Because this isn't the "free music on demand thread".  Plenty of people offer to upload certain things, but if requests were generally allowed the thread would be flooded with new users requesting every damn thing under the sun.

Actually, I think it would be handier if people stated what they were posting. It's very easy to hit up a site that completely mislabels music - I mean, trust Wikipedia to find you genres and you'll end up with shit like Arctic Monkeys as indie rock or Glittertind as punk.

Wikipedia gets a bad rap.  Sure, for some mainstream stuff like Arctic Monkeys things get a bit dodgy but for anything remotely obscure the articles are generally very informative.  The Dear Hunter article is pretty right-on.  And you get a quicker answer than waiting for someone to post a reply.

Bad Religion and The Ramones are hardly the full extent of the punk spectrum. A lot of The Dismemberment Plan's songs always sounded very punk to me, Survey Says for example. And speaking of punk, this thread needs more powerviolence.



Crossed Out - 1990-1993

CROSSED OUT was in existence for less than three years, during which time they released only one 7" one split 7" and one split 5". Doesn't seem like the sum of one of the most influential bands in extreme hardcore does it? But without question they were. This CD, which is the first official CROSSED OUT discography (and then some), is literally a primer of first wave power violence. CROSSED OUT are a melding of raw thrash, pulverizing grind and bone jarring heaviness that lurches back and forth between blazing and plodding in what seemed, at the time it was recorded, like incongruent randomness but is now easily recognizable as the blueprint for power violence. As I carefully revisited these tunes while writing this review I was reminded of how much the CROSSED OUT influence still resounds in the pv bands of today. I was also astounded to realize that these tunes are as relevant and listenable now as they were when first released. If these songs were new they would still be more intense than 99% of the extreme hardcore currently being released. What that means is this CD is more than just a history lesson or a curious look back at the roots of power violence, it is an album that is gonna kick you upside the head! You are going to want to listen to this CD for what it is, not for what it represents. Hell this is so vicious that when I put it on my music shelf all the other hardcore and metal CDs started to cry for their mommy.

Danava - Unonou

It's psychedelic rock with heavy and progressive overtones, and vocals that are half Ozzy, half Hawkwind.  I really like it.  Get it if you enjoyed Titan, Earthless, or any of the other proggy heavy-psych bands I've upped.

I just thought I'd mention that I typically listen to all the stuff I get from this thread in Audiosurf first.  And wouldn't you know, your uploads are the most fun.

"Shadow Music" was a broad term given to the Thai guitar pop movement of the 1960s and the groups that came out of it -- all under the profound influence of early Western rock and roll. British instrumental wonders The Shadows (as in Cliff Richards & The Shadows) were the origin of the genre's title -- also coined "Wong Shadow" or early Thai "string" music. Shadow records were often marketed as "Thai Modernized Music" which it was in the truest sense. Traditional Thai melodies were given the Shadow treatment -- incorporating rock, surf, a-go-go, exotica, soul, blues, Latin and otherworldly styles of the times. Inventive compositions and instrumental genius meet the occasional odd vocal arrangement and the results range from plaintive guitar and organ-driven lullabies to full-blown electric garage folk-psychedelia! Featured on this collection are a handful of the leading recorded artists from the time; P.M. Pocket Music, The Son of P.M., P.M.7, Jupiter and Johnny Guitar. Throughout the 1960s, these groups forged a unique and highly self-referential Thai sound. In a press handout that accompanied the original release of Pere Ubu's Cloudland, David Thomas quipped "We'd never been asked to write a pop record before. I guess it never occurred to anyone." Given the sonic Dadaism of much of Pere Ubu's work, what's most startling is not that it took so long for someone to suggest they make a pop record but that they were able to comply so successfully. Lyrically, Cloudland finds Ubu moving cautiously from their passionate defense of the Midwest's industrial wastelands to a look at the broad plains that lurked elsewhere, as if they were looking for sunnier climes like many other denizens of the Rust Belt and finding many strange, troubling and wonderful things in their new surroundings. Ultimately, Cloudland showed that however much you dressed up Pere Ubu's music, their heart and soul would show through, and that is a very good thing. [In 2007, Mercury Records reissued Cloudland in a new remastered edition created with the input of the band. Thomas is certainly bouncing off the walls, along with the rest of his merry band. Evidently they must have thought, in a fit of crazed hindsight, that 1978's innovative (and sufficiently weird) Dub Housing sounded too poppy. Bad Brains - Bad Brains

For fans of hardcore, many would agree that the holy grail of the genre is Bad Brains' self-titled album, originally released back in 1982 as a cassette-only release on ROIR. The ensuing years after its initial release haven't dulled the album's fury and rage in the least, and it's still impressive how the band can switch gears from red-hot hardcore to cool reggae dubs in the blink of an eye. All the classics are here: "Sailin' On," "Banned in D.C.," "Pay to Cum," "Right Brigade," as well as one of their strongest reggae tunes, "I Luv I Jah." The back of the album boasts a quote from the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, which sums up the proceedings simply, "the best punk/hardcore album of all time." [Although Bad Brains was available on CD on the now-defunct In Effect label in the late '80s (then titled Attitude: The ROIR Sessions with a different album cover), it's since been remastered and re-released with its original cover, as well as an untitled bonus track added at the end.]

Gang Of Four - Entertainment

Entertainment! is one of those records where germs of influence can be traced through many genres and countless bands, both favorably and unfavorably. From groups whose awareness of genealogy spreads wide enough to openly acknowledge Gang of Four's influence (Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine), to those not in touch with their ancestry enough to realize it (rap-metal, some indie rock) -- all have appropriated elements of their forefathers' trailblazing contribution. Its vaguely funky rhythmic twitch, its pungent, pointillistic guitar stoccados, and its spoken/shouted vocals have all been picked up by many. Lyrically, the album was apart from many of the day, and it still is. The band rants at revisionist history in "Not Great Men" ("No weak men in the books at home"), self-serving media and politicians in "I Found That Essence Rare" ("The last thing they'll ever do?/Act in your interest"), and sexual politics in "Damaged Goods" ("You said you're cheap but you're too much"). Though the brilliance of the record thrives on the faster material -- especially the febrile first side -- a true highlight amongst highlights is the closing "Anthrax," full of barely controlled feedback squalls and moans. It's nearly psychedelic, something post-punk and new wave were never known for. With a slight death rattle and plodding bass rumble, Jon King equates love with disease and admits to feeling "like a beetle on its back." In the background, Andy Gill speaks in monotone of why Gang of Four doesn't do love songs. Subversive records of any ilk don't get any stronger, influential, or exciting than this.

Les Savy Fav - Let's Stay Friends

After a six-year break due to a severe case of writer's block, wild-hearted frontman Tim Harrington and his boys have upped the ante upon return with Let's Stay Friends, an excellent record that marks a dramatic stylistic departure for Les Savy Fav. Here, they continue building upon their foundation, which is writing deceptively solid post-hardcore songs with a heavy spattering of angular influence, while leaning forward into a more polished territory of crisp, embellished production. This record is a logical progression from Go Forth, an album that showed the group beginning to stray from their hardcore roots, and here they masterfully blanket their incendiary raw power with touches of piano, horns, dub delays, and other subtle dabs of headphone candy. LSV enlisted the help of some choice studio experts to provide these sugary additives, namely vocalists Eleanor Friedberger (the Fiery Furnaces), Toko Yasuda (Enon), and Nick Thorburn (the Unicorns), with appearances by Emily Haines (Metric) on piano and Joe Plummer (the Black Heart Procession) and Fred Armisen on drums. It's an all-star cast of players, and the band sounds tighter than ever as they propel Harrington's trademark coarse yelp through the distortion of an album filled with potential singles. On "Slugs in the Shrubs" and "The Equestrian" he howls feverishly alongside razor-sharp guitar lines, and then switches to a swooning falsetto in the Spoon-ish numbers "The Year Before the Year 2000" and "Patty Lee." Purists may miss the raw intensity of the band's earlier years, but it's hard to deny that this is simply a great, melody-driven record that crosses over, not quite to the extremity of, say, the Clash's Combat Rock but more like the Dismemberment Plan's Change, into a more stylistic and hook-driven world while maintaining the aggressive edge that makes them such a likeable force. Walking that line is a tightrope act, but Let's Stay Friends does so flawlessly, all the while solidifying that these guys are some of the best in the biz when it comes to crafting angular, idiosyncratic pop tunes -- and that's saying a lot when you go down the lengthy checklist of Gang of Four-referencing, post-hardcore bands that have formed in the past decade. This album was well worth the wait and should win over some new fans and please the old ones too. Best of show.

Paint It Black - Paradise

Paint It Black continue to kick the old-school hardcore on their Jade Tree release, Paradise. This time around, though, Paint It Black release a lot of the tension throughout the album with a reliance on melodic sensibilities -- guitar and vocal lines with interesting half-time chumpdowns -- which may be a result of Paradise being produced and recorded by J. Robbins. These are introspective songs of identity against a backdrop of global breakdown and corporate manipulation. Paint It Black offer up fast beats, thick chords, and passionate lyrics on Paradise, and shine on tracks with vocal exchanges between Dan Yemin and Andy Nelson, such as "Pink Slip," "Athiests in Foxholes," and "Labor Day." Paint It Black have always had a good sense of keeping the good fight going with passion and rage in their lyrics and delivery, while mixing in memorable musical elements. Paradise will make you get up, think about your situation, and fight for better days.

Pulp - Different Class

After years of obscurity, Pulp shot to stardom in Britain with 1994's His 'n' Hers. By the time Different Class was released at the end of October 1995, the band, particularly lead singer Jarvis Cocker, were genuine British superstars, with two number two singles and a triumphant last-minute performance at Glastonbury under their belts, as well as one tabloid scandal. On the heels of such excitement, anticipation for Different Class ran high, and not only does it deliver, it blows away all their previous albums, including the fine His 'n' Hers. Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all -- it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here. Not only are the melodies and hooks significantly catchier and more immediate, the music explores more territory. From the faux-show tune romp of the anthemic opener "Mis-Shapes" and the glitzy, gaudy stomp of "Disco 2000" (complete with a nicked riff from Laura Branigan's "Gloria") to the aching ballad "Underwear" and the startling sexual menace of "I Spy," Pulp construct a diverse, appealing album around the same basic sound. Similarly, Jarvis Cocker's lyrics take two themes, sex and social class, and explore a number of different avenues in bitingly clever ways. As well as perfectly capturing the behavior of his characters, Cocker grasps the nuances of language, creating a dense portrait of suburban and working-class life. All of his sex songs are compassionate, while the subtle satire of "Sorted for E's & Wizz" is affectionate, but the best moment on the album is the hit single "Common People," about a rich girl who gets off by slumming with the lower class. Coming from Cocker, who made secondhand clothes and music glamorous, the song is undeniably affecting and exciting, much like Different Class itself.

Right Away Great Captain!- The Bitter End LP

The Bitter End is the first release from Andy Hull's solo project, Right Away, Great Captain. The album was recorded in 3 days near Bastian, VA in August of 2006. It is a concept record focusing on a 1600's sailor at sea for 3 years. Each song being a journal entry to his family at home or his captain.

Andy Hull is quite possibly one of the best new songwriters in the past few years. Sure, he's not going to make Rolling Stone as the next Bright Eyes or Dylan, and Pitchfork would probably write him off quicker than they would eat up the new Of Montreal album. Hull is as quiet as Sam Beam and possibly as metaphoric while possessing the simplicity of his friends and peers Jesse Lacey and Kevin Devine. With his main project, Manchester Orchestra, most can tell how Hull and Co. take simple song structures and make it into something big and something real. Right Away, Great Captain! is not going to be Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea or The Microphones's The Glow Pt.2, but the raw underlining is present.

Electric Wizard is one of the few bands that has been able to genuinely lay claim to the title of "heaviest band in the world" at some point in its history.  These three albums (OK, technically Supercoven is an EP, I think) make this claim indisputable.  This is MONSTROUSLY heavy doom, with a considerable amount of psychedelia swirled into the mix.  If you ever want to know what "heavy" really means, listen to these three albums.  They are magnificent.

I first found out about this band through some research I was doing about anarchy and squatting communities. Nausea was involved in New York City's squatting community and they use both female and male vocals. They were and still are one of the most influential New York City punk bands ever and among the first bands to combine raw punk, metal and intense socio-political lyrics. Oh and the female singer is a total hottie in my opinion,but that really doesn't mean anything

Hey guys, this is my first contribution to this utterly amazing thread. Hopefully it lives up to it.

Lifter Puller-Soft Rock

Featuring almost everything the band ever released excluding the Fiestas + Fiascos record, Lifter Puller's Soft Rock includes 40 songs, all of them ranging from really great to brilliant. Lifter Puller, whose members also liked to call themselves Lftr Pllr, was a mostly unsung Minneapolis band with distinctive and uniformly excellent output. Singer/guitarist Craig Finn had a throaty, unique voice and wrote songs with plenty of lyrical imagery -- compelling stories with no choruses. They tended toward the romantic, though of the puking-in-the-backseat-of-a-car-style romanticism. Soft Rock includes their self-titled debut in 1996 right up to their last recordings in 2000 before they broke up. Their most recent stuff is the best, with truly inspired music and words. Even if you've never heard of them before and maybe wouldn't tend to be interested in a band that no longer exists and remained fairly obscure, this two-CD set is highly recommended and can be enjoyed by folks with all sorts of musical tastes.

For those of you who might not know, Craig Finn and Lifter Puller bassist Tad Kubler later formed The Hold Steady (with Kubler on guitar). This pretty much sounds like THS if they were a post-punk band with even more of an interest in talking about kids on drugs.

It is loved and hated for its “oddness” and “obscurity.” Its chances in the marketplace were martyred by its spotty availability, and Thompson has admitted to feeling wounded by the trashing it received. Attaining saintly lost-classic status won it a place in the hearts of many music geeks, but their esteem may have done further disservice to the album, as they tend to celebrate how “weird” it is, which preserves its rarification since, I imagine, a throng of potential listeners won’t spin it, fearing that they lack the patience to withstand its eccentricity. My head is full of storied albums, but Corky’s Debt to His Father is the only record I can think of that got so unjustly exiled by both its detractors and its celebrants.

Gang Of Four - Entertainment

Entertainment! is one of those records where germs of influence can be traced through many genres and countless bands, both favorably and unfavorably. From groups whose awareness of genealogy spreads wide enough to openly acknowledge Gang of Four's influence (Fugazi, Rage Against the Machine), to those not in touch with their ancestry enough to realize it (rap-metal, some indie rock) -- all have appropriated elements of their forefathers' trailblazing contribution. Its vaguely funky rhythmic twitch, its pungent, pointillistic guitar stoccados, and its spoken/shouted vocals have all been picked up by many. Lyrically, the album was apart from many of the day, and it still is. The band rants at revisionist history in "Not Great Men" ("No weak men in the books at home"), self-serving media and politicians in "I Found That Essence Rare" ("The last thing they'll ever do?/Act in your interest"), and sexual politics in "Damaged Goods" ("You said you're cheap but you're too much"). Though the brilliance of the record thrives on the faster material -- especially the febrile first side -- a true highlight amongst highlights is the closing "Anthrax," full of barely controlled feedback squalls and moans. It's nearly psychedelic, something post-punk and new wave were never known for. With a slight death rattle and plodding bass rumble, Jon King equates love with disease and admits to feeling "like a beetle on its back." In the background, Andy Gill speaks in monotone of why Gang of Four doesn't do love songs. Subversive records of any ilk don't get any stronger, influential, or exciting than this.

Fuck. Yes. I'm so glad you uploaded this. I wish I still had their greatest hits with 2nd disc of remixes by other bands. It was so damn cool.

For those who've never heard of him, he taught George Harrison to play the Sitar and is also the father of Nora Jones. But that aside, he's hella awesome on the Sitar. As the title implies this is from the original Woodstock, and I can't stress enough how great this is. Just download it, you'll be happy about it.

His nephew Ananda Shankar is also pretty cool, but more electronic. Though I don't have any of his music.
