumming and building washes of repetitive strumming and chanting... OOHH it's great!  Was listening to this walking around the other day, and it felt so excited and happy, like my body was lifting off the sidewalk!  I'll add that i was totally sober too!  FANTASTIC! CHECK IT OUT if you haven't heard it.  It's like everything i love about Neu! and Cluster, multiplied and carried out without stopping for air.  There is alot of music here, divided into 3 downloads.  256 Kbps.  Artwork included.

Oh, I'm sorry dude.

But shouldn't iTunes automatically convert .wma files to an appropriate Mac format? I remember it did it once, long when I used to have iTunes.

Oh well. I'll try to get the album re-upped with a more compatible format for all.

I know iTunes can convert WMA to AAC (at least on a Windows machine), but then again, I'm pretty sure it's not a lossless conversion, which is annoying.

some Rhoestatics for your enjoyment. I'm not going to upload all of their albums(they have alot) tonight, because I'm falling asleep as I type this.

Rheostatics are:
Dave Bidini
Tim Vesely
Martin Tielli
Michael Phillip Wojewoda
(also featured Dave Clark and numerous other performers)

Melville

This album is considered one of the most influential Canadian albums of all time. It placed 5th in a poll conducted in 2000. If you are going to get any of the albums get this one first.

Whale Music

This album is chock full of amazing musicianship and incredible songwriting. There is an eerie quality to some of these songs, and a quirky sense of humor to!

The Rheostatics have always had an ability to create the most amazing albums. Lyrically, they're touching, evocative and comical. Instrumentally, they're masters of mood and catchy tunes. This album is one my favorite albums of all time. It's just amazing

To get a bit more technical:
Conversion from any compressed file format into any other file format, compressed or not, induces a lack of quality.  WMA to MP3 is pretty much suck, seeing as how each method of compression compresses differently, so you lose more in a conversion than you would just going from the original source to the specified file type.

If the bitrate for the WMAs is high enough then you may very well turn out okay in the end, but its still an undesirable conversion.

Alright, I searched and saw a sad lack of Scott Walker.

He started his solo career in the 60's making crooner-type music before he became somewhat of a recluse. Since then he's emerged about every 11 years with a new album, and each seems to be getting more and more frightening while remaining beautiful. Dont think these are some 'brutal' metal records though, these are scary in an atmospheric way. Kind of strange croon-y orchestral music. For now I'll upload his more recent material. All of these are BIG recommends.

Tilt (1995)

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?qwiysxudejj
Quote
Tilt was Scott Walker's first album following over a decade of silence, and whatever else he may have done during his exile, brightening his musical horizon was not on the agenda. Indescribably barren and unutterably bleak, Tilt is the wind that buffets the gothic cathedrals of everyone's favorite nightmares.

I couldnt really put it better than that, probably my favorite of these three.

The Drift (2006)

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?em22jeyasis
Quote
The Drift isn't an equally severe leap from Tilt, but it is darker, less arranged, alternately more and less dense, and ultimately more frightening. Maybe it'll make your body temperature drop a few degrees.

This record is by far the most frightening thing I've ever heard.

And Who Shall Go to the Ball? And What Shall Go to the Ball? (2007)

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?1zdiz4ztmfg
No quote on AMG, but this record is kind of different from the other two. And Who Shall Go to the Ball? And What Shall Go to the Ball? is an instrumental soundtrack he composed for a dance troupe.

Oh wow, these Rhoestatics really do have sharp and funny lyrics. It's always a good thing. Trying to remember good bands with witty lyrics.. um um... mclusky, smiths, the fall, ex, gogol bordello, kinks, chumbawamba and boredoms in a way (you don't have to understand the lyrics).
Here's one of the first Boredoms releases uploaded not by me.
Boredoms - boretronix
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?cittgzwmmjnIt's a taste of early boredoms, before the whole V∞ thingy. Not as fun as pop tatari, but still amusing as hell.
I'll upload some OOIOO and b∞s' last 2007 livwe relęse, which is pretty much like an upgraded seadrum. Still, nothing beats actually seeing boredoms live.

Rules:

No hotlinking images or albums. You can rehost images at http://imageshack.us.

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to mediafire.com, in multiple parts if the album is over 100mbs. The reason for this is that we know Mediafire is safe and efficient, and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Also, please do NOT request albums.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page.

Cmon guys, this is the second page, practically in a row where you forgot. These are important. There are a lot of new kids in this thread and if they don't know all the rules, they're gonna mess something up, like use sendspace, or worse, forget the code function. These need to be posted on the top of every page, or as close to it as we can get. I guess the guys with 10 or less posts on this page can be understood since they just got here but the rest of you should know better by know. And the guys with less: please try to remember to post the rules if you get a pagebreak.

Goddamnit, I'm such a douche in this thread. Oh well. I'll upload something tomorrow. Either more scremo or post-rock.

Go with the screamo. You know you want to.

LemonOfPink, that's some nice work. The Drift is undoubtedly the most chilling record I've ever heard in my life, I can only play it rarely and every time it rewards me with a new facet, but I haven't got around to Tilt yet so I'm glad to have it.
