Bodies of Water - A Certain Feeling

Quote from: pitchfork

With a Mamas and the Papas-ish lineup of two men and two women, Bodies of Water blend the revival-tent theatrics of the Danielson Famile with the joyous cacophony of Tilly and the Wall and the dimly lit kraut rock of Electrelane. Only a year after their debut (Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink), the L.A.-based quartet led by husband-and-wife team Meredith and David Metcalf have returned with a collection that plays up the communal feeling of their combined singing, but also mixes it with something shadowy and enigmatic. No longer straightforward in their blissfully SoCal re-imagining of gospel-pop, they now sound steeped in candlelight, moonlight, and gaslight-- something ephemeral that shines uncertainly in the darkness.

Though A Certain Feeling maintains the expansiveness and drama of Bodies of Water's first album, it's colored more darkly. Instead of major-key, Polyphonic Spree-esque celebrations, the overwhelmingly minor-key songs are now more hushed, haunted, or introspective. If Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink was the sound of walking into a boisterous youth group service, A Certain Feeling is the sound of entering a stately cathedral. That's not say that the vibe is too grandiose or serious: "Darling, Be Here", the album's best track, melds a Broadway-worthy vocal melody with a proggy, Yes-influenced guitar-and-organ extended intro, and "Water Here" funks up the band's playful Godspell gospel with a breakdown of skronking horns and rhythmic guitars. And while Bodies of Water are always noted for their vocal prowess, those guitar parts, like the fuzzy garage-rock figure that drives "Under the Pines" alongside a psychedelic organ vamp, showcase a newfound muscularity to David's playing and riff writing.

And for those that miss the unbridled positivity of their debut, Bodies of Water close this record with their prettiest, quietest song yet. Stripped of all their reverb and built on a gently poignant piano, "The Mud Gapes Open" is lyrically concise, containing only eight words in its entirety. In fact, the track's only other lyric, outside of the ones in its title, is the line, "we're not that worried," delivered in delicately sweet co-ed harmony. Which seems an appropriate note to end the album on. If Bodies of Water can continue to create such richly textured, expressive music, that's exactly how they should feel about their future.

The debut EP by Sydney 4 piece Van She is a brilliant mix of post punk, new romantic pop songwriting, with rugged guitars and electronic touches. A very nice start...

Mercy Arms - Kept Low

Quote from: rave magazine
If one thing can be said about these boys, it’s that they have got the ‘indie rock for good-looking young people’ thing down pat. It’s almost too easy to dismiss them as Stroke-y Arms, but it’s not a bad thing really. The tracks are instantly hummable and, judging from their MySpace, will cause teenage girls everywhere to fall in love very fast. This EP demonstrates a very solid grip on how to present what by now you could probably call a ‘typical’ indie rock sound; they succeed utterly in this department. Uptown Address is particularly good, a strong jumble of sharp riffs and sharper drumming, topped off with suitably morose vocals. The best track here, Scream, is a very enjoyable pseudo-instrumental with shimmering guitar, rapid fire drumming and some ‘ooohs’ in the background. It’s nothing you haven’t heard before, but you certainly can’t fault the effort and execution. Solid stuff.

Ghostwood - Ghostwood

Quote
Modular Record's latest darlings, Ghostwood, have just released their debut self-titled EP. Formally know as The Ghosts, these Sydney kids are fast becoming well known around radio airwaves with their song Red Version getting multiple plays here and there. Floating around in the same boat as Mercy Arms and Lost Valentinos, Ghostwood combine that real sort of indie surf-rock (it's a genre now), slow soothing, big drums effect but make it easily listenable and enjoyable. The guys have been quiet as of late after doing a round of shows around Australia promoting their EP, but one hopes that they'll be back again soon.

I havn't gotten to listen that Bodies of Water album yet, but last night I got to see them and Port O'Brien open up for Dan Friel in Cleveland.
Pretty decent, but a strange pairing for a noise pop headliner. I got to pick up the first Dan Friel E.P. while I was at it.
How do you feel about that Bodies of Water album though... is it worth a listen?

(As a side note, I havn't uploaded anything in months, so I'm going to try to get around to that)

Wow, thanks for the introduction to this band...these guys are awesome and it's the first time I've ever heard of them

Yeah, they really are, aren't they? The Stand-Ins hold a lot of number 1 spots on this board, I think. Certainly mine at the moment. Make sure you check out the first part of the set as well, The Stage Names, which is nearly as good and lets you appriceate The Stand-Ins even more. Black Sheep Boy is a damn fine album as well.
From earlier in the thread.

Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun

Quote
This might sound like hyperbole, but I'm not exaggerating when
I say that "The Dance of the Moon & the Sun" was the greatest
CDR release of all-time. The packaging, the music, the overarching
feel of the whole release was nothing short of perfection. It was
criminally limited (though understandably so with the intricate
packaging & booklet) and eventually found its way onto various
mp3 blogs and other file-sharing resources online, and it
 became the stuff of legend.

But what of the music? It's the rarest of cases that one would
want to listen to 2.5 hours of   music by a single band in a
single sitting, but Natural Snow Buildings is that rare exception.
There is no filler on this monumental masterpiece. It is the
history of all things. It is an epic poem. It is a love letter to
the world. NSB find their way through dense forests and
towering peaks using every weapon in their arsenal. The aching
beauty of "Wisconsin" is the perfect piece of ambience in the
tradition of Windy & Carl. "John Carpenter" is loose and
subdued, washed in reverb with a nod to The Dirty Three. The
title  track flickers in the night sky like the North Star,
beckoning those who hear it's heady call. The 25 minute
stunner, "Felt Presence, GhostlyHumming"  takes flight and
never returns to earth, losing you in the darkness. It's desolation
will rip your heart out, while putting much drone-based music to shame.

Ride - Going Blank Again

Quote
From the sounds of the cloistered, chaotic opener, "Leave Them All Behind," Going Blank Again sounds like it could be headed down the same Nowhere path. Guitars as far as the ear can hear -- not much different from the effect gained after riding a sit-and-spin for eight straight minutes -- are just as dizzying as the prior record's opener. But rather than sink into a thick underbelly of melancholy, Going Blank Again offers sunshiney melodies and gleaming, bold production. All the band's elements are more pliable, and overall it's pretty cheery. In fact, some of the album could be loosely classified as power pop. Bouncy tunes like "Twisterella," "Not Fazed," "Mouse Trap," and "Time of Her Time" each share more than a thing or two in common with the likes of Teenage Fanclub, but with more layered vocals and less-cutting guitars. Though Ride's guitars don't bite as much, there are loads of them everywhere; the band doesn't completely sacrifice their love of reverberating noise, but it's more done in the name of pop than to merely cause a blistering racket. Though the lyrics often read as overtly simple or obtuse (a common Ride foible), Mark Gardener's and Andy Bell's voices are too pretty to let this shortcoming mar things. They create enough of a mood with their proper instruments, and their sighing and random vocal intonations are undeniably lovely. No longer do they hide shortcomings with sheets of distortion, and there's a lot more focus and confidence on display throughout. Don't let a Ride fan tell you otherwise: Going Blank Again is anything but empty.

Catherine Wheel - Chrome

Quote
The original title, Crank, would have been apt. Producer Gil Norton (Pixies, Echo & the Bunnymen) was brought in to toughen this band's sound and set them apart from the wave of U.K. upstarts who were pounding U.S. shores. That he did. But it's not necessarily progress; Talk Talk's master experimentalist, Tim Friese-Greene, gave Catherine Wheel's brilliant debut, Ferment, a dripping beauty, opulent textures illuminating barely hidden firepower. On even the most angry, aggressive tracks, such as "Texture" and "Shallow," this shimmering, shuddering mist was still ever-present. Many of those glistening touches have indeed been subtracted by Norton, and they're missed. That Chrome is still a terrific LP proves Catherine Wheel capable of eclipsing the overload. Like another sharp LP that "cranked" for an hour without much sonic letup, Chrome reminds one of Sugar's Copper Blue. Not because Catherine Wheel covered Hüsker Dü on the 30 Century Man EP; it's because that was the last LP that combined this kind of songwriting prowess, raging playing, dynamics, pop tunes gone kablooey, and huge, bonfire sound. And unlike that toasty Sugar LP, this twin-guitar quartet knows how to bring it down: both the spindly single "Crank" and the resplendent "The Nude" seem almost tearful, they're so pretty through the thickness, and the knockout "Strange Fruit" is as fulsome as it is fierce. Rob Dickinson sings as if to choke on his words, yet never loses a gritty determination backed soundly by his and Brian Futter's guitars. Add in heavier versions of previous B-sides-that-deserved-better "Half Life" and "Ursa Major Space Station," and you've got a double play from a band too resolute to fall victim to sophomore slump wimp out, too talented to write half-baked tunes in two minutes, and too strong to glaze out in a shoegaze haze some pigeonholed them in after Ferment.

To unzip them all you need is a program that can handle .rar files. Winrar is de facto free but not really. 7zip is free i tihnk but i have no idea since i use winrar exclusively.

Amiina - Kurr

Quote
Arriving out of Iceland with a resume that name checks their native cousins Sigur Ros as well as glockenspiel lover Sufjan Stevens, the four ladies of Amiina now daintily rap at the doors of a larger audience with a sound that is as delicate as it is arresting. Kurr (Icelandic for “cooing”) opens with a gentle refrain that couples toned orchestra bells with perfectly tuned plucked strings, a mesmerizing organic intonation reminiscent of Brian Eno’s ambient endeavors. Swirling a mix of violin, cellos, and atmospheric electronics together with wordless voicing and an array of oft-overlooked instrumental sounds (the chime of tuned water glasses to the tremulous warble of a singing saw), Amiina weave melodies into either euphony compositions such as the richly layered soft horns of “Bláfeldur”, or mini sonic investigations as on “Lúpína” where detuning strings segue way into the fat raindrop sounds of a thumbed Kalimba. All of which is an entirely relaxing bliss.

Excellent sound quality!

Here's what we do know: Waits has dubbed his summer 2008 tour "Glitter and Doom." It's a trek through the lower half of the U.S. he describes as "PEHDTSCKJMBA" (pronounced "pess-kuh-JUM-buh), an acronym for each of the tour's stops: Phoenix, El Paso, Houston, Dallas, Tulsa, St. Louis, Columbus, Knoxville, Jacksonville, Mobile, Birmingham and Atlanta.

For his Atlanta stop, recorded at the city's historic Fox Theater on July 5, Waits delivered a stunning and epic two-and-a-half-hour performance, including songs he says he's never attempted outside of the studio before. Backing Waits is a five-piece group featuring Seth Ford-Young (upright bass), Patrick Warren (keyboards), Omar Torrez (guitars), Vincent Henry (woodwinds) and Casey Waits (drums and percussion). "They play with racecar precision and they are all true conjurers," Waits says. "They are all multi-instrumentalists and they polka like real men."

my second post in this thread, i really dig these 3 albums.  you should dig them too.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Bravery Repetition & Noise

Quote
Having long explored the ins and outs of psychedelia, the Brian Jonestown Massacre now delve deep into the gloaming world of pop. Bravery, Repetition and Noise is a darkly dreamy album, rich in atmospheres, layered in waves of sound, moody pop for disillusioned people. The album's antecedents are clear, the gloomy post-punk Brit bands whose angst shuddered out across the airwaves in the late '70s through the early '80s. Of course, many of those groups were as inspired by psychedelia as they were by punk's nihilism, pulling both strands into a doom-laden, experimental sound quite distinct from anything that had come before or since. BJM uses this as their touchstone, lovingly re-creating the moods and atmospheres of the past. The vast vistas of "Open Heart Surgery," for example, is so Cure-esque that it seems to have been ripped right out of the hands and mouth of Robert Smith. "Just for Today" is Echo and the Bunnymen transplanted to San Francisco circa 1967, which is where they really wanted to be half the time anyway. Brighter numbers are still capped by dark clouds, musically and lyrically, poppier melodies are snatched out of the sun to bask in the shadows, while there's even a handful of more acoustic ballads to give the whole concept a twist. Bravery may have started at post-punk's knees, but by the end shimmers into a category all its own, and its all the more enjoyable for it.

Gravediggaz - The pick, the sickle, and the shovel

Quote
When the Gravediggaz emerged from hip-hop's crypt three years ago, they were credited with ushering in a new wave of scary rap known as horrorcore. Thankfully, the group has survived that short-lived trend, which generated more schlock than shock. On the Gravediggaz's second album, The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel, Poetic, Frukwan, Prince Paul (of De La Soul fame) and RZA (of Wu-Tang Clan) emphasize insight rather than fright.

Joining them is a slew of Wu-Tang Clan associates, who help take this album to the next level – rappers such as Killah Priest, Hell Razor, Omen and 9th Prince show off their verbal dexterity with cryptic, often apocalyptic, verses. You can see they've had a good example in RZA, who continues to shine on the mike. In "Twelve Jewelz," he gets scientific: "Solid, liquid and gases that cause the land masses/And its space catalyst all matter that exist/It is dense third dimension/Must be observed through physical comprehension." You'll need the lyric sheets to appreciate everything that's going on here.

Producers Poetic, Fourth Disciple, True Master and newcomers Goldfinghaz and Darkim create an exotic, multilayered soundscape that is often melancholic, but also melodic. Surprisingly, RZA's sole contribution as a producer, "What's Goin' On," pales in comparison; another disappointment on The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel is Prince Paul's low profile. Nonetheless, with their new album the Gravediggaz deliver plenty to sink your pick into.

Tristeza - A Colores

Quote
San Diego's instrumental post-rock quintet came together after playing in such seminal San Diego bands as The Locust, Crimson Curse, Swing Kids, and Gogogo Airheart among others. This is their third full-length since the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Spine & Sensory" in 2000. It has layers and textures akin to Boards Of Canada and Amon Tobin. Melodic and inventive, emotive and inspirational, the music sings so eloquently throughout, it is nothing less then revelatory. There's great hope and optimism present here; a sanguine feeling that permeates the whole album. A colorful journey beyond instrumental post-rock, delving into the darker realms of modern psychedelia.

Chinese artist Sa Ding Ding is apparently getting tossed around in the "world music" genre and receiving a decent amount of attention in that regard, but since "world music" is such bullshit, her music is going mostly unheard. This is a shame, as it's actually quite good. Sa Ding Ding mixes traditional Chinese music with modern electronic instruments and high production values to create an interesting fusion. Her baby-like voice and pop music song structures make it fairly accessible to exploratory types despite the language barrier. Definitely worth a download, even if just to decide if you like the genre. This record took me fucking ages to find too.

Here's two albums by danish band, Murder. Couldn't find any reviews in english, but my own description is indie, singer/songwriter, lo-fi, and for once, sung in a basso voice! Pretty good all of it. As with all small bands, they don't really make any money off this, so buy it if you like it!

This guy, guys. This guy.

Benjamin Shaw- There's Always Hope, There's Always Cabernet

Quote
After a year in Melbourne, playing gaggles of shows and being involved in some frightfully hot bondings with the likes of Little Red and Spun Rivals, Ben returned last year to England with a wife and a whole array of new songs and recordings.

Now living in the woods of North London, Ben has recently been seen playing all the main dives you've never heard of, and continues to be making mountains of his molehill recordings.

Neil Young and Nick Drake, mixed with the Okkervil Rivers, Jeffrey Lewises and Sparklehorses of today have become the diet, and with all the agility you would expect from a gangly, pale washing line of a man, Benjamin Shaw is coming at you like a wet duffle-coat.

This little 10-track LP is a gem - the recordings are real down-to-earth, and Ben really lets his emotions flow into his work, much like Will Scheff. Do try. My own words cannot explain how well this man can craft a song. (that's not the album artwork above - just a little bit of something he did)

Read the rules (they're about 1/4th of the way down the page).  Download 7zip.  Actually, maybe we should just put 7zip in the rules?

Has any Liars been posted yet? I'd like to put up a couple albums here, if it hasn't been done before.

Henry Thomas - Complete Recorded Works 1927-1 [Best of]

Quote
Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas (1876-?) was a railroading hobo from the Lone Star State whose style and repertoire were obsolete long before the first of his two recording sessions in 1927. His last recorded song, "Don't Leave Me Here," a plaintive version of his "Don't Ease Me In," was his bluesy take on the popular early 20th-century standard "Alabama Bound" and is one of many gems in this unique collection of extra-Delta country blues, "rags," and medicine show or vaudeville tunes. With Thomas punctuating most of his songs by tooting on pre-harmonica quills, or panpipes, these colorful numbers offer a glimpse into a vanished world. After recording such delights as "Railroadin' Some," "Jonah in the Wilderness," "Red River Blues," and "Honey, Won't You Allow Me One More Chance?," the mysterious minstrel disappeared--unless that really was Thomas on the corner of Crawford and Capitol during Houston's winter of 1949.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Also, please do NOT request albums.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page.

High Places - High Places [2008] MP3 192kbps

From Thrill Jockey (their label)
Quote
High Places is Mary Pearson and Rob Barber. Mary and Rob met while Mary was completing a music degree in bassoon performance and Rob was working in visual art, teaching lithography and etching at an art school. Both were performing as solo musicians at the time. Mary relocated to New York from Michigan in late spring 2006, and the two soon after began collaborating under the name High Places. The name refers to a place where one has a better vantage point and can gain broader perspective; it references a love for mountains, rooftops, and of course metaphorical “high places.” The duo has an “exquisite corpse” style of songwriting where they exchange ideas back and forth, challenging one another’s expectations, pushing songs to new places, or more aptly, new heights. They began by releasing a number of singles as well as contributing songs to a few compilations. These early and varied works were collected and released in July of 2008 as 03/07-09/07 in advance of tours with Deerhunter and No Age.

Since its inception, High Places has created a signature sound out of using bass-heavy, yet crisp beats, lilting vocal melodies, syncopated rhythmic lines performed on folk percussion instruments, guitar duets turned into treated samples, and percussive lines created from the manipulation of household objects. The songwriting is expansive and fluid, all the while managing to be concise. Overall, the compositions are settled and assured. High Places gravitates toward the organic over the electronic, and that natural aesthetic adds warmth and intimacy to the recordings.

In a live setting, the band creates their layered recordings with Mary singing and simultaneously manipulating her vocals with various delay and reverb pedals, while playing some hand percussion, recorders, and creating and controlling various loops. Rob handles the drums triggering a variety of percussive sounds with his drum pads, as well as playing hand percussion, wooden blocks with contact mics, and singing some ambient vocals. High Places’ self-titled debut was recorded by Rob and Mary in their apartment in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene neighborhood between January and May of 2008. They employed a wide variety of instruments to make this album ranging from the more traditional: 12 string guitar, banjo, shakers and rattles, bass, bells and Kalimba, to the inventive: plastic bags, mixing bowls, wood blocks and other common household objects. The album has a contemplative and organic lyrical tone emphasized by the themes of goodness manifested in nature, hardship and wonder as necessities to human existence and growth. Additionally, the idea of maturation and development is further accented through the recurring mention of trees and their extending, enveloping branches. Rob created the High Places artwork by using photos taken by both band members. The images are drawn from nature but all have a subtle, mystical, “golden” motif, a fitting frame for the album’s recurring themes. This can best be summed up by the words to “Gold Coin,” a song that was inspired by Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet:

The ocean is your god-self
The sun is your god-self
God as air
Part of you is man
Part of you is god-self
The rest is just stumbling in the mist

Fela Kuti - Zombie [1977]

Quote
Zombie was the most popular and impacting record that Fela Anikulopo Kuti and Africa 70 would record -- it ignited the nation to follow Fela's lead and antagonize the military zombies that had the population by the throat. Fela is direct and humorous in his attack as he barks out commands to the soldiers like: "Attention! Double up! Fall In! Fall out! Fall down! Get ready!" Meanwhile, his choir responds with "Zombie!" in between each statement. Since the groove was so absolutely contagious, it took the nation by storm: People in the street would put on a blank stare and walk with hands affront proclaiming "Zombie!" whenever they would see soldiers. If "Zombie" caught the attention of the populous it also cought the attention of the authority figures -- this would cause devastating personal and professional effects as the Nigerian government came down on him with absolute brute force not long after the release of this record. Also included are "Monkey Banana," a laid-back groove that showcases drummer Tony Allen's mastery of the Afro-beat, and "Everything Scatter," a standard mid-tempo romp. Both songs are forgetful in relation to "Zombie," but this is still an essential disc to own for the title track alone. [Zombie was passed up on the run of domestic two-fers put out by MCA, but the track is available on The Best of Fela Kuti.]
