The minimalist folk sounds of The Accidental have a very soothing quality and listening to There Were Wolves is a gently moving experience that deserves lots of repetition. Released in April of 2008, There Were Wolves is a gorgeous collection of soft songs that meld together with dreamy precision to create a record that conjures notions of Iron & Wine.

The Accidental, as the name might suggest, came together almost by accident. Starting with Stephen Cracknell (Memory Band) and Sam Genders (Tunng), the UK-based band came together as the result of an assortment of meanderings and chance encounters.

Genders and Cracknell first met at the Green Man festival and decided to mail each other CDs back and forth. Another member, Hannah Caughlin (The Bicycle Thieves), stumbled into the eventual quartet through the happy providence of being introduced to Cracknell as a potential housemate. The fourth member, Liam Bailey joined after turning up at a Memory Band gig.

The result of such advantageous occurrences is a band whose sound feels as natural and unintentional as the way the group came together. With a firm belief in the freedom of the music, The Accidental set upon making There Were Wolves via a PC with the help of the members' friends and a solid musical sense as the map to buried musical treasure.

There Were Wolves matches the feel of the creation, unfolding merrily as though a group of friends is sitting around strumming and piecing together songs in your basement. Despite fitting firmly in the folk genre, The Accidental is undaunted by carrying out musical tests and mischievously experiments with broad textures, strings, and sound effects all through the course of the record.

Each member of the band sings parts on There Were Wolves, adding to the freer feel of the album and creating a luxuriant, broad sound. With an immensely creative introduction in “Knock, Knock,” which was remixed by Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and given a shadowy electronic music character, the album takes off with a vibe that MOJO calls “folktronica.”

The Accidental keeps things pretty basic despite the genre-splicing adventurism, allowing things to flow through the basic folk paces on tracks like the sound-effect-laden “Jaw of a Whale” and the sway of “Illuminated Red.”

There are two instrumentals (“Slice Open the Day” and “The Killing Floor”). Both tracks unfold beautifully like sun poking through a window’s gossamer curtains. The quality of the quartet’s exquisite compositions is evident on these tracks, with swirling instruments and strings delivering nothing sort of pure atmospheric heaven.

The Accidental’s There Were Wolves is a stunning and lush recording punctuated by pleasant compositions, delicate melodies, and the gorgeous work of all four vocalists. It is an incredible folk record and contains some of the best music I’ve heard all year.

I'm forgetting who offered it... but I would certainly downloaded any "smart metal".
I uploaded pretty much all of Agalloch a while back, except the two early demos and the split disk, because I don't have those.  Funny enough, "Tomorrow Will Never Come" has one 1 download, and is by far my least downloaded upload.
You can still upload if you'd like, help bring it to the attention of those that may have missed it, but a search for Agalloch should bring it up.

Anyway, the other bands sound great.

I feel like I should upload something soon, so I will.

The only sloan I have ever listened to is the Bonus Party CD, and now this. I don't think I am doing this "listen to sloan" thing right.

You need to listen to Smeared and Between the Bridges.  They're in here, might still work.

Quote from: Cokemachineglow
So if HEALTH’s 2007 self-titled debut was rock conceived in a lonely cell, occasionally bashing itself against the walls, the echo of its nihilistic grunts serving as its only conversation, this is when it downs some ketamine and tries to make friends with itself (unsuccessfully). But a journey to the back of one’s skull can be lonely, so HEALTH have enlisted the aid of a small army of their synth-wielding comrades to transform the shrieking guitars and tribal minimalism of their debut into a frantic race through a pastel wonderland.

It may take a careful ear to discern this as an album comprised of remixes of “all the hits” from HEALTH’s debut (which may be the point really). At times, HEALTH’s skeleton is almost completely obscured, vaguely familiar elements cropping up briefly and quickly dissolving into the ever-moving compositions, grains of sand in a much larger pane of stained glass. But many of the synthesized elements that alternately frame and displace HEALTH’s instrumentation and vocals are arguably better than anything on HEALTH; no small feat, at that. The fluorescent splashes on Nosaj Thing’s “Tabloid Sores” are a force in and of themselves, accented only by the disembodied intonations of the original. A handful of other tracks take this approach and could be classified as re-imaginings more than remixes (which may be the point, again).

In this vein, DISCO ventures pretty far down the rabbit hole; the surrealist bent is apparent from the get-go. For the first of Acid Girls’ reworking of “Triceratops,” backwards drums escalate, washing over repetitious, ghostly vocals that transform into a head-splitting guitar riff soon to be displaced by a bleeding, hallucinogenic fuzz, then stiffening and spiraling into catastrophic euphoria before collapsing in a heap of exhaustion: a manic-depressive episode condensed into a five-minute tantrum. The opener serves as a microcosm of the whole album—that is, its soup sporadically tempers aggressive propulsion with sparser, meditative sections to allow heart rates to lessen, building anticipation for the next bit of catharsis. DISCO‘s appeal is built on such release, and though its frantic pace is the essential component of its success, a track like C.L.A.W.S.’s remix of “Lost Time,” composed solely of clipped vocals, spacey drums, and ambient blips, provides the album with crucial contrast, ensuring it doesn’t combust and disintegrate before the last cut. So, yes, Pink Skull’s “Heaven” is the foil that makes all this explosive exigency so dazzlingly confrontational, that makes Pictureplane’s version of “Lost Time” seem even more vivacious in comparison. Most of the songs here feel insistent because they just fucking are.

For all its maximalist glory, DISCO is remarkably nuanced, minor elements seamlessly shifting in and out of frame behind the compositions’ vibrant foregrounds. As awe-inspiring as the angular stomp of Narctrax’s “Heaven” or Crystal Castles’ rendition of “Crimewave” are, the environments beneath the immediate elements of these songs become fascinating upon subsequent listens: always deconstructing, refurbishing, and swapping out, never settling into complacency or tedium.

As Curses!’s “Perfect Skin,” a disorienting, cool breeze in contrast to the rabid delirium of the music that precedes it, brings the album to a close, exaggerated heaving turns to sighs of relief, hues return from their oversaturated state, limbs feel numb and the room sinks back into equilibrium. It’s just that kind of experience, something alternately enthralling and exhaustive, some unholy marriage of dissonance and infectiousness. It may seem contradictory to describe music composed on a laptop as “affecting,” but the whirring electronics and drum machine magic on this album reach back even further than their source material, taking Henry Rollins’ confusion and Johnny Rotten’s sneer and cobbling it into some faux-organic heap of boundless energy and dithyrambic emotion, its weight felt not only in the density of its drum hits but in the breadth of its dramatic nature.

You know that first QOTSA album is going for ridiculous amounts of money on eBay now for some reason. Just the CD, not even the vinyl. Bizarre!
I'm glad I picked mine up when I did. There's supposedly a reissue of the s/t album coming out soon though according to Homme.

I thought with al the Homme and QOTSA love that it would be a nice bookend to look at the other side of the spectrum with some John Garcia related projects.

Unida is  band that was formed after the dissolution of Kyuss and Slo Burn. The band originally consisted of John Garcia (vocals), Arthur Seay (guitar), Dave Dinsmore (bass) and Mike Cancino (drums). Dinsmore was later replaced by Scott Reeder.

"Unida's debut album Coping with the Urban Coyote marks a sharp musical turn for singer/songwriter/guitarist John Garcia, toward straight-ahead hard rock and away from his artier work in Kyuss and Slo Burn. Songs like "Thorn" and "Blackwoman" are loud, propulsive rock excursions, featuring Garcia's emotive, classic rock singing, and only the relatively gentle finale "You Wish" sees Unida vary from the tried-and-true hard rock formula."

More a one-off project than a real band, Hermano remains most noteworthy for featuring vocalist John Garcia of Kyuss fame. Garcia, who was also recording with Unida around the same time as Hermano at the end of the '90s, gives the group much of its character, though it's also worth acknowledging that the remaining bandmembers are also established: bassist David Angstrom (Supafuzz, Black Cat Bone), drummer Steve Earle (Afghan Whigs), and guitarists Mike Callahan (Disengaged) and Dandy Brown (Orquesta del Desierto). The band's recording output, eight songs, took a few years to be released, when Tee Pee Records released the Only a Suggestion album in 2002.

I have never really been able to track down the Slo-Burn EP in very good quality nor do I own a copy-Its really great EP and worth checking out  if one is interested in the whole stoner dessert vibe.  I also notice that no Kyuss has been uploaded in the thread so I thought I would provide the harder to find Sons of Kyuss and the Sons of Kyuss demos complete with all cover scans as a nice homage to Garcia's contribution to Stoner Rock rounding out the whole vibe going on.  The rest of the Kyuss albums seem fairly easy to get but if someone wants some of that material shoot me a PM and I will upload it.

Fu Manchu - Eatin' Dust

Quote
After releasing Fu Manchu's remake of Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" as a 10-inch vinyl single in 1998 (yes, some labels were still providing vinyl in the late 1990s), Man's Ruin released the headbangers' Eatin' Dust CD in February 1999. Greatly influenced by the heavy metal of the early '70s, this CD offers a stripped down, garage-like approach to classic metal and steers clear of pop gloss. Some of the production techniques give away the fact that Eatin' Dust is a late-'90s recording, and it would be inaccurate to think of the band as impervious to the influence of '90s alternative rock. But the roots of Fu Manchu's slow, distorted riffs and grooves are early-'70s headbangers like Budgie, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and MC5. From "Godzilla" to forceful originals like "Eatin' Dust," "Mongoose" and "Module Overload," Eatin' Dust recalls '70s metal with pleasing, if less than essential, results.

Jurassic 5 - Jurassic 5 EP

Quote
Clocking in at only half the running time of your average rap album circa 1997, Jurassic 5's debut was the most refreshing hip-hop release of the year, and not just because it abandoned the epic-length concepts of the rap mainstream. With old-school vibes to spare, excellent rhythmatic raps, and the production genius of Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark, EP finally delivered on all the diverse talents promised by the growing hip-hop underground. "Jayou" is a flute-loop classic, and "Concrete Schoolyard" has that nostalgic "can it all be so simple" vibe so rarely heard from hip-hop.

Sharks Keep Moving is the name of a band that is pretty nifty. They were sadly short-lived and only released one full-length album.

Sharks Keep Moving

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?r14ydamyd4u
Quote from: Allmusic
Sharks Keep Moving takes the experimentalism and shifting structures of math rock and crafts them into abrasive but thoughtful indie rock. The band's full-length debut finds a contemplative tempo and quirky lyrics carrying the rock outfit into spacious and powerful compositions akin to Minus the Bear and Karate. From the sleepy, country-tinged "Join Up" to the sprawling, ten-minute-long "Third Instrumental," these punks from bands like the Blood Brothers and Kill Sadie prove that they craft richly progressive downtempo tunes with the best of them. These songs seem to float a few feet off the ground, complexly imagining what could be.

I found some demos on soulseek, but the quality is so low that they're not worth posting. They were just straight forward rock songs, and not great ones at that. I think they could be pre-smack bunny but my friend says the guitar sounds too "Enon" to be from that period.

Here's the new Rebreather:

Quote
It may have taken the band six years and a new drummer to finally release a proper follow-up to 2002's Need Another Seven Astronauts (Half Speed was a compilation of two earlier EPs, and as far as I know, 2006's Finale was never officially released), but it's worth it. The eight songs on Sunflower fit in perfectly in the Rebreather cannon. The band's commendable traits are in full effect, from the pummeling, swirling drive of “Sun Cancer,” “Loveseat,” “Sugarcord,” and “Anthem” to the plaintive angst of “Pen Pal” and “Migrane” to the epic pop-sludge of “Nofalsesuns” (a Lungfish cover, although it sounds unmistakably like Rebreather) and instrumental closer “Wormcharmer.” “Pen Pal” in particular deserve mention, thanks to its heightened melody and tense, controlled delivery. With its tortured chorus of “All I said was wrong,” “Pen Pal” falls in the same category as those past greats listed above. "Wormcharmer" is another strong track and ends the album on a (morosely) high note.

Essentially, Sunflower's a success start to finish. It's good to have Rebreather back. Recommended.

This band is really awesome and I recommend everyone to download and listen to this!

Casual Projects - "No Rest" (2008)

An eight-piece hiphop / jazz band based in Canberra ACT. They're a little bit like Cat Empire, but less silly and a lot more funky. Anyway, I can't describe it, you'll just have to listen!

DJ Z-Trip & DJ P- Uneasy Listening, vol. 1

Quote from: allmusic
Public Enemy, Cyndi Lauper, the Police, Pink Floyd, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and "The Imperial March" all were present on DJ Z-Trip and DJ P's initial addition to the world of genre-less turntablist hip-hop mix albums. Fortunately, this wasn't just a clever sequence of songs, but rather a massive mélange of credibility-baiting combinations, such as Depeche Mode being smothered over Bruce Hornsby or, indescribably, making a searing marriage of Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and Midnight Oil's "Beds are Burning." Soulwax, the Avalanches, and innumerable bedroom bootleggers might have done similar tricks with considerably more emotional participation, but luckily there was enough going on here to back up the obvious niche appeal.

Along with "Radio Soulwax pt. 2," this is the magnum opus of the mashup genre. If you enjoy Girl Talk or 2manydj's, then this is an album you must hear.

(sorry about the sendspace, but I'd rather use that and have it over 100MB than bork the quality by re-compressing it)

(also, because it's a bootleg, and was never "officially" released, there are no actual song-titles, so it's tagged slightly weirdly. You'll see.)

This is a debut 5 track output of a instrumental band "middle9" based on osaka japan. A band formed in 99. They are pursuing arossover music on the basis of groovy bossa beats and vibes.what can be listened is traditional musical instruments, such as a flute, electric piano, electric guitar and upright base.
It should mention especially, aggressive, delicate and free drums. Although they make precise music, also play a sound relaxedly from improvisation or interval. I wouldn't mind getting ahold of the Beauty tape though. I know it is floating around the internest somewhere.

Glenn Branca - The Ascension

Quote
If one chooses to categorize the music on this recording as "rock," this is surely one of the greatest rock albums ever made. But there's the rub. While sporting many of the trappings of the genre -- the instrumentation (electric guitars), the rhythms, the volume, and, most certainly, the attitude -- there is much about The Ascension that doesn't fit comfortably into the standard definition of the term. Branca's overarching concern is with the pure sound produced, particularly of the overtones created by massed, "out of tune," excited strings and the ecstatic quality that sound can engender in the listener. Happily, the music is accessible enough that one can jump right in, regardless of one's direction of approach. The Ascension, in addition to being an utterly superb album on its own merits, uniquely invites listening from both adventurous rock fans and aficionados of experimental electronic music.

Sweet, you guys better download this one. 8-)

New Colour Haze album leaked! It's absolutely great. Album of the year so far for me, with even topping their (previously best) s/t album. For those who aren't familiar with Colour Haze, they're one of the best German bands and also one of the best stoner bands around. You could also describe them as progressive heavy psychedelic krautrock, but that's a bit of a mouthful.

Not my up, and sorry for no mediaf!re. Link checked, used it myself and great quality.

DJ KRUSH MEGAPOST

I just got my hands on a fuckton of DJ Krush (courtesy of loadingvault dot com).  Krush is a Japanese DJ and he does a lot of collaborations with a lot of people.  His albums float across the downtempo/trip-hop/hip-hop spectrum, some of them featuring more rappers, some singers, and some of them instrumental only.  "Ki-Oku" is a good place to start ... no vocals, just his beats and a trumpet (Toshinori Kondo) making for some incredibly thick and relaxed soundscapes.  A more hip-hop-oriented album would be "Milight," which has a different featured guest on each track (not just rappers though) and intersperses the tracks will short missives from the collaborators talking about their music.  Right now "Shinsou" is my favorite.  I haven't listened to everything here enough to be really familiar with it all, but I certainly haven't found any of it to be weak.  DJ Krush is pretty consistently excellent in my experience.
