Hey guys, I've sucked the blood out of this thread enough. Quick question. When using Mediafire, how do I upload an entire folder? I can only upload a max of ten files at a time. How would one go about uploading all songs off of an album?

close winrar again - deceptively, you very rarely need it open once it's installed.

click/drag to select the files you want zipped and right click, "add to archive"... from there on, the options to pick .rar/.zip and to name the resulting file should be self-explanatory.

edit: even more simply, if you have the entire album in one folder, you can just right-click the folder and go to "add to archive..." - really, once you have winrar installed, the context menu does everything you want it to. you'll rarely find that you have to open the program itself.

Amazing work, guys.
I'd feel like a jerk for not sharing more, so I will.  Expect more from me soon!

Symphony X - Paradise Lost

http://www.mediafire.com/?4wzlabnzdoz

Quote from: about.com
With Paradise Lost, the long running power/progressive metal band has it running on all cylinders. The songwriting is first-rate, with powerful melodies and memorable hooks blending effortlessly with complex and progressive musicianship. It's been five years since their last studio album, and the songs have a little darker edge to them this time around.

Russell Allen is a great vocalist whose talents are really showcased on Paradise Lost. His edgier growl is used a lot of the album, but his powerful melodic voice is utilized as well. Symphony X uses a nice mixture of styles on this album that contrast the aggressive and the melodic. With recent excellent new albums from Dream Theater and now Symphony X, it's a great time for progressive metal fans.
By the way, the 'growl' mentioned is not a typical Metal growl ie cookie-monster.  Russel Allen sings clean vocals throughout, but he ranges from melodic highs and deep dark lows.  He's amazing...!

128kbps MP3.  I'll try to upload higher bitrates in the future, sorry for those of you who prefer higher quality (I am usually one of them).  If there is demand, I'll upload it again at 256 or VBR.

I've just signed up, and figured I should probably try and pay off some music leeching karma. I'm assuming that posting leaked albums is fair game, going by the post a couple above mine, so as a result, the new British Sea Power (titled "Do You Like Rock Music") that someone requested.  I'm listening to it now. It's pretty sweet.

Also present is "Laughter in the Dark" by Hawk and a Hacksaw. From allmusic:

Quote
On his second release as A Hawk and a Hacksaw, Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeremy Barnes continues to play the antique card, now focusing on the "ompah" accordion sound of an 18th century European village, as opposed to the Reconstruction-era American village of his previous effort. Of course, just because Barnes evokes a certain time and place doesn't mean his hectic musical ear stays in that one place, hence the squeezebox that morphs into a battery of bagpipes on the highly cinematic opener, "Laughter in the Dark." There's also room for a prideful horn that echoes the work of Ennio Morricone and the constant pitter-patter of castanets and marching snares that ensure that the solemn moments like "For Slavoj" and "Europa" don't stay that way for too long.

And to cap off my debut, the EP "You Are The Conductor" by Caspian. I gave up searching to see if this is already up, as you seem to have a member with the same name. Apologies if this is already here somewhere. Allmusic has nothing to say, but it's just awesome instrumental post-rock. I am not giving it justice with this selling whatsoever.

Larry Kraman and Koch took a huge leap of faith when they began putting together the compilation that would come to be known as "Beatles ReGrooveed". Beatles cover songs are certainly not uncommon in Rock music - but as various styles of electronic music begin to crawl out from the dark lounges of the world into the blistering daylight, it would only make sense for someone to test just how far those sounds can be pushed.

As per request, another upload post!

Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Parasio UFO - Mantra of Love

My personal favorite AMT album.  Consists of two tracks: "Le La Lo" (30:00) and "L'Ambition Dans Le Miroir" (15:02).  The first track is a masterpiece of shifting vocal harmonies (the title is also the lyrics) over a series of crescendos based around a single riff and interspersed with freak-out guitar solos.  Absolutely destructive bass work as well.  Highly recommended but only for people who look at that half-hour song length and smile.  Probably among the more accessible of AMT's work and therefore a good starting point if you've never really listened to them before.

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?bmhrgudm2c9
I was looking around for pictures of the album cover for "Anthem of the Space" and I found a blog that has a LOT more AMT uploaded (as well as a Hawkwind album, a lot of krautrock, the entire SUNN0))) discography, a couple Acid King albums, etc.)  Instead of uploading all that stuff myself I'll just link the group to it ... http://tonefloat.blogspot.com/  Have fun!  Meanwhile I will upload another Bardo Pond album, edit to come.

Bardo Pond - Lapsed

If you have any idea what Bardo Pond do, and you are attracted to it, this is a no-brainer.  For those who don't know what Bardo Pond do, they play very slow heavy feedbacky droning songs with flute and female vocals over top.  It makes for fantastic listening, although I often find myself a bit tired after one of their albums.  I've heard it referred to as "opium metal," which makes a certain amount of sense to me.

Of Montreal -- The Sunlandic Twins with Bonus EP

Quote from: AMG
Kevin Barnes' seventh Of Montreal album continues in his traditional vein of toying and teasing our memories of '60s pop, fed through whichever other fad or fashion most appeals to him at the time. In this instance, it's "21st century ADD electro-cinematic avant disco," which is a deliciously protracted way of saying quirky rhythms, lush harmonics, and a warm spot on the same side of the bed that the Polyphonic Spree occasionally share. The most deceptive angle to the album probably has to do with the titles — it's unlikely whether the most obtuse mind could ever imagine tapping its toes to something called "Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)," while "Forecast Fascist Future" simply shouldn't sound like a British Beach Boys, pebble-dashed with Ray Davies' finest harmonic daydreams, and then piped into a nursery where the infant Frank Zappa lays sleeping. Elsewhere, "Our Spring Is Sweet, Not Fleeting" may be little more than a minute long, but you live through great swathes of Rosemary's Baby while it's playing. To harp on about the "obvious" precedents that aging ears can pick out of Of Montreal's sonic stew, however, is to overlook all that is so savagely entertaining about their music (plus, it makes them sound like a High Llamas tribute band, which is unfair as well). Rather, Sunlandic Twins is an album to leave playing while you're going about your daily business. Then see how quickly you discover its 13 tracks burrowing so deeply into your skull that it's as though you'd lived with its jerking, burbling, and never less than transcendental swirlings for ever.

Patrick Wolf -- The Magic Position

Quote from: AMG
Brooding, multi-talented indie prince Patrick Wolf lets a little sunshine in on his third full-length album, the undeniably catchy but highly unstable The Magic Position. Released in 2005, Wind in the Wires struck a nice balance between eerie British folk-inspired imagery/instrumentation and general home-recorded electronic cacophony. It was a deeply personal, slightly guarded, and occasionally brutal slice of brain tissue that promised great things from the young singer/violinist. That skull is open to the public on The Magic Position, and while the results can be a little spotty, the exhibit itself is impossible to ignore. Wolf is blissfully unafraid of pomp and circumstance, an observation lent weight by the pulse-quickening opener, "Overture." With its refrain of "Come on, open wide and let some light in," it's the perfect litmus test for potential listeners, as what follows is essentially the equivalent of a walk in the rain with the sun peeking out and the umbrella in the trash. The songs are more vibrant and confident (even danceable) than anything he's released in the past. The title cut, with its mechanical Motown-inspired backbeat and strings, avoids the twee-soul of Belle & Sebastian by hinging on Wolf's deep baritone. It, like much of the record, juggles irony and hope with lust and love in a way that dismisses the opinions of the masses without insulting them. That occasionally barbed baritone is what keeps Wolf with one foot so firmly planted in the dark and, like late-'80s Depeche Mode, it's the juxtaposition between the two worlds that keeps things so interesting. The Magic Position loses a little focus near the end, but flashes of inspired lunacy like the jarring arrival of a spectral Marianne Faithfull on the spooky "Magpie" help to make this unpredictable collection of Victorian-peaked electro/folk-pop so hard to dislike.

Pierre Lapointe -- La Forêt des Mal-Aimés

Quote from: Archambault
Following up his brilliant debut album, acclaimed by the public (90,000 albums sold) and the critics (13 ADISQ nominations, and 6 Felix including Best New Artist and Popular Album of the Year), Pierre Lapointe comes back with his second opus! Logical evolution from his first album and his unceasingly revisited shows arrangements, "La forêt des mal-aimés" offers a refreshing, dancing and modern new touch. Directed by Jean Massicotte (2005 winner of Best Director Felix for Pierre Lapointe’s debut album), with arrangements supported by Philippe Brault, a duo that already proved its way!

Miss Loretta Lynn- Van Lear Rose

Quote
The brilliance of Van Lear Rose is not just how Jack and Loretta's approaches complement each other, but how the record captures the essence of Loretta Lynn's music even as it has flourishes that are distinctly Jack, such as the slide guitar that powers their duet, "Portland Oregon."

Upon its release, Lynn claimed that the album is "countrier than anything I've ever cut," which is no doubt a reference to the charmingly ragged, lively feel of Van Lear Rose. Working with a band of kindred garage punkers, including Dave Feeny of the Detroit-based country outfit Blanche, White insisted that Loretta and crew keep to a minimum of takes, preserving the energy and excitement of musicians cutting an album when the music is still fresh to their ears. Often, the classic records she made with Owen Bradley were cut in a handful of takes, but he was producing a fine-tuned machine. White, in contrast, keeps things loose and fresh, as if it was a jam session. The end result is quite different than Lynn's classic hits in terms of production, but the feel is strikingly similar, since White focuses on the essence of her music and subtly shifts his approach according to the demands of a song. If it demands it, he'll lay down some crunching guitar, as he does on the aforementioned "Portland Oregon" and the bluesy stomp "Have Mercy." He keeps things spare and sad on "Miss Being Mrs.," where Loretta is mourning the loss of her husband, and "This Old House" is lean and tattered, appropriate for the uptempo old-timey singalong. Unlike Rick Rubin's productions for Johnny Cash, which were deliberately somber and monochromatic, White's work on Van Lear Rose is multi-textured, with the layers of steel guitars, muffled drums, and echoed guitars lending a dramatic, impressionistic quality to the songs -- and unlike Daniel Lanois' productions, it feels organic, not studied. Van Lear Rose also gives equal import to every side of Lynn's persona, so this is equally sad and funny, sacred and secular. On a sheer sonic level, the album is enthralling -- it's easy to get lost in the music, and Lynn sings with a vigor that's startling for a woman of 70 -- but it's an instant classic because of how that sound is married to set of songs that are among the strongest she's ever had. On her last studio album, she wrote only one song. Here, she's penned all 13 tracks, and there's a sense that these are songs that she needed to get out of her, particularly in a setting as intimate as this. While not all the songs are as explicitly personal as "Miss Being Mrs.," that's for the best, since the variety of styles and types of songs on Van Lear Rose -- everything from heartache ballads and country rave-ups to story-songs and gospel -- illustrate the depth and range of her writing. These are songs that hold their own with her greatest hits, and while it's unlike anything else she's cut, this is surely one of her great albums.

Goddamnit guy just stop it. I've got a backlog of about 5 albums that I haven't listened to at all.

Seeing as the Mediafire thread has been so good to me as of late, I figured I'd try to be good to it;

Midnight Juggernauts- Dystopia

Incredibly funky Australian new-wave/electro-house. Homies with Daft Punk and all the Ed Banger crew.

Quote from: allmusic
Midnight Juggernauts are an electro-pop synth rock group from Melbourne, Australia. The founding members, in a nod to the Ramones, renamed themselves Vincent Juggernaut and Andy Juggernaut. The two met in high school and played straightforward guitar rock together before moving on to experiment with synthesizers and dance music. Unable to find a permanent drummer, they played their first concerts with part-time drummers while wearing the uniforms of military dictators. Eventually they abandoned the costumes as well as the part-timers and settled on Daniel Stricker -- who changed his name to Thunderfist to celebrate the occasion -- to be their full-time drummer. The group remixed songs for the Presets, !!!, Electric Six, Damn Arms, K.I.M., and Dragonette, among others. Their debut album, Dystopia, was released in 2007 on their own independent label, Siberia. It received a boost in popularity and sales when French dance act Justice referred to the Australian band as one of their favorites during interviews with BBC Radio and the Pitchfork website. The two groups later toured North America together.

Porcupine Tree- Voyage 34: The Complete Trip

Porcupine Tree copped a mention in the "Space Rock" thread, so I figured I'd post their spaciest album.

Quote from: allmusic
Voyage 34, originally a two-volume EP series from 1992-1993, was expanded into "The Complete Trip" after Steven Wilson remixed and added production for its eventual re-release seven years later. Documenting the ill effects of an acid trip by a frequent user (the first 33 were fine), the four-phase work begins with a straight-laced narrator explaining the events leading up to the trip, with straight-ahead (though slightly exploratory) guitar work by Wilson over a mid-tempo drum section. Thankfully, the album gradually moves into more ambient climes, with trippy vocal samples framing the mood throughout the final phases. Including a thick booklet with most of the narration repeated alongside surreal artwork, Voyage 34: The Complete Trip is a bit self-serious and pseudo-mystical even without the music to add to it, an intriguing experiment but hardly a work to stand on its own

I hate you people so much. I have a backlog of about ten albums i haven't listened to yet, because I'm too busy re-listening to all the great music I've already gotten.

Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band - Self titled

Quote from: AMG
With carnivalesque extravaganzas, weepy show-stoppers and traditional East European pieces arranged with an eye cocked toward worldbeat, this Toronto-based band wanders within the ample backyard of the Jewish diaspora. Songs meander through Turkey, Macedonia and the Middle East as well as scratchy 78s by blazing clarinet avatar Naftule Brandwein. Musicianship is exhilarating, mixing the pinpoint precision of a symphony orchestra with a saloon air of unabashed abandon. There's almost too much going on here to absorb: Allan Meyovitz's quavering tenor milked full-hilt on the a capella "Fishelekh in Vasser," "Kandel's Hora," which whirls the dust off a traditional Jewish dance, Anne Lederman's mercury-laden violin solo at the top of "Dance Medley," and "Der Rebbe Elimilekh"'s implicit promise of a living-room appearance by Joel Grey.

The Led Zeppelin III upload is missing Immigrant song, and is in protected wma format so I can't put it in iTunes :(.

Anyways, thanks all you people, I've gotten an incredible amount of amazing music from this thread, I'm going to try to find something appropriate to upload tonight when I get back from school, to reciprocate.

I love this thread soooo much.

What I hate is when for some reason I cannot get on to Mediafire at all and am unable to download any of the good music I want so much. I am sad. If anyone knows why I cannot connect to Mediafire even though I can ping the server, or how to remedy this problem, the help would be much appreciated!

Sorry bout that, I'll re-upload it so that it has the Immigrant song, for some reason that was in mp3 format and in a completely different folder. That's why it didn't get included. Should i only post things in MP3 format from now on?

here....
Led Zeppelin III

Quote
On their first two albums, Led Zeppelin unleashed a relentless barrage of heavy blues and rockabilly riffs, but Led Zeppelin III provided the band with the necessary room to grow musically. While there are still a handful of metallic rockers, III is built on a folky, acoustic foundation that gives the music extra depth. And even the rockers aren't as straightforward as before: the galloping "Immigrant Song" is powered by Robert Plant's banshee wail, "Celebration Day" turns blues-rock inside out with a warped slide guitar riff, and "Out on the Tiles" lumbers along with a tricky, multi-part riff. Nevertheless, the heart of the album lies on the second side, when the band delve deeply into English folk. "Gallows Pole" updates a traditional tune with a menacing flair, and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" is an infectious acoustic romp, while "That's the Way" and "Tangerine" are shimmering songs with graceful country flourishes. The band hasn't left the blues behind, but the twisted bottleneck blues of "Hats off to (Roy) Harper" actually outstrips the epic "Since I've Been Loving You," which is the only time Zeppelin sound a bit set in their ways.

and because of this... i thought about moby dick and thought, is it on 3? no... its on 2... sooooo

Led Zeppelin II

Quote
Recorded quickly during Led Zeppelin's first American tours, Led Zeppelin II provided the blueprint for all the heavy metal bands that followed it. Since the group could only enter the studio for brief amounts of time, most of the songs that compose II are reworked blues and rock & roll standards that the band was performing on-stage at the time. Not only did the short amount of time result in a lack of original material, it made the sound more direct. Jimmy Page still provided layers of guitar overdubs, but the overall sound of the album is heavy and hard, brutal and direct. "Whole Lotta Love," "The Lemon Song," and "Bring It on Home" are all based on classic blues songs -- only, the riffs are simpler and louder and each song has an extended section for instrumental solos. Of the remaining six songs, two sport light acoustic touches ("Thank You," "Ramble On"), but the other four are straight-ahead heavy rock that follows the formula of the revamped blues songs. While Led Zeppelin II doesn't have the eclecticism of the group's debut, it's arguably more influential. After all, nearly every one of the hundreds of Zeppelin imitators used this record, with its lack of dynamics and its pummeling riffs, as a blueprint.

Radiohead - The Bends

Quote
Pablo Honey in no way was adequate preparation for its epic, sprawling follow-up, The Bends. Building from the sweeping, three-guitar attack that punctuated the best moments of Pablo Honey, Radiohead create a grand and forceful sound that nevertheless resonates with anguish and despair -- it's cerebral anthemic rock. Occasionally, the album displays its influences, whether it's U2, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., or the Pixies, but Radiohead turn clichés inside out, making each song sound bracingly fresh. Thom Yorke's tortured lyrics give the album a melancholy undercurrent, as does the surging, textured music. But what makes The Bends so remarkable is that it marries such ambitious, and often challenging, instrumental soundscapes to songs that are at their cores hauntingly melodic and accessible. It makes the record compelling upon first listen, but it reveals new details with each listen, and soon it becomes apparent that with The Bends, Radiohead have reinvented anthemic rock.

Ill upload Krankenhaus? for you later imagist42. does anyone have any of their b-sides or the Waving Flags EP

I bought Krakenhaus? a while ago (although this doesn't mean it's not a worthy upload). I was referring to the LP, Do You Like Rock Music? Supposedly it leaked about a month ago, but I haven't seen it pop up anywhere I can get to.

How can you "un" DRM protect them?

Quick and dirty way: burn them to a CD, then rip them from that CD. Voila.

Also, Eulogies:

Eulogies - S/T

Nothing on AMG and I'm not sure who to compare them to, but all in all it's just quality indie rock. Well worth the time.

I'm in the mood for some Leonard Cohen. I'm also in the mood to share.

Quote from: AMG
At a time when a growing number of pop songwriters were embracing a more explicitly poetic approach in their lyrics, the 1967 debut album from Leonard Cohen introduced a songwriter who, rather than being inspired by "serious" literature, took up music after establishing himself as a published author and poet. The ten songs on Songs of Leonard Cohen were certainly beautifully constructed, artful in a way few (if any) other lyricists would approach for some time, but what's most striking about these songs isn't Cohen's technique, superb as it is, so much as his portraits of a world dominated by love and lust, rage and need, compassion and betrayal. While the relationship between men and women was often the framework for Cohen's songs (he didn't earn the nickname "the master of erotic despair" for nothing), he didn't write about love; rather, Cohen used the never-ending thrust and parry between the sexes as a jumping off point for his obsessive investigation of humanity's occasional kindness and frequent atrocities (both emotional and physical). Cohen's world view would be heady stuff at nearly any time and place, but coming in a year when pop music was only just beginning to be taken seriously, Songs of Leonard Cohen was a truly audacious achievement, as bold a challenge to pop music conventions as the other great debut of the year, The Velvet Underground & Nico, and a nearly perfectly realized product of his creative imagination. Producer John Simon added a touch of polish to Cohen's songs with his arrangements (originally Cohen wanted no accompaniment other than his guitar), though the results don't detract from his dry but emotive vocals; instead, they complement his lyrics with a thoughtful beauty and give the songs even greater strength. And a number of Cohen's finest songs appeared here, including the luminous "Suzanne," the subtly venomous "Master Song" and "Sisters of Mercy," which would later be used to memorable effect in Robert Altman's film McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Many artists work their whole career to create a work as singular and accomplished as Songs of Leonard Cohen, and Cohen worked this alchemy the first time he entered a recording studio; few musicians have ever created a more remarkable or enduring debut.

Quote from: AMG
A stunningly sophisticated leap into modern musical textures, I'm Your Man re-establishes Leonard Cohen's mastery. Against a backdrop of keyboards and propulsive rhythms, Cohen surveys the global landscape with a precise, unflinching eye: the opening "First We Take Manhattan" is an ominous fantasy of commercial success bundled in crypto-fascist imagery, while the remarkable "Everybody Knows" is a cynical catalog of the land mines littering the surface of love in the age of AIDS.

I'm beginning to feel bad downloading so much great stuff from this thread without contributing, so I've decided to chip in.

I notice that "Plays Pretty for Baby" by Nation of Ulysses was posted earlier, but I don't believe anyone has posted their debut LP, "13-Point Program to Destroy America." I don't consider it quite as strong as their follow-up effort, but it's still well worth a listen.

Quote
http://www.mediafire.com/?b3ldbovt0oz

I'll also include Sun Ra's "Jazz in Silhouette." This is a far more traditional jazz album than many of his later works, but it's an excellent starting point. "Enlightenment" and "Saturn" are nothing short of sublime.

Hopefully now I'll be able to look at myself in the mirror again.

Edit: I just realized the Nation of Ulysses link was missing a letter. Stupid me. It is now corrected.

In all fairness, I haven't yet had the chance to listen to all of Friend Opportunity. Just a couple songs here and there in the background when I'm over at someone else's place or something, not really paying attention.

If someone were to remedy that, of course, my opinion might change...

Quote from: AMG
Crashing in at just over half an hour long, Apple O' brims over with as many vivid bursts of musical and lyrical inspiration as Deerhoof's other albums, but offers a little more conceptual structure for the band's outbursts and childlike melodies. As the title implies, Apple O' (my eye) revolves around the band's musings on love, sex, and creation, and in its own way, their freewheeling, spontaneous style captures the feeling of being head over heels perfectly. Songs like "Dummy Discards a Heart" -- which loosely likens being in love to playing cards -- and "Flower" make such a joyful noise that it's difficult not to be swept up in the band's quirky but potent happiness. This invigorating feel seeps into even the quieter tracks on Apple O', such as "The Forbidden Fruits," a jazzy excursion in which Satomi Matsuzaki explores the phonetic beauty of the phrase "Leopard fur no store," and the strummy, folky finale "Blue Cash." Matsuzaki's vocals play a bigger part on this album than they do on Deerhoof's prior album, the excellent Reveille, which also gives Apple O' a poppier, more accessible bent than some of their earlier work; with their rippling guitars and sweet vocals, "Heart Failure," "Dinner for Two," and "L'Amour Stories" come close to being straightforwardly pretty. However, Deerhoof doesn't neglect the crazier side of their music, with the firecracker guitars on "My Diamond Star Car," the jerky rhythms of "Panda Panda Panda," and the abrasive "Hayley and Homer" providing a fix for the initiated and potentially irritating those unwilling to play along with the band's noisy naïveté. Not surprisingly, Apple O''s best moments mix the pretty with the powerful and unpredictable: "Sealed With a Kiss" mixes a singsong melody with elephantine basslines, fizzy guitars, a brass band, and what sounds like a chicken clucking. Meanwhile, the bittersweet "Apple Bomb" retells the Adam and Eve myth in elliptical, but surprisingly descriptive terms ("I said god/In the trees it's lovely/But it's lonely/With a bone/He will try to clone me/Make a mother/There will be another me"), before the song does indeed explode in a blaze of distortion. It doesn't matter that the parts of Deerhoof's music don't seem to go together at first -- their music aims directly at the right side of the brain, and is nearly successful as the Shaggs' work in making chaos sound cuddly and even kind of beautiful. Apple O' brings some order to Deerhoof's spontaneity, offering plenty of sweetness without forgetting their bite.

There isn't exactly a plethora of metal bands in the early 21st century that are eager to mix indie rock sounds into their noise, which makes the Savannah, GA-based quartet Baroness stand out from the overcrowded metallic pack. On their first-ever full-length release (and first for the Relapse label), 2007's The Red Album, the riffs are quite reminiscent of guitar-driven, post-hardcore bands out of the mid-'90s (a style which would later serve as the basis for emo bands several years later), while singer/guitarist John Baizley only knows one way to vocalize: holler, holler, holler. Think a more metallic Fugazi or Sunny Day Real Estate, and you're not far off from the brand of rock & roll that Baroness specializes in, as evidenced by such standouts as "The Birthing" and "Wanderlust." The Red Album shows that Baroness is one of a select number of acts that manage to be both mathematical and melodic at the same time.

Festooned with stickers announcing, "featuring members of the Arcade Fire," the debut from Canadian post-rock instrumentalists the Bell Orchestre owes as much allegiance to Tortoise, Jim O'Rourke, and Brian Eno as it does the lost childhood anthems that populate Funeral. That said, there's no harm in stealing a little buzz from a group that has recently found itself sharing the stage with, as well as being covered by, legends like U2 and David Bowie. Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light borrows enough Philip Glass repetition and John Cage minimalism to warrant its Orchestre title, but it's first and foremost a rock record. While it slows to a nearly forgettable pace about three quarters of the way in, standout tracks like "Lumieres, Pt. 1" and "Pt. 2," "Throw It on a Fire," and "Salvatore Amato" are soulful windows into the hearts of classical players who spent much of their time in school harboring dreams of decrepit rock clubs and buzzing amplifiers. They're young enough to veer off into any direction, but old enough keep their wits about them, resulting in a debut that sounds a lot like New York urbanites the Rachel's and the Clogs, but a little more dangerous.
