The Aggrolites are one of the world's hardest working bands and with serious talent to boot. While out on tour they knew when they arrived back in LA there was no time to relax, it would be straight into the studio for their second album with Hellcat Records. The title track from Reggae Hit L.A. says it all. It reflects two concepts the band formed while touring. One: The desire to represent who they are and where they come from. Los Angeles is in their blood--the culture, the weather, the complexities of the city of angels. Two: While touring the U.S., the Aggrolites were reminded that they love the fact that LA has a reggae scene: one they can dig every week of the year and that's worth talking about. It’s not something you can find in the heartland.

Okay guys after reading like, five days worth of posts on how one should behave in this thread, I feel like a total cunt about my past behavior in this thread, with being a dick about the requests rule and everything else, especially freaking out at that one kid who uploaded the same album I did.

So, sorry guys! I'll try to be better with this thread now!

Edit: Man, fight you page break. Fight you so hard.

Rules:

No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at http://www.photobucket.com or at http://imageshack.us

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to mediaf!re.com, in multiple parts if the album is over 100mbs. The reason for this is that we know mediaf!re is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the afro emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Do NOT request albums, it's annoying. Requests that have been disguised at not allowed either.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page.

DJ Frane - The Electronic Garden of Delights

I admit that there was exactly one thing that made this album for me at first and it was the absolutely fucking awesome sampling of Sabbath's "Planet Caravan" on the first track.  I was in love before I got more than 30 seconds into this disc.  It didn't end there ... it only got better.  This is some of the thickest turntable work I've ever heard in my life and I'm completely addicted to it.  So, so fucking good.

Also, the secondary tagline on this album is "Beats to Blaze to Vol. 2."  It's very accurate.  If you enjoy smoking weed you have found one of your new favorite albums.

Pixies - Trompe Le Monde

Quote from: AMG
The title might be French for "fool the world," but with Trompe le Monde, the Pixies weren't fooling anyone: this was essentially Black Francis' solo debut. It focuses on Francis' sci-fi fascination and lacks any Kim Deal songs; even her backing vocals are far and few between. Yet the band sounds revitalized on Trompe le Monde, as if it were planned as their last hurrah. The raucous "Distance Equals Rate Times Time" and the explosive cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" are fairly straightforward, but the lyrics remain quirky on "Planet of Sound," a song about a Martian who lands on Earth, and "Palace of the Brine," a tribute to sea monkeys and Utah's Salt Lake. He even disses hipsters and pretentious students -- basically, the Pixies' fan base -- with nasty little digs like "Subbacultcha"'s "I was wearing eyeliner/She was wearing eyeliner" and "U-Mass"' "It's eduuucaaationaal!" Musically, "Trompe le Monde"'s psychedelic sheen and "Alec Eiffel"'s atmospheric keyboards prove that the Pixies' sound wasn't defined by Steve Albini-style rawness. There's also more emotional depth: "The Sad Punk" features the strangely poignant bridge "And evolving from the sea/Would not be too much time for me/To walk beside you in the sun," and "Letter to Memphis" is a heartfelt, if cryptic, love song. Though Trompe le Monde doesn't sound quite like the Pixies' other work, Come on Pilgrim's spooky beginnings, Surfer Rosa's abrasive assault, Doolittle's deceptively accessible punk-pop, and Bossanova's spacy sonics helped make Trompe le Monde a rousing swan song and a precursor to alternative rock's imminent success. Whether that means their music remained pure or they missed their chance to cash in is debatable; either way, the Pixies are one of America's greatest, most influential bands.

All I know is that the most interesting and obscure album I uploaded has been downloaded hardly at all compared to other things I have uploaded.  So clearly most people do in fact use this thread to get leaks, things Pitchfork just reviewed, etc.

I don't care, but it does get tedious to skim through hundreds of posts just to get one gem.

That's half the fun, makes the gem you found sparkle that much brighter!

I'm actually shaving soon.  I guess I'll have to make up for it with more uploads.

Indian - The Unquiet Sky

Quote
First things first: The Unquiet Sky is everything a doom record should be. The bass tone is so perfect and intense that it could shake your body through a pair of headphones. The guitars bring Black Sabbath-esque fuzz down enough notches to kill a horse. The percussion is sparse when it needs to be ("Ration") and energetic when it's allowed ("Tied and Gagged"). Dylan O'Toole's vocals give Indian the extra edge over many of the other bands who have perfected this formula by complementing the melancholy created by the music with a demonic voice of evil. There is even an extended track of terrifyingly psychedelic feedback, perfectly placed to scare the crap out of you when you're high. In fact, the only thing that fails to be suitably doom-y and evil about this record is the cover illustration of a Christ-like baboon which, despite being evil enough in spirit, looks a bit too much like it was drawn in a junior high art class.

This record is an easy recommend for fans of the "doom" genre, but what about anyone unacquainted with the genre? I personally don't consider myself a huge aficionado of the style, but loved this record. The only things required to enjoy The Unquiet Sky are an attention span and a love of all things metal. This record generally moves slowly, as does most doom, but it is far less droning and repetitive than many recent examples of the genre. As the name of the style suggests, doom is, by its very nature, dark, oppressive music. As such, Indian is definitely better suited to being digested over an extended period of time at high volumes, rather than short bursts in your car or through headphones.

Bottom Line: If you're searching for the latest, greatest doom record to add to your collection, look no further than Indian's The Unquiet Sky. Fans of Neurosis, Eyehategod and Godflesh should also definitely pick this up. It's a solid record from beginning to end from an up-and-coming trio of doom virtuosos.

Fucking awesome heavy doom.  This record is a lot like Zoroaster's "Dog Magic," in that I listened to it once and it instantly became one of my favorite examples of the genre (another parallel to that album is that the harsh blackened vocals are a turn-on for me instead of the turn-off they usually are.  I don't usually like that vocal style but in this album it fits perfectly).  These guys are brutal and this album is magnificent.

Andy McKee - The Gates of Gnomeria

Quote
Gates of Gnomeria is a collection of Andy McKee original songs and two covers. His cover of Bjorks, Venus as a Boy is a stunning multi-track arrangement of one of her best known songs from her debut. Join by Bassist Jeff Schmidt on two songs, A Sphere and Dependant Arising, the songs on Gates of Gnomeria as a collection are more laid-back than on Art of Motion and larger musical ideas at the same time. Andy is the most innovative and exciting fingerstyle guitarist to emerge in years. Still in his 20's, Andy has developed a mastery of the 6-string guitar and the harp guitar that leaves me speechless. I find myself listening to his tunes over and over again, discovering new nuances every time. He is the most textural player of the instrument since Michael Hedges, and he creates sonic architecture worthy of the great modern composers for any instrument. - Don Ross

Andy McKee might be the best acoustic guitarist I've ever heard.  He holds absolute and complete mastery over his instrument.    This shit is completely jaw-dropping.  Stunningly beautiful music.

ルルル - ルルル

Quote
It's easy to think, upon hearing descriptions like "spaced-out" or "instrumental" or "shoegaze," of a bunch of sullen dudes playing soft, twinkery tunes in a dark room. While that is certainly the case for Toyko's rururu, it's also far from the mark. rururu might play spacey songs, but they are loud spacey songs. Loud and huge. Full of swirling guitar noise and Dina's occasional high pitched vocals. Much like Downy, rururu builds their songs up over time through both repetition and sheer volume. Dina's vocals are treated just like the other instruments, acting more as raw tones instead of words, his words stretched and awash in delay and reverb.

Their songs have that dark and dangerous feel so common among the shoegaze set, but songs like "Mugen" and the amazing "&" also offer up trance-like tribal rhythms between the drums and bass, allowing the guitars to spin and scream over the top. This adds a welcome feel of triumph and celebration in an otherwise dismal and despairing genre. Truly awesome, awesome stuff.

Japanese post-rock.  For my money, at least as good as Mono, possibly better (yes, really).  This forum's savvy enough to know that that would be a big deal.  Guess what, this album's a big deal.

Twi The Humble Feather - Music For Spaceships and Forests

I couldn't find a picture or a review for this one.  I don't know if people still listen to Animal Collective but this is basically the best album they never made.  These guys are a little too good to pigeonhole that way, but the similarities between the two are pretty marked (particularly the vocal style), and anyone who enjoys Animal Collective can be basically guaranteed to love the hell out of this.  Spacey acoustic psych-folk with weird chanted harmonies and lots of trippy transitions.

Brightblack Morning Light - Brightblack Morning Light

Quote
Closer to a band of gypsies than any group Hendrix ever conjured, Brightblack Morning Light understand the responsibility that comes with playing off-the-red folk-blues that pitter-patters down the sidewalk like a paranoid goose-stepper. The Southerners-turned-Sanfranciscans whisper more than shout, but they know how to demand attention. Let this self-titled debut steep in its own warm juices for a spell; you'll see. The porno horns bleating through the misty ten-minutes-plus maze of "Star Blanket River Child" are the first sign of expansion. From there, an ever-widening chasm of ghostly chants, swamp-water rhythms, rusty trombones, hand-drum swats, and low-in-the-mix guitar swipes will swallow you whole.

Oozy, atmospheric and so relaxed and groovy that it makes you wish you hadn't gone to work today.  Thrumming bass, nodding percussion, and ethereal vocals are at the core, but horns, flute, and a bunch of other instruments wind their lazy way around the mix as if nobody has anywhere to be anytime soon ... and once you put the album on, you won't want to either.  This is some supreme chill-out music, and it's got enough personality to set itself way apart.  Highly recommended.

You can download it for free through http://nin.com but here it is in case anyone hasn't heard of it or their activation emails haven't been sent.

If you like Electronic/ Punky/ Dance-y/ Industrial-esque Rock then I strongly recommend this, it may take a few listens for you to come around to it but it's a solid release from El Rezzo.

It might not be the file but the fact that winzip can't unzip. It Doesn't know how to create a folder with strange symbols. Try renaming the file and then unzipping. it worked for me.

Yeah, some computers will probably not know how to read that archive because of the Japanese characters in the name.  Let me rename everything and try again (I hope it still doesn't give any trouble due to tags ... I don't want to have to retag the files as well).

More incredibly thick, funky beats, complete with, of all things, a track called "Ode to Old Toby" which is a sample of a quote from Lord of the Rings about hobbit pipe-weed (followed of course by a sample of a bong bubbling ... this guy's shameless about appealing to his core demographic).  Fucking great stuff.  Technically I think Frane's stuff falls under the "downtempo" genre or something ... it's just really awesome turntablism.  I can't say enough good things about it.  Unfortunately I think I'm missing the last track, but it's still 12 cuts of some of the best mixing work I've ever heard.  It's been a long time since I could recommend an artist as unconditionally as I recommend DJ Frane.

Be on the lookout for "Journey to the Planet of Birds," his third and latest.  I haven't come up with it yet but I'm looking.

Xinlisupreme - Tomorrow Never Comes

Quote
Neither overtly psychedelic like Ghost or Acid Mothers Temple nor as abrasive as the Boredoms, Xinlisupreme occupy a unique territory within experimental Japanese rock. On their singles and full-length debut, Tomorrow Never Comes, they mix noise, melody, and electronic and organic textures in a way that recalls not just the Boredoms but Sonic Youth, Suicide, My Bloody Valentine, and a host of other innovators, but remains distinctive. Tomorrow Never Comes showcases all the different facets of Xinlisupreme's style, spanning the techno-dread of "Goodbye for All"'s stiff, mechanical drums and ominous synths and the strangely cheerful "Kyoro," a brisk instrumental wrapped in sandpapery layers of distorted drums and guitars, within its first two tracks. Despite the album's noisy peaks and valleys, thanks to clever mixing, the warm production and judicious use of musical textures, the overall effect of Tomorrow Never Comes is hypnotic instead of irritating. It's also a remarkably well-balanced album, with outbursts such as "Suzu" and "Untitled" balanced by eerie, implosive tracks like "Symmetry," which, with its spooky phased guitars and rattling percussion, could be the soundtrack to a very stylish, avant-garde horror film. "Fatal Sisters Opened Umbrella" has it both ways, opening with waves of brooding guitars and a hypnotic drumbeat before reaching its crashing climax. Whether loud or soft, however, each of Tomorrow Never Comes' songs feature a special attention to sonic detail: amid the thrashy guitars and crazed piano lines on "Under a Clown" a sound that resembles a knife being sharpened stands out in the mix, and on "Nameless Song" the group sounds more exotic than most world music by mixing koto, shakuhachi, and galloping percussion with a blistering guitar melody. But it may be the mysterious, but undeniable, emotional undercurrent of much of Xinlisupreme's work that makes them, and Tomorrow Never Comes, especially unique among experimental rock. The bittersweet vibe that envelops "All You Need Is Love Was Not True" makes its approachable, offbeat beauty even lovelier; the filmic "Amaryllis"' subtle keyboards, galloping drums, and chanted vocals give it a sense of loss that's more powerful because it's merely suggested. A fascinating interplay of textures, dynamics, and moods, Tomorrow Never Comes refuses to draw boundaries between rock, electronic, noise, or world music, which makes it that much more compelling.

Xinlisupreme - Murder License

AMG Review
Quote
Japan's Xinlisupreme took Fat-Cat and the world by jarring, electrical storm with their initial singles and the Tomorrow Never Comes full-length. But the noise experimentalists return before anyone could run for cover, dropping the mini-album Murder License through Fat-Cat's "Splinter Series" CD arm. Tomorrow was defined by juxtaposition, flawlessly playing delicate relent off strobe-lit explosions hardwired to the eyelids. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Murder makes mincemeat of such subtleties. While there are fleeting moments of respite, it is an album preoccupied with frightening, crashing, unending noise -- the sound of industrial culture cannibalizing itself. "I Drew a Picture of My Eyes," "Sakae," "Front of You" -- these pieces build from thrumming basslines to staccato .50-caliber percussion drops, and the forlorn, fatalistic mutterings of humans being eaten by iron smelters. The opening title track is similarly distorted; however, it layers a wayward, keening synth over the chaos, suggesting the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" played backward by berserkers. Later, "I.T.D.O.O.M." discovers a lonely, flute-like instrument wallowing in a world of breezy, grimy manhole covers. The instrument repeats its simple scale as sickly sweet air swirls through sluiceways, and it's calming, to a degree. Still, it's clear the bone-shattering aural grime of Murder's more crippling material is never far away. The album closes with "Count Down," a flawless blend of its two extremes. Fractured beats scatter like cicadas unleashed over a pounding industrial rhythm. Somewhere a melody develops, down beneath the blast doors and corrugated grating. But the machines eventually, finally burn through, silencing Murder License in peels and tears of charred shrapnel.

Yeah, some computers will probably not know how to read that archive because of the Japanese characters in the name.  Let me rename everything and try again (I hope it still doesn't give any trouble due to tags ... I don't want to have to retag the files as well).

Yeah, re-naming fixes it. The tags work fine, although winamp reads them as 4 square boxes.

This music is awesome by the way.

Some more doom metal

Rwake - Voices of Omens

Quote
Review   by Eduardo Rivadavia

With their sophomore release, If You Walk Before You Crawl, You Crawl Before You Die, Little Rock, AR's unpronounceable Rwake unexpectedly delivered one of 2004's best and most intriguing heavy metal records; taking the complexities inherent to contemporary prog-heads like Mastodon or Isis, plus Neurosis' affinity for disturbing spoken and musical samples, and contrasting them against doomy Southern sludge's gut-bucket brutality and primal instincts with improbable success. So much so that not even meager independent distribution and sporadic touring could prevent Rwake from graduating to a new label in metal powerhouse Relapse Records, for whom they recorded album number three, 2007's much anticipated Voices of Omens. Here, following an unexpectedly sweet and clean mandolin intro, the group wisely resumes all of their unique sonic contradictions, simultaneously fine-tuning their songwriting skills and ditching some of their more obvious Neurosis dependencies of yore while embarking upon ever longer compositions, like nine-minute epics "Finality," "The Grievous Abomination," and "The Lure of Light." Naysayers may correctly point out that these, along with additional, largely faultless creations such as the initially acoustic "Fire and Flight" and the spectacularly riffed "Inverted Overtures" offer pretty much the same sort of harsh dynamic shifts from light to dark as the bands cited above (plus other rising stars like Mouth of the Architect or Rosetta). But what truly separates Rwake from most all of their like-minded contemporaries, is their self-effacing obsession with trailer-trash culture (generally realized via amusing snatches of TV and movie dialog), and a unique talent for weaving positively sublime melodies into their otherwise punishing musical bulk -- like gold stitching onto a two-ton rhino's pelt! That and the downright flashiest, shred-guitar solos to be found anywhere within their aesthetic milieu, which are delivered with unashamed heroics by the cryptically named Gravy (that's right, his handle is Gravy). In sum, Voices of Omens not only proves that Rwake's early promise was no flash-in-the-pan, but will hopefully also guarantee some measure of respect alongside their more notorious but hardly more talented peers -- better album sales certainly wouldn't hurt, either.

Yes, Reign In Blood would be classified as an album by the UK Charts Company. However, Caspian's still right in saying they don't know shit. According to their rules Smackdown's self-titled EP is an album because it has eight tracks. It's not an album, it's an EP. They're wrong. Also, they have no category for mini-album so Woman King would be classified as an album by them as well. The time-based categories you posted are flawed as well, since I can think of tons of albums that don't reach 30 minutes in length. Humanfly's A God Among Insects is about 17 minutes in length I think, but it's definitely an album and not an EP or mini-album. The band were very clear on that.

Why bother at all!? Its a disc. Made of vinyl, or layers of plastic and foil, and filled with some amount of sound, preferably in the form of really cool music. What that certain amount is called? Who gives a fuck!?

Hella began as a two member band writing technically intricate music of a highly spastic nature. They play a blend of math rock, noise rock and avant-garde. On early albums, the band forged their classic sound, playing minimally arranged, abrasive instrumentals that still retain an idiosyncratic sense of melody.

ANYWHO, I'm pretty sure I uploaded this ages and ages back, but I just got into the album again and I'm sure the original is gone with the reboot anyhow.

I uploaded both of their albums a few pages back, and both are still up. Pick up the the second album, it's almost as good as the first. So you don't have to search for it, I'll even quote it for ya. That Cut Copy is cool too if anyone hasn't picked it up yet.

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

From allmusic:
Quote
Australian indie electronic trio Cut Copy take many of their cues from contemporaries like Air, Daft Punk, and LCD Soundsystem, but with a distinctly pop sensibility that draws on classic AM radio pop singles from the 1970s and '80s, with elements of vintage disco and synth pop that appeal to song-based listeners as well as the club kidz. Cut Copy started in 2001 as a solo project by songwriter, producer, and DJ Dan Whitford, who released the single 1981 and the EP I Thought of Numbers before drafting in other members to fill out his synth and sample-based sound. Bassist and guitarist Tim Hoey and drummer Mitchell Scott debuted on Cut Copy's first full-length album, Bright Like Neon Love, released in the summer of 2004. After several successful singles were spun off the album (including Saturdays, Future, and Going Nowhere), Universal's Island Records imprint picked up the trio's international distribution in 2006. Following an inventive Whitford live DJ mix that was released in 2006 as Fabriclive.29 (including such unexpected delights as Ciccone Youth's noisy deconstruction "Into the Groovey" and Roxy Music's suave "Angel Eyes" alongside the usual Goldfrapp and Soulwax), the band proper returned in early 2007 with the new single Hearts on Fire.

Quote
Reversing the usual process by which groups break up and give way to solo careers, the Traveling Wilburys are a group made up of solo stars. The group was organized by former Beatle George Harrison, former Electric Light Orchestra leader Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison, thus representing three generations of rock stars. In 1988, the five (who had known each other for years) came together to record a Harrison B-side single and ended up writing and recording an album on which they shared lead vocals. It turned out to be a way to transcend the high expectations made of any of them as individuals, and a delighted public sent the album to number three, with two singles, "Handle With Care" and "End of the Line" hitting the charts. Unfortunately, Orbison died of a heart attack only a few weeks after the album's release.

Two years later, the remaining quartet released a second album, inexplicably titled Vol. 3. Although it didn't match the success of the first Wilburys album, it was another million-selling hit. Throughout the '90s, there were rumors of another Traveling Wilburys record in the works, but no new albums from the group surfaced. Harrison and Lynne did re-team in 1995, when Lynne produced and reworked two John Lennon demos with the Beatles for their Anthology rarities collection.

In 1987 I was working for a Norwegian company, and in December I was in Oslo for a couple of weeks training.  I had my new portable recording equipment with me (Sony WM-D6C Pro Walkman and ECM-929LT mic), and went to hear Oscar Peterson who was in town one evening:

So wait, the Japanese word for "Sex" is a Japan-ised version of the English word? What did they call it before contact with Westerners?

My knowledge of Japanese is extremely limited (read: I don't know shit) but doesn't it work completely differently from any western language? To a point where one syllable can mean one thing combined with a second and a completely different thing combined with another?

So it's not really a word-based system.
