I figured I'd up some jazz for all

Yesterday New Quintet - Elle's Theme EP

Yesterday New Quintet - Bomb Shelter EP

http://www.mediafire.com/?cdmydj5emmy

the little allmusic write up on the group

Quote
Touted as a jazz group, but openly acknowledged as a solo project of left-coast rap producer Madlib, Yesterdays New Quintet boldly experimented with the fusion of hip-hop and jazz. Playing instruments live in his studio and then sampling and arranging the results, the first Yesterdays New Quintet long-player, Angles Without Edges, dropped in 2001. Madlib, who is no stranger to pseudonyms, went so far as to name each of the fictitious players in his group (Monk Hughes, Ahmad Miller, Joe McDurfey, and Malik Flowers, if you're curious). The debut was well received and the following year an album of Stevie Wonder covers, Stevie, Vol. 1, was released, while Stevie came out in 2004.

I can't tell you how many times I've either done homework or just sat and relaxed to this album. It keeps it just interesting enough that I can listen to it without getting bored. Here's allmusic:
Quote from: allmusic
This album is about moods -- digitally constructed moods, yes, but these constructions are powered by typical moody post-rock fuel: delicate piano, soft-spoken guitar, and laid-back drums. . . . Some field recordings are carefully used throughout the album, and the track list has obviously been sequenced in order to lull listeners into a comfort zone and leave them there. On first listen, Eingya evokes a lot of post-rock bands (and not the worst of them), even though it actually sits somewhere between that genre and a melodic form of experimental ambient. In any case, the music lacks some character to truly leave a mark, but it provides a wonderful listening experience nevertheless.

somebody PLEASE put up more stuff like this. i dont have enough music to sleep to.

SECONDED!  anything like this would be greatly appreciated.  plus i really wore out the postal service's 'give up' to fall asleep to

When I get off of work I'll up Selected Ambient Works Vol. II. It'll put your ass to sleep like a callous veterinarian.

I posted it a few pages back.

Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2

Quote from: allmusic
Selected Ambient Works, Vol. 2 is a more difficult and challenging album than Aphex Twin's previous collection. The music is all texture; there are only the faintest traces of beats and forward movement. Instead, all of these untitled tracks are long, unsettling electronic soundscapes, alternately quiet and confrontational; although most of the music is rather subdued, it is never easy listening. While some listeners may find this double-disc album dull (both discs run over 70 minutes), many listeners will be intrigued and fascinated by the intricately detailed music of Aphex Twin.

Actually, more Gerry Mulligan would be nice, man.

As you wish.

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?d4oafjbbx5z
Gerry Mulligan and the Concert Jazz Band at the Village Vanguard.

Recorded 1960. Mulligan was always musically restless. Some time after disbanding the pianoless quartet in the 1950s (although he continued with the format for a little while without Chet Baker) Mulligan formed the Concert Jazz Band. As the name suggests, this was a band that was devoted to playing live - in fact, they never went into a studio. Mulligan had first made his mark in jazz a composer and arranger, particularly for the big bands that were dominant in jazz until the postwar-bebop era. In many ways Mulligan was a traditionalist, so it probably wasn't surprising that he'd want to form his own big band.

Nonetheless, this is a big band in a noticeably different vein from those of the swing era. Instead of relying on powerful repeated riffs as had most of the earlier big bands (especially the classic Basie band of the 30s), the Concert Jazz Band is an altogether lighter, freer entity - much like Mulligan's baritone saxophone playing itself. Of course, when the band opens all the stops it's that much more powerful because of the restraint that's otherwise on show.

Like all the great jazz composers, Mulligan also knew his way around a piano. On this recording he doubles on this instrument, filling out the rhythm section, as well as playing his sax.

Just because I haven't contributed in a while and I'm sure almost no-one on this board has it:

Quote
Local H's second album, 1996's As Good as Dead, was a brave and powerful (though ultimately very depressing) concept piece about a guy utterly defeated by his inability to get out of the nowhere town where he grew up. In one sense, Local H's follow-up, 1998's Pack Up the Cats, can be seen as a companion piece, a song cycle that follows a small town rock dude as he decides to sell out and shoot for the big time -- and fails miserably, ending up farther in the hole than he started. Both ironically and appropriately, Pack Up the Cats is a good bit glossier and more engaging than As Good as Dead, not to mention a lot funnier; Roy Thomas Baker's production files down a few of the band's jagged edges and brings out the hooks in Scott Lucas' melodies while maintaining the grit of Lucas' guitar and the hard punch of Joe Daniels' drums. But just as part of what made As Good as Dead so harrowing was the fact that Lucas obviously saw a bit of himself in his principal character, Pack Up the Cats was Local H's make-or-break third album, and while it's a clear bid for a bigger place in the spotlight, at the same time Lucas and Daniels obviously understood and couldn't help commenting on the odds against them: The album's catchiest track, "All the Kids Are Right," is a superbly anthemic fist-pumping rocker about a band playing the worst show of its life. (Significantly, "All the Kids Are Right" was starting to climb the charts when Polygram's merger with Universal effectively killed the album -- a real-world disaster even Lucas couldn't predict.) While Pack Up the Cats' ironies aren't always subtle, they also bear the ring of truth, and the duo's tough but hooky punch carries the album along through tales of busted romances, bad record deals, and annoying roadies. Lots of musicians have written songs about the ups and downs of their lives in the music biz, but few have done so with as much self-searching honesty and humor -- mostly of the "whistling past the graveyard" variety -- as Local H did on Pack Up the Cats.
[/size]

What the review does not talk about is how each song on this disk flows into the next, with themes recurring as you go along.  "All the Kids Are Right" is the only song that this does not hold true to; in fact it feels like it was shoe-horned in from a different cd.  Whoever wrote this review is not familar with Local H, or he would realize that most of Scott's writing is autobiographical and that each cd deals has an over-arching theme of where Scott is in life at that particular time.

Here is some Elliott Smith, because the mood kicked in for the first time in a long time. Sometimes shuffle mode is just so wonderful.

XO

Quote
AMG: A year before his major-label debut, XO, was released, it seemed unlikely that Elliott Smith would even be on a major, let alone having his record be one of the more anticipated releases of 1998. He had certainly earned a great deal of critical respect with his low-key, acoustic indie records and was emerging as a respected songwriter, but he hadn't made much of an impression outside of journalists, record collectors, and indie rockers. An Oscar nomination can change things, however. "Miss Misery," one of Smith's elegantly elegiac songs for Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting, unexpectedly earned an Academy Award nomination, and he was immediately thrust into the spotlight. He was reluctant to embrace instant celebrity, yet he didn't refuse a contract with DreamWorks, and he didn't shy away from turning XO into a glorious fruition of his talents. Smith's songs remain intensely introspective, yet the lush, Beatlesque production provides a terrifically charming counterpoint. His sweetly dark melodies are vividly brought to life with the detailed arrangements, and they sell Smith's tormented songs -- it's easy to get caught up in the tunes and the sound of the record, then realize later what the songs are actually about. That's a sign of a good craftsman, and XO proves that not only can Elliott Smith craft a song, but he knows how to make an alluring pop record as well.

New Moon - Discs 1 & 2

Quote
AMG: Before he died in 2003, Elliott Smith released five albums (plus the posthumous From a Basement on the Hill), but he had dozens and dozens of songs recorded, either alone on a four track or with friends in various studio settings, that had never seen the light of day. Kill Rock Stars -- the label for which he made arguably two of his best records, 1995's Elliott Smith and 1997's Either/Or -- with help from the late singer's archivist, Larry Crane, collected a handful of these pieces, added extensive and often personal liner notes, and made them available to the public under the title New Moon. Written and recorded between 1994 and 1997, the 24 tracks on New Moon showcase Smith at his most instinctive and natural, when he uses hardly more than his (double-tracked) voice and his guitar. Though some of the songs here, especially the earlier ones, can be quite simple, even raw at times, there's a sad, clean sweetness that comes through despite the occasional bit of tape hiss, of tinny chords. In fact, much was done by the album's producers to maintain the integrity of Smith's original tracks, remixing them only when absolutely necessary (the only song that took vocal and instrumental elements from two different sessions is "New Disaster," and is clearly marked as such). This means that New Moon embodies an unadulterated Smith, singing and playing songs how he wanted to, carefully layering his voice and adding the occasional harmony, the second guitar, the subtle drum tap -- and with little of the full-band sound he moved into after he left KRS and went to a major label -- but it doesn't mean that the pieces sound incomplete or unprofessional; almost all them could've been included on one of Smith's albums, and in fact many of them were near to making the cut. "Looking Over My Shoulder" has a great hook, catchy in that monotonously melodic kind of way Smith knew how to do best. "You're always coming over with all of your friends and all their opinions I don't want to know," he sings, a slight anger in his voice, while "All Cleaned Out" reveals a kind of pity for his subject. There's a depth of emotion in New Moon, more than pure sadness, seen in his cover of Big Star's "Thirteen," recorded live in DJ Rob Jones's basement and played back later on air, the near indignation of "Georgia, Georgia," the fast picking on "Almost Over." Even the rendition of "Miss Misery" included here, the song that propelled him into the spotlight, has a lightness that doesn't exist in the final product. Instead of that hauntingly sad refrain, that last plea, "Do you miss me, miss misery like you say you do?" Smith hints at a different ending. "'Cause it's all right, some enchanted night I'll be with you," he sings. There's distant hope for redemption, for resolution here, something that was not present in the later version. In fact, that's the overall feeling that New Moon gives, a sense of opportunity, of possibility, of life within the bleak reality. The album portrays a more stable Smith and promises something brilliant to come, full of words and chords that will touch thousands, alluding to the future and the past, but mostly, in its own quiet way, screaming to show off the immense talents of one man and his songs.

I remember you talking about uploading those a while back, and then it never materialized.  I was sad.  But now I'm happy!

Yes please Mr. Darryl, sir.

They're on their way right now. I didn't really want 8 people to say please, I just wanted to see how many people would post without doing it. Y'know, those people are SELFISH.
It never materialised before because I was using box.net, which seems to impossible for me to upload to. I gave up and kinda forgot about it. To make up for all the hollow promises, I'm just going to post all the bootlegs I have and some nice OOP albums.

Sorry this took so long.  For some reason I was having problems uploading for what seemed like an age.  Things seem to be working properly again, so here it is!  I am afraid that since these took so long to upload, and work is rather busy today there will be nothing more than links.  Here it is:

Live at the House of Tribe by Wynton Marsalis
Code: [Select]

Hang on Little Tomato by Pink Martini
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?8jfvrmbkiti
Bande A Part by Nouvelle Vague
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?c9g5exyhtrg
And lastly, this is an album I had asked for previously (even though I am not supposed to), but had zero luck in producing.  Yay for finally finding it!

Tout New Age by A Sunny Day in Glasgow
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?7zk1uzkibwg
This was originally a tour only EP that I went crazy looking for forever as I was rather unlucky and didn't get to see them perform. Fortunately once their tour came to a close, it was released digitally. This EP is just a collection of songs that were cut from the LP (which is sometimes understandable), and it is actually slightly different from Scribble Mural Comic Journal. It bears the seeds of their album--it carries the same playful pop/shoegaze vibe--yet they veer away from some of the swirling guitars and meandering jangles and started to experiment more with other sounds (hand clapping anyone? no seriously, I am talking applause). With the closing song the vocals actually make a much stronger appearance than in any of their other tracks and consequently give us the closest thing to a vocal pop song we will get, and it is well appreciated. This last track is A Sunny Day in Glasgow's Anthem, and it serves to tie everything together and bring closure to not only this EP, but their work as a whole up to this point.  I thought it worth a listen.  :)

He can be, yes.  I don't think that detracts from what he does well though.  I mean, I understand that his ideas on jazz are controversial, but I can appreciate that he is quite brilliant (his concerto performances are very good, but I wasn't sure how classical shit would go over here).  I am pretty sure there are probably a lot of ass holes that people like anyway.  It is inexplicable.  But apparently everyone thinks this.  :P

Here is some classic megafine 1960's psychedelia for you guys.  This album is really cool.  If you listen to this album the first time you take acid you will probably find it outrageously important for some reason.

Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies - The American Metaphysical Circus

Quote
The American Metaphysical Circus is a landmark psychedelic recording of the late 1960's, largely unparalleled in having remained in print for nearly 20 years. It was recorded by Joseph "Joe" Byrd after his departure from the band The United States Of America, and featured some of the earliest recorded work in rock music utilizing extensive use of synthesizers and vocoder, along with an extended group of West Coast studio musicians he named as Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies.

The album is most noted for "The Sub-Sylvian Litanies" which opened Side A. This three part-suite has been described as [1] "an entire acid trip in 11 minutes". Other album highlights include the similarly-oriented "The Elephant At The Door", and the politically-charged "Invisible Man", written for and aimed squarely at President Lyndon B. Johnson. Two of the more unusual tracks on the record are "Mister Fourth Of July" - a ragtime tune complete with scratchy 78RPM-style effects, and "Leisure World", featuring narration from long-time ABC voice-over and "Ghoulardi" originator Ernie Anderson in an ode to California's first retirement mega-community.

Dark mellow ambience from Bohren and der Club of Gore:

Black Earth, 2002: http://www.mediafire.com/?1wnjtwwbtdq

Sunset Mission, 2000: http://www.mediafire.com/?6odnt86surt

(Wiki sez: "Bohren & der Club of Gore is a band founded in 1992 in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany by Thorsten Benning, Morten Gass, Robin Rodenberg and Reiner Henseleit. Originally, members of Bohren started out playing in various hardcore bands such as 7 Inch Boots and Chronical Diarrhoea. In 1992 they produced a crossover of jazz, hardcore, and ambient, which they self described as an "unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds". Henseleit left the band in 1996 and was replaced by Christoph Clöser in 1997, replacing the guitar with a saxophone at the same time.")

Both of these were uploaded many a pages ago. But they're still spectacular. And given that both Soundtracks for the Blind and Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space have been uploaded about six times each, I think this is okay.

Oh, I am so embarrassed.  I should insert a rolling-eye smiley here.

In penance for my internet sin, I'll post something I'm sure no-one here has:

A live recording of Gamelan Nyai Saraswati, an ensemble of the Dept of Music, College of Arts & Sciences at UNC Chapel Hill.
Entitled "Molak-Malik, An Evening of Musical Transposition", it is a great introduction to gamelan music of Java.
I accidentally uploaded this one instead of the other gamelan album I wanted to share, so this'll do for now.

I'm more partial to The United States of America's S/T, which has a song titled The American Metaphysical Circus.  Will up it sometime in the next 3 days, possibly later tonight.

Hey I posted two CDs by Stars of the Lid a long ways back.  Let's see if they still work!

Edit:
That's a big no.  Uploading them again, if that's okay with everyone

Sort of curious how you got those discs onto mediafire, though, unless you reduced bitrates. Tree by itself is something like 24 megabytes on my HD.

Yeah, the original plan was to put them up in V0 but that wouldn't fit, so I think they're in 160KB/S, from memory (I'm not at home at the moment so I can't check)

So, here's The United States of America - S/T.  Some would call it the greatest psychedelic record ever made.  Mostly composed by Joe Byrd of Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies, which onewheel posted earlier.  So if you liked that, you'll probably love this.  Here's what allmusic has to say:

Quote from: allmusic
Originally released on Columbia in 1968, The United States of America is one of the legendary pure psychedelic space records. Some of the harder-rocking tunes have a fun house recklessness that recalls aspects of early Pink Floyd and the Velvet Underground at their freakiest; the sedate, exquisitely orchestrated ballads, especially "Cloud Song" and the wonderfully titled "Love Song for the Dead Che," are among the best relics of dreamy psychedelia. Occasionally things get too excessive and self-conscious, and the attempts at comedy are a bit flat, but otherwise this is a near classic.

Refresh my memory - Is that old-timey, one-hit wonder Nada Surf, or indie revival Nada Surf? Both are good, but that one hit single they had is something I've always wanted to get ahold of but never managed to.

Hey, just to throw out some information. A little while ago someone posted the free ep by the new lows and asked about them having any more music out. Well i got into that ep and also looked for something else by them and found nothing. I just checked out their myspace and this is what I found under the title "new cd recorded":

Here's something for Caspian and the doom/drone heads ...

5ive - Telestic Disfracture

Quote
Like a swirling vortex spinning towards infinity in the far reaches of outer space, the bilateral commission known as 5IVE is perpetually stretching the outer limits of the hearing threshold, proving the sonic postulation that one may not be able to hear, but can definitely feel those sub-harmonic registers below 20Hz. Through a veritable fleet of vintage speaker cabinets and a drum kit that packs enough wallop to fell a herd of elephant, 5IVE's
Ben Carr (guitars, amps) and Charlie Harrold (skins) have achieved the kind of instrumental post-Kyuss density that sweeps across the continental divide with a sense of inherent purpose and analog fidelity, exposing "stoner rock" as trite and ordinary once and for all. Eschewing binary code for the warmth and tone of the two-inch reel, this Boston duo have published their first jeremiad via Tortuga Recordings (initial pressing on vinyl only) with subsequent transmissions (and rumored appearance from Milligram vocalist Jonah Jenkins) to follow later this year. Surrounded by an ocean of garish mixed metaphors and run-on sentences, 5IVE have turned out the backdrop for a seething fever dream, the soundtrack for the arrival of the four horsemen. Repent or burn. (Tortuga Recordings) By: J. Bennett

Code: [Select]
http://www.sendspace.com/file/2al9f9
I also found a review that concluded with "Well, if the hardcore post-metal of Celestial-era Isis, the volume extremities of early Mogwai and the cosmic side of desert-rockers Kyuss (Asteroid, from Welcome to Sky Valley, is a Telestic root, no doubt about it) are the kind of things that swell your balloons with hard-rocking joy, there's every chance that 5ive's cathartic rage could rupture them altogether... but that's part of the fun, right?"

Needless to say this album is pretty sweet.  Highly recommended.

Yeah, that's not them.  This 5ive is a guitarist and a drummer from Boston.

The one album I just upped, if played loud enough, could probably kill at least one member of the boy-band 5ive before it hit track 4.

As promised to DynamiteKid, here is that new Mars Volta.

I find that cover to be ugly. I'm not even sure it's the real cover, there's 4 or 5 "psychedelic" paintings associated with "Bedlam in Goliath"

Anyway, here be The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath.
