From a Basement on the Hill was intended to be a double album, but Smith died before all the tracks could be finalised. Basement II is the demos of the other songs.

Man, all this Dischordness makes me want to upload The Warmers' full-length album. I will when I get out of lecture. I also have the vast majority of Fugazi's discography, but most of it is in .wma.

God, why the hell are two of my classes at night...

I introduced myself already, thanks for the heads up.

I have a bunch of links that are still alive, and that I have posted in another forum. I thought it would be cool to post them here. They are many, so I will not write a description of the albums, sorry!

There is a little of everything, enjoy.

Zbigniew Preisner - La Double Vie De Véronique (P 1991)

That is one of the most beautiful OST's ever, I guess it is "modern classical". The movie was directed by Kieszlowski

DJ Danger Mouse - The Grey Album (P 2004)

hip-hop? mash up of The Beatles's white album and Jay-Z's Back album. Danger mouse has reincarnated recently as a part of Gnarls barkley.

Esmerine - Aurora (P 2005)

This is just beautiful stuff, cellos and other classical instruments

The Dead Texan (P 2004)

The label is Kranky, that is a lot to say. This is ambient music.

Tunng - Comments Of The Inner Chorus (P 2006)

One of my favorite albums of 2007 was Tunng's, this is their previous one. I guess this is folktronica

Porcupine Tree - Up The Downstair

A classic of Porcupine Tree, very psychedelic. From the Delerium years.

The RZA - Afro Samurai Soundtrack (P 2007)

The OST of the cartoon series Afro Samurai.... a, sort of, manga version of Jarmusch's Ghost Dog (the stories are not similar, though)

M.C. Solaar - Chapitre 7 (P 2007)

French Hip hop, this guy is the s*** over there (as much as I know  )

Odd Nosdam - Level Live Wires (P 2007)

Member of CLOUDdead,a nd an important part of the Anticon label. This is "instrumental hip hop"

Dakota Suite - Waiting For The Dawn To Crawl Through And Take Away Your Life (P 2007)

Dakota suite is a band (mmmh, one guy and a cast) that plays sad and mellow music. I love them.

The Magnetic Fields - Get Lost (P 1995)

80's sounds with a cool twist, I don't know how to describe this, IT IS THE MAGNETIC FIELDS!!

Larsen - Musm II (P 2007)

XXL - Ciautistico! (P 2005)

XXL - Spicchiology? (P 2007)

Larsen is an italian band that does this experimental pop "a la italiana". One of its members released an excellent album last year under the name (r). XXL is Xiu Xiu and Larsen together. It is weird.

Neu! - Neu! 75 (P 1975)

Neu! 1 (P 1972)

Neu! 2 (P 1973)

Neu! 4

Neu! = seminal kraut rock band

Einstürzende Neubauten - Alles Wieder Offen (P 2007)

The latest release by these (crazy) germans. Not so industrial as their previous albums, but worth a listen. One of the member of this band was a member of the bad seeds

Pescado Rabioso - 2 part 1
Pescado Rabioso - 2 part 2

Blues from Argentina in the 70's. Very good.

Goran Bregovic - Karmen (With A Happy End)

The latest album by Goran Bregovic, he specializes in OST's, most of them for Emir Kusturica. Excellent "gypsy" music.

Beef Terminal - Anger Do Not Enter (P 2005)

Beef Terminal - The Isolationist (P 2003)

A little IDM, a little ambient. I would say, try The Isolationist first, I like it better

Eight states' attorneys general have filed charges against R. J. Reynolds because the alleged "advertorial" section contains cartoons, which are forbidden in tobacco advertising.

On a side note: my friend has been recommending Chopin lately, and I realized I've never had the right introduction to most classical music.
Any recommendations (composer and orchestra/conductors, specific recordings, etc)?

I thought I would upload Beach House's self titled debut because Devotion was extremely popular.

allmusic:
Quote
Matching the hypnotic allure of Nico and Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, Beach House sorceress Victoria Legrand croons "Love you all the time/even though you're not mine" on "Saltwater," the stunning album opener to the band's self-titled debut, and such simple words never sounded so lovely. Joining Legrand is her childhood friend Alex Scally, who delivers spellbinding instrumentation throughout these nine heavy-hearted melodies. It's their sound as a whole that really makes Beach House an interesting listen; Legrand's vocals tread so lightly throughout, making it easy to get lost in the gossamer beauty of the band's work, particularly on "Tokyo Witch" and "Auburn and Ivory." Tightly woven arrangements of organs, percussion, and guitars (which recall the work of Legrand's uncle, famed French composer Michel Legrand) delicately waltz around her haunting presentation, while the golden slumbers of "Apple Orchard" and "Lovelier Girl" offer a sweetly psychedelic sound. The exquisiteness of Beach House's debut album should not go unnoticed -- it's one of the most mystical indie pop surprises to arrive in 2006. Perhaps they really do have a magic touch?

Well, two people is enough for me to get started.  If there are major objections to the amount of classical music I will be posting, just tell me to stop (although I do recommend giving it a try).  I decided to begin with something that I thought a lot of people would recognize and enjoy:

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?7smnxdyw2ov
Ennio Morricone is a rather remarkable composer.  Most of the work he has done has been in the form of film scores for movies such as The Mission, The Untouchables, Cinema Paradiso, and many others.  He received the Lifetime Achievement Award (only the second composer ever to achieve this), and is generally just a whole lot of kick ass.  Yo-Yo Ma is another really well known name, and I rather begrudgingly allow him the title of one of the greatest cello performers (I am a cellist so there is a little envy in there ).  Ennio Morricone's sense of melody and composition is complimented by Ma's overwhelming ability to recognize and interpret melody with impeccable phrasing.  I initially thought that arranging Morricone's music to feature the cello as a solo instrument would be insufficient to capture some of the more subtle traits of Morricone's work, but upon listening to this album it is obvious how perfect the congruence is.

Yo-Yo Ma is more well known for some of his work with popular classical pieces such as The Bach Cello Suites (I personally think he butchered them horribly, and it is my least favourite performance pretty much ever), but I personally think that his true ability is very much present in projects such as this collaborative effort with Morricone.  Obviously, I highly recommend giving this a listen.  :)

Working on the next upload.  It will probably be a while as I have to work, but there should be another post sometime this afternoon.

Just a quick recommendation.  Zerodrone said it earlier, but it seems not to have been too noticed.  Try not to link to albums directly.  It is a much better idea to enclose the links in the code tags ([code ][/code ]) so that you are required to copy and paste the link in your browser.  This can prevent site activity of sites like mediafire from being traced back to these forums.  The absolute last thing I'd want would be Jeph getting in some sort of trouble for the copywritten content on the board.

You, know before I looked at this thread today, I was thinking, "Boy, do I need to listen to some Fugazi to see if I like it"
Thank all of you.

Also, that Dead Texan album is very good.  It's by one of the guys in Stars of the Lid, which I uploaded like a week ago.

I also see that there is some need for classical music.  I will have two of my favorite symphonies, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, the Bach Cello Suites, and some Chopin piano pieces up later today.

...And here some of them are

This one's self explanatory, but if want to know more about it, here's the Wikipedia article.

Ludvig van Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 in D Minor "Choral"

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?1yk0b0gn1lo
Stravinsky was best known for his ballets (check out The Rite of Spring, one of the defining classical pieces of the 20th century), and his first ballet, The Firebird, is no exception.  Again, the Wikipedia article.

Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird Suite (1919 Version)

Code: [Select]

I'll get more up later...

Eliliott never finished recording of from a basment on the hill... he tried to make a new album multiple times and ended up trashing them. after his death a guy he was working with in the studio produced the album and put it out (which is why that shitty ostrich chirping song is on there). his parents however did not want many of the songs on there, such as stickman, and other songs revealing his drug addiction and depression (although that is pretty much what most of his stuff is about). then the record was released yada yada yada. from a basement on the hill 2 is a(n unofficial internet) release of many unreleased songs. many songs on this album ended up on new moon. but these songs are not demo quality songs they are just as good quality as from a basement on the hill 1. ill upload it sometime. i always loved both f.a.b.o.n.t.h. albums... but it may not dazzle you like it dazzled me because of new moon....

If you don't know My Morning Jacket here's a little write up from all music

Quote
My Morning Jacket is a four-piece band from Louisville, KY, built solidly around the vocal and songwriting talent of group leader Jim James. Their sound is lonesome, haunting, almost classic country at times, and that voice -- James' voice shares the same section of that old country highway with the familiar sounds of Neil Young, yet sounds right at home here in the world of independent American pop music, alongside contemporary singers like the Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne and Galaxie 500's Dean Wareham. Like Galaxie 500, My Morning Jacket weaves songs and sounds together perfectly -- underneath the big open sky filled with bright stars of course -- never allowing the heavy reverb (and the reverb is definitely heavy) to subtract anything from the visual lyrics, or from the simple beauty of the songs themselves.

Quote from: Sean Gilchris
This is the debut cd of this Washington, DC trio. The first thing you'll notice is the simple, black and white packaging and the sparse use of liner notes. What you will then notice about the Warmers music is that it is also quite simplistic. You can hear it in the single note riffs of Alec Mackaye's (ignition) guitar on "Snakecharmer" that brings to mind Gang of Four. While it would be easy to cheat and say this sounds like Fugazi, there are still hints of that band here. Alec's brother Ian (fugazi) handles the production duties and it was recorded at DC's legendary Inner Ear studios (engineered by Don Zientara) so the sound is perfect. What drives this record is the drumming of Amy Farina (ex-Lois) who plays around and all over the melodies. She turns in some of the most impressive, and original drumming heard in a long time. Both bassist Juan Carrera (ex-Lois) and Mackaye trade off on lead vocals, Carerra's voice is warm and somewhat reminiscent of David Byrne while Mackaye's is higher and more raw, not unlike brother Ian's voice. You can't go wrong with a label that sells CDs for $9 ppd. The Warmers self titled cd is one of the best Dischord releases of all time. You will not be disappointed. Sadly the band recently called it quits.

Matt Elliott - Failing Songs

The second in a proposed trilogy (which began with Drinking Songs), this album from last year is a beautiful mix of baroque chamber music, Eastern European folk, acoustic hymns, singalongs, electronica and depression.  Some of you may be familiar with Matt as previously being associated with Flying Saucer Attack and recording four studio albums as seminal Bristol electronic act The Third Eye Foundation, perhaps most famous for the song "Lost" and several other short musical bits which appear in the film Amelie, as well as being greatly admired for his first two albums - Semtex and Ghost - which were genuinely frightening, spooky combinations of drum-n-bass, psychedelic noise, and early-20th-century samples of things such as Russian operas.

Holy shit Oscaio, awesome post. Especially Magnetic Fields - I think I have basically their discography.

The Wayward Bus/Distant Plastic Trees, Get Lost, 69 Love Songs, i, Holiday, Charm of the Highway Strip, The House Of Tomorrow EP, DIstortion

plus the Pieces of April soundtrack which is Stephin Merritt with his various bands.

and the two full Future Bible Heroes albums (one's not ripped on my computer but I'm pretty sure it's in my CD binder).

If anyone wants just ask.

And bulldawg, thanks for the Elliott Smith! Speaking of, I just uploaded the Roman Candle album for a friend who had everything but, so here:

Oh, you'll all thank me so hard when I upload the Pailhead EP. Best Mackaye project ever.

Wow, I thought I was one of the only people who still remember Pailhead.  Love that EP.

Be forewarned, Uncle Al's been making a lot of noise lately about making swan song albums for all his projects (well, not counting Acid Horse or PTP). Pailhead's on the list. I'll believe it when I see it.

Mic City Sons is very good. However, I downloaded Cop & Speeder once and was not very impressed, it just sounded like junior varsity Jawbox.

I do like that one song "Everybody Has It", but I don't know what release it's from.

More classical music!

A Collection of some Nocturnes, Waltzes, Etudes, and other various piano pieces.  This one is very special to me because I played about half of these in high school.  Personal favorites are the Etude in C Minor and the Ballade.  Wikipedia

Debussy: Piano Works Composed by Claude Debussy and Performed by Pascal Rogé

Disc 1:

Disc 2:
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?8ny5ngwjtps
This is one of my favourite recordings of Debussy's work.  Rogé is a very expressive pianist, and I find that listening to his recordings takes pieces that I have heard several times and brings something fresh to them.  Stylistically speaking, I prefer his sound because he is not as heavy on the pedal as some are when performing Debussy.  This allows for a much purer tonal quality and the melodies and counter melodies come through much clearer and are much more brilliant.  I suppose the one complaint I have about Rogé is that he has a tendency to interpret some pieces rather slowly for my liking, but overall this is not really an issue.  My favourite tracks are La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral) and Claire de lune (Moonlight).

There is a lot of very good information that can be found on Claude Debussy on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debussy) and several external links that lead to the history behind his work, etc.

Who is performing the cello suites?  I was just uploading what I consider to be the best recording of them (performed by Pierre Fournier), so if it is a different rendition than I will just go ahead and post it anyway.

I have no idea how I avoided Spoon until now. It had to have been a conscious effort.
I have spent all day listening to Gimme Fiction, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, and Kill the Moonlight.

I'm take a hard look through my music for something to upload, but to be honest, I now have to scroll quite a ways to get to albums that aren't from this thread.

The Harder They Come Soundtrack

Quote from: AMG
In 1973, when the movie The Harder They Come was released, reggae was not on the radar screen of American pop culture. The soundtrack went a ways toward changing that situation. It is a collection of consistently excellent early reggae songs by artists who went on to thrive with reggae's increased popularity and others for whom this is the most well-known vehicle. Jimmy Cliff is both the star of the movie and the headliner on the soundtrack. He contributes three excellent songs: the hymnal "Many Rivers to Cross," "You Can Get It If You Really Want," and "The Harder They Come" (the latter two are repeated at the end of the album, but you probably wanted to hear them again anyway). Interestingly, the better production values of his songs actually seems to detract from them when compared to the rougher, but less sanitized, mixes of the other tracks. All the songs on this collection are excellent, but some truly stand out. Toots & the Maytals deliver two high-energy songs with "Sweet and Dandy" and "Pressure Drop" (covered by the Clash among others). Scotty develops a mellow, loping groove on "Stop That Train" (not the same as the Wailers' song by the same name) and the Slickers prove on "Johnny Too Bad" that you don't have to spout profanity or graphic violence to convey danger. The Harder They Come is strongly recommended both for the casual listener interested in getting a sense of reggae music and the more serious enthusiast. Collections don't come much better than this.

If anyone got that Matt Elliott and wants to hear the other end of his musical spectrum, I'll upload Semtex.  It's basically impossible to find in stores and has been out of print for over a decade (and for some reason wasn't included in the recent Third Eye Foundation Collected Works) so I don't even feel remotely bad about it.

Rain Dogs - Tom Waits

Quote
With its jarring rhythms and unusual instrumentation — marimba, accordion, various percussion — as well as its frequently surreal lyrics, Rain Dogs is very much a follow-up to Swordfishtrombones, which is to say that it sounds for the most part like The Threepenny Opera being sung by Howlin' Wolf. The chief musical difference is the introduction of guitarist Marc Ribot, who adds his noisy leads to the general cacophony. But Rain Dogs is sprawling where its predecessor had been focused: Tom Waits' lyrics here sometimes are imaginative to the point of obscurity, seemingly chosen to fit the rhythms rather than for sense. In the course of 19 tracks and 54 minutes, Waits sometimes goes back to the more conventional music of his earlier records, which seems like a retreat, though such tracks as the catchy "Hang Down Your Head," "Time," and especially "Downtown Train" (frequently covered and finally turned into a Top Ten hit by Rod Stewart five years later) provide some relief as well as variety. Rain Dogs can't surprise as Swordfishtrombones had, and in his attempt to continue in the direction suggested by that album, Waits occasionally borders on the chaotic (which may only be to say that, like most of his records, this one is uneven). But much of the music matches the earlier album, and there is so much of it that that is enough to qualify Rain Dogs as one of Waits' better albums.

Desertshore - Nico

Quote
While Nico was the member of the Velvet Underground who had had the least experience in music prior to joining the group (while she had recorded a pop single in England, she'd never been a member of a working band before Andy Warhol introduced her to the Velvets), she was also the one who strayed farthest from traditional rock & roll after her brief tenure with the band, and by the time she recorded Desertshore, her work had little (if anything) to do with traditional Western pop. John Cale, who produced and arranged Desertshore, once described the music as having more to do with 20th century classical music than anything else, and while that may be going a bit far to make a point, even compared to the avant-rock frenzy of the Velvet Underground's early material, Desertshore is challenging stuff. Nico's dour Teutonic monotone is a compelling but hardly welcoming vocal presence, and the songs, centered around the steady drone of her harmonium, are often grim meditations on fate that are crafted and performed with inarguable skill and intelligence, but are also a bit samey, and the album's downbeat tone gets to be rough sledding by the end of side two. Cale's arrangements are superb throughout, and "My Only Child," "Afraid," and "The Falconer" are quite beautiful in their own ascetic way, but like the bulk of Nico's repertoire, Desertshore is an album practically designed to polarize its listeners; you'll either embrace it's darkness or give up on it before the end of side one. Then again, given the thoroughly uncompromising nature of her career as a musician, that's probably just what Nico had in mind.

Absolutego - Boris

Quote
Recorded in 1996, this album was Boris' full-length debut, and it showed right away that this band wasn't messing around. In its original version, it consisted of one 65-minute track of oozing, slow motion, Melvins-inspired drone rock. (The U.S. release, put out in 2001 by Southern Lord, adds an additional bonus track, the 7:50 "Dronevil." And talk about buildups, this thing starts with a full 25 minutes of heavily down-tuned bass rumblings and doom-instilling guitar feedback before the drums and vocals finally kick in with the big payoff. From there, the band moves through about 15 minutes of thick, fuzzed-out trance rock (again, mostly instrumental) before the drums exit again, leaving in their wake a howling, droning mass of layered guitar feedback. The sound of this is truly massive and unsettling. It takes a good 25 more minutes for the wreckage to clear and the track to finally wind down to a close — it seems strange to say it, but anything less would have seemed like an abrupt halt, such is the magnitude of this track. The aptly titled "Dronevil"'s oscillating, distorted sub-bass drones are also menacing and impressive, although arguably a bit anticlimactic in this context. In any case, suffice it to say that this album is not for novices, but for anyone whose record collection includes Sleep's Jerusalem, Earth 2, Naked City's Leng Tch'e, and/or more than a couple of the Melvins' earlier LPs, this Mt. Everest of droning doom is probably a necessary addition.

Soul Discharge - The Boredoms

Quote
For American and European audiences, Boremania began with this album. Released on the then hyperhip Shimmy-Disc, Soul Discharge turned out to be the calling card for a whole host of Japanese noise/psychedelic bands to make the leap from notoriety at home to cult status worldwide. Time hasn't dulled the impact of the album, as astonishing then as it is now. Playing what the liner notes describe (with a nod to George Clinton), as "psychoalphadiscobetaudioaquadoloop sound," Soul beggars easy description, taking the band's previous work to an even more compelling level of insanity. The Butthole Surfers were always the easiest point of comparison, but even that doesn't fully capture what's at play. Tempo shifts occur as a matter of course, lyrics are flat-out unintelligible in no matter what language they're sung, or rather screamed, and guitars seem to randomly trip, sprawl, and vomit over each other as roiling and rolling drums drive the whole thing along (Human Rich Vox Y and No. 1 Y, aka Yoshimi, make for a killer dual-percussionist team). Simply put, it's wonderful. The bandmembers' sense of humor and sheer fun predominate more than anything else, taking sonics most thrash metal bands would kill for and making them the equivalent of a sugar/caffeine high. Definitely one of the funnier moments occur when "52 Boredom (Club Mix)" begins almost exactly like a B-52's song, and then freaks out completely within seconds. Another strength of the band is how they sneak in catchy bits amidst weirdness, like the almost straightforward, hip-shaking break in "Sun, Gun, Run" or the heavy-duty riff in "TV Scorpion." Adding the squealing insanities of Yamatsuka Eye and P-We YY results in something that even Captain Beefheart might never have been able to create.
