Abe Vigoda is the name of a band from California. They are friends with neat bands like No Age and Mika Miko (I uploaded some of their stuff to this thread awhile ago -- they are pretty much the best band). Here are a couple EPs that they have recorded. Unfortunately, I don't have any of their full-lengths but if I can find the scratch I will be ordering them. I really dig what they have going on at the Smell. For anyone who hasn't read about it, it's an all-ages venue in Los Angeles that has cultivated a pretty awesome music scene in the past couple years. They run a label and distro out of it too, I think. It feels good to be excited about punk rock again.

Black Moth Super Rainbow come from the woods of western Pennsylvania. An actual, five-member band without the expected laptops and sequencers, BMSR is a psych-pop group in early-’70s electronic clothing. Sometimes the songs feel like pagan rituals in a sugarcoated fairyland, while at other times they’re like sad thoughts on the happiest days. All are lovingly played by real people with real hands.

Members prefer to go by aliases and stay away from normal press photos, in an attempt to keep the focus on their music. Led by Tobacco (Vox), who does most of the writing and production, the band also consists of Power Pill Fist (bass and atari), Father Hummingbird (rhodes and monosynth), The Seven Fields Of Aphelion (monosynth) and Iffernaut (drums). By developing their ideas in near-seclusion and without any local influence in Pittsburgh, they come across as feral and unique. Imagine being able to wipe the slate clean and hearing a pop song without ever hearing a pop song before and replacing the types of melodies you’re accustomed to hearing with something different. It’s kind of like that.

Most people associate sounds like a vocoded vocal with techno and novelty and analog synths with electro, but BMSR is coming from a different place and are trying to recontextualize these sounds. They’re categorized in the electronic genre, but their heads are somewhere else.

Fuck it's been SO long since I last heard this band.. One of my all time favourites

I hadn't listened to them in ages either. I went looking for an old mixtape (unsuccessfully) that had Cops on it, and it gave me the impetus to finally get hold of more.

Audrey - Debut EP

Code: [Select]
http://www.med!afire.com/?mjyezk9118b
Band Bio

Quote from: Last.fm
Swedish four-piece Audrey formed in 2002 and started performing gigs in April of the same year. Having recorded a demo in the studio of an artist’s collective in Gothenburg in the summer of 2003, the positive responses were immediate. During the summer and autumn they played more shows, selling over 500 demos in the process.

Moving forward a year or so, Audrey began to develop their sound. The embryo of their dark, suggestive pop took its first form in a run-down music house in the archipelago of Gothenburg. “It was really the worst place, the building was about to be demolished as we rehearsed there. The toilet was broken, the pipes had frozen and there were mice running around on the floor”, says guitarist Victoria Skoglund.

Describing Audrey’s music is no easy task. If the group has succeeded in finding a central theme, it’s a balance in the melodies - shimmering, beautiful moments of pop meet dark sadness.

The harmonies (everyone in the group shares vocal efforts) shift quickly between keys and moods. Straightforward, conventional narrative is replaced by abstract meanings which strengthen the melodies. “I like it when the lyrics can mean different things, that we give clues to our audience. Sometimes we can write quite incoherent things, but we are looking for a feeling in the music”, says Victoria.

Martina Topley-Bird - The Blue God

Quote
'The Blue God' is the second album from British vocalist Martina Topley-Bird who first gained exposure through her workwith Bristolian trip hop pioneer Tricky. Coming five years after her 2003 debut 'Quixotic' the album, produced by American hip hop legend Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz), sees Topley-Bird take her unique vocal style in a new direction, opting this time for a more pop orientated sound.

Daniel Ledwell - Two Over Seven

** credit to victory for original m4u upload which has been converted to mp§

Quote
Normally known for his charming keyboard contributions to the Halifax quartet In-Flight Safety (IFS), Daniel Ledwell is making a name for himself going solo. In his first departure from IFS, Ledwell unites simplistic country-folk melodies and hushed vocals to produce the seven heartbreaking, indie-infused tracks on Two Over Seven. Released on the same label as IFS, Ledwell sticks to Dead Daisy Record’s DIY motto by playing and recording the entire mini-orchestra of instruments on his condensed album. Besides obvious guitar contributions, Ledwell supplements his freshman project with cello, keyboards, trumpet, lap steel, banjo and glockenspiel. The blended sound carries his melodies forward, keeping alt-country influences identifiable while remaining inventive with his craft. This delicately fashioned album provides a melancholy yet hopeful soundtrack for the peaks and valleys of the heart.

Gillian Welch - Hell Among the Yearlings
Genre: "American Primitive" in her words.
1998

Quote from: AMG
Lacking some of the focus that made her debut album so stunning, Hell Among the Yearlings is nevertheless a thoroughly satisfying second album from Gillian Welch. Instead of backing away from the rustic folkiness of Revival, Welch deepens her bleak, clear-eyed world view, which makes her spare, old-timey arrangements all the more powerful. On occasion, the performances and songs are a bit too studied to be truly effective, but those moments are fleeting -- Hell Among the Yearlings offers ample proof that Welch is a talented, individual songwriter and that her debut was no fluke.

I notice that everything Bedhead has done has been uploaded except the Macha Loved Bedhead EP which I consider to be hands-down the best thing they were ever a part of.  Someone should fix this (my copy accidentally got sold to Amoeba in San Francisco if anyone wants to go get it).

After some thought on the matter, that EP was hands down the weakest thing they had done. Too much Macha, not enough Bedhead, and the cover of "believe" using a telelphone was gimmicky at best.

I did enjoy 'Only the Bodies', but I should admit that I'm more than a little sore that what I got was about 80% Macha and 20% Bedhead, when what I wanted was another Bedhead EP. None of the build ups and no lyrics that are cleverer than I am left me really disappointed after a while, I was initially excited because it sounded different.

Apparently, Jetset Records went the way of the dodo and that EP is no longer in production anymore. I'm uploading it...
...now.

Interesting.  You do know that all the songs were Bedhead-written sketches that were sent to Macha and "finished", right?  So if the "Macha sound" is overpowering the "Bedhead sound", it's strictly because they were the ones fleshing out the ideas the Kadane brothers had.  Matter of taste I suppose, by I think that this EP is seriously one of the top 20 EPs ever made, and probably even one of the top 20 pieces of music every made period.

Muchos gracias for the upload.

Exactly this! You can hear the songs underneath all the extra instruments and layers of tingly noises, but whether or not they're good songs when compared to the rest of the Bedhead discography is hard to tell because of those really weird decisions. I feel that they stripped down Bedhead to their skeleton, then threw somebody else's flesh and skin over the top.

one of the most underrated bands

I'd never heard of these guys before and am now listening to Music for Egon Schiele.  So far it sounds like a bunch of classical tone poems in a pop idiom.  I love it.  Incidentally, if you're not familiar with Schiele's short but intensely prolific career, it's definitely worth a brief looksy.

Quote from: Britannica
born , June 12, 1890, Tulln, near Vienna
died Oct. 31, 1918, Vienna

Austrian Expressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker noted for the eroticism of his figurative works.

As a student at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts (1907–09), Schiele was strongly influenced by the Jugendstil movement, the German Art Nouveau. He met Gustav Klimt, leader of the Vienna Sezession group, and the linearity and subtlety of Schiele's work owe much to Klimt's decorative elegance. Schiele, however, emphasized expression over decoration, heightening the emotive power of line with a feverish tension. He concentrated from the beginning on the human figure, and his candid, agitated treatment of erotic themes caused a sensation.

In 1909 he helped found the Neukunstgruppe (New Art Group) in Vienna. From 1911 onward he exhibited throughout Europe, and a special room was devoted to his work at a 1918 Sezessionist exhibit in Vienna, shortly before his death from Spanish influenza. Important works include “The Self Seer” (1911), “The Cardinal and Nun” (1912), and “Embrace” (1917). His landscapes exhibit the same febrile quality of colour and line.

I agree completely.  The thing that made Bedhead so great was how they didn't need any flesh or skin.  They were masters of getting their point across using the absolute minimum of sound.  That being said, Hey Goodbye is a really lovely song.

Also, moar Bedhead!

Just the two of them, playing a mix of Bedhead & New Year songs.  The sound quality isn't terribly great, but it's the only live recording I've ever found of Bedhead songs.

Camille - Le Fil

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?5zn0pioxexp
Quote
Having created quite an impact in her native France, the Nouvelle Vague singer uses a concept on her second solo outing -- Le Fil, or the thread, a drone that runs throughout the disc (and, just to emphasize, runs for about 30 minutes at the end if you don't turn the CD off). She won a couple of French Grammys with this disc, and it's easy to see why. It's quite adventurous, a journey for voice that moves outside the box. And yet, not as far as many people think. All too often the melodic underpinnings of her songs are quite predictable, and within a standard frame. When she does move outside that (as on the recurring "Janine" pieces or "Senza"), there's a real sense of daring, rather than playing, about this disc. Camille has been compared to Björk, but that's not right; she doesn't inhabit the same childlike alternative universe. Relatively speaking, Camille has her feet planted firmly on the ground. And, if you look at the two of them together, the French singer's sense of wonder seems a product of calculation rather than natural naïveté. That's not to say this is a bad, or even mediocre, album. It's not. It's good, at times even better than that. But at this stage she's definitely not the finished product, by any means. Where she goes next will perhaps say a lot more about her music that this record does.

Allmusic Guide: 4/5 stars
Does the world have room for yet another shambolic, sticky-sweet Swedish indie pop collective? Better make room in your heart, because following in the grand tradition of the Concretes, I'm from Barcelona, and the incestuous hordes at Labrador Records, here come the preposterously named Billie the Vision & the Dancers (naturally, nobody in the group is actually called Billie). With their preposterously titled third full-length (following The World According to Pablo and their debut, I Was So Unpopular in School and Now They're Giving Me This Beautiful Bicycle). Yes, the cutesy index is predictably high -- it's not irretrievably cloying (it doesn't quite reach I'm from Barcelona levels, for instance), but it's certainly pervasive enough to dissuade most anyone with a weak stomach for twee (you know who you are). Unless they're particularly good at ignoring lyrics: much of the cutesiness comes through in lead singer/songwriter Lars Lindquist's story-songs, most of which revolve around real or imagined encounters with fellow musicians -- the Pipettes, Erlend Øye, the Ark's Ola Salo, Jeff Buckley -- or possibly invented characters named Pablo and Lilly. There are also some relatively straightforward songs of love and self-doubt, and a reference-strewn ode to television DVD box sets ("Overdosing with You"). Musically, despite a preponderance of trumpet leads, Billie the Vision is actually less overbearingly twee than you might expect. There's an inviting warmth and rootsiness to the arrangements that recall the mellower moments of the first Aberfeldy album (only without so many glockenspiels). Even on the uptempo numbers (only about half of the album), the accumulation of accordions, fiddles, and rich vocal harmonies on top of the impressively assured guitar work feels loose and comfortably open-ended, rather than frenzied or forced. And, crucially, the album is rife with simple but effective top-notch pop melodies, even if they tend to bleed into one another somewhat. The result is a record of such pure, folksy sweetness that it's almost a shame the lyrical content is likely to turn many listeners away right off the bat. On the other hand, why should it be so objectionable to sing songs about love, friendship, and watching Desperate Housewives?

Yes it is twee pop, but yes it is good. and actually you can get it for free at their site as well as their first debut album which i didn't upload.
They're fun albums to listen to every so often so try them out if you'd like.

uploading some other stuff later too.

Here's the second part of my American Analog Set post.

The American Analog Set - Know By Heart

Quote
On Know by Heart American Analog Set plugs along in their characteristic lo-fi manner, with hypnotic guitars, mellow basslines, and careful lyrics by Andrew Kenny. Its rolling melodic lines and subtle textures continue in the vein of their previous albums and in the direction taken by its predecessor, Golden Band. Know by Heart culminates with "Aaron and Maria," a foray into crystalline, driving-tongue-in-cheek platitudes. And songs like "Punk as Fuck," "The Postman," and "Know by Heart," where Mark Smith's skittering drumwork provides the spine for a kinetically downbeat sonic experience, epitomize American Analog Set's penchant for straightforward minimalist elegance.

Promise of Love

Quote
The American Analog Set are never going to change. Like death, taxes, and Bob Hope, they are going to remain true: keyboard drones, motorik rhythms, breathy, blurred vocals, minimalistic guitar lines. Or so one would think from even a cursory examination of their career to date. With regard to their fifth full-length album, Promise of Love, it would be right to conclude they will always stay the same. And a little wrong, too. All the elements mentioned above are present. The album's opening track, "Continuous Hit Music," rides the same monotone beat and oscillating organ for a good three minutes before anything happens -- and when it does happen, it is a minute and a half of breathy vocals the likes of which are instantly familiar to anyone who has heard an American Analog Set record. Also routine is the practice of every song having a long instrumental passage where nothing much happens. So is the lack of interesting melodies. And yet, this impression would also be a little wrong, as there are some signs of change on Promise of Love. "Hard to Find" mixes an almost hip-hop beat into their drone-y sound; "The Hatist" has an almost funky beat, interesting clicky rhythm guitars, and nice male/female vocals (it is the best song on the record); the title track is a two-minute song with distorted quickly strummed guitars and an actual hard-charging tempo; and "Modern Drummer" has some sweetly sawing cellos. However, the changes are so minute and the record so unassuming and melody free that it is really hard to care about the band anymore. Their press release says to "let the American Analog Set be the soundtrack to your life." If that is the case, you need to get out more. Or at least listen to a band that isn't content to keep churning out the same basic album every two years.

Set Free

Quote
Over the years, by giving their output incongruous or humorous handles, American Analog Set could apply a little friction to their mellow, quietly gleaming songs. Like calling the brightly sighing opener to 2001's Know by Heart "Punk as Fuck," or labeling an early single "High Fidelity vs. Guy Fidelity." The practice continued through 2003's Promise of Love, which stole the blabbing radio phrase "Continuous Hit Music" for a song, and it's alive and well in 2005 on Set Free, AmAnSet's Arts & Crafts debut. Andrew Kenny uses a sports cliché to delineate a damaged heart on "Play Hurt," and the song's low-end groove is meatier than the band's been in a while. American Analog Set have been accused of writing the same song over and over -- and over -- again, and Set Free isn't immune to that. The instrumental "(Theme From) Everything Ends" could be from anywhere in their career. It's certainly polite, but by this point it's probably also the sort of thing they write on autopilot. Fortunately, on most of Set Free American Analog Set seem refreshed inside their established formula. Opener "Born on the Cusp" builds insistently on lingering vibraphone and acoustic guitar, while "Immaculate Heart 2" twinkles on the warm fringes of post-rock. Kenny sings louder than a whisper on "She's Half," his voice layering over itself like a more intellectual, less eccentric Wayne Coyne as he recounts an old romance in flickering remembrance, and "Green Green Grass" could sell Saturns with its squirrelly backwards guitars and tick-along beat. In a final note of song title incongruity, Set Free culminates in "Fuck This...I'm Leaving." Naturally, it begins as one of the record's most fragile things, Kenny's vocal hesitating like a menagerie on the edge of a high shelf. But it gets rewardingly louder later, and offers a suitably pretty end to an album that effectively reshuffles what seemingly could not be reshuffled.

I believe I've got a full length somewhere on my hard drive, I'll investigate when I get home

Whoa, is this all 4 CD's?

EDIT: apparently not, which I'm glad about considering 75mb for 4 albums would be a miserable bit-rate.

Kinda lame blurb about Psychedelic Horseshit

Quote

Let's spin the history dial back and wonder what if Hitler had inherited six million dollars instead of being responsible for the deaths of six million Jews? Think about it-- no Anne Frank, Joseph Mengele, or Auschwitz; marzipan sales would be way up, cocaine legal, and vegetarians would have had an early advocate and mentor; the German Sheperd would be the national bird; watercoloring might even be a serious medium-- the mind boggles. And as an ardent fan of classical music (not to mention the six mil burnin' a hole in his pocket, Mein Gott!) you can bet Adolph would have been on board with Psychedelic Horseshit. The sounds on Magic Flowers Droned captures the rickety skeletal pop of Step Forward-era Fall, the lo-fi fuzz of Swell Maps, and static noblesse of Slay Tracks-era Pavement. Is that classical enough for ya? For sure, this full-length debut is no Parsifal, but to these guys, sometimes a spear is just a spear and The Holy Grail is a movie made by Monty Python. As for Wagner, four outta five housepainters will tell you theirs is a name you can trust. Now where'd I put that joint?

Considered by the Columbus cognoscenti as the "little brother band" (Stooges-style) to Times New Viking (MC5-style), Psychedelic Horseshit first came about as three buds determined to crash a hippie fest and jam retardo. When asked for their name, singer/guitarist Matt Whitehurst replied, "Just call us Psychedelic Horseshit." The band killed, the name stuck, and thus the die was ignominiously cast. Since then, they played with the Urinals, Country Teasers, Dan Melchior, Blues Control, toured with Pink Reason and Times New Viking, ruled a couple showcases at the 2007 SXSW, basically doing what they can to lay the foundation for the release of this debut LP (a previous 7-inch on the Columbus Discount label made many 2006 Best Of lists, too).

Distempered, jaded, harmonious, and ramshackle, Psychedelic Horseshit keeps the glass half full; the question is, do you have the courage to drink their wry and wizened brew? Sure you do, it's the tonic of champions!

Joan As Police Woman - To Survive

** not the official cover to my knowledge

Quote
Joan As Police Woman is to release her second album nearly two years to the date after her debut Real Life arrived. On June the 9th, To Survive will be available through Reveal Records as a CD, download and a LP version which also comes with a bonus CD. It contains ten new songs, including forthcoming single To Be Loved (out June 2nd) and the closing track To America - featuring Rufus Wainwright. Songwriter and singer Joan Wasser says of To Survive, "I am always trying to dig deeper into the emotional experience. I want to access the most honest place I can, distill it and present it in a way that makes sense musically."

Alright, here is something i am sure you guys will enjoy!

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid The Omniscient

Quote
is the ninth studio album by the Canadian metal musician Devin Townsend, released on his own label Hevydevy and InsideOut Music on June 5, 2007.

The album is a fictional concept album based on the character named Ziltoid, from the planet Ziltoidia 9. Ziltoid travels to Earth in search for "the ultimate cup of coffee", in order for him to succeed time travel.

The album is a pure solo album, all music is written, mixed, produced and performed by Townsend. All drum tracks were recorded using a software synthesizer entitled 'Drumkit from Hell'.

Townsend describes it as being a mix between Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, with a storyline like that of Punky Brüster's Cooked on Phonics.

"You shall fetch me, your universes ultimate cup of coffee...black...you have 5 earth minutes, make it perfect!"

'They hide their finest bean!'

"You have not impressed mighty Ziltoid! I am so omniscient, that if there were to be two omnisciences, I would be both! Prepare for the subjugation!"
probably the sweetest thing ever. super heavy, melodic, funny

Rocket Science - Welcome Aboard the 3C10

Quote from: AMG
Hot on the heels of the Vines, Rocket Science emerged from Melbourne in mid-1998. The indie rock four-piece, which consists of Roman Tucker (vocals), Kit Warhurst (drums), Dave Gray (bass), and Paul Maybury (guitar), had dreams of making it big in music since childhood. They compose a gritty, glam rock sound that's a little more edgy than the Vines' candied punk. Their first song, "Welcome Aboard," was written on the same day Rocket Science came together. From there, they built an Australian following, which later collected U.K. fans. Opening dates with Mudhoney and the Supersuckers following into 2000 and their debut full-length, Welcome Aboard the 3C10, appeared the next year. Rocket Science's sleazy, arrogant style was a buzz well into 2002 when they recorded the sophomore effort, Contact High. It wouldn't see a release date in Europe until mid-2003; however, fans tied themselves over with the electric Run Like a Gun EP which appeared earlier that spring.

Shearwater - Everybody Makes Mistakes

Quote from: AMG
A song cycle of disappointment and defeat, the second release from Shearwater expands upon the skeletal framework of their debut by adding textural color in the form of vibraphone, pump organ, viola, violin, and drums to the mix of their particularly dejected Americana. The lineup now having officially expanded to include Kim Burke on upright bass and drummer/vibraphonist Thor Harris, the duo of Jonathan Meiburg and Will Robinson Sheff continues to split the songwriting chores equally, with Meiburg's wraith-like falsetto hanging over his gloriously mournful piano progressions and Sheff displaying an impressive eye for detail while contributing the album's most upbeat Americana narratives. Every bit as dejected and lost as their first release, the advanced sense of melody and impressively varied aural textures mark a clear progression in the quality of their songcraft, as the subtly added instrumental touches flesh out the songs perfectly. With Meiburg's voice coming across like an amalgamation of Thom Yorke and Art Garfunkel, his songs dazzle with their profoundly mysterious melodies and understated elegance and are impressively balanced by Sheff's more homespun moroseness and earthy arrangements. Ultimately, as both Meiburg and Sheff are also members of the more hyped Okkervile River, it's somewhat surprising that Everybody Makes Mistakes trumps anything produced by that outfit. Still, their ability to create an album so varied in sound yet so consistent in mood is a true testament to their strength as collaborators and clearly marks their arrival as one of the standout songwriting duos in their genre.
