Dirty Three have a gift for creating unforgettably emotive instrumental soundscapes, and Horse Stories demonstrates this to great effect. The versatility of Warren Ellis' violin playing is what drives Horse Stories, but although the violin is the focal point, Mick Turner's guitar and Jim White's drumming are vital elements in making Dirty Three's sound so compelling. The tracks here are widely varied, from slow, languid pieces like "1000 Miles" and "At the Bar" and wild dances like "Red" and "I Remember a Time When Once You Used to Love Me" to stunningly beautiful tracks like the aptly titled "Hope." It is fitting that Horse Stories helped Dirty Three reach a wider audience than they had with their earlier efforts, as it was an album that saw them reach new heights in creativity.

You would be hard pressed to find a veteran musician as dedicated to heavy metal as Eric Peterson. The Testament guitarist has been waving the thrash metal flag for the better part of three decades through commercial highs and lows. Throughout the mid-90’s, when most of his peers either threw in the towel or altered their sound to try and fit whatever the current trends were, Peterson went the other way, taking his band’s sound into even heavier territories. The Formation of Damnation is the Bay Area legends’ first new studio album in years and it’s a beast of a collection! From the epic march of instrumental opener, “For The Glory Of...” to the anthemic refrains of “More Than Meets the Eye,” it is clear that the band is intent on reclaiming their glory and proving their relevance. What truly made Testament a force to reckon was their seamless blend of grit and harmony and the band quickly plays on their strengths here. The thick power chords that frame “More Than Meets the Eye” give way to a hooky chorus and the kind of chant that was tailor-made for optimal crowd participation.

After a decade plus break from the band, lead guitarist Alex Skolnick returns to the fold and his presence is immediately felt. On paper, his jazz-leaning solos finding their way onto the band’s ferocious assault would seem like an “oil and water” kind of disaster. Funnily enough, it actually turns out to be the ingredient that was missing on the band’s last two albums. His fluidity and colorful playing tempers Peterson’s monolithic riffing lending the proceedings some interesting contrast. His sweeping solos on songs like “Henchmen Ride” and “Afterlife” are lessons in restraint, melodic interplay, and taste. His years away playing with his jazz trio seems to have actually invigorated the guitarist’s passion for rock guitar.

the easy thing to do is just not upload an insane number of albums for the sake of uploading music. if you have a lot of music to share, then great! I'm happy for you! but you don't need to upload it all at once. upload an album and wait a while. this thread gets over saturated sometimes, and sometimes I'll spend an entire day downloading things here and then delete all of it after it all turns out to be boring. I've kept maybe 5 albums I've downloaded from this thread, at a stretch. Given that we have maybe 10 albums a page and we've had over 100 pages, that's pretty amazing.

this thread isn't a replacement for your p2p client, that's one of the reasons request are frowned upon. it's easier to search soulseek or google than it is to come here and ask for somebody to upload something for you.

First, an apology: I know I'm getting the formatting wrong. But hey, I come bearing a leak!

This is the much-anticipated album of Tom Waits covers as performed by the notoriously top-heavy Ms. Johansson. From the official website:

Scarlett Johansson's inspired Atco Records debut album ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD features her distinctive interpretations of ten songs by Tom Waits plus one original selection, "Song For Jo." Johansson co-wrote the track with TV On The Radio's David Andrew Sitek, who produced the album and lends his multi-instrumental talents throughout as well. She is also joined by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, Sean Antanaitis from Celebration and others.

The album's title track comes from Waits' acclaimed 1985 album Rain Dogs. Johansson also selected cuts from Alice, Swordfishtrombones, Big Time, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, Real Gone, Small Change and Bone Machine. Johansson spent five weeks in spring 2007 recording ANYWHERE I LAY MY HEAD at Dockside Studios in Maurice, Lousiana, in the heart of Cajun country.

The general consensus in the blogosphere seems to be that Scarlett should just stick to pouting and giving Woody Allen blueballs, but I think this album is pretty awesome. I love that she's done something so utterly contrary to her public persona. The production on this album is unmistakably the work of Dave Sitek, and it certainly elevates the music above the ranks of any other starlet-turned-singer in recent memory. Not that Lindsay Lohan set the bar that high (although I have a soft spot for that "Father to Daughter" song).

With that said, I can still see how Ms. Johansson could be criticized for making this album. The word "indulgent" certainly applies to an actress with no prior recordings to her credit (not counting her rendition of "Summertime" or her onstage appearance with The Jesus and Mary Chain at Coachella last year) who decides to make a Tom Waits cover album and uses her fame to attract top-tier indie talent to accompany her (oh, and did I mention that David Bowie duets with her? You can hear his work on "Falling Down" and "Fannin' Street").

Anyway, enough from me. What do y'all think?

I would like to politely disagree with you on this point.  I think people should feel free to upload whatever they want, searching the topic and not re-upping things seems wise but besides that if you'd like to upload the entire New Found Glory discography, feel free!  You will likely be mocked by why should we encourage music discussion when many times people don't have access to the CD you'd like to talk about.  While your guidelines are great for, "Will my effort result in maximum happiness" I don't really think they should be what we go by.

All I know is that the most interesting and obscure album I uploaded has been downloaded hardly at all compared to other things I have uploaded.  So clearly most people do in fact use this thread to get leaks, things Pitchfork just reviewed, etc.

I personally use it to discover new bands since I usually go blog hunting for obscure albums (due to the no requests rule, which I think I try to enforce a bit too much.) However, I think this thread does need less clutter. I am totally cool with posting leaks/discographies though.

AMG Review

Somewhat bizarrely, Beat received a large amount of critical buzz over its supposedly groundbreaking fusion of hip-hop/techno rhythms and the band's older dream pop stylings. Anyone who had heard Loveless-era My Bloody Valentine or a fair amount of Chapterhouse's material probably had some things to say about that judgment, while in turn many dance mavens saw the band's efforts as already terribly outdated in terms of general sonic approach. Set all this aside and concentrate on enjoying Beat in and of itself, though, and the fine qualities of both group and album come through quite clearly. Bowery Electric may not be on the cutting edge, but Schwendener and Chandler aren't pretending to dwell there. The title track sets the album's tone from the start, an open-ended guitar drone from Chandler later accompanied by Schwendener's low-key bass and distanced singing matched with a crisp drum loop. Variations on this basic formula throughout Beat: slight rhythms are sometimes more prominent, sometimes buried, guitar lines are clearer here or more heavily produced there -- but taken as a whole the release is quietly intoxicating. Standouts include "Fear of Flying," with a strong guitar scream/wash from Chandler and a more upfront bass/drum combination, and the thoroughly but beautifully zoned out "Black Light," which features a rare Chandler vocal and an enveloping delay-pedal-produced atmosphere. Notably, the drumming on the latter track is more in line with, say, early Pink Floyd or Slowdive rather than the loops used elsewhere. Both performers are incredibly undemonstrative throughout the album -- Beat works best as something either totally concentrated on or left running as ambient music; a party record this isn't. At times Bowery Electric eschew percussion entirely, to lovely effect: "Under the Sun" is a brief but dark piece, a low bassline providing the only forward motion.

AMG Review

By now, you pretty much know what to expect from Bowery Electric -- great head music filled with dashes of Mo' Wax-informed beats, breathy vocals, and atmospheric flourishes. Those three characteristics are a dime a dozen by now, but somehow BE manages to pull it off without sounding like the umpteenth Portishead knock-off. The duo breathes life into the dead and bloated goat of trip-hop by shedding their own tendency to space out in favor of concentrating more on the pulsing low end. Lawrence Chandler's beats, though highly clichéd at points, land harder than before, and Martha Schwendener's vocals are more prominent. It's their most song-based outing to date, and as a result, it's also their most accessible. At times ("Freedom Fighter,") they even sound assaultive! Yet another Bowery release that feels as comfortable as fresh sheets on the bed, Lushlife lends itself more to head-nodding than nodding off. If it seems too much like a tired, well-trodden road, just pretend the record came out in '95.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this thread had been running for quite a while before you started posting on this forums, so I'd consider slightly presumptuous for you to be dictating what this thread is for and what it isn't for.

Personally I use this thread for pretty much all of my music downloading needs, especially since Oink closed down, and I'm sure there's a lot of people similar to me in that they use this thread as basically just a place to get music, not necessarily rare music, or new music, or old music. It's just a place where people upload things that they think other people would enjoy, and then people download those things and enjoy them. Why the hell do we need to complicate this wonderful process with a bunch of dumb constraints about what's kosher and what's not for this thread?

Personally I don't use music blogs, because there's no blog I've found that is quite as good as this thread in regards to putting up music that I like, and I really don't have the time to trawl through countless different blogs just for a few gems (or even marginally useful uploads) every now and then, when there's more good stuff than I can handle in here.

You may think it's pointless to post stuff that "everybody has heard" (which is a totally dumb thing to say anyway), but there's been plenty of stuff in here that's considered classic that I hadn't heard, and now have, thanks to this thread. "Desire" by Bob Dylan, "Zen Arcade" by Husker Du, the first three Stooges albums, "Whatever and Ever Amen" by Ben Folds Five, the first three Black Sabbath albums, almost every Boris album, and so on ad infinitum. Without the mediaf!re thread, my musical taste would almost certainly be quite different.

As to using P2P programs or torrents, I choose to use neither because I'm not on a private tracker and public torrents and P2Ps are shockingly insecure. This thread provides a secure alternative.

Just because this thread isn't useful to you doesn't mean it isn't useful to, well, nearly everyone else. You're suggesting that everyone else use alternate means to find their music instead of cluttering up this thread, well, how about you employ alternate means to find the music you want instead of cluttering up this thread with your bitching?

If you've only found 5 albums worth keeping from this thread, then that's because of your taste, it's not the fault of the incredibly generous people contributing to this thread.

At no point did I say "you should not upload something". I just said 'if you take more consideration into what you upload, then less of what is uploaded to the thread will be done so in poor taste'. Maybe not in so many words, but that's the point I was trying to get across. My other point is that this thread should not be a replacement for blog searches and p2p applications. Turning it into that is very distasteful. I don't think there's any excuse for request in this thread, or the uploading of leaked albums that are mentioned on every music website ever right now. Current case in point is the new Wolf Parade album. Within 30 seconds of hearing about it, I had found it through google. I have seen it uploaded at several locations without actually looking for it, and it is being mentioned all over the internet. I'll be surprised if Jeph Jacques hasn't mentioned it in his comic. Does it really need to be here too?

The bigger and more popular this thread becomes, the riskier it is to have it. The more Wolf Parade albums you upload, the more popular it will become. And that Wolf Parade album was boring to boot! Totally not worth an upload. Leaks are great, if they're worth it. But I can't think of a single reason to post an entire discography. If anybody here can give me a compelling reason to upload the entire Velvet Underground and Jesus and Mary Chain discography, then I will do that exact thing. No matter what side of the fence you sit on regarding arguments about file sharing, uploading an entire discography to a thread like this is extremely disrespectful. The only exception is if every album is long out of print.

Through a combination of torrent sites, soulseek, google and sordomusic.com, there is just about nothing that I can not find within a minute of deciding "I want this". The difference between me and other folks here is that they probably don't have to search for a release for weeks on end before they find it. I make this assumption based exclusively on the contents of this thread. If I can tolerate having to search for weeks to find an album, then the folks who use this thread for what I refer to as "albums being talked about by the every music blog" could do well to take 30 seconds to run a blog search.

I can't understand why anybody who would otherwise enjoy the song would find this lyric irritating. Do a lot of people have a problem with musicians using the phrase 'Jesus christ' in their songs?
It must be hard being Jeff Mangum. There's a lot of pressure on him to out perform this album if or when he decides to start writing and recording music again. No matter what he would do, people would say it wasn't as good as Aeroplane, even if it was better.

Bonus points to the man for not putting out the same schlock album over and over like most other 90s indie 'heroes' that kept on trucking.

Here's my contribution to the Patton Oswalt list. Patton's one of my favorite comedians and both his albums are great. 222 is an unedited, 2 hour recording that was later edited down for the single-disc Feeling Kinda Patton. While some of the editing was just removing nonsense comments and audience blathering, they actually cut some really funny bits, a few of which reappear on Werewolves and Lollipops. While the original was released as simply 2 hour long tracks, I've gone ahead and divided it up myself into separate tracks, most of which resemble equivalent tracks on Feeling Kinda Patton. Enjoy!

this is a repost and reedit of something I had pointed out a while back after one Sox's rants about a month ago (he seems to about every month, coincidence?)

I'm a douchebag? Sorry man. I didn't notice. I've made the effort to never insult anybody in any of my post, I've tried to treat everybody with a level of respect, even when the other regulars here say they don't deserve it. Maybe I have only been a douchebag since February, but I've been a regular poster here for a number of years and a large number of the people on the forum know me, some personally. Whenever I 'rant' I like to use an abundance of question marks and avoid insults at all cost, because that's how you provoke discussion. If I can help it, I also like to avoid unjust character assassination of people whose post I haven't read in any real detail, which seems to be the case here, as I have PMs in my inbox telling me how polite and well mannered I come across in my posts.
I'd much rather that you too didn't make such claims about my character, as not everybody here knows me well enough to know that it simply is not the case.

in the aeroplane over the sea has been posted a grand total of . . . drum roll . . . two times!  a far cry from "umpteen" as sox states here.

I enjoyed that Neutral Milk Hotel album, it is true. Couldn't repeat a lyric off of it for the life in me now, but I inititally took a little offense to the man's post because I hadn't read it properly. It seemed to me that he was shrugging off a great album because of a lyric that could be interpreted as being religious. Did I make another post in that thread at all to elaborate my opinion on the matter? I don't recall, but it certainly seems like the kind of thing I'd do. I certainly didn't feel like I was 'blowing my load' over anything, I just made an observation about a musician and his his fanbase. I chose that thread to make a forced post because I wanted to get the new account into the open as fast as I could, and that was the only thread at that particular time where I felt I could fit in a totally harmless and easily overlooked post. It didn't work, as I think I got involved in a gun control debate in my first week and attracted a lot of attention. I can't apologize enough for mentioning Neutral Milk Hotel and then not sending the album to people who already like Neutral Milk Hotel.

Perhaps we both need to work on our reading comprehension, I know I certainly do, I tend to skim over a lot of things. My manners are certainly something I need to work on, and unfortunately they're the only thing I have going for me, as all my opinions are completely and totally wrong and ill-informed. And despite my best intentions, I have now been a complete douchebag.

PTownBlazer. Can you find it in your heart to forgive me?

Before I post this, I want to make my opinions on public file sharing clear, so as to elaborate on my previous posts in here. I would like to make it clear that these are my own standards, set for myself and that I am by no means saying to any of you "Don't post anything".
I'll share anything privately. I send a lot of music to people through PMs and emails. Publicly, however, I impose a lot more rules on myself.
I don't feel good about sharing publicly the music of artist I enjoy if the music is still available for purchase. I make exceptions for artist so obscure they have to produce each copy of the said album by hand, as well as albums that are out of print. If, however, my friends want to hear it, that's fair. I know them.

BUY MORE MUSIC.  SUPPORT MUSICIANS AND INDEPENDANT RECORD LABELS.  DON'T JUST DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING.
