Peter Bjorn and John - Falling Out

Around this time last year I was obsessed with PB&J's album Writer's Block and now I'm obsessed with this one. I think I like this one more than WB and that album is one I would consider a favorite of all-time! That is how good Falling Out is, especially since it contains songs like "Big Black Coffin", and cover of the Concretes' "Teen Love", and also "Tailormade", which I think is the most gorgeous thing they've ever done. Anyway, our favorite Swedish friends have an instrumental album out in the fall of this year, which should be interesting. And good.

Quote from: amg
Peter Bjorn and John are three guys from Stockholm who have a knack for fine power pop-influenced and new wave-tinged guitar pop. Peter handles the vocals and guitars, John the drums, and Bjorn mans the bass and various keyboards; between them they have created a fresh and exciting record that is packed with great songs and intriguing sounds. Falling Out is their American debut and it sounds like the work of a band that has been perfecting its sound for years (as they in fact have since 1999). Their tunes are colored by glockenspiels, Speak & Spells, zithers, omnichords, and cheap synths and built on wonderfully inventive and heartfelt arrangements. Beneath the rich and varied sounds are some truly powerful songs. The up-tempo tracks are tense and tough, and Peter's rasping and heart-on-sleeve vocals ride the melodies like a Joe Strummer who was grounded in pop rather than punk. Tracks like "Far Away, by My Side," the surging "It Beats Me Every Time," and "Money" clatter and soar and stick to you like marmalade. Connect the dots and you end up at the New Pornographers or Spoon. As fine as these tracks are, the soul of the record is in the ballads, and that soul has a darkness that comes only from heartbreak. "Does It Matter Now" oozes pain and sports a wrenching guitar-destroying climax. "All Those Expectations" builds from calm acoustic balladry to devastating passages of jagged guitars and mournful harmonica. "Big Black Coffin" is the centerpiece of the album, a big ballad complete with magisterial horns. The rising and falling dynamics and Peter's aching vocals place the song in epic-ville, not far from Wilco if Wilco were three pop-loving Swedes with a Spector influence and a Springsteen heart. Songs like that and "Tailormade," another track that will leave you slack-jawed at the sheer power, place them very close to the best indie rock -- no, just plain music -- being made in 2005. More punk than the Concretes, less frantic than the Shout out Louds, as catchy as the most tuneful of the U.K. post-post-post-punk merchants, Falling Out firmly establishes Peter Bjorn and John as a group to watch out for. Strike that. They are a band that has arrived in all senses of the word.

This reminds me of the Mars Volta even if they dont sound exactly alike... a little emo, a little indie, a little classical & opera ... pretty over the top if you're into that sorta thing. Act II is even crazier.

Everyone should download that Venetian Snares album. It's really excellent/fairly brain melting.

Amen. Rossz is one of the finest albums ever. "kétsarkú mozgalom" and the "gloomy sunday" remix are just amazing.

Cruyff In The Bedroom - Saudargia

I can't find a review (it was just released in Japan), but needless to say, I think Cruyff In The Bedroom are the best shoegaze band out there right now, and this new album might be their best yet.

Street Dogs - Savin Hill

Quote
Street Dogs don't put on airs. They barely put on their shirts. Savin Hill is a Boston punk record through and through, its blue-collar heart soaked in beer and blood of foe. There's a community feel here, from its titular name-check of an area in Dorchester to the makeup of the band and their special guests. Ex-Dropkick Murphys Mike McColgan and Jeff Erna (vocals and drums, respectively) join former Bruisers Rob Guidotti and bassist Johnny Rioux in Street Dogs, and Savin Hill features guest shots from Boston regulars like Bosstones Dicky Barrett and Joe Sirois and Ken Casey and Al Barr of Dropkicks. There are similarities to Do or Die, that band's raucous debut -- McColgan's heartfelt bellow is instantly recognizable, and the music often sticks similarly to tried and true street punk provocation. But the opening title track makes it quite clear that Savin is a record about the Street Dogs' own experiences, hopes, and anger -- not some sort of sequel to DKM. "Cut Down on the 12th" and "Justifiable Fisticuffs" encourage singing and slinging of pints over ringing riffs and choppy percussion, and "Don't Preach to Me" reaches way back to 1977 for a rant against hoity-toity celebrity liberalism. (Speaking of 1977, Street Dogs rip into Sham 69's "Borstal Breakout" with a "Boston Version" subtitle) But while fists and drinks are crucial to this crew, brotherhood and neighborhood ties run as deep as Savin Hill's unstoppable melodies. "Jakes" reflects on McColgan's pride over his Boston Fire Department day job, and "Stand Up" is a bootstraps-pulling rocker complete with a round of "Hey! Hey! Hey!"s. But it's "Fighter" that best represents Street Dogs. As a bittersweet tribute to a fallen comrade, it manages to tie together faith, devotion, drinking, fighting, and working-class ideals in just over three minutes of stinging, hooky punk revivalism.

Thanks. I think I've posted all of their releases, except the "Young And Blind" b-side collection. I can't track it down anywhere.

There's like three other EPs, but most of what was on those is on "Young And Blind".

A Concise history of the SUN CITY GIRLS

well, I have decided to undertake the grand task of uploading 2.5 gigs  worth (which barely scratches the surface of the entire discography, but will serve as an ample introduction to the  band
Quote
The Sun City Girls were a United States experimental rock band formed in Phoenix, Arizona in 1982. The members were Alan Bishop (bass guitar, vocals), his brother Richard Bishop (guitar, piano), and the late Charles Gocher (drums). Their name was inspired by Sun City, Arizona, an Arizona retirement community.

They found little mainstream success (and never really sought any), but they continue to inspire a devoted cult following and have recorded numerous critically acclaimed albums, released in small editions by labels like Placebo, Majora, Eclipse Records, Amarillo Records, and their own Abduction imprint. Critic Steve Leggett writes, "Throughout its history SCG has remained a challenging, unpredictable, and eclectic musical unit, operating outside the commercially driven aspirations of the mainstream recording industry, and the group has become somewhat of a beacon to independent musicians and artists everywhere."[1] Writing in the Village Voice, Ted Hendrickson argues, "They've never made any sense, conventionally speaking, and that's what makes them fun."[2]
-crappy wiki entry on band

All the albums I will be posting are high quality rips and include artwork....this will take a few days hope you enjoy--many thanks go to several internet sources for uploading these elsewhere-The Sun City Girls have an incredibly large and hard to find discography with many of their albums selling for inflated and unrealistic prices making it difficult for the uninitiated so I hope that this helps to spread the word and sounds of one of America's most enduring "Indie" acts who have consistently evolved and mutated over the years -This is not going to be everyone's cup tea-if you are easily swayed to buy music from TV commercials this might eat your entire music collection and shit out pieces of mp3 bone while rabidly dry humping your Morrisey singles into prison sex submission

Death Cab for Cutie - Narrow Stairs

April Fools?

"On March 31, a fake version of the album was "leaked" on various torrent sites as an April Fool's prank with only "I Will Possess Your Heart" correct of all the Narrow Stairs songs named. The rest of the songs were by German indie band Velveteen, but due to the two bands having a very similar sound, some fans weren't sure at first if the files were in fact fake."

I'm the April Fool's Day version of the Grinch.  I just hate it.  I hate knowing that every single thing I see today will be some half-assed attempt at humor (YouTube's rickrolling thing was just retarded).

And I can't help but wonder, what if one April Fool's Day something actually really bad happens and nobody believes it?  A friend of mine had their car stolen today.  HA HA.

Hi, I've been reading this thread for quite a while and the pere ubu post made me register to say "hell yeah, more pere ubu!"
I'm uploading felt and family fodder right now.
And a couple more things off my chest: animal collective is NOT experimental music and belle and sebastian is NOT twee-pop.

"Experimental" isn't a genre, and despite my general ambivalence toward AC, they do incorporate elements of experimentality in their music.

Just as Belle and Sebastian incorporate elements of twee and pop.  To deny that is to sound like an April Fool's Troll.

Okay, here it is.
Felt - Forever Breathes the Lonely Word
Felt is probably one of the best bands of the 80s and arguable the most underrated. I strongly advise those poor demented souls who believe that b&s is twee-shitpop download Felt and find out where b&s really took off.

Your presence would be justified better by being less of a dick.

Just sayin', man.  You have good taste in music but three's no need to be throwing superlatives around like "twee-shitpop".  There is a lot of good twee-based music out there and if you like Belle and Sebastian I can't imagine how you don't like any twee unless you just haven't heard much of it.

if experimental isn't a genre, then what does fantomas and mr. bungle fall into?

well, pretty much any mike patton project, save for lovage and stuff.

also, with the sun city girls records. which is your personal favourite? all of these albums are a little overwhelming. :P

330,003 Crossdressers from Beyond the Rig Veda is the LP everyone tells people to listen to and that seems to be the favored one amongst a large segment of fans ( I will be upping a remastered version of that later tonight or tomorrow) Its hard to say which is a favorite-when I get in the mood for the Sun City Girls it tends to be a multi album cycle--I recommend diving into one because chances are if something catches your ear on that release you will be inclined to listen to more but for the sake of popularity and whats been uploaded today try Dawn of the Devi it is a close second to being a top recommended album by them so it migh tbe an easy jumping point....I suppose it is a bit overwhelming but I also know how incredibly hard it is to find some of these so I am hoping long time fans might have reason to smile as well

Honey, hate to burst your bubble, but you are closer to "teenage" and "hipster" than you might think.  Granted I am young as well.  It probably might be a good idea to have a basis for your opinion instead of just throwing bits if incorrect information about.  It is just kind of darshy to say "HAH YOUR MUSIC SUCKS", not give any reasoning behind it, and just leave it at that.  Good for you that you have good taste in music, so do a lot of us in here.

P.S.
You should possibly look up Twee before making comments like "I've been listening to b&s for years before that twee-word even started circulating".  B&S formed in 1996...Twee is not something that started circulating after that point.  It was around even ten years prior.

Belle & Sebastian - Books
A double A-side, absolute must-have. The first track is highly unusual for b&s, that makes it even more precious.

Umm, I absolutely love Vaselines, the other bands you mentioned are definitely not my piece of cake, esp cub. Anyway, I never happened to hear the term twee-pop before 00s if that's important.
Regarding Vaselines, back then we used to call it avant-pop or something like that, having dEUS as a perfect example of an avant-pop band.  Who are releasing a new album soon by the way. Which will probably suck, at least the first singles do.B&S are also coming from baroque pop or as it is now called chamber-pop, which sounds kinda nicer to me.

Anyway, it doesn't matter, does it.

if experimental isn't a genre, then what does fantomas and mr. bungle fall into?

well, pretty much any mike patton project, save for lovage and stuff.

also, with the sun city girls records. which is your personal favourite? all of these albums are a little overwhelming. :P
330,003 Crossdressers from Beyond the Rig Veda is the LP everyone tells people to listen to and that seems to be the favored one amongst a large segment of fans ( I will be upping a remastered version of that later tonight or tomorrow) Its hard to say which is a favorite-when I get in the mood for the Sun City Girls it tends to be a multi album cycle--I recommend diving into one because chances are if something catches your ear on that release you will be inclined to listen to more but for the sake of popularity and whats been uploaded today try Dawn of the Devi it is a close second to being a top recommended album by them so it migh tbe an easy jumping point....I suppose it is a bit overwhelming but I also know how incredibly hard it is to find some of these so I am hoping long time fans might have reason to smile as well

thanks, downloading now.

Regarding Vaselines, back then we used to call it avant-pop or something like that

Back then?  Dude you're 22!  The Vaselines were active when you were 1 or 2 years old!  Even I'm not old enough that I listened to them when they were active, I listened to them mostly post-'94.  When you were eight!

And it was called twee.

Just admit you are wrong and don't let this be the way everyone remembers your appearance on the forum.  Seriously, "twee" has been around for roughly 22 years.  You can't backpedal your way around that.  It's an actual fact.

Oh god, by "back then" I obviously meant the 90s. I do know when they appeared and disbanded, mind you.
Okay, sorry, I guess I missed the origin of that twee thingy in cold scary Russia.

All this talk of twee and no mention of The Softies, it's a goddamned crime

The Softies - It's Love

Quote
A gorgeously melancholy debut, It's Love forgoes the ebullient love-rock of singer/guitarist Rose Melberg's tenure with Tiger Trap to focus on skeletal guitar/harmony duets with partner Jen Sbragia; simple and beautiful, tracks like "I Love You More," "Charms Around Your Wrist" and "Fragile, Don't Crush" are as sweet as cotton candy -- pure indie-pop perfection. Bonus points for the wonderful cover of Talulah Gosh's "I Can't Get No Satisfaction (Thank God)."

The Softies - Holiday In Rhode Island

Quote
On Holiday in Rhode Island, the Softies continue their simple and sweet variety of heart-on-their-sleeve indie pop. On "Sleep Away Your Troubles," the melody between Rose Melberg and Jen Sbragia showcases the duo's simple and refreshing instrumentation and musical approach. The songs remain introspective and focused on the frailties of human relationships. The band never bought into the standard indie pop sound, instead focusing on a storytelling approach, rarely singing much above a hushed whisper. Even somber songs like "These Sad Times" and "The Beginning of the End" retain dashes of optimism intertwined with the overall melancholy mood of the songs. The duo's wistful songs like "Me and the Bees" and the title track create a poignant and mellow environment that few bands are able to match. Melberg's soft and tender vocals lead the way on all of the tracks. With this disc, Melberg solidified herself as one of the most disarming vocalists in the indie scene.

Jackie keeps beating me.  :P

I suppose that, no, it doesn't really matter that you are wrong...we just don't like it when people are ill-informed and kind of jerky about it.  I really just wanted to point out that it was incorrect information because to some of us, when it comes to the discussion of things we love, we like to be accurate.  I don't personally want to give someone bad information, even inadvertently.

coldenginelogic, you don't have to post the entire discography. I was going to put up Torch of the Mystics and Dante's Disneyland Inferno tonight.

I was going to upload these to mediafire.
I could instead give out sharebee links for the entire discography, which was posted a while ago on the atease forums. I'm sure they still work. I definitely don't own the SCG's discography myself because of their large back catalogue.
So, I could give out the links for every album, as long as sharebee is okay with those who care.

Boredoms - live in sunflancisco
This is a short drums-only 2-song ep. Super roots 9 is another notable live album, which is also pretty amazing, but on a whole bigger scale.

Simply stunning, my second favourite ex album after dizzy spells. Also, Yann Tiersen covered state of shock from this album, which is available on his "on tour" album. Ex's latest LP "turn" is also gorgeous, but I forgot it in Moscow, so hint hint.

Hey ohwellwhatever I suggest fixing that picture (by hosting it from your own photobucket account) before people start yelling rules at you.

Also, Sun City Girls is awesome, thanks.

Protest the Hero - Fortress

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?1ktmwgxco2m
Quote
Protest the Hero's Fortress owes much of its sound to progressive metal, even if its post-hardcore and punk metal influences are still evident. The new sound is detectable as soon as vocalist Rody Walker begins singing on the opening song, "Bloodmeat," when an initial quick burst of a verse gives way to chorus that floats over pounding rhythms and a background string section. The piece sets the tone for what is to come; Fortress is just as aggressive and intense as the band's debut album, Kezia, but not as dark, even as Walker shifts between operatic melodies and guttural grunts and screams. (This happens frequently throughout Fortress, and the singer is adept at both.) Both albums carry a theme throughout -- Kezia is a "situationist requiem," according to the band, while Fortress is ostensibly about goddess worship -- but the latter is more consistent in its presentation. Whereas Kezia concentrated more on Protest the Hero's achieving technical expertise, Fortress is from a band whose abilities have caught up with their vision. The album is deeper, stronger, more original, and consequently more fun. More risks are taken, from the nearly hidden horns on "The Dissentience" to the shimmering piano solo at the beginning of "Sequoia Throne" and the playful interlude that bridges "Palms Read" and "Limb from Limb." Protest the Hero is having fun with their creativity here, and Fortress is a better album for it. However, it all goes by a bit too quickly -- the songs may be epic, but the entire album is pounding and frantic. What should be a marathon is conducted at a sprinting pace, and if there's any complaint, it's that there is no time to slow down and appreciate how far Protest the Hero has come since their debut album. There are plenty of interesting things that take place on Fortress, but it may take repeated listens to take it all in.

Freshly ripped from my turntable!  320 kbps, artwork included.  Awesome collection of american immigrant songs from 1927-1948.   a little of everything on this one!  this is my first post, and so i thought i would up my newest purchase from the record shop.  I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore is a Mississippi records release, which pretty much assures it's excellence (in my opinion)    Based on the response of this one i will up some more for all those interested!  ENJOY!
