Also what's the deal with Cult of Luna, are they that good?

I think they're third to neurosis and Isis in the post/sludge/atmospheric/pretentious/doom/avant/etc metal stakes. They aren't perfect, they only really have one sound and their drumming isn't what you'd call 'varied' but it's made up for with some excellent guitar action, layering and general songwriting, and they're getting better and better as they go along.

Brainiac - Bonsai Superstar

AMG Review
Quote
Whereas Smack Bunny Baby had shown Brainiac to be a band that was still developing, Bonsai Superstar is an astounding blast of cohesive madness. The band finds its voice and vision and moves light years ahead of their peers (as well as where they had been musically only a year earlier). From the opening moments of "Hot Metal Dobermans," it is apparent that listeners are in the hands of an assured, ambitious group of musicians -- including the newly arrived John Schmersal on guitar. The music is far more adventurous than on the previous album, incorporating more raw noise and sound effects, and even constructing "Fucking with the Altimeter" around a series of spoken samples. But lead singer Tim Taylor is the star of this show -- his combination of a Betty Boop falsetto and an Elvis-style croon on "Flypaper" is mesmerizing, and his explosive strut through "Sexual Frustration" exudes pure star power. Bonsai Superstar captures a band that was ahead of their time and still moving forward.

...I'm getting away on a technicality here because the album's actually already in the thread: if anyone who downloaded that M83 already would be so kind as to re-host it ... damn download keeps hanging...

There's something about this specific link... others seem fine, but this one is like molasses. Of course, the alt has expired. *shrug*

Here's some danish stuff for you:

Veto - There Is A Beat In All Machines

Quote
Danish band Veto have been praised by critics for their fearless sound and selected as the opening act for portions of the Killers' European tour. The band is definitely hard to classify, as their full-length debut There's A Beat In All Machines confirms. Most tracks are synth driven, but not in the same way as many of their peers. This isn't simple eighties revivalist music, but instead an icier, brooding mixture of electronica and rock.
The rest of the review. I also found this review from purevolume useful...

Loving this thread. I'll be contributing two or three albums when my bandwidth ticks over in a week or so. In the meantime, is it possible that someone re-upload Tweez by Slint? Both uploads have been deleted ):

Ehh, let's have an EitS post. I'm sure there's a few of you out there who haven't heard them yet.

Explosions in the Sky - Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever

Quote
The members of Explosions in the Sky may just be four soft-spoken guys from Texas, but on Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever they simply tear everything apart. Combining influences from classic rock to metal to goth, the band creates instrumental soundscapes that can turn from all-out destruction to heartfelt, dreamy melodies in the blink of an eye. The result is similar to Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor! -- a musical journey that leads listeners through the entire range of emotion without even needing words. "Greet Death" matches a crunchy Dinosaur Jr. hook with warm Cure-esque bass grooves. "Moon Down" chimes and twists through ten minutes of calm night, leaving the listener with the feeling that something awesome is sure to happen. On "Have You Passed Through This Night?" a film-dialogue sample ponders in a near-whispering Texas drawl the meaning of the world. What follows is like the climax of a tense, mind-blowing movie, driven by relentless guitars and a thundering Master of Puppets-era Metallica drum march. "Poor Man's Memory" follows, offering some consolation in a sentimental melody. The album ends with the grand, 12-minute-long "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept," a song that moves from Sonic Youth to Joy Division to Explosions in the Sky. Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever is nothing short of awe-inspiring and one of the best records of 2001.

Here's both the album and the ep...

Apparently Mediafire hates any Twilight Sad uploaded by people on here, because when I tried to get the album last night, it was the only Mediafire download I've ever gotten horribly slow speed on (10k/s ffs) and then after a few minutes it was removed from the site.  I used google to find a blog that had a Mediafire link to from last year that still worked and downloaded at normal speed for me (300k/s or so).

Now I'm having the same problem with that EP link - I'm getting 10k/s if it even starts at all.

Very strange.  Is it just me?

It's just a rarely-used form of zip.  I think WinRar will open it.

It just seems weird that I've never once had a problem with Mediafire, and that last night I had problems with that one album but when I used a different link for it it downloaded just fine.  Weird.

I have had a few error 24s while uploading recently. I figure its not a good thing when you check on the status and the upload bar is at 116%. But I mean you get what you pay for... and we aren't really paying at all, so we can't complain too much.

Jason Anderson seems to have left his sad bastard ways behind. Both of his last two records, the excellent New England and the solid The Wreath, were exercises in artful brooding, full of Anderson’s creaking, tearjerker of a voice. But now, with Tonight, Anderson has done a complete 180. These nine songs find him most often doing his best E Street Band impression, and pulling it off nicely. These songs are simple and anthemic—on opener “Tonight”, Anderson employs a crowd of friends to be the answer to his call as they shout endlessly in the chorus “Tonight! Tonight!”. The album is full of raucous crowd-pleasers, and apparently Anderson had a slew of people at his disposal, as gangs shout and hands clap over the bulk of the album. Jason and his crew celebrate the simple pleasures here—Saturday night, the moment they’re in, moving out of the ‘burbs, the first snow—and the celebration sounds big, with the songs full of loud drums and horn sections and Anderson’s most spirited vocals in years (the casual passerby might mistake this for Buffalo Tom). Even on the slower, more wistful numbers, such as “So Long”, Anderson sounds more reverent than forlorn. And while that particular number might be the weakest track, it is a nice break from an album full of encore fodder. These songs may be simple and run on too long, but they’re too fun to dismiss. If the Hold Steady’s party is all about the clever kids, Tonight is a shindig for the guileless, as Anderson leads us all away from our troubles and into a place where music can cure what ails you, if only temporarily.

Sorry about the EitS files if they're fucked up. The 7zip thing is what was on my computer when I got it and, knowing almost nothing about computers, I stuck with it. The bitrates should be OK. "All of a Sudden..." is 128 (sorry), "How Strange..." is 192 and "Friday Night..." is a bit assorted but no lower than 160. Mediafire has been acting very oddly of late so maybe that's the issue with your downloads.

Yup, that TO.  Not sure what clubs he does.  I will ask him next time I see him.  The fellow I was referring to was Dave, the guitarist from Junior Achiever

Here's a different brand of post-rock for you post-rock suckers. Very orchestral-like, all instrumental.

Rachel's - Music for Egon Schiele

AMG Review
Quote
Composed for a live theater/dance production about the tragic life of Austrian artist Egon Schiele, the gentle majesty of Music for Egon Schiele is a welcome change of pace for anyone bored with popular music forms, transporting the listener's mood entirely. Rachel's weaves a delicate but highly moving musical fabric that wraps itself around you tightly and pulls you in, simultaneously cradling you lovingly while haunting you with its melancholy ambiance. At times, the emotionally rich compositions work as effectively as any ballet score to tell the artist's tragic story (related in the liner notes, which also include copies of some of her most famous pieces). It is to pianist Rachel Grimes' credit that her pieces convey a stirring sense of drama and vivid imagery that perfectly match her subject. Highly recommended.

Rachel's - The Sea and the Bells

AMG Review
Quote
Formed out of the ashes of Rodan, this loose collective thrives on the neo-classical compositional skills of pianist Rachel Grimes, bassist/organist Jason Noble, and violinist Christian Frederickson. Augmented by a rotating cast of cellists, trumpeters, and drummers, the trio concocts an emotive symphony that, though thoroughly modern, seems timeless. The songs on The Sea and the Bells flow together so seamlessly, it almost seems like one brilliant hour-long epic composition. "Rhine & Courtesan" opens the album with a dynamic, wistful melody that evokes the feeling of riding on ocean waves, then crashes to a startling halt, only to re-emerge with a claustrophobic eeriness that foretells impending doom. Other songs continue the nautical theme, from the haunting "Night at Sea" to the hallucinatory "Letters Home." In an alternative scene where instrumental rockers are a dime a dozen, Rachel's stands out like diamonds on the ocean floor.

Rachel's - Selenography

AMG Review
Quote
Rachel's' 1999 album, Selenography, presents more of their thoughtful, expressive, nearly unclassifiable compositions. Many of the 12 pieces here grew from live performances and were nurtured in the group's home studio, blossoming into works with a cosmic and rustic theme. The harpsichords on "Honeysuckle Suite," the gentle interplay of violas and piano on "Kentucky Nocturne," and the subtly dissonant guitars and vibes of "An Evening of Long Goodbyes" prove that Rachel's' already complex and beautiful sound continues to mature.

A little hip-hop. AMG gave this 5 stars.

Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst

AMG Review
Quote
It's hard to exaggerate the role that Kool Keith's debut solo album as Dr. Octagon played in revitalizing underground hip-hop. It certainly didn't bring the scene back to life single-handedly, but it attracted more attention than any non-mainstream rap album in quite a while, thanks to its inventive production and Keith's bizarre, free-associative rhymes. Dr. Octagonecologyst represented the first truly new, genuine alternative to commercial hip-hop since the Native Tongues' heyday. It appealed strongly to alternative audiences who'd grown up with rap music, but simply hadn't related to it since the rise of gangsta. Moreover, it predated seminal releases by Company Flow, Black Star, and the Jurassic 5, helping those groups get the attention they deserved, and reinvented Keith as a leader of the new subterranean movement. As if that weren't enough, the album launched the career of Dan the Automator, one of the new underground's brightest producers, and shed some light on the burgeoning turntablist revival via the scratching fireworks of DJ Q-Bert. The Automator's futuristic, horror-soundtrack production seemed to bridge the gap between hip-hop and the more electronic-oriented trip-hop (which has since narrowed even more), and it's creepily effective support for Keith's crazed alter ego. Dr. Octagon is an incompetent, time-traveling, possibly extraterrestrial surgeon who pretends to be a female gynecologist and molests his patients and nurses. The concept makes for some undeniably juvenile (and, arguably, hilarious) moments, but the real focus is Keith's astounding wordplay; it often seems based on sound alone, not literal meaning, and even his skit dialogue is full of non sequiturs. Keith has since lost his taste for the album, tiring of hearing it compared favorably to his subsequent work, and complaining that the only new audience he gained was white. However, it's the best musical backing he's ever had (especially the brilliant singles "Earth People" and "Blue Flowers"), and even if he's since explored some of these themes ad nauseum, Dr. Octagonecologyst remains as startling and original as the day it was released.

I really dig this stuff, you're lucky you have good local bands -_-.

That's one of very few. And the other 'few' only count if you're into brutal death or power metal.

Rules:

No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at http://www.photobucket.com or at http://imageshack.us

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to mediaf!re.com, in multiple parts if the album is over 100mbs. The reason for this is that we know mediaf!re is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the afro emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Do NOT request albums, it's annoying. Requests that have been disguised are not allowed either.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page..

The Kodan Armada - Collections Vol 1

Screamo from Louisville. Released posthumously this picks songs from all the band's releases, all of which are now out of print, and intersperses them with short, poorly-recorded live excerpts of them talking about the band and the songs. Creates a nice effect. They were really hyped at one time and maybe didn't quite deserve the massive amount of praise heaped upon them, but there was a reason for it. They had a distinct, busy, quite full sound, and this is worth downloading for the truly superb song Cops alone. Will probably appeal if you like Circle Takes The Square and Saetia. Oh, and check out the hilarious bit in Butterfly Effect, I nearly fell off my chair the first time I heard that.

Torches To Rome - s/t 12"

Classic Ebullition emo hardcore, influential stuff. They come across a bit like a really beefed-up DC band. I can't think of how to describe this band very well so I'll let someone more skilled than I explain why this is a really important record:

Quote from: collective-zine.co.uk
Ok, Torches to Rome. 8 songs, plays at 45 speed. And plants dynamite in my head, lights the fuse, then retires to a not particularly safe distance and proceeds to violently punch me in the stomach till detonation. As soon as the first crunch of "Mass For The Dead" breaks out of it's wavery intro and into the pounding, blasting hardcore powered by the delivery of dual vocaled snarls and desperate screams I'm floored. And once it winds down and then kicks off again into "Young Arsenal" and they introduce the kinda slightly more melodic elements I'm having fits. I'm sure Hot Water Music have ripped off bits of "This Is Not A Life", particularly the intro and the part where it all slows down for some dual vocals. Actually, that's the only comparison I am capable of making. A more political, more frantic, more intense, more heavy Hot Water Music. Argh! Tracks like "The Guards Are Itchy", how the fuck do they pound so hard yet have the vaguest traces of melody in there to keep everything together?

Chuck in some inspiring writing and lyrics on the blood spattered insert and you have the full package. Full on, "fuck you" intelligent, emotional, political hardcore. I just wish it had more than 8 songs, it's not enough! I guess I now need that ultra elusive Fuel compilation CD. *sigh*

I will never be able to listen to emo hardcore comfortably again, as in my mind I will just keep comparing it to this, the record which has redefined that style for me. I heard Boy Sets Fire for the first time the other day, I was expecting it to be awesome. It sounded ok, but kind of limp after having heard this. Oops.

Which about wraps my essay up. I might be a bit late for the train, but at least I caught it eventually, eh? You have no business listening to emo hardcore bands unless you have heard this first. Let me add the same thoughts as however many have had the priviledge of hearing this before me - an absolute classic punk record.

I posted From Our Living Room To Yours the other day, and here's some more early AmAnSet. I'll get Set Free, Know By Heart, and Promise of Love up on Thursday.

The American Analog Set - The Fun of Watching Fireworks

Quote
The American Analog Set's debut album is a hushed, evocative soundscape, an entrancing excursion into the realm of lo-fi dream pop. Frontman Andrew Kenny's songs -- typified by the aptly titled opening cut, "Diana Slowburner II" -- are hypnotic and deceptively simple, constructed of little more than ringing guitars and gently insistent rhythms, with the steady warm hum of a Farfisa coloring the music with a cosmic serenity; vocals creep in and out of the mix, rarely rising above a whisper. The cumulative effect is stunning: while the American Analog Set owe a clear debt to artists like Galaxie 500 and Stereolab, theirs is nevertheless an original and unique voice -- The Fun of Watching Fireworks is an experience in complete sonic immersion.

The American Analog Set - The Golden Band

Quote
The Golden Band reduces the American Analog Set's approach to its barest essentials -- favoring shorter, more economical songs over the epics of past outings, the group's third album also strips away much of their cosmic veneer to reveal the human pulse which tethers Andrew Kenny's songs and keeps them from floating away. The effect is hardly less hypnotic than earlier AmAnSet efforts, but is simply more direct -- while Kenny's hushed vocals and oblique lyrics still evoke first and foremost an eyes-wide-shut otherness, the record insinuates itself on the strength of a subtly expanded emotional palette which lends a haunting new dimension to the group's fragile beauty. And while songs like "Weather Report" and "A Schoolboy's Charm" still don't build toward any kind of conventional climax, they nevertheless boast a drama and tension all their own. Ultimately, The Golden Band's quiet power speaks volumes.
